[DMANET] Postdoc position in algorithms for big data, University of Warwick UK

We are seeking to recruit a Post-doctoral Research Fellow to work in the
area of algorithms for analysing large data sets. The position is based
at the University of Warwick, in the United Kingdom (UK).

You will be expected to perform high quality research under the
supervision of Professor Graham Cormode, as part of the ERC funded
project 'Small Summaries for Big Data'. This can encompass streaming
algorithms, sketching and dimensionality reduction, distributed
monitoring and mergable summaries, verification of outsourced
computation, or other related topics. The expectation is that you will
produce breakthough research results in the summarisation of large
volumes of data, and publish these results in top rated venues.

You will possess a PhD or an equivalent qualification in Computer
Science or a very closely related discipline (or you will shortly be
obtaining it). You should have a strong back ground in one of the
following areas: algorithm design and analysis; randomised and
approximation algorithms; communication complexity and lower bounds;
streaming or sublinear algorithms. The post is based in the Department
of Computer Science at the University of Warwick, but collaborations
with closely related research organisations such as the Centre for
Discrete Mathematics and its Applications (DIMAP), the Warwick Institute
for the Science of Cities (WISC) and the newly formed Alan Turing
Institute (ATI) will be strongly encouraged.

Candidates should provide with their application form a CV, a list of
publications and a research statement.

Closing date: 26th April 2017

[DMANET] SR 2017 - Preliminary Call for Papers

********************************************************
5th International Workshop on Strategic Reasoning
SR 2017 -- http://sr2017.csc.liv.ac.uk/
Liverpool, UK, July 26-27, 2017
********************************************************

Strategic reasoning is one of the most active research areas in the
multi-agent system domain. The literature in this field is extensive
and provides a plethora of logics for modelling strategic ability.
Theoretical results are now being used in many exciting domains,
including software tools for information system security, robot teams
with sophisticated adaptive strategies, and automatic players capable
of beating expert human adversaries, just to cite a few. All these
examples share the challenge of developing novel theories and tools
for agent-based reasoning that take into account the likely behaviour
of adversaries. The international workshop on strategic reasoning aims
to bring together researchers working on different aspects of strategic
reasoning in computer science, both from a theoretical and a practical
point of view.

SR 2017 will be co-located with TARK 2017, which will be held in Liverpool
on July 24-26, 2017.

LIST OF TOPICS

The topics covered by the workshop include, but are not limited to,
the following:

Logics for reasoning about strategic abilities;
Logics for multi-agent mechanism design, verification, and synthesis;
Logical foundations of decision theory for multi-agent systems;
Strategic reasoning in formal verification;
Automata theory for strategy synthesis;
Strategic reasoning under perfect and imperfect information;
Applications and tools for cooperative and adversarial reasoning;
Robust planning and optimisation in multi-agent systems;
Risk and uncertainty in multi-agent systems;
Quantitative aspects in strategic reasonings.

SUBMISSION

Extended abstracts should be submitted not exceeding 10 pages (plus
references) in the EPTCS format. If necessary, the work may be
supplemented with a clearly marked appendix, which will be consulted
at the discretion of the program committee. Submissions must be in PDF
format and will be handled via EasyChair:
https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=sr2017

Two types of submission are invited:

contributions reporting on novel research;
expository contributions reporting on published work.

Each submission should be clearly identified as belonging to one
category or the other. In both categories, strong preference will be
given to papers whose topic is of interest to an interdisciplinary
audience and all contributions should be written so that they are
accessible to such an audience.

Novel research abstracts will be held to the usual high standards of
research publications. In particular, they should contain enough
information to enable the program committee to identify the main
contribution of the work, explain the significance of the work, its
novelty, its relevance to the strategic reasoning audience, and its
practical or theoretical implications, and include comparisons with
and references to relevant literature.

Expository abstracts, which will be evaluated using similar high
standards, may survey an area or report on more specific previously
published work.

Submissions from PC members are also allowed. Note that, since the
workshop will have informal proceedings, extended versions of the
accepted papers can also be submitted elsewhere.

Important Dates

May 8, 2017: Abstract deadline
May 15, 2017: Submission deadline
June 16, 2017: Acceptance notification
June 30, 2017: Camera-ready deadline
July 26-27, 2017: Workshop

PROCEEDINGS

The workshop proceedings will be available as a single PDF file from
the workshop website.

Extended and revised versions of the best papers presented at the SR
workshop will be invited to a special issue.

