[DMANET] Second Announcement: CG Challenge 2020!

Dear colleagues,

As previously announced, the Second Geometric Optimization Challenge will
be part of CG Week in Zurich, Switzerland, June 22-26, 2020, and is about to begin:

Contest opens 12:00 (noon, EDT), September 30, 2019.
Contest closes 24:00 (midnight, AoE), February 14, 2020.

We are happy to announce that space in the SoCG proceedings (to be published
with LIPIcs) will be provided to the top performing teams, with invitations for the
submission of articles issued immediately after the conclusion of the contest. (In addition,
there may be an invitation for selected submissions to be considered for publication in the
ACM Journal on Experimental Algorithms, either as part of a special issue or as invited
submissions.)

As in 2019's Challenge, the objective will be to compute good solutions to instances
of a difficult geometric optimization problem. The specific problem chosen for
the 2020 Challenge is the following:

Given a set S of n points in the plane. The objective is to compute a plane graph with
vertex set S (with each point in S having positive degree) that partitions the convex hull
of S into the smallest possible number of convex faces.

The complexity of this problem is still unknown, but approximation algorithms
have been proposed; e.g., see Christian Knauer and Andreas Spillner:
Approximation Algorithms for the Minimum Convex Partition Problem,
SWAT 2006, pp. 232-241.

Further details are available via the challenge webpage,
https://cgshop.ibr.cs.tu-bs.de/competition/cg-shop-2020/
including a link for downloading problem instances, and to the submission
site for uploading solutions.

IMPORTANT NOVELTY:
In addition to the „Open Class" of the Challenge, in which solutions are only judged based on the
number of convex faces obtained (using any type of available computing equipment), we are
considering the introduction of a „Limited Class", which will be based on timed
execution on specific equipment at our site, with evaluation based on test runs for additional
benchmark instances. In addition, we would offer a „Junior Class" for teams consisting
exclusively of junior researchers.

As the setup for such a „Limited Class" comes with serious additional effort on our side,
we want to be sure that this is worth it. If you are interested in participating in these variants,
please write to us by October 14:
(1) Drop us a line/email voicing your interest.
(2) Add specific preferences or recommendations, if you have any.
Based on the feedback, we may announce further steps and details.

We are looking forward to your submissions!

[DMANET] The Highlights of Logic, Games, and Automata advertisement mailing list

The annual Highlights of Logic, Games, and Automata conference has grown
into a well-known and well-attended event, with already 7 past editions (
http://highlights-conference.org/).

We would like to introduce a new tool for strengthening its community: an
advertisement mailing list. This is the place to post about job openings
(including PhD studentships and research internships), calls for events,
and other announcements relevant to the research community working on
Logic, Games, and Automata, broadly construed.

*Please consider signing up here:*
https://diff.u-bordeaux.fr/sympa/info/highlights_community
or by sending an email to sympa@diff.u-bordeaux.fr with subject line:
subscribe highlights_community Firstname Lastname

The list is moderated to make sure that the emails are pertinent. It is not
meant to be a discussion forum, so only "announcements" will be
disseminated. There are several features offered by the sympa manager,
including: publicly available archives, digests, RSS.

Please note that this is a different mailing list than
labri.highlights@diff.u-bordeaux.fr, which is exclusively used for
announcements of the Highlights of Logic, Games, and Automata conference
(and collocated events).

Outer space is steadily evolving as a site of human-computer interactions.
With the ongoing investments of state and private companies in space
exploration, these interactions and their design are becoming increasingly
crucial for the unfolding of our futures on and beyond the globe. Yet
outside the Earth, our relations with technologies necessitate situational
adjustments, requiring a range of adaptive strategies designed to negotiate
the extreme extra-terrestrial. While the domain of
human-computer-interaction adopted methods from spaceflight as e.g. the
NASA Task Load Index (TLX), in this workshop we especially consider ways in
which the setting of outer space provides a testing ground for new forms of
designing and performing human-computer interactions. Through a range of
examples, we will explore the nuances emerging amidst exchanges between
humans, technologies and space environments, and address them from a range
of different research perspectives.

Things and Cyber-Physical Systems. After last year's positive experience
in China, the 17th edition returns to Europe in Lyon, France. The
conference continues its aim for broad, world-wide impact.

