** Aims of the Workshop **

The current World-Wide Web enables an easy, instant access to a vast amount of online information. However, the content in the Web is typically for human consumption, and is not tailored for machine processing. The Semantic Web is hence intended to establish a machine-understandable Web, and is currently also used in many other domains and not only in the Web. The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) has developed a number of standards around this vision. Among them is the Resource Description Framework (RDF), which is used as the data model of the Semantic Web. The W3C has also defined SPARQL as the RDF query language, RIF as the rule language, and the ontology languages RDFS and OWL to describe schemas of RDF. The usage of common ontologies increases interoperability between heterogeneous data sets, and the proprietary ontologies with the additional abstraction layer facilitate the integration of these data sets. Therefore, we can argue that the Semantic Web is ideally designed
to work
in heterogeneous Big Data environments.

We define Semantic Big Data as the intersection of Semantic Web data and Big Data. There are masses of Semantic Web data freely available to the public - thanks to the efforts of the linked data initiative. According to http://stats.lod2.eu/ the current freely available Semantic Web data is approximately 150 billion triples in over 2,800 datasets, many of which are accessible via SPARQL query servers called SPARQL endpoints. Everyone can submit SPARQL queries to SPARQL endpoints via a standardized protocol, where the queries are processed on the datasets of the SPARQL endpoints and the query results are sent back in a standardized format. Hence, not only Semantic Big Data is freely available, but also distributed execution environments for Semantic Big Data are freely accessible. This makes the Semantic Web an ideal playground for Big Data research.

The goal of this workshop is to bring together academic researchers and industry practitioners to address the challenges and report and exchange the research findings in Semantic Big Data, including new approaches, techniques and applications, make substantial theoretical and empirical contributions to, and significantly advance the state of the art of Semantic Big Data.

** Types of Papers **

The workshop solicits papers of different types:
- Research Papers propose new approaches, theories or techniques related to Semantic Big Data including new data structures, algorithms and whole systems. They should make substantial theoretical and empirical contributions to the research field.
- Experiments and Analysis Papers focus on the experimental evaluation of existing approaches including data structures and algorithms for Semantic Big Data and bring new insights through the analysis of these experiments. Results of Experiments and Analysis Papers can be, for example, showing benefits of well-known approaches in new settings and environments, opening new research problems by demonstrating unexpected behavior or phenomena, or comparing a set of traditional approaches in an experimental survey.
- Application Papers report practical experiences on applications of Semantic Big Data. Application Papers might describe how to apply Semantic Web technologies to specific application domains with big data demands like social networks, web search, e-business, collaborative environments, e-learning, medical informatics, bioinformatics and geographic information system. Application Papers might describe applications using linked data in a new way.
- Vision Papers identify emerging new or future research issues and directions, and describe new research visions having demands for Semantic Big Data. The new visions will potentially have great impacts on society.

[DMANET] AAAC, May 5-7, 2017

The 10th Annual Meeting of the Asian Association for Algorithms and Computation (AAAC) will take place at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Hong Kong on May 5-7, 2017. AAAC was founded in 2007, aiming at promoting collaborations in theoretical computer science within the region. The website of AAAC is at http://www.aa-ac.org/ and the website of AAAC 2017 is http://aaac2017.cse.ust.hk/

Authors are invited to submit one-page abstracts (A4 size in pdf format) that can be based on original results or surveys of existing results in theoretical computer science. The submission will be handled by Easychair (https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=aaac17). An informal collection of the one-page abstracts will be distributed at the meeting, which does not prevent any future publication of the results.

An accepted contributed talk is given about 20 minutes. Some will be accepted as long contributed talks and will be given about 30 minutes. In addition to contributed talks, there will be two invited talks and two tutorials. The first tutorial will be scheduled in the afternoon of May 5 before the welcome reception in the evening of May 5. The main meeting will start on May 6 and end on May 7. There will be a dinner banquet on May 6.

DESCRIPTION
After last year's success, we are happy to announce the return of the
International Workshop on Exploring Old Maps (EOM). Many libraries own
an extensive collection of historical maps. Beside their value as
historical objects, these maps are an important source of information
for researchers in various scientific disciplines. This ranges from the
actual history of cartography and general history to the geographic and
social sciences. With the progressing digitisation of libraries and
archives, these maps become more easily available to a larger public. A
basic level of digitisation consists of scanned bitmap images, tagged
with some basic bibliographic information such as title, author and year
of production. In order to make the maps more accessible, further
information describing the contained information is desirable. This
would enable more user-friendly interfaces, relevant queries of a
database, and automatic analyses.

TARGETED AUDIENCE
The purpose of this workshop is to provide a forum for the communication
of results (which may appear elsewhere) that may be useful to the
community. Researchers and practitioners of all areas working on
unlocking the content of old maps are welcome to participate. We welcome
humanities scholars, developers, computer and information scientists as
well as librarians, archivists and curators. Submissions are welcome
from researchers at all career stages.

SCOPE OF INTEREST
Relevant topics are (but are not limited to) the following:
* Spatial analysis and applications of GIS concerning old maps
* Design and application of algorithms for analysis and visualisation
methods
* Digital media, digitisation, curation of digital objects
* Crowdsourcing, user research, citizen science, and public humanities

ABSTRACT SUBMISSION
Authors are invited to submit abstracts for presentations, posters and
demonstrations.

The workshop will not have formal proceedings. Therefore, abstracts
submitted to the EOM 2017 may report on work in progress, be submitted
to other places, and they may even already have appeared or been
accepted elsewhere. We particularly welcome submissions that have the
potential to stimulate the collaboration between the humanities and
computer science. The reviewing process will mainly determine whether a
submitted abstract promises to fit into the scope of this workshop.
Based on the review and its mandate to create a balanced and varied
program, the Program Committee will decide about the acceptance of
submissions.