[DMANET] Two positions of full-time researchers in Computer Science

---
We apologize if you receive multiple copies of this text.
---

CINVESTAV-IPN
Two positions in Computer Science

The Centro de Investigacion y de Estudios Avanzados (Center for Research and
Advanced Studies, Cinvestav after its name in Spanish), which is the top
public research center in Mexico, has two positions for full-time
researchers in Computer
Science to be filled for the Computer Science Department located at Mexico
City.

Candidates are required to have a PhD in Computer Science (or a related
field) and an outstanding research record, or a very good potential to
develop an outstanding
research career. Candidates from all areas of computer science are welcome
to apply.

Both junior and senior researchers are encouraged to apply for a position.
The type of appointment in turn could be as an Assistant or as an Associate
Professor.
The salary is competitive and varies depending on the curriculum of the
candidate (note that research experience is emphasized over teaching
experience).

The candidate is expected to have a light teaching load (one graduate-level
class per term), so that he/she can concentrate mostly on research
activities. Candidates do not need to be fluent in Spanish, as they can
teach in English.

CINVESTAV-IPN is the most important public research center in Mexico, with
645 full-time researchers and the second highest scientific productivity
(per researcher) of the country
(only after UNAM, which is the largest university in Mexico). The Computer
Science
Department offers both a MSc and a PhD program in Computer Science (
CINVESTAV-IPN only offers graduate programs). Both programs are included in
the National Graduate Program certification from CONACyT, which means that
all our Mexican full-time students receive
a stipend scholarship from the Federal Government (no tuition is required
for Mexican students).

The Computer Science Department of CINVESTAV-IPN currently has 17 full-time
researchers
and about 70 graduate students, and has research projects on Computer
architecture, Cooperative work, Cryptography, Databases, Evolutionary
computation, Optimization, Super computing and Visualization.

Interested candidates must send (via email to: jobs2013@cs.cinvestav.mx)
the following
information (as a single PDF file):

1) A detailed curriculum vitae that clearly indicates the publications in
international journals (highlighting the papers in journals included in the
Journal Citations Report), and a list of MSc and PhD graduates (if any).
The candidate should also include a copy of the three papers that he/she
considers as the most representative of his/her research. Note that papers
published in the Lecture Notes series from Springer will not be considered
as JCR papers.

2) A research statement that briefly (no more than 1 page) describes the
sort of research that the candidate has done so far and his/her research
plan in case of being hired.

3) A teaching statement that briefly (no more than 1 page) describes the
sort of graduate-level courses (in computer science) that the candidate can
teach (and has taught in the past, in case of having teaching experience).

4) The names and contact information (postal address, phone and fax number,
and email) of 3 references.

The screening of candidates will start at the end of June and the position
is expected to be filled by the end of 2017.

[DMANET] Funded PhD position in Distributed Systems at University of Oslo

Dear all,

Department of Networks and Distributed Systems group at University of
Oslo, Norway is looking for excellent doctoral students to work in the
exciting area of distributed systems:

http://www.mn.uio.no/ifi/english/research/doctoral-degree/seven-phd-research-fellowships-in-informatics/projects/p15-nd-social-notifications.pdf

*** The closing date for applications is April 18th, 2017. ***

Main objective and summary:

Devise novel concepts and mechanisms for deploying social notification
services. A particular emphasis is on the user satisfaction due to
delivered notifications and on allocation of resources. We plan to use
state-of-the-art data science and machine learning techniques to design
models for user satisfaction. The models will be constructed by
profiling large-scale user activities over time. Using these models, we
will develop replication strategies that consider user satisfaction
metrics in addition to scalability, efficiency and speed of notification
delivery.

We plan to build on our long-term collaboration and past research with
Spotify to carry out this project. While the main goal of this research
is to help enterprises that move their operation to the cloud, the
problem is also beneficial for minimizing resource consumption when
using in-house deployment.

Scope and objectives

In the light of the continuous growth of urban areas with respect to population and size, urban transportation systems are facing significant challenges such as traffic congestion, overcrowding, demand management and service availability. Sustainable transportation makes a positive contribution in addressing those challenges, as to its social, economic and environmental impact. It provides affordable access to all groups of citizens, promotes green vehicles, public transportation, new sharing paradigms like vehicle sharing and carpooling and encourages non-motorized modes of transport such as walking and biking. Policy makers, urban traffic planners and transportation system operators realize the need for sustainable transportation, robust transportation policies and demand management strategies. Along this line, they work towards alleviating congestion, making public transport more attractive, maintaining a high level of operational efficiency in the transportation system, responding -and, if possible, predicting and preventing- traffic incidents.

Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) aim at providing sophisticated management models and tools across all transport modes, traffic management, new-generation systems for infrastructure charging, and innovative real time travel information services. ITS facilitate city authorities and transportation professionals realize their visions as regards implementing and managing multimodal transportation networks and enabling citizens to be informed and make better use of these networks. It is a matter of critical importance for such systems and tools to scale so as to enable cities with different budgets to deploy them.

The ISUT workshop aims at soliciting original research related to frameworks, algorithmic solutions, applications and case studies in the scope of ITS and sustainable mobility in urban environments.

[DMANET] WPDM 2017 CFP

The first International Workshop on Parallel and Distributed Data Mining (WPDM 2017)

CALL FOR PAPERS

As part of The International Conference on High Performance Computing & Simulation (HPCS 2017)
http://hpcs2017.cisedu.info or http://cisedu.us/rp/hpcs17

July 17 – July 21, 2017
Genoa, Italy

Submission Deadline: April 3, 2017 (extended)

Submissions could be for full papers, short papers, poster papers, or posters

SCOPE AND OBJECTIVES

The Workshop on Parallel and Distributed Data Mining is an international forum which brings together researchers and practitioners working on different high-performance aspects of data mining algorithms, enabling novel applications.

Data mining techniques and algorithms to process huge amount of data in order to extract useful and interesting information have become popular in many different contexts. Algorithms are required to make sense of data automatically and in efficient ways. Nonetheless, even though sequential computer systems performance is improving, they are not suitable to keep up with the increase in the demand for data mining applications and the data size. Moreover, the main memory of sequential systems may not be enough to hold all the data related to current applications.

Therefore, there is an increasing interest in the design and implementation of parallel data mining algorithms. On parallel computers, by exploiting the vast aggregate main memory and processing power of processors and accelerators, parallel algorithms can easily address both the running time and memory requirement issues. Anyway, parallelising existing algorithms in order to achieve good performance and scalability with regard to massive datasets is not trivial. Indeed, it is of paramount importance a good data organisation and decomposition strategy in order to balance the workload while minimising data dependences. Another concern is related to minimising synchronisation and communication overhead. Finally, I/O costs should be minimised as well.

The Workshop will allow exchanging ideas and results related to on-going research, focusing on high-performance aspects of data mining algorithms and applications.

Creating breakthrough parallel algorithms for high-performance data mining applications requires addressing several key computing problems which may lead to novel solutions and new insights in interdisciplinary applications. The focus of the workshop is on all forms of advances in high-performance data mining algorithms and applications, and related topics.

The WPDM Workshop topics include (but are not limited to) the following:

- Scalable message-passing parallel data mining algorithms using MPI
- Scalable shared-memory parallel data mining algorithms using OpenMP

Objectives of the Workshop

ABSs are an increasingly popular tool for research and management in
many fields such as ecology, economics, sociology, etc. In some
fields, such as the social sciences, these models are seen as a key
instrument to the generative approach, essential for understanding
complex social phenomena. But also in policy-making, biology, military
simulations, control of mobile robots and economics, the relevance and
effectiveness of ABSs is recently recognized.

The computer science community has responded to the need for platforms
that can help the development and testing of new models in specific
fields by providing tools, libraries and frameworks that speed up and
make massive-scale simulations possible. The key objective of this
Fifth Workshop on Parallel and Distributed Agent-Based Simulations is
to bring together researchers that are interested in getting more
performance out of their simulations, by using synchronized, many-core
simulations (e.g., GPUs), strongly coupled, parallel simulations (e.g.
MPI) and loosely coupled, distributed simulations (distributed
heterogeneous setting) as well as on-demand simulation (cloud
setting).

Several frameworks have been recently developed and are active in this
field. They range from the GPU-many-core approach, to parallel, to
distributed simulation environments. In the first category, you can
find FLAME GPU, that allows also non-GPU specialists to harness the
GPUs performance for real time simulation and visualization. For
tightly-coupled, large computing clusters and supercomputers a very
popular framework is Repast for High Performance Computing (Repast
HPC), a C++-based modeling system. On the distributed side, recent
work on Distributed Mason, allows non-specialists to use heterogeneous
hardware and software in local area networks for enlarging the size
and speeding up the simulation of complex ABS models.

The Program Committee includes the main developers of the three
leading platforms in each of the distributed ABS fields (Repast HPC,
FLAME and MASON/D-MASON) and experts in the field of ABSs.

The workshop will allow presentation of regular papers (25 + 5
minutes). The papers will be presented in the regular format (12 pages
LNCS format) and will be reviewed, anonymously by at least 2 reviewers
of the Program Committee. Acceptance as regular papers will depend
upon scientific value and relevance to the workshop theme.

