SCOPE
The conference provides a forum for engineers and scientists in academia,
industry and government to present their latest research findings
in any aspects of distributed computing.
Topics of particular interest include, but are not limited to:

- Algorithms and Theory

NOTE: To build a broad program and to encourage a diverse set of submissions,
a limited number of papers will be accepted within each topic area,
and every topic area will accept a minimum quota of papers.

Workshops will be held in conjunction with the conference.

Notification of acceptance will be made by October 10th, 2013. Please see

PAPER SUBMISSION
Form of Manuscript: All paper submissions should follow the IEEE 8.5" x
11" Two-Column Format.
Each submission can have 10 pages. If the paper is accepted for
publication, up to 2 overlength pages
may be purchased for the final camera-ready version. Submitted papers
should NOT be blinded for review.

The Eleventh International Conference on Integration of Artificial
Intelligence and Operations Research Techniques in Constraint
Programming will be held in Cork, Ireland, May 19-23, 2014 with
Workshops on May 19th, a Master Class on Data Mining, Machine Learning
and Constraint Programming on May 20, and the Main Conference on May
21-23, 2014.
The aim of the conference is to bring together interested researchers
from Constraint Programming (CP), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and
Operations Research (OR) to present new techniques or new applications
in combinatorial optimization and to provide an opportunity for
researchers in one area to learn about techniques in the others. A
main objective of this conference series is also to give these
researchers the opportunity to show how the integration of techniques
from different fields can lead to interesting results on large and
complex problems. Therefore papers that actively combine, integrate,
or contrast approaches from more than one of the areas are especially
solicited. High quality papers from a single area are also welcome,
provided that they are of interest to other communities involved.
Finally, application papers showcasing CP/AI/OR techniques on
innovative and challenging applications or experience reports on such
applications are strongly encouraged.
The program committee invites submissions that include but are not
limited to the following topics:
* Inference and relaxation methods: constraint propagation, cutting
planes, global constraints, graph algorithms, dynamic programming,
Lagrangean and convex relaxations, heuristic functions based on
constraint relaxation.
* Search methods: branch and bound, intelligent backtracking,
incomplete search, randomized search, column generation and other
decomposition methods, local search, meta-heuristics.
* Integration methods: static/dynamic problem decomposition, solver
communication, transformations between models and solvers,
collaboration between concurrent methods, models, and solvers.
* Modeling methods: comparison of models, symmetry breaking,
uncertainty, dominance relationships.
* Innovative Applications of CP/AI/OR techniques.
* Implementation of CP/AI/OR techniques and optimization systems.

Paper submissions are of two types: Long papers and short papers.
INSTRUCTION FOR LONG PAPERS:
Long papers should present original unpublished work and be at most 15
pages plus references in length, and should be prepared in the format
used for the Springer Lecture Notes in Computer Science series
(http://www.springer.de/comp/lncs/authors.html). These papers will
undergo rigorous review. The proceedings will be published in the
Springer Lecture Notes in Computer Science series.
NOTE: Unlike previous CPAIOR conferences the page limit for long
papers is 15 LNCS pages *plus references*.
INSTRUCTION FOR SHORT PAPERS: Short papers are also encouraged,
limited to 8 LNCS pages plus references and should be prepared with
the same format as long papers
(http://www.springer.de/comp/lncs/authors.html). Although containing
less material, short papers should describe original unpublished work
and will be reviewed to the same criteria of quality as long papers.
It is also encouraged to submit short papers about work in progress on
ideas that are interesting but for which the practical or theoretical

at the conference and published in the conference proceedings.

The 3rd International Symposium in Combinatorial Optimization (ISCO 2014) will take place in Lisbon, March 5-7 2014, in Campo Grande, Lisboa, Portugal.

Security is an essential issue to be covered by current information and
communication technologies, as services provided both to systems and
users must be reliable. However, most available security related
solutions mainly rely on the deployment of prevention and/or detection
schemes. This in some sense passivity of the defense system limits in
several aspects its capabilities and thus those of the overall
environment.
Given the increasing complexity of networking and communication systems
at present, proactive security solutions offer a number of benefits with
respect to passive security solutions. As such, novel and effective
proactive security related approaches are highly encouraged. Adoption of
these new technologies and methodologies will contribute to increase the
robustness of the environment by leveraging concepts such as response,
collaboration, tolerance, auto-configuration and adaptability, etc.
In this context, the goal of the WASMAS workshop is to contribute new
advances and trends in the use and deployment of agent-like security
related systems, that is schemes composed of pro-active elements with
acting capacities. It is expected that this kind of systems will be of
indubitable help for developing next generation networks, services and
systems.

The Department of Computer Science has 36 research oriented tenure-track

award winners in the department. Research expenditures during FY2013 were
$11.7 million; total research funding at the beginning of FY2014 was $34
million. BS, MS, and PhD degrees are offered, with an enrollment of over
550 undergraduate majors (12% women) and over 200 PhD/MS students. In
2010, CS@VT was ranked 5th in the country in recruiting quality of CS
undergrads by the Wall Street Journal. The department is in the College of

Professor Leslie Ann Goldberg is looking for two postdoctoral researchers to join the ERC project "Mapping the Complexity of Counting" at the University of Oxford.

