[DMANET] PhD position in Classic and Quantum-Inspired Algorithms at Hamburg University of Technology

PHD POSITION IN CLASSIC AND QUANTUM-INSPIRED ALGORITHMS AT HAMBURG
UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY (TUHH)

The Institute of Algorithms and Complexity at TUHH: Hamburg University
of Technology (www.algo.tuhh.de) in Hamburg, Germany offers an exciting
opportunity to work as a PhD student at the forefront of
algorithms/optimization and quantum computing.

The successful candidate will research algorithms --- both classic and
quantum-inspired --- for discrete/combinatorial optimization problems,
mathematical programming, algorithmic game theory, or related field. We
provide close supervision and support by a panel of established
professors and scientists. Transferable skills and career development
are an integral part of the PhD program. The working language of the
institute is English.

The position is part of the Hamburg Quantum Computing Project
(https://www.physik.uni-hamburg.de/en/iqp/hqc/about-hqc.html), which is
co-financed by the European Union. Hamburg offers a vibrant and diverse
environment in quantum computing, both on the physics side as well as
the software/algorithms side. Indeed, Hamburg is considered the Quantum
Innovation Capital (https://www.hqic.de/de/), with an entire academic
and industrial ecosystem on quantum computing. Thus, there are many
opportunities for academic and industrial transfer at the forefront of
the quantum computing revolution.

This is a full-time position (100%) which comes with an employment
contract for 3 years and social security. The salary of the position is
determined according to level TV-L E-13 of the German public sector. The
exact amount of salary depends on experience, family circumstances, tax
classification and other factors. Travel funding is available, for
attending conferences and workshops, and visiting other researchers.

The successful candidate will join the TUHH Institute for Algorithms and
Complexity (www.algo.tuhh.de), whose research covers a broad spectrum of
algorithmic research; this includes algorithmic game theory,
combinatorial optimization, approximation and parameterized algorithms,
and applications in operations research and discrete mathematics. The
Institute for Algorithms and Complexity at TU Hamburg currently hosts
several international researchers, so English is used on a daily basis
as a working language.

The institute is located in the newly built Hamburg Innovation Port
(www.hamburg-innovation-port.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/01-HIPtuhhlogowasser_web.jpg),
which is located right at the Harburg harbour with great views of the
harbour and Hamburg's famous opera house (Elbphilharmonie). Several
other computer science institutes of the TU Hamburg are located in the
area, as well as DASHH - Data Science in Hamburg, the Helmholtz Graduate
School for the Structure of Matter, and the German Air and Space
Research Center (DLR). They are all located in the Free and Hanseatic
City of Hamburg, which is Germany's second largest city, home to a
population of about 1.8 million people. The city is famous for its wide
offers of entertainment, culture and attractions, with several
universities and much research in algorithms.

Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH) is one of the leading technical
universities in Germany, with almost 10,000 students in various
engineering subjects. It is part of Germany's national Strategy of
Excellence. Its goal is to develop Technology for Humanity. For its

An excellent Masters degree --- either already obtained or to be
completed soon --- in (Applied) Mathematics, Computer Science,
Operations Research, Engineering or related field is required. Affinity
with optimization, algorithms, or discrete mathematics is preferred. In
particular, background in algorithms and complexity, or mathematical
optimization is appreciated. Programming experience is considered a plus.

*Submissions Guidelines and Proceedings*

Manuscripts should be prepared in 10-point font using the IEEE 8.5" x 11"
two-column format. All papers should be in PDF format, and submitted
electronically at Paper Submission Link. A full paper can be up to 8 pages
(including all figures, tables and references). Submitted papers must
present original unpublished research that is not currently under review
for any other conference or journal. Papers not following these guidelines
may be rejected without review. Also submissions received after the due
date, exceeding length limit, or not appropriately structured may also not
be considered. Authors may contact the Program Chair for further
information or clarification. All submissions are peer-reviewed by at least
three reviewers. Accepted papers will appear in the GACLM Proceeding, and
be published by the IEEE Computer Society Conference Publishing Services
and be submitted to IEEE Xplore for inclusion.

Submitted papers must include original work, and must not be under
consideration for another conference or journal. Submission of regular
papers must follow the IEEE paper format. And include up to 7 keywords.
Authors of accepted papers are expected to present their work at the
conference. Submitted papers that are deemed of good quality but that could
not be accepted as regular papers will be accepted as short papers. Length
of short papers can be up to 6 pages.