Special Sessions:

- Panel sessions on the OpenAB initiative (chaired by Paul Richmond,
University of Sheffield, UK)
- M.Sc/PhD Forum (chaired by Jonathan Ozik, Argonne National
Laboratory). The forum will provide an opportunity for M.Sc./Ph.D.
students in the fields of parallel/distributed ABSs to present their
thesis/dissertation research, including work in progress within the
topics of interest for PADABS 2017. To encourage interaction among
the M.Sc./Ph.D. students a full paper collecting the contributions of
the forum will appear in the workshop post-proceedings.

Topics of interest

- Frameworks for parallel/distributed ABSs
- Case studies of ABSs in parallel/distributed settings, with an
emphasis on the technical implementation, architectural choices and
their impact on performances
- Methods and techniques for applications of Deep Learning in
parallel/distributed ABSs
- Data structures for accelerating communication in ABSs
- Benchmark parallel/distributed ABSs
- Debugging parallel/distributed ABSs
- Formal methods and algorithms for ABSs in parallel/distributed models
- Load Balancing algorithms, techniques and frameworks
- Management and deployment of parallel/distributed ABSs
- Visualization of parallel/distributed ABSs
- Parallel/distributed frameworks for Model Exploration and Simulation
Optimization Process
- Open benchmark models contributing towards OpenAB initiative (www.openab.org)

Paper submission

The papers will be presented in the regular format (10 pages LNCS format)
and will be reviewed, anonymously by at least 3 reviewers of the
Program Committee.
Acceptance as regular/short papers will depend upon scientific value,
originality and relevance to the Workshop theme.

[DMANET] CP & OR Summer School - 1st Call for participation

Dear colleagues,

Let us introduce the *Joint ACP and GdR RO Summer School 2017*.
It will be held September, 18-22th, 2017 in Porquerolles island, France.

http://school.a4cp.org/summer2017

This summer school is co-organized by the ACP and the French constraint
programming working group for "Constraints and Operational Research"
within the CNRS research group "Operational Research".

The topic of the school is "*Hybridization of Constraint Programming and
Operational Research: from practical opportunities to concrete
implementation of solutions*".

During this week, participants will be raised awareness on several
classical and novel challenges at the frontier between Constraint
Programming and Operational Research. This year a focus will be done on
the tools that allow to provide concrete implementation of solutions.
Particularly, the participants will be challenged on a given problem
both in terms of modeling and implementation of a solution in their own
standalone tool.

The school is intended for PhD students, masters students and industrial
practitioners, who want to get a good understanding of capabilities and
current research directions in the area of Constraint Programming,
particularly at the frontier with Operational Research. Prior knowledge
of Constraint Programming is not required, but general problem solving
skills, good programming and mathematical skills will be helpful.

Any questions?

***** DESCRIPTION OF THE SPECIAL SESSIONS *****

* Special Session on Distributed Simulations of Distributed Systems

Distributed simulation (DS) is a valuable tool for understanding and
evaluating distributed systems. The current computing trend sees businesses
and individuals moving toward a more centralized infrastructure, namely the
cloud. On the one hand, as the computing infrastructure at data centers is
highly complex and distributed, DS becomes essential for diagnosing and
gaining insights of the system. On the other hand, the scale and nature of
interaction between different components in the cloud present new
challenges and push DS's state of the art.

Another computing trend that has potential to drive DS is
internet-of-things. Such complex systems consist of a large number of
autonomous, heterogeneous devices communicating with one another in
non-uniform manner. DS is valuable not only for discerning system
properties but also for predicting the devices' emergent behavior. Finally,
users in online social networks make up large distributed systems. Insights
of user interaction and the network's collective behavior --- the study of
which fits well into the realm of DS --- bring significant value to both
the society and the business of social network providers.

This special session seeks to bring together experts and practitioners in
the domain of DS to discuss new opportunities and challenges for DS. We
welcome research papers on both theoretical and empirical issues.

* Special Session on Agent-based Modeling and Simulation

This special session focuses on general aspects and special properties for
agent-based modeling and simulations that allows them to be applied on
several scientific domains, such as sociology, physics, chemistry, biology,
ecology, and economy. The session is intended to bring together researchers
and practitioners, so they can present the current status of their work and
discuss the challenges they face in developing solutions and applications
for agent-based simulations. Consequently, the design of these simulations
aims not only to social contexts but also to more technical domains, which
involves highly complex interactive systems.