The overall objectives of the project are:
* To map out the landscape of computational counting problems (both exact and approximate), determining which problems are tractable, and which are intractable (quantifying the extent of tractability).
* To discover complexity characterisations which elucidate the features that make counting problems tractable or intractable (telling us why each problem is tractable or intractable).
Within the context of these overall objectives, the goal is to study classes of counting problems which are as wide as possible (obviously including the problems that arise in practice), and within these classes, to develop complexity dichotomies/characterisations which are as precise as possible. The key problem domains that will be considered are graph homomorphism problems (including generalised weighted homomorphism problems), counting constraint satisfaction problems and holant problems. Key challenges include determining the effect of restrictions such as planarity, bipartiteness and bounded-degree constraints on the complexity of graph-theoretic counting problems.
Candidates should have a PhD in algorithms and complexity or in a closely related area of discrete mathematics. Expertise in one or more of the following would be helpful: combinatorics or discrete probability, graph polynomials or partition functions, mixing rates of Markov chains, constraint satisfaction problems including algebraic methods for classifying their difficulty, holographic algorithms or holant problems.

The overall objectives of the project are:
* To map out the landscape of computational counting problems (both exact and approximate), determining which problems are tractable, and which are intractable (quantifying the extent of tractability).
* To discover complexity characterisations which elucidate the features that make counting problems tractable or intractable (telling us why each problem is tractable or intractable).
Within the context of these overall objectives, the goal is to study classes of counting problems which are as wide as possible (obviously including the problems that arise in practice), and within these classes, to develop complexity dichotomies/characterisations which are as precise as possible. The key problem domains that will be considered are graph homomorphism problems (including generalised weighted homomorphism problems), counting constraint satisfaction problems and holant problems. Key challenges include determining the effect of restrictions such as planarity, bipartiteness and bounded-degree constraints on the complexity of graph-theoretic counting problems.
Candidates should have a PhD in algorithms and complexity or in a closely related area of discrete mathematics. Expertise in one or more of the following would be helpful: combinatorics or discrete probability, graph polynomials or partition functions, mixing rates of Markov chains, constraint satisfaction problems including algebraic methods for classifying their difficulty, holographic algorithms or holant problems.

The CATS committee cordially invites proposals for tasks to be run as part of the "Competition on Applied Text Searching 2014 (CATS'14)", which is intended to be an ongoing series of evaluations of text searching algorithms. The main goal of the CATS series is to explore the potentialities of the most recent advances in text searching on real world problems. We particularly aim to provide a fruitful platform, where the practical demands would be better sensed by the academia, and the advances in algorithm design and engineering would be more apparent to the industry.

COMPETITION TASKS
Tasks are typically focused on the design and implementation of efficient, correct algorithms, in the field of text searching, including exact, approximate, single and multiple strings. Any problem definitions extending these fundamental topics as well as introducing new concepts or dimensions are surely very welcome. We especiallyencourage tasks on diverse data sets that are relevant in (but not restricted to) searching biological/DNA sequences, musical sequences, binary data, encrypted texts, natural language texts, compressed data, numerical sequences, dictionaries, images, specialized texts, etc. Tasks based on purely theoretical or open-ended problems, i.e., tasks that do not necessarily have a known efficient or optimal solution may also be considered. In typical setting, the tasks are expected to evaluate solutions in terms of correctness and speed (CPU running times). However, tasks with alternative measures of solution effectiveness other than CPU time consumption w!
ill be also taken into account. It will help us a lot if tasks are designed in such a way that they can be run and scored automatically from a central website or from a freely available tool. We will be happy to help with task design, data formatting, and so on. Task proposals must be submitted in English and must include an email address and information on the task author(s) including name, affiliation, and country.
To ensure a fair and interesting competition for all participants, proposed tasks should ideally contain:
1. Abstract
The abstract will contain a short description of the task and of the data which will be used for the evaluation.
2. Introduction and Motivation
This section will present an introduction to the problem containing some historical informations and the most significant references. It will include also applications and motivations of the problem proposed in the task.
3. Task Description
This section will present a detailed description and a formal definition of the problem involved in the proposed task. It will include technical details about input and output data.
4. Evaluation Procedure and Environment
This section will describe very clearly the procedure to evaluate the submitted solutions. It is expected that all submissions for the task will be checked for correctness and then compared in terms of speed via an automatic system. The proposers may consider to use the smart research tool (http://www.dmi.unict.it/~faro/smart), which is a platform to automatically score and compare string matching algorithms. It might be also possible, and we will be happy, to extent and tune the smart tool according to the needs of the tasks. However, the proposers are surely free to offer their own evaluation procedure with their own tools according to their specific needs. It is also vital to announce the details of the computing device that will be used throughout the evaluation, such as the CPU information, memory, operating system, or any other task specific properties.
5. Data Format
This section will explain the data format which will beused for the evaluation, and the description of the textand of the set of patterns.
6. Basic Solution
While not strictly required, it is strongly preferred that the submission also includes at least one implementation of the desired solution, attached as a separate file. It will be considered as the basic solution to be outperformed in the final evaluations process.
7. Reward Proposal
Although not mandatory, we strongly suggest the task authors to offer a reward for the winner, which will help to receive more attention to the specific task. In this case description of the reward and the constraint to complywith the reward must be given. The rewards may be considered in the form of cash money, grant for attending the conference or even a job contract. However, the reward proposal is at author's complete discretion.
Submitted tasks must be kept strictly confidential until the end of CATS 2014. After this time, authors are free to do whatever they wish with the tasks. A set of task proposals will be selected by the CATS Committee on the basis of their interest to the community, peculiarity and novelty.
The set of final selected tasks will be announced by December10, 2013.

