[DMANET] Postdoc Positions at MPI Saarbrücken (Algorithms & Complexity)

Postdoc positions are available at the Algorithms & Complexity group of
the Max Planck Institute for Informatics in Saarbrücken, supported by
the European Research Council (ERC) Consolidator Grant "SYSTEMATICGRAPH:
Systematic mapping of the complexity landscape of hard algorithmic graph
problems" held by Dániel Marx.

The Max Planck Institute for Informatics is located on the campus of
Saarland University in Saarbrücken, Germany. Our working language is
English. The group collaborates with several major research institutions
in Europe and the U.S. and has high international visibility. There is
generous travel support available for all group members.

The goal of the project is to put the search for tractable algorithmic
graph problems into a systematic and methodological framework: instead
of focusing on specific sporadic problems, we intend to obtain a unified
algorithmic understanding by mapping the entire complexity landscape of
a particular problem domain. A dichotomy theorem is a complete
classification result that characterizes the complexity of each member
of a family of problems: it identifies all the cases that admit
efficient algorithms and proves that all the other cases are
computationally hard. Achieving such a complete understanding for a
family of problems requires the joint effort of algorithm design (to
identify all the tractable cases) and computational complexity (to give
lower bounds for the hard cases.

The candidates should have (or expect to have shortly) a PhD degree in
Computer Science or related area; research experience at postdoctoral
level is of advantage. A successful candidate should have excellent
knowledge of algorithms and/or complexity. Strong background
parameterized complexity, fixed-parameter tractability, graph theory,
combinatorics, or approximation is of advantage.

[DMANET] Winter School Netopt2020 (last announcement)

The 9th edition of the Winter School on Network Optimization will take place at Hotel Estoril-Éden, Monte Estoril,

from the 20th to the 24th of January 2020.

Its main objective is to provide an opportunity for PhD students to get together and attend high level courses in the field of Network Optimization. Non-PhD students are welcome to attend the school, but the number of participants is limited and priority will be given to PhD students. In this edition of the school, the lecturers and subjects to be addressed are:

[DMANET] Postdoctoral Fellowship: University of British Columbia Okanagan, Optimization and Road Design.

The Center for Optimization, Convex Analysis, and Nonsmooth Analysis (COCANA, http://ocana.ok.ubc.ca/) is currently inviting applications for a postdoctoral fellow focused in Optimization and Road Design. COCANA is situated at the University of British Columbia, Okanagan Campus, in the beautiful city of Kelowna, Canada.

Road construction represents a significant portion of supporting an efficient road network. Reducing road construction costs while maintaining safety standards is a challenging and exciting area of modern research. This position is part of an ongoing project that won the 2019 EURO Operations Research Practice Prize.

The successful candidate will have completed, or be nearing completion, of a Ph.D. in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related discipline. In addition, they must have strong software engineering and programming skills.

The problems in Road Design are wide and varied. As such the successful candidate will have skills and experience covering at least 2 of the following areas (listed alphabetically): Applied Optimization, Derivative-Free Optimization, Linear Programming, Mathematical Modeling (including Prototype modeling software), Network flow optimization, Surrogate Mathematical Modeling, Sensitivity Analysis, and/or Uncertainty Quantification. In addition, as this is a time sensitive client project, the following soft skills are desirable experience that should be highlighted with the application letter: communication skills with industrial collaborators, project management skill, supervision and mentoring of undergraduate and master's students.

QONFEST is the umbrella conference comprising the joint international 2020

CALL FOR AFFILIATED WORKSHOPS

ICALP 2020 (http://econcs.pku.edu.cn/icalp2020/) and LICS 2020 (

till 12th of July 2020 in Beijing, China. The conferences will be preceded
by two days of joint workshops, held on July 6th and 7th. We invite
proposals of workshops affiliated with ICALP-LICS 2020 on all topics
covered by ICALP and LICS, as well as other areas of theoretical computer
science.

Proposals should be submitted no later than

by sending an email to frederic.blanqui@inria.fr. Due to limited space of
the venue we might not be able to accommodate all the proposed workshops.
You should expect notification on the acceptance of your proposal by mid
December 2019.

A workshop proposal submission should consist of:

- short description of the area covered by the workshop and the motivation
behind it;

- expected number of participants (if available, please include the data

As for the format, a standard option is a one-day workshop consisting of

like open problem sessions, discussion panels, or working sessions.

If you plan to have invited speakers, please specify their expected number
and, if possible, tentative names. If you plan a call for papers or for
contributed talks followed by a selection procedure, the submission date
should be scheduled after ICALP 2020 and LICS 2020 notification, while the
notification should take place considerably before the early registration
deadline. In your submission please include details, in particular the time
schedule, of the planned procedure of selecting papers and/or contributed
talks. If you plan to have published proceedings of your workshop, please
provide the name of the publisher. Please be advised that ICALP-LICS 2020
is not able to provide any financial support for publishing workshop
proceedings.

