There are travel grants, thanks to the NSF and SIGACT, available to attend
SIAM Symposium on Algorithmic Principles of Computer Systems (APOCS 2020),
which is taking place on January 8, 2020 in Salt Lake City (and is
co-located with SODA).

The 3rd International Conference on Logic and Argumentation (CLAR 2020)
invites interdisciplinary contributions from logic, artificial
intelligence, philosophy, computer science, linguistics, law, and other
areas studying logic and formal argumentation.
CLAR 2020 will be held in Hangzhou, 6-9 April 2020, as part of the
International Conferences on Logic and Artificial Intelligence at Zhejiang
University (ZJULogAI 2020). With a special focus on "methods and tools for
explainable AI", a core objective of ZJULogAI is to present the latest
developments and progress made on the crucial question of how to make AI
more transparent, trustworthy and accountable, both in China as well as in
the rest of the world. All participants to CLAR 2020 have access to all
other events of ZJULogAI as well.
Online LNAI proceedings with accepted submissions will be available during
the conference, and extended versions will be published after the
conference in a special issue of the Journal of Logic and Computation.

We invite two types of submissions: full papers (between 12 and 20 pages)
describing original and unpublished work and extended abstracts (between 4
and 8 pages) of preliminary original work or extended abstracts of already
published work, from either the field of logic or the field of formal
argumentation. Additional support material may be included in an appendix,
which may be considered or ignored by the program committee.
Submissions must be prepared in LaTeX, using the Springer LNCS style:

*Research Assistant Professor in the Foundations of Data Science.* This is
a non-tenure track position, normally renewable annually to a maximum of
three years. This position has been established as part of
interdisciplinary activities under UIC's TRIPODS grant in the foundations

Dear Colleagues,
Metaheuristics and bioinspired algorithms are used in different fields of
science and technology. They are important optimization tools that commonly
are based on populations to explore the solutions to complex problems.
Different methods are also used for the classification of approximation
using different learning rules extracted from nature.
Entropy is a powerful tool that has changed the analysis of information.
The use of entropy has been extended in metaheuristics and bioinspired
algorithms from measuring uncertainty to helping to explore and exploit
search spaces in optimization. Different kinds of entropy are used
depending on what is required. Moreover, in the information era, it is
necessary to use metaheuristics and bioinspired methods to provide accurate
solutions to complex problems. Hybrid algorithms are also important; they
merge skills from different approaches and make decisions based on
different rules to accurately explore the possible solutions.
Since the fields of metaheuristics and bioinspired algorithms are
constantly growing, it is complicated to follow all the branches where they
are combined with entropy. Considering the above, this Special Issue aims
to present the latest advances in metaheuristics and bioinspired algorithms
that employ or solve problems where entropy is included. It also seeks to
include literature reviews and surveys on related topics.

Dear Colleagues,
Remote sensing is defined as the science of analyzing and monitoring
physical characteristics of an area with the measurement of its reflected
or emitted radiation. Typically, remote sensing information is obtained
from airplanes or satellites at a great distance from the surface of the
earth, enabling regular monitoring of land, ocean, and atmospheric
conditions for multiple applications, such as mineralogy, biology, defense,
and environmental preservation.
The data acquired for remote sensing can be represented in the form of
images to make its analysis easier. However, such images present
interesting characteristics such as a high spectral-spatial-temporal
resolution, and multiple channels that provide valuable information
independently or all together. These facts generate a big amount of
information that must be properly and accurately analyzed. Some of the
issues related to images from remote sensing applications can be treated as
optimization problems. Thus, the necessity to design and implement
optimization methods that possess a superior performance on the search for
optimal solutions for remote sensing applications arises.
This special issue concerns the implementation and development of
optimization techniques able to find the best solutions for processing
remote sensing images. In general, in this special issue the latest
advances and trends of optimization algorithms for remote sensing image
processing will be presented, addressing original developments, new
applications, and practical solutions to open questions. The aim is to
increase the data and knowledge exchange between the optimization and
remote sensing communities and allow experts from other areas to understand
the inherent problematics of remote sensing. Moreover, authors are
encouraged to present hybrid methods that might include the use of machine
learning approaches.

[DMANET] Postdoctoral Fellowship in Genome Rearrangements Problems
We are seeking a candidate for a 2-year post-doctoral fellowship position
at the Laboratory of Optimization and Combinatorics (LOCo
<https://www.loco.ic.unicamp.br/>), Institute of Computing (IC
<https://ic.unicamp.br/en>), University of Campinas (Unicamp
<https://www.unicamp.br/unicamp/english>), Brazil. This fellowship entitled
"Sorting by Genome Rearrangements Problems" is part of a Thematic Project,
entitled "Investigation of hard problems from the algorithmic and
structural standpoints'', funded by the São Paulo Research Foundation (

*Goals:*
Development of exact and approximation algorithms, as well as heuristics
for genome rearrangement problems involving reversals and transpositions
and focused on prefix/suffix, considering both the length-weighted version
and the traditional approach.
*Eligibility:*
The candidate must have a Ph.D. in Computer Science, Bioinformatics,
Applied Mathematics or in a related field. The candidate must have finished
the Ph.D. less than seven years before the beginning of the PD fellowship.
The candidate must have a solid experience in the design and analysis of
algorithms, approximation algorithms, and heuristics, demonstrated by
publications in peer-reviewed venues such as conferences and journals. The
candidate is expected to interact with other members of the project,
including masters and Ph.D. students and professors. Written and oral
communication skills in English are needed.
Previous experience with genome rearrangement problems is desirable. Have
work experience in research lab abroad, during the Ph.D. period, is a
positive aspect to be considered in the selection process.
*Fellowship:*
The post-doctoral fellowship includes a monthly stipend of R$ 7.373,10
(about USD 1,750 and EUR 1,580), access to the health-care system of
Unicamp, and research contingency funds (15% of the annual value of the