We invite you to participate in the IFORS 2014 Conference and to
submit an abstract.

The IFORS 2014 Triennial Conference will be held in Barcelona, Spain,
July 13-18 2014. It will bring operational researchers from around the
globe together.
Barcelona is a dynamic, open, and inviting city, in the Mediterranean
coast of Spain, which displays the characteristics of major
Mediterranean cities and inherits a millenarian tradition in science,
art and commerce. The venue is Barcelona International Convention
Center, which was built for Barcelona's International Cultural Forum
in 2002 and counts with all the facilities to host major conferences.
The Conference Organizing and Program Committees together represent
many countries from all five continents, bringing the research,
applications and perspectives of their areas to this international
forum. We are working to prepare an attractive scientific program
covering the full spectrum of topics in our field, with a diverse and
high quality number of participants sharing their knowledge and
experience of operational research.
All attendees, including speakers and session chairs, must register
and pay the registration fee. If you need an early confirmation for

AIM AND SCOPE

The International Series of Conferences on the Practice and Theory of
Automated Timetabling (PATAT) is held biennially as a forum for both
researchers and practitioners of timetabling to exchange ideas. PATAT 2014
which is the tenth in the conference series will be held in York, UK.
Whether it is sporting events, educational institutions, transportation or
employee management the construction of efficient timetables which provide
the maximum in way of flexibility for all constituent parts is as important
as it is challenging. An increasingly important aspect within organisations
is an automated approach which maximises all aspects of resource usage. In
doing so a number of quantitative and qualitative challenges must be dealt
with from both a technical and practical perspective.
An important aim of the conference is to align the needs of practitioners
and the objectives of researchers. This is achieved through the presentation
and application of leading edge research techniques. Practitioners and
Researchers alike are encouraged to present their work and experiences with
the overall goal of developing efficient and practical solutions. With this
goal in mind, at PATAT 2014, researchers and practitioners will be brought
together through a number of key presentations and workshops.

PUBLICATION
------------
Authors are invited to submit their work in one of three categories:
1) Full papers: Authors should submit papers describing significant,
original and unpublished work.
2) Abstracts: People who wish to give a talk (e.g. practitioners,
researchers with preliminary or incomplete papers) but do not want to submit
a full paper can submit abstracts of up to 1000 words.
3) System demonstrations: Authors can also submit an abstract, describing
the major properties and contribution of implemented and/or commercial
timetabling systems.
All submissions will be peer reviewed by at least three members of the
programme committee. Accepted papers will be invited for an oral
presentation at the event and included in the PATAT 2014 proceedings after
they are presented.
JOURNAL SPECIAL ISSUE
----------------------
Authors will be invited to submit extended versions of their original work
as full papers for consideration to be published in a Special Issue of the
Annals of Operations Research.

[DMANET] permanent faculty position in Discrete Mathematics at the University of Birmingham
The University of Birmingham (UK) is seeking to recruit a researcher who has demonstrated excellent research achievement in any area of Discrete Mathematics.
This position is within the Birmingham fellowship scheme. Birmingham fellowships are prestigious permanent faculty positions, with a probationary period of three years. The positions are made especially attractive by the fact that the first 5 years come with (additional) protected time for high-quality research: there will be a significantly reduced teaching load for the first five years with almost no teaching in the first year, gradually going up to the full load. At the end of the five years the fellowship is transferred to a position at the appropriate level (Lecturer/Reader), which would be equivalent to an Associate Professorship within the US system.
Discrete Mathematics is one of the priority areas for the current call.
Applicants would be expected to have at least a year's postdoc or so, but they could also be (much) more senior.
The deadline for applications is 23 November 2013. The starting date is flexible - sometime in 2014.

and Complexity Department (directed by Kurt Mehlhorn). The department currently
conducts research in the areas foundations and discrete mathematics,
combinatorial optimization, bio-inspired computation, computational geometry,
computer algebra, algorithmic game theory, and software libraries. More

This is a five-year appointment at the W2 level, which is roughly equivalent to
the assistant or associate professor level in the US system. All of our previous
Group Leaders have secured tenured professorships during their time at the
