[DMANET] Postdoc position: optimising aircraft power flow, Computer Science, University of Nottingham

An outstanding candidate is required to support Nottingham's
contribution to project ENIGMA, funded by the European Commission, to
deliver a Supervisory Controller for Enhanced Electrical Energy
Management on board aircraft.  The successful candidate would work in
the School of Computer Science on the optimisation of power flows within
more electric aircraft. Applicants must have a good knowledge of
optimisation techniques and strong programming skills. Colleagues in
Electrical Engineering will handle the engineering details.

Traditional aircraft systems are increasingly being replaced by
electrical equivalents, with the aim of reducing weight and fuel
consumption, and intelligent control of these systems is vital for
maximising the benefits.  This position offers an opportunity to work at
the forefront of this interesting and exciting research area. The
successful candidate will be working in the Automated Scheduling
Planning and Optimisation (ASAP) Research Group at the School of
Computer Science and collaborating closely with colleagues working on
Aircraft Electric Power Systems within the Faculty of Engineering,
through the Institute for Aerospace Technology at the University.
Working with partners in Electrical Engineering as well as with three
external partners, the successful candidate will contribute towards the
design, modelling and (software) development of the controller.

Applications are invited from highly skilled researchers in Computer
Science, Mathematics, Optimisation, Operational Research, or closely
related disciplines. The successful candidate will have a good
understanding of mathematical models for real-world problems, of
decision making/optimisation algorithms/approaches and of software
development.

The applicants must have (or be very close to completing) a PhD in
Computer Science, Mathematics, Optimisation, Operational Research, or
closely related discipline. The successful candidate will need to work
with and develop mathematical models as well as work on the production
of controller code (formulated as state models and otherwise) to enact
decisions made (in as automated a way as possible). Experience with
Mixed Integer Linear Programming, MILP solvers and using/developing
custom heuristic or exact optimisation algorithms will be of value. Due
to the partnerships involved, a good understanding of Electrical power
systems is not required but could be beneficial for improving the
initial understanding of the problem being solved.

The successful candidate should be able to work both independently and
collaboratively and be able to meet tight deadlines. Good communication
skills to work within multidisciplinary teams are crucial. The candidate
will be expected to disseminate research results in peer-reviewed
journals and conferences.

The position will be offered on a Fixed-term contract for 15 months.
Hours of work will be Full-time (36.25 per week). Job share arrangements

MAPSP is a biennial workshop dedicated to all theoretical and practical
aspects of scheduling, planning, and timetabling.

The 14th Workshop on Models and Algorithms for Planning and Scheduling Problems (MAPSP 2019) will be organized in Hotel "De Zeeuwse Stromen" in Renesse.
It will take place in the week of 2-7 June 2019. Renesse is a village on the isle of Schouwen-Duiveland in the province Zeeland of the Netherlands. The hotel is a short walk from the beach.

Context :
Research teams of EMSE Saint-Etienne (Ecole des Mines de Saint-Etienne) and of the University of Clermont-Ferrand received funding from the ANR for a research program relative to scheduling and routing integrated problems. Routing and scheduling problems are very common especially in healthcare system management and services at home which will provide our test bed cases:
- Medical staff management;
- Resource management including scheduling of operating rooms and ambulances for example;
- Management of transport for patient or customer from their current position to hospital, or for nurse-to-patient transport;
The problems to solve are of considerable interest for a practical point of view and require efficient methods to address large scale instances. Real life data could be provided by a service at home partner.
The challenging problem come from both the different objectives of patients/health-care staff and the coordination/synchronization between the schedules of different resources. In addition, some freelance workers have to be managed in a fair and profitable way.

Scientific objectives:
Mono-period problems with deterministic demands and resource availabilities will focus the first research step:
1. The first work will be the design of metaheuristic dedicated to planning and coordination of routing staff and patient care schedules;
2. The second step could be to ensure economic equity as regards of external staff;
3. The next step could be directed to multi-period problems where the long term quality of services could be optimized for staff, patients and the service provider company.

Required skills:

Online Social Networks (OSNs) are a multidisciplinary research
playground. On the one hand, they represent a challenging environment
for researchers working in academia and industry to develop the next
generation of networking platforms and their services. At the same time,
the digital footprints that people leave behind through OSNs provide a
unique source to investigate and understand (by exploiting BigData
analytics) people's behavior, human relationships, and societal
phenomena such as epidemics spreading, terrorist networks, the diffusion
of opinions, the pulse of a city, the evolution of migrations, etc.