SCOPE:

DeepLearn 2025 will be a research training event with a global scope aiming at updating participants on the most recent advances in the critical and fast developing area of deep learning. Previous events were held in Bilbao, Genova, Warsaw, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Guimarães, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Luleå, Bournemouth, Bari, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Porto.

Deep learning is a branch of artificial intelligence covering a spectrum of current frontier research and industrial innovation that provides more efficient algorithms to deal with large-scale data in a huge variety of environments: computer vision, neurosciences, speech recognition, language processing, human-computer interaction, drug discovery, biomedicine and health informatics, medical image analysis, recommender systems, advertising, fraud detection, robotics, games, business and finance, biotechnology, physics experiments, biometrics, communications, climate sciences, geographic information systems, signal processing, genomics, materials design, video technology, social systems, earth and sustainability, etc. etc.

The field is also raising a number of relevant questions about robustness of the algorithms, explainability, transparency, interpretability, as well as important ethical concerns at the frontier of current knowledge that deserve careful multidisciplinary discussion.

Most deep learning subareas will be displayed, and main challenges identified through 18 four-hour and a half courses, 2 keynote lectures, 1 round table and a hackathon competition among participants. Renowned academics and industry pioneers will lecture and share their views with the audience. The organizers are convinced that outstanding speakers will attract the brightest and most motivated students. Face to face interaction and networking will be main ingredients of the event. It will be also possible to fully participate in vivo remotely.

DeepLearn 2025 will place special emphasis on large language models, foundation models and generative artificial intelligence.

ADDRESSED TO:

Graduate students, postgraduate students and industry practitioners will be typical profiles of participants. However, there are no formal pre-requisites for attendance in terms of academic degrees, so people less or more advanced in their career will be welcome as well.

Since there will be a variety of levels, specific knowledge background may be assumed for some of the courses.

Overall, DeepLearn 2025 is addressed to students, researchers and practitioners who want to keep themselves updated about recent developments and future trends. All will surely find it fruitful to listen to and discuss with major researchers, industry leaders and innovators.

HACKATHON:

A hackathon will take place, where participants can work in teams to tackle several machine learning challenges. They will be coordinated by Professor Sergei V. Gleyzer (University of Alabama). The challenges will be released 2 weeks before the beginning of the school. A jury will judge the submissions and the winners of each challenge will be announced by August 25, 2025. The winning teams will receive a modest monetary prize and the runners-up will get a certificate.

Background and Purpose

Since the turn of the millennium there have been dramatic improvements
in algorithms for combinatorial solving and optimization. The flipside
of this is that as the methods get increasingly sophisticated, it
becomes increasingly harder to avoid bugs sneaking in during algorithm
design and implementation, and even the most mature tools currently
available struggle with incorrect results. Software testing, while
important, has not been sufficient to resolve this problem, and formal
verification methods are far from being able to scale to the level of
complexity in modern combinatorial solvers. During the last ten years
the Boolean satisfiability (SAT) solving community has instead
spearheaded the use of /proof logging/, meaning that the SAT solvers
have to output, along the answer to a problem, a machine-verifiable
proof that this answer is correct. Such solvers are also referred to as
/certifying algorithms/.

For a long time, attempts to extend proof logging to stronger paradigms
in combinatorial solving and optimization have met with limited success,
but has changed in the last few years with the introduction of
/pseudo-Boolean (PB) proof logging/. Pseudo-Boolean proofs operate with
0-1 integer linear inequalities using a version of the cutting planes
proof system, but have turned out to be a very convenient format also
for algorithms that reason in terms of very different concepts. The
/VeriPB <https://gitlab.com/MIAOresearch/software/VeriPB>/ tool
developed by the /Mathematical Insights into Algorithms for Optimization
(MIAO) <https://jakobnordstrom.se/miao-group/>/ research group in
Copenhagen/Lund and its collaborators has so far been shown to support
efficient proof logging for paradigms such as SAT-based optimization
(MaxSAT), pseudo-Boolean optimization, subgraph solving, constraint
programming, automated planning, and presolving techniques in 0-1
integer linear programming, as well as for techniques such as symmetry
breaking and dynamic programming.

These developments have been so fast that in 2024 the fairly spontaneous
idea arose to gather researchers in Europe working on pseudo-Boolean
proof logging to an informal gathering, which—reflecting the rather
improvised nature of the event—was named the /1st Workshop on Highlights
in Organizing and Optimizing Proof-logging Systems (WHOOPS '24)/
<https://jakobnordstrom.se/WHOOPS24/>. This year, the second edition of
the workshop will be held on September 13-14 in Orsay outside Paris
under the auspices of EuroProofNet <http://europroofnet.github.io/>.
While we still expect a healthy dose of pseudo-Boolean proof logging, we
are very much hoping to also discuss certifying algorithms for automated
reasoning more broadly, including satisfiability modulo theories (SMT)
solving and first- and higher-order theorem proving.