[DMANET] Postdoctoral position in the ANITI 3IA Institute - INRA Toulouse, France
and Machine Learning at INRA Toulouse, France*
The interdisciplinary institute in artificial intelligence of Toulouse,
named the Artificial and Natural Intelligence Toulouse Institute
(ANITI), is one of four institutes spearheading research on AI in
France. Part of a 24 chairs' program funded by ANITI, Thomas Schiex's
chair is on /Pushing the computational frontiers of reasoning with
logic, probabilities and preferences/. The chair and co-chair Simon de
Givry, working in a bioinformatic team at INRA Toulouse, are seeking a
postdoctoral fellow. The position is available immediately. The project
will be funded on a contract for at most four years with net salary of
2600€ or more per month with some teaching (64 hours per year on average).
Constraint programming (CP) is an AI /Automated Reasoning/ technology
with tight connections with propositional logic. It offers a problem
modeling and solving framework where the set of solutions of a complex
(NP-hard) problem is described by discrete variables, connected by
constraints (simple Boolean functions). Together with propositional
satisfiability, it is one of the automated reasoning approaches of AI,
where problems are solved exactly to provide rigorous solutions to
hardware or software testing and verification, system configuration,
scheduling or planning problems.
Discrete Stochastic Graphical Models (GMs) define a /Machine Learning/
technology where a probability mass function is described by discrete
variables, connected by potentials (simple numerical functions). GMs can
be learned from data and the NP-hard problem of identifying a Maximum a
Posteriori (MAP) labelling is often solved /approximately/ to tackle
several problems in Image and Natural Language Processing, among others.
The Cost Function Network framework with its associated C++ open source
award-winning solver toulbar2 <https://github.com/toulbar2/toulbar2>,
developed in our team, combine the ideas of Constraint Programming and
Stochastic Graphical Models. By solving the so-called Weighted
Constraint Satisfaction problem, toulbar2 is capable of simultaneously
reasoning on logical information described as Boolean functions and
gradual, possibly Machine Learned, information described as local
numerical functions.
To process the available information, the solver relies on a guaranteed
hybrid branch and bound algorithm. In this algorithm, pruning follows
from a variety of mechanisms that can either simplify the problem at
hand, provide primal solutions (using local search, rounding or
incomplete tree-search), or provide dual solutions and lower bounds.
Parallel solving offers new opportunities to organize these various
mechanisms differently in time, to exploit problem decompositions, to
apply stronger primal/dual reasoning, and to use Machine Learning to
guide search or decide which mechanism to activate based on the current
solving and/or a collection of instances of the same problem.
Experiments will be performed on large collections of real problem
instances, many of which are not known to be currently solvable. This
includes the possible application of toulbar2 onto current exciting
problems in Computational Protein Design (CPD), in collaboration with
molecular modellers and biochemists, and in the context of the ongoing
development of a dedicated CPD software with applications in Health,
Bioenergy and Green Chemistry.
The position is specifically open to highly creative researchers that
may quickly want to develop and explore their own ideas. As such, we
expect that the PostDoc will be increasingly capable of injecting their
own ideas in the project, in interaction with all the members of the
project team as well as external collaborators, and contribute to the
supervision of PhD students.
*Candidate profile*
The PostDoc is at the intersection of CP, SAT, integer programming,
metaheuristics, and distributed computing. The ideal candidate should
therefore be familiar with CP or SAT algorithms. He or she may also
benefit from background knowledge in the weighted variants of SAT/CP, in
Integer Linear Programming, or in Stochastic Graphical Models
processing. Some experience in the design and implementation of
multi-threaded/distributed code is a nice plus. Good programming
abilities (in C++ ideally) will be required. Additional knowledge in
bioinformatics, biochemistry, and molecular modelling would be a plus in
the context of CPD applications.

Special issue of the 'it - Information Technology' journal on the topic
'Algorithm Engineering'
'it - Information Technology' is the oldest German journal in the field
of information technology with the major aim to highlight issues on
ongoing newsworthy areas in information technology and informatics and
their application. It aims at presenting the topics with a holistic view
and addresses scientists, graduate students, and experts in industrial
research and development.
The special issue aims at highlighting the role of algorithm engineering
in trajectory data processing. The goal is to to cover the typical data
processing pipeline. Thus, we would like to invite contributions that
either discuss algorithm engineering techniques in the context of a step
in the pipeline, or show the impact of these techniques in a survey.

A challenging position in an international and ambitious research group. Authors are invited to submit original unpublished manuscripts that
demonstrate current research on distributed sensor systems related to
DCOSS topics of interest. Please use the US letter size (8.5 X 11 in)
standard IEEE conference LaTeX format or Microsoft Word template
available on the link below:

All submissions should be written in English and submitted as a full or
work-in-progress paper. Full papers should have a maximum of eight (8)
printed pages including figures and references. Full papers are expected
to describe fully developed ideas with a thorough evaluation.

including figures and references. Work-in-progress papers are expected
to describe new and interesting ideas that have not yet reached full
maturity.

active research programs in a broad spectrum of centrally important areas
of pure mathematics, computational and applied mathematics, mathematical
computer science, probability and statistics, and mathematics education.

The MSCS Department seeks applicants for an Assistant Professor to join the
Mathematical Computer Science group. Applicants working in the areas of
theoretical computer science and mathematical computing are especially
encouraged. Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in
mathematics, computer science or a related field, an outstanding research
record, and evidence of strong teaching ability. The salary is negotiable.
The position is effective August 16, 2020. Final authorization of the
position is subject to the availability of funding.