TOPICS OF INTEREST

The conference solicits both full technical papers and short papers
describing validated early ideas. Specific topics of interest include
but are not limited to:
- Communication and networking for wireless and embedded systems
- Sensing, actuation, and control
- Operating systems, middleware, and services
- Processing, storage, and management of data
- Programming paradigms, languages, and tools
- Time and location management
- Dependability (real-time, reliability, availability, safety)
- Privacy and security in applications and systems

dense, we encourage contributions addressing this increased
heterogeneity, and ultra dense networks. Papers highlighting novel ideas
that are not ready for extensive evaluations, report on new tools and
platforms with limited evaluation, or topics that could be adequately
described in a short format are invited for submission as short papers.
Initial explorations of profound problems in developing countries that
have been addressed using IoT solutions may also be appropriate short
paper submissions.

The conference proceedings will appear in the ACM Digital Library.
Selected accepted papers will be fast-tracked to ACM Transactions on
Sensor Networks (TOSN) or ACM Transactions on the Internet of Things (TIOT).

SUBMISSION
Submissions to EWSN 2020 must be original (i.e., not previously
published) and not currently under review by any other conference or
journal. EWSN 2020 will adopt a double-blind review process. Authors
must make a good faith effort to anonymize their submissions to ensure
that their identities are not disclosed to reviewers and reviewers are
discouraged from actively working to uncover author identities. To
promote early dissemination, submission to arXiv (or similar) is
allowed, provided cross-citations are not made.

Formatting requirements. Both full (10-12 pages) and short papers (4-6
pages) are welcome. Authors should carefully consider this choice as
full papers will not be considered as short paper candidates during the
review phase. Pages must use 8.5" x  11" (letter) two-column format,
using 10-point type on 11-point leading, with a maximum text block of 7"
wide x 9" deep with an inter-column spacing of .25". The page limits
include figures, tables, and references. Authors may use the LaTex
templates provided here.

[DMANET] Call for Competitors - EWSN 2020 (Competition entry deadline: September 27, 2019)

[Please accept our apologies if you receive multiple copies of this Call
for Competitors.]
----------------------------------------------------------------------
                         Call for Competitors

                5th Dependability Competition at the
Intl. Conf. on Embedded Wireless Systems and Networks (EWSN)

               February 17-19, 2020  -  Lyon, France

         http://ewsn2020.conf.citi-lab.fr/competition.html
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Following the success of the previous four editions, the International
Conference on Embedded Wireless Systems and Networks will host also
this year a dependability competition to benchmark the performance
of state-of-the-art low-power wireless protocols under the same
settings and in harsh RF environments.

********  IMPORTANT DATES  ********

- Competition entry deadline: September 27, 2019 (23:59, AoE)
- Notification of acceptance: October 11, 2019
- Remote preparation phase: from October 28, 2019  to  December 19, 2019
- Submission of the final binary file: December 20, 2019 (23:59, AoE)
- Evaluation phase: from December 21, 2019  to  February 16, 2020
- Camera-ready abstract: December 20, 2019 (23:59, AoE)
- Awards and poster session: February 17-19, 2020

********  SCENARIO AND CATEGORIES  ********

The competition scenario will emulate the operation of a wireless
sensor network where several co-existing devices are crowding the RF
spectrum. In particular, the messages generated by several source
nodes need to be collected at a single destination in a reliable,
timely, and energy-efficient way despite the presence of interference.

In contrast to the previous editions, this year's competition will make
use of nRF52840-DK wireless nodes. Contestants are free to use any of
the technologies and physical modes supported by this platform.

Two categories are planned for this year's edition:

1) Single-hop data collection. In this category, up to 20 source nodes
generate raw sensor values of different length, which should be sent to
the same destination. The latter is located in proximity of all source
nodes and can be reached directly, i.e., in normal conditions, the sink
can be reached by every source node within a single hop.

2) Multi-hop data collection. In this category, up to 60 source nodes
generate raw sensor values of different length, which should be sent to
the same destination. The latter may be located several hops away from
a source node, even when making use of the coded PHY layers available
on the nRF52.