IEEE CAOS focuses on (i) understanding the behavior of OSN systems, and
OSN users; (ii) designing OSN mechanisms, services and applications for
the benefit of users, (iii) controlling the use, and possibly, misuse of
OSN services; (iv) predicting the way information spreads in OSN and
users acquire or lose importance and influence in their local and global
communities.

CAOS aims to provide a reference forum targeted not only to the
community of researcher working on networking technologies for OSN, but
it aims at engaging a multidisciplinary community of researchers working
at the intersection between computer networking, complex networks, Big
Data analytics, focusing on network technologies and abstractions for
OSN. Therefore, the workshop also welcomes submissions applying a wide
range of (computer- and network-science) techniques and tools to OSN for
investigating the properties and roles of the network of (online) social
relationships in the various sectors of the society (e.g., politics,
economics, finance, health, entertainment).

## PAPER FORMAT AND SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS

Papers must be submitted electronically as PDF files, formatted for
8.5x11-inch paper. The length of the paper must be no more than 6 pages
(+2 extra pages with over-length charge of $100/page) in the IEEE
double-column format (10-pt font).

[DMANET] Two postdoc positions in Bonn, Germany

Within the Hausdorff Center for Mathematics (HCM) at the University of Bonn, Professor Anne Driemel is looking to fill two postdoctoral research positions (TV-L 13) for up to three years, starting in fall 2019 or sooner.

The research focus lies on discrete and computational geometry and its connections to the theory of machine learning, focussing in particular on algorithmic problems in metric spaces of curves. The group of Professor Anne Driemel is jointly affiliated with the HCM and with the Institute of Computer Science at the University of Bonn. The group maintains close collaboration with other computer science theory groups at the university, which together form a stimulating and supportive research environment.

The University of Bonn is one of the prominent research universities in Germany and has an excellent international reputation. As of January 2019, the University of Bonn will have six Clusters of Excellence, more than any other German university. One of these Clusters is the Hausdorff Center for Mathematics, a worldwide leading institute for cutting-edge mathematical research. Bonn is an international city and home of the UN in Germany. The successful candidate has completed a PhD thesis in the area of theoretical computer science or a related area in mathematics and has demonstrated independence in conducting research and presenting scientific ideas, supported by publications in international top-tier peer-reviewed conferences and journals.

Postdoctoral Position in Graph Theory and Combinatorics at KIT

Young researchers with strong background in discrete mathematics are invited to apply for this postdoctoral position. A Ph.D. in mathematics or theoretical computer science is required. Knowledge and experience in graph theory and combinatorics are expected. An excellent knowledge of English is required, knowledge of German is preferred.


Specific research topics include generalized Ramsey-type problems, graph coloring problems, extremal problems in set systems and posets, extremal problems in graphs. The responsibilities of the position include teaching four academic hours per week.

The position is available now starting no later than Oct. 1, 2019. The salary grade is E13. This is a 2-year position with a possible extension for up to 5 years.

and applications for distributed sensing (D-SENSE).

CALL FOR PAPERS AND SESSIONS:

Researchers, academics, practitioners, and students interested in any branch of Operational Research, mathematical modelling or economic analysis are invited to submit abstracts or organize sessions.

Invited and contributed papers will be organized in parallel sessions. Sessions will be a part of Streams, and streams are grouped into different Areas. The list of Areas can be found at [ https://www.euro2019dublin.com/abstract-submission | https://www.euro2019dublin.com/abstract-submission ] , where also access is provided to the list of streams.

Researchers who wish to organize a stream or an invited session or contribute with a paper within an invited session should contact a PC member of the corresponding area.

SESSIONS ON GOVERNANCE ANALYTICS AND RENEWABLE ENERGY:

Special Sessions on Governance Analytics and Renewable Power will propose a new role for the conference, in the design of operationally feasible solutions for major projects, in this case to capture wind energy (mainly from the Atlantic) and heat energy (mainly from the south of Europe) and grid it across Europe. One of these exciting sessions will be a Forum .

Admission to the Welcome Reception on 23rd June 2019 at University College Dublin;
Transfer ticket.

The registration fee for an accompanying person covers the same except the admission to sessions and conference materials.
