[DMANET] PhD fellowship in Algorithms at University of Copenhagen

The Department of Computer Science at the University of Copenhagen (DIKU) invites applications for PhD or integrated MSc + PhD fellowship in Algorithms.

Start date 1 September 2026 (Or as soon as possible hereafter).

The deadline for applications is January 10, 2026, 23:59 GMT +1.

The project and the scientific environment
The PhD project is broadly within algorithms. The expectation is curiosity driven research in a highly collaborative environment. Using the power of mathematics, we strive to create fundamental breakthroughs in algorithmic thinking. We are currently ranked 1st in the EU in algorithms and complexity theory by CSrankings.org with a strong presence at top-tier conferences like STOC, FOCS, SODA, CCC and SoCG. We are home to the Basic Algorithms Research Copenhagen (BARC) centre (https://barc.ku.dk/), joint with the IT University of Copenhagen, and have extensive collaborations with the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and with Lund University on the Swedish side of the Øresund Bridge, as well as with our many visitors. We aim to attract top talent from around the world to an ambitious, creative, collaborative, and fun environment. While our focus in on theoretical research, we do have a track record of surprising algorithmic discoveries leading to major industrial applications.
The University of Copenhagen was founded in 1479 and is the oldest and largest university in Denmark. It is often ranked as the best university in Scandinavia and consistently as one of the top places in Europe. Within computer science, it is ranked 1st in the European Union by ShanghaiRanking.
Principal supervisor is expected to be Associate Professor Mikkel Abrahamsen (miab@di.ku.dkhttps://sites.google.com/view/mikkel-abrahamsen) or Professor Mikkel Thorup (mthorup@di.ku.dkhttps://hjemmesider.diku.dk/~mthorup/). Candidates interested in working with other faculty from DIKU at the BARC center (https://barc.ku.dk/researchers/) are also encouraged to apply.

Who are we looking for?
To be eligible to apply for these positions, applicants need to have or be about to obtain either a BSc or an MSc degree (equivalent to a Danish BSc or MSc degree) in computer science, mathematics, or a related field. The successful candidates are expected to have a strong background and passionate interest in mathematics and theoretical computer science, as demonstrated by excellent grades in relevant courses, or by results at the Olympiads of Mathematics or Informatics, or by publications in relevant internationally recognized conferences or journals. Problem solving skills and creativity are a must.
Applicants need to be highly motivated for doctoral studies; should possess the ability to work independently and perform critical analysis and also have good levels of communicative abilities and English language skills.
The working language of the group is English, and knowledge of English is also fully sufficient to navigate life in Denmark in general. It might also be worth mentioning that Denmark routinely scores at the absolute top in rankings of quality of life such as, e.g., the OECD Better Life Index http://www.oecdbetterlifeindex.org/.

When? March 16 - 20, 2026
Where? University of Stuttgart

About GAMM:
GAMM defines itself as an interdisciplinary network for researchers from
applied mathematics and mechanics as well as their sub- and neighboring
fields.

The GAMM annual convention, at which up to 1,200 participants meet up
for a joint exchange of ideas, is complemented by direct
interdisciplinary cooperation, which primarily takes place in expert
committees. The promotion of early career researchers is at the heart of
GAMM.

**Optimization Section**:
Optimization is the next natural step after simulation with increasing
importance in the future. The aim of this session is to provide the
basis of a holistic overview of all areas of optimization. Thus
abstracts from both a theoretical as well as an applied perspective are
welcome.
We invite you to participate and to submit an abstract and optionally a
post-conference short paper for the GAMM Proceedings (PAMM).
Also, we are happy to announce that our topical speakers will be
**Andrea Walther** (HUB) and **Sebastian Pokutta** (ZIB)!

**Abstract submission**:
Short communications (20-minute talks including discussion) can be
submitted in the form of abstracts (max. 400 words, plain English text)
to our section. GAMM's policy allows each participant to give at most
one talk. The collected abstracts will be published online.

Proceedings:
Papers presented in sections may be published electronically in PAMM
("Proceedings in Applied Mathematics and Mechanics"). The papers need to
be at least six pages long and will undergo peer-review. The deadline

As our material progresses, this is just a reminder every now and then.
To access information regarding IFORS Developing Countries resources, its regular updates – and to submit your possible "free" (not copyright protected) material, you may occasionally visit the link:

http://ifors.org/developing_countries/index.php?title=Main_Page .

With this open online resources page we aim to provide a platform to make research and applications of OR widely accessible to the entire OR community including researchers, academicians and scholars in the Developing Countries (DCs).

For this purpose we invite scholarly contributions spanning across all areas and sectors ranging from arts and science, to communication and education.

The International Federation of Operational Research Societies (https://www.ifors.org) is a 65-year-old organization which is currently composed of 54 national societies. Regional Groups of are: ALIO (The Latin American Ibero Association on Operations Research), APORS (The Association of Asian-Pacific Operational Research Societies), EURO (The Association of European Operational Research Societies), NORAM (The Association of North American Operations Research Societies). conferences are held every three years. The conference 2023 was held very successfully in Santiago, Chile; the next exciting IFORS conference will be celebrated in 2026 in Vienna. Please visit the following link for details regarding the same: https://www.ifors2026.at/home/.

Thank you very much for your attention. We look forward to your enthusiastic participation and scholarly contributions.
