[DMANET] Postdoc in Algorithmic Topology at the University of Queensland

Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Algorithmic Topology
School of Mathematics and Physics
The University of Queensland, Australia

Excellent opportunity for a researcher to work in a stimulating and
challenging research team environment.

The Discipline of Mathematics (http://www.maths.uq.edu.au/) within the
School of Mathematics and Physics seeks to appoint a Postdoctoral
Research Fellow Level A for a period of one or two years.

The Role: As the successful applicant, you will conduct research on an
Australian Research Council Discovery Project with the Chief
Investigators: Dr Benjamin Burton and Dr Stephan Tillmann (University of
Queensland) and Dr Murray Elder (University of Newcastle). The title of
the project is "Generic complexity in computational topology: breaking
through the bottlenecks". You should have demonstrated research
capability in one or more of the areas of geometric topology, complexity
theory, geometric group theory, and algorithm design.

The Person: The successful appointee will develop and analyse algorithms
in low-dimensional topology. You will use new ideas from generic
complexity theory to capture the theoretical limitations of current
algorithms in knot theory and 3-manifold topology, and will work to
overcome these limitations by developing new algorithms with
applications in areas such as the homeomorphism problem, normal surface
theory, and the virtual fibration conjecture. Your work will have a
significant impact in the burgeoning fields of computational topology
and generic complexity. Applicants must possess the appropriate
qualifications (PhD level or equivalent) plus have an excellent research
record.

Remuneration: The remuneration package will be in the range $67,958 -
$72,950 p.a., plus employer superannuation contributions of 17%. This is
a full-time, fixed term appointment for one or two years at Research
Academic level A.

Applications close: 31 January 2011.

Reference No: 3014163.