A detailed description of the scenario and evaluation procedure can be
found on: http://ewsn2020.conf.citi-lab.fr/competition.html).

********  FORMAT  ********

The competition will take place remotely and the final results will be
announced during EWSN 2020 in Lyon.

Contestants willing to participate to the competition must submit a
short entry abstract describing their solution by the competition entry
deadline. The entry abstracts will be used to pre-select the teams
participating to the competition.

Accepted contestants will participate to a remote preparation phase
during which they can test and optimize their solution on the competition
infrastructure. At the end of this phase, all contestants will be asked
to provide a single binary file for the final evaluation phase.

Each competing team will have the possibility to publish a competition
abstract as part of the EWSN proceedings that will appear in the ACM
Digital Library. Furthermore, a poster session dedicated to the
dependability competition will take place during the main conference.

The winners of each competition's category will be awarded during a
dedicated plenary session of the main conference and will be able to
hold a plenary short presentation about their solution.

********  ELIGIBILITY  ********

Both academia and industry submissions are encouraged. Any low-power
wireless protocol is eligible and there is no restriction on the operating
system used to program the sensor nodes, nor on the wireless technology
used. There is also no requirement on the originality of the competing
solutions, which can be based on well-known protocols or previously
published material. The same team can participate in multiple categories.
The EWSN 2020 dependability competition will take place if at least six
teams competing in the same category respond to this preliminary call.

********  SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS  ********

Contestants must submit a short entry abstract describing their approach
by the competition entry deadline. This entry abstract should prominently
include the name of all members of the team, as well as their affiliation
and contact information. Furthermore, the entry abstract should clearly
state the categories for which the solution is intended. All submissions
will be treated as confidential until the camera-ready deadline.

Detailed information about the submission instructions can be found on:
http://ewsn2020.conf.citi-lab.fr/competition.html.

[DMANET] Autumn School on Advanced BCP Tools: Paris 21-22 November 2019

Autumn School on Advanced BCP Tools: Paris 21-22 November 2019

AUTUMN SCHOOL ON ADVANCED BCP TOOLS: VRPSolver and Coluna

Paris 21-22 November 2019

Registration, access and schedule:
https://www.lamsade.dauphine.fr/poc/?q=node/64

Branch-Cut-and-Price (BCP) algorithms, based on the combination of
column generation with cut separation, are obtaining the best results on
the exact solution of several combinatorial problems, in particular,
those related to Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP). However, devising and
implementing a state-of-the-art BCP can be a very demanding task,
measured on several work-months of a skilled team.
This school intends to:
- Review the techniques introduced in the last 10 years that
significantly increased the capabilities of BCP algorithms for VRPs:
ng-routes, hierarchical strong branching, route enumeration, advanced
implementation of dynamic programming labeling algorithms for pricing,
fixing by reduced costs and rank-1 cuts with limited memory.
- Introduce VRPSolver, a highly generic BCP algorithm for solving VRPs
and related problems, that already includes all the above mentioned
techniques. The VRPSolver model corresponding to a particular
application is coded using Julia language. A typical model has less than
100 lines of code, so users can already have a good working algorithm in
one day. Additional work on separation routines for problem specific
cuts may be needed for top performance. VRPSolver can be downloaded at
https://vrpsolver.math.u-bordeaux.fr
- Discuss "creative modeling" on VRPSolver. Several problems that are
not standard VRPs can be possibly modeled by using non-trivial
transformations, obtaining quite good performances. Known examples
include Generalized Assignment Problem, Bin Packing and Vector Packing
Problems, Parallel Machine Scheduling and Robust VRP.
- Present to the community the open-source Branch-Cut-and-Price (BCP)
framework Coluna, that is being developed collaboratively in Julia
language and is available under Mozilla Public Licence. VRPSolver
currently uses a private BCP framework. Future versions of VRPSolver
will be based on Coluna, allowing much more user control on the
algorithm strategies. Coluna should also feature support for parallel
computing.

- provide an overview of challenging future applications of VRPs.

- showcase BCPs for Graph Coloring problems.

Public: Researchers and PhD students. In particular, people from
polyhedral combinatorics that may profit from having a practical way of
using their cuts as part of an advanced BCP. A hands-on tutorial will be
given.