We expect the workshops to be financially independent. The expenses related
to the participation of invited speakers, production of workshop materials,
etc. should be covered from independent sources. On top of standard
ICALP/LICS registration fee there will be a moderate registration fee for

[DMANET] Vacancy announcement: Researcher (m/f/d) in Information Systems and Operations Research

Dear DMANet participants,
Jade University of Applied Sciences is currently offering a research position (full time, wage group E13 TVL) in the field of Information Systems / Operations Research until June 30th, 2022. The researcher (male / female or diverse) shall participate in the project "MeteoValue-live" funded by the German Federal Ministry of Transportation and Digital Infrastructure. Goal of the project is to develop a software that supports routing and scheduling of long distance buses and trucks, taking predicted severe weather conditions and the availability of parking spaces into account. The project is coordinated by Jade University of Applied Sciences, and conducted in cooperation with project partners FlixMobility, DB Schenker, Map and Route, infoware, Climate Media Factory, and Fraunhofer FOKUS.
The researcher will participate in the conceptual design and implementation of a decision support component for dispatchers. The researcher will also support the project management, and coordination.
Requirements:

- A completed Master's Degree in Information Systems or a related field (means: with programming skills, ideally in the area of microservices).

- Communication skills, and the ability to work in a team

- Knowledge of Operation Research
The position also requires a basic knowledge in German.

Postdoctoral Position in Quantum Computer Science at Los Alamos National Laboratory

What You Will Do

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking postdoctoral researchers to work both independently and in a team environment on theoretical and applied computer science approaches to quantum computing, quantum algorithms, quantum simulation, quantum annealing, quantum optimization, and quantum machine learning. One particular goal is to conduct the foundational research needed to convert noisy, intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) computers into a reliable resource that benefits LANL's scientific and national-security missions.

The successful candidate will be expected to

1. Conduct research to develop methods for exploiting near-term quantum computing technologies
2. Develop theoretical and computational algorithms, methods, and tools for quantum computers
3. Communicate research results through reports, presentations, and peer-reviewed publications

Previous experience with quantum computing, such as quantum algorithms, quantum compilers, quantum machine learning, quantum annealers, or quantum simulators, is a plus but not a requirement. Mathematical aptitude and enthusiasm to learn about quantum computing are equally crucial.

LANL has a history of ground-breaking achievements in quantum computing. You will have the opportunity to work with internationally recognized experts in the field.

*Job description*
We are hiring a PhD student with interests in complex systems,
self-organisation, morphogenesis of graphs, complex networks and cellular
automata. The PhD candidate will integrate the team RI2C at LITIS lab in
Le Havre, France. In particular, we want to model the process of
creation and evolution of the shape and structure of the street networks
of the urban fabric. This subject is a continuation of a first thesis
on the morphogenesis of road networks directed by a set of forces
defined by a process of reaction-diffusion, based on an irregular
automaton. In this work a temporally coherent and
environment-constrained network generation model is proposed. We want to
study the
feedback and feedforward between the network and its environment and to
define metrics to characterize and compare existing and
generated networks. The model representing complex networks that we use
are spatial temporal graphs where nodes are arranged in a
Euclidean space of dimension 2 or 3. In these graphs the temporal
dimension is added in order to capture the dynamic aspects and the
impact on and from the environment.

We are looking for a new postdoc to appoint for two years at the Mathematics of Operations Research group at the University of Twente, The Netherrlands (https://www.utwente.nl/en/eemcs/mor/) in the project `WebInsight'; funded by the Netherlands Enterprise Agency and the European Commission. The project is a collaboration between several companies based in France and the University of Twente.
Together with our industrial partners, we aim to deliver high-value analysis of World-Wide-Web (WWW) content. The project focuses on the introduction of predictive elements in web crawling, scoring websites & pages through continuous processing of data for semantic characterization. As a postdoc, you will play an important part in the creation of scoring methods that will be usable in the prioritization of the crawling process. This research involves a combination of mathematical modeling, statistics, network science, and machine learning. We expect you to design novel scoring functions, and then prototype, evaluate and test them on the web data obtained from the industrial partners.
The MOR group is a part of the Digital Society Institute and the Data Science network at the University of Twente. You will benefit from our broad national and international network of academic contacts and research programs of the MOR group and the WebInsight consortium.

The Data to Intelligence Research Centre at the School of Information Technology, Deakin University has one open vacancy in the area of discrete optimisation for a fully funded doctoral student. The research topic focuses on developing advanced solution techniques to applied multi-component combinatorial optimisation problems.

The candidate should have a Master degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science, Operations Research, Artificial Intelligence, Applied Mathematics, or a related field. Strong academic performance, programming and mathematical skills as well as a good level of written and oral English are essential. Experience with metaheuristic optimisation methods, mathematical/constraint programming, and knowledge of hybrid and decomposition-based optimisation techniques is desirable.

[DMANET] CG Challenge: No Limited Class

Dear friends and colleagues,

As previously announced, the CG Challenge 2020 included the
option of running a „Limited Class" - see below as a reminder.

After evaluating the feedback we received and gauging the effort
required for setting up another, special server, we have come to the
conclusion that we will NOT add this new experiment to next year's
CG Challenge.

That will of course not stand in the way of all kinds of regular, „open"
submissions. We look forward to seeing the outcomes of your work!