The International Symposium on Algorithmic Aspects of Cloud Computing (ALGOCLOUD) is an annual event aiming to tackle the diverse new topics in the emerging area of algorithmic aspects of computing and data management in modern cloud-based systems interpreted broadly so as to include edge- and fog-based systems, cloudlets, cloud micro-services, virtualization environments, decentralized systems, as well as dynamic networks.

ALGOCLOUD aims at bringing together researchers, students, and practitioners to present research activities and results on topics related to algorithmic, design, and development aspects of modern cloud-based systems. The 10th edition of this symposium (ALGOCLOUD 2025) is co-located with ALGO 2025, a leading international event of researchers working on algorithms and their engineering.

CALL FOR PAPERS
---------------
ALGOCLOUD invites submissions covering theoretical, design, and implementation aspects of modern cloud-based systems. It specifically encourages novel algorithms related to cloud and edge computing, cloud architectures, and the cloud-edge continuum. Experimental work evaluating contemporary cloud-edge approaches and relevant applications is of particular interest. Additionally, ALGOCLOUD welcomes demonstration manuscripts showcasing successful system developments, as well as articles discussing experiences, use cases, and high-quality survey papers. Contributions may encompass a broad spectrum of algorithms, practices, and techniques for modelling, building, and evaluating operations and services across various systems, including virtualized infrastructures, cloud computing platforms, edge computing platforms, fog computing platforms, data centers, cloud storage options, cloud data management, non-traditional key-value stores on the cloud, HPC architectures, decentralized systems, and dynamic networks.

All papers must be original and not simultaneously submitted to another journal or conference. The following paper categories are welcome:

Regular papers: Authors are invited to submit high-quality manuscripts reporting original unpublished research in the topics related to the symposium. A regular paper submission should clearly motivate the importance of the problem being addressed, discuss prior work and its relationship to the paper, explicitly and precisely state the paper's key contributions, and outline the key technical ideas and methods used to achieve the main results. A regular paper submission should not exceed 12 pages, including title page and abstract but excluding references and an optional appendix. Authors should include all necessary details in their submission so that the Technical Program Committee (TPC) can judge correctness, importance and originality of their work. Any material (e.g., proofs or experimental results) omitted (from the main part of 12 pages)due to space limitations can be put into the optional appendix, which will be read at the TPC's discretion. Regular papers will be allotted up to 20 pages in the proceedings.

Short papers: A short paper submission may present work-in-progress on a specific topic, or work appeared elsewhere but is worth publicizing it in the symposium, or a demonstration of a system or library, or an experience/use-case paper, or a vision paper. Authors should clearly motivate the importance of their contribution, discuss prior work and its relationship to the paper, and in general provide sufficient details in their submission so that the TPC can judge the quality and importance of their work. A short paper submission should be at least 2 and at most 8 pages. Short papers will be allotted up to 8 pages in the proceedings.

Survey papers: A survey paper submission concerns the write-up of a high-quality survey paper on an emerging hot topic. Authors are asked to submit a proposal between 5 and 10 pages, that clearly motivates the importance of the topic, and contains the structure of the survey paper along with the most important references that will be critically reviewed and presented. If the proposal is accepted, then authors will be given sufficient time to prepare the full version of their survey paper that needs to pass a quality control check by the TPC, in order to be finally accepted and appear in the proceedings. Survey papers will be allotted up to 40 pages in the proceedings.

In addition, the corresponding author of each paper, acting on behalf of all of the authors of that paper, must complete and sign a Consent-to-Publish form. The corresponding author signing the copyright form should match the corresponding author marked on the paper. Once the files have been sent to Springer, changes relating to the authorship of the papers cannot be made. Accepted papers will be included in the post-proceedings published by Springer in its Lecture Notes in Computer Science series.

AWARDS
---------------
Awards will be given to the best regular paper and the best student regular paper. A regular paper is eligible for the best student paper award if at least one of the authors is a full-time student (Bachelor, Master, or Ph.D.) at the time of submission and the student(s) must have made a major contribution to the paper. The TPC can decide to decline or to split the awards. Awards are sponsored by Springer.

The student will be supervised by Esther Galby. The starting date is negotiable, with a preferred date of September 1, 2025.
The main goal is to investigate the complexity of graph modification problems. The ideal candidate has a solid background in graph theory and some basic knowledge of parameterized algorithms and complexity.