[DMANET] Special Issue in Journal of Global Optimization: Distance Geometry Theory and Applications

Special Issue in Journal of Global Optimization: Distance Geometry
Theory and Applications
=========================================================

Following the Distance Geometry Theory and Applications (DGTA16)
workshop, organized at DIMACS last July 2016
<http://dimacs.rutgers.edu/Workshops/Distance/>,
a special issue dedicated to the topics of the workshop, but open to
everyone, have been set up
in the Journal of Global Optimization (JOGO). This issue will be
co-edited by:
- Farid Alizadeh (Rutgers University, USA)
- Douglas Goncalves (Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Brazil)
- Nathan Krislock (Northern Illinois University, USA)
- Leo Liberti (CNRS & Ecole Polytechnique, France).
We are therefore calling for contributions to this issue.

The submission deadline is: 31 May 2017. Submissions are made through
the web editorial manager:
- JOGO (Springer): <http://www.editorialmanager.com/jogo>

In the system, one of the first screens after specifying the title asks
you for "paper type". This is where you MUST click on the "S.I. :
DGTA16" (or similar label), since otherwise the paper will go directly
to the Editor-in-Chief rather than to our issue. The refereeing process
will involve at least two referees per paper. You do not need to specify
a list of possible referees. As soon as a submission comes in, it will
be handled. So if your paper is ready, submit it now rather than close
to deadline! For transparency: submissions co-authored by one of the
guest co-editors will be handled by the Editors-in-Chief of the journal,
and the process will be completely hidden from the guest editorial
board.

Distance Geometry (DG) in its broader definition is the study of
geometry mostly based on distances between entities. More specifically,
DG is the study of metric spaces. Its main problem is the DG Problem (or
DGP), which is an inverse problem that occurs frequently in many
applications, such as e.g. to localization of wireless networks,
synchronization protocols, determination of protein structure (or
nanostructures) through NMR data, localization of fleets of autonomous
underwater vehicles, flexibility or reach of robotic structures,
rigidity of architectural structures, and more. Given an integer K and a
graph G=(V,E) with weights d_ij on the edges {i,j}, the problem is to
determine positions x_i (for each vertex i) in a K-dimensional Euclidean
space such that, for each edge {i,j} the length of the segment between
x_i and x_j and is exactly, or approximately, the given distance value
d_ij. By "length of segment" we mean the Euclidean norm, but there are
applications that call for the use of other norms. Related fields
include embeddings of metric spaces with some distortion, the restricted
isometry property, Erdos' distances problem.

Feel free to get in touch with any of us if you want to ask us for
advice on your submission. In general, a heads up about a paper you want
to submit to this issue is welcome!

[DMANET] PhD position at the Ecole des Mines de Saint-Etienne (France)

***PhD position at the Ecole des Mines de Saint-Etienne (France)***

The research pursued by the PhD student will concern the development of
new models and original solution methods for the optimization of
planning operations for end-of-life products. It aims at addressing
problems dealing with the newly introduced concept of circular economy
and greenhouse gas emissions, recently raised by the French government.
Companies are currently facing two antagonist objectives. On the one
hand, they must ensure a local economic development that creates wealth;
on the other hand, they must satisfy environmental constraints related
to their production. In this challenging context, one of their major
issues is to minimize the consumption and waste of raw materials while
limiting the use of non-renewable energies.

Meanwhile, new communicating technologies could provide necessary
traceability information about end-of-life products, their state and the
state of their components. This information can help organizing and
optimizing remanufacturing and disassembly processes. The process of
valuing end-of-life products could be economically viable, and therefore
valuable from an industrial point of view.

In the light of the above background, this thesis focuses on the use and
advantage taking of new communicating technologies in remanufacturing
and disassembly systems. The goal is to develop new models and original
solution methods for planning remanufacturing and disassembly systems
that exploit this new procured information, while satisfying both
resource and environmental constraints. The proposed news approaches
will be defined and tested with industrial partners.

*Candidate profile:* Applicants must have a Master Degree (or
equivalent) in Computer Sciences, Applied Mathematics or any related
discipline. Applicants should demonstrate good programming skills and a
deep knowledge in combinatorial optimization and integer programming.

*Location:* The PhD student will be located in Gardanne (south of
France, near Aix-en-Provence) in the research group Manufacturing
Sciences and Logistics of the Georges Charpak Provence Campus of the
Ecole des Mines de Saint-Etienne.

*Duration and assumption of duty:* The position is for three years
starting September 1, 2017 (exact date is negotiable).

*Application procedure:* Please send your application electronically
(preferably as a single pdf file) including a detailed curriculum vitae
and examination results, plus, if available, a list of reference letters
and copies of diploma, to: Nabil ABSI (absi@emse.fr) or Valeria BORODIN,
(valeria.borodin@emse.fr). The position will remain open until fulfilled.