The authors of the papers accepted for EOM 2017 will be invited to
submit the final versions of their abstracts for on-line publication in
the digital workshop booklet and will be considered for a special issue
in an appropriate journal. Abstracts must be submitted to EOM 2017 via
EasyChair<https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=eom2017>. Each
submission must specify its type in the EasyChair submission form. The
abstracts must not exceed 2 pages and the second page must contain only
references and figures. All submissions must use the provided Word or

SIGEVO is a special interest group of ACM always looking for new ways to
improve the research and learning on genetic and evolutionary computation.

In this quest for disseminating the knowledge and making activities in
this domain we will organize, for the first time, a Summer School around
GECCO 2017 in Berlin: S3 (Sigevo Summer School).


We seek for PhD students to participate in this great event, offering:

1. One day before GECCO (July 14th), with lectures and interactions to
world class researchers in this domain.

2. Two days after GECCO (July 20th and 21st) of discussions,
presentations, and joint works.

3. Oriented interactions and learning in tutorials and sessions of GECCO.

4. Great networking opportunities and up to 6 awards to recognize
outstanding performance.


The many appealing activities during S3 will include:

- A first day (get together) where students will meet each other, form
groups, and listen to short lessons. An assignment will be done to
students and links for a close interaction to mentors will be created
for the whole school and conference duration.

- Questions, competitions and awards (economic plus diploma prizes) will
be offered to the students who perform the best, granted at the end of
the summer school. We have up to 6 awards in different categories: come
and participate!

- Opportunities to attend a big number of high quality GECCO tutorials
plus continuous interaction to the summer school staff and mentors, what
will raise the abilities and vision of students: don't miss this.

- The first day after GECCO, students will discuss with mentors, so as
to finish their assignments. Also, the staff in S3 will evaluate during
this day the solution to the questions made the first day and offer, on
the very last day, the results and winners.

- The last day of the summer school (two days after GECCO) students will
present their assignments to the whole board of mentors. Enjoy this
boosting to your knowledge, your PhD thesis, and your networking to this
community!


STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO:

- Attend *ALL* the 1+2 days of S3, plus attending some tutorials and
sessions of GECCO 2017.

- Have a valid registration to GECCO itself, plus a small fee of 100
euros to participate in the school.

- Fulfill an assignment, participate in the school challenges, and
follow the standards of proper social and research behavior.


Students of the S3 will be eligible for travel, register and lodging
grants of GECCO.

Authors are invited to submit papers presenting original research in the conference topics, in electronic form (pdf format) via EasyChair.

Submissions must be unpublished, not under review for publication elsewhere, and provide sufficient information to judge their merits.

Submissions must be in English, and not exceed 12 pages, including the title page, in Springer's LNCS LaTeX style (instructions available here). Additional material, to be read at the discretion of reviewers and PC members, may be provided in a clearly marked appendix or by reference to a manuscript on a web site.

Accepted papers will be published in an LNCS volume by Springer. Instructions for formatting camera-ready versions will be communicated to the authors of accepted papers.

For an accepted paper to be included in the proceedings, one of the authors must commit to presenting the paper at the conference.

Additionally, selected papers will be invited to a special issue of Theory of Computing Systems and will be refereed according to the journal's procedure.

Submission and publication

Authors are invited to submit papers presenting original research in the conference topics, in electronic form (pdf format) via EasyChair.

Submissions must be unpublished, not under review for publication elsewhere, and provide sufficient information to judge their merits.

Submissions must be in English, and not exceed 12 pages, including the title page, in Springer's LNCS LaTeX style (instructions available here). Additional material, to be read at the discretion of reviewers and PC members, may be provided in a clearly marked appendix or by reference to a manuscript on a web site.

Accepted papers will be published in an LNCS volume by Springer. Instructions for formatting camera-ready versions will be communicated to the authors of accepted papers.

For an accepted paper to be included in the proceedings, one of the authors must commit to presenting the paper at the conference.

Additionally, selected papers will be invited to a special issue of Theory of Computing Systems and will be refereed according to the journal's procedure.

Call for Papers

Scaling up machine-learning (ML), data mining (DM) and reasoning algorithms
from Artificial Intelligence (AI) for massive datasets is a major technical
challenge in the times of "Big Data". The past ten years has seen the rise
of multi-core and GPU based computing. In parallel and distributed
computing, several frameworks such as OpenMP, OpenCL, and Spark continue to
appear to facilitate scaling up ML/DM/AI algorithms using higher levels of
abstraction. We invite novel works that advance the trio-fields of ML/DM/AI
through development of scalable algorithms or computing frameworks. Ideal
submissions would be characterized as scaling up X on Y, where potential
choices for X and Y are provided below.

[DMANET] PhD/MSc positions in Optimization at UBC

COCANA (Centre for Optimization Convex Analysis and Nonsmooth Analysis, https://ocana.ok.ubc.ca/) invites applications for PhD/MSc positions starting September 2017.

The positions will be based at the UBC Okanagan campus (http://ok.ubc.ca/). The PhD positions are fully funded for 4 years while the MSc positions are fully funded for 2 years (The MSc in Computer Science program mandate a minimum funding of $17,500/year.)

The first project is on road design optimization. The research is industry sponsored and include the opportunity to develop patents. Good programming skills (C/C++ preferred) are required, and optimization or operations research skills are desired.

The second project is on computational convex analysis and involves the creation of new algorithms to compute mathematical objects regularly used in convex analysis. The background required is in algorithms with good programming skills in high level languages (MATLAB, Scilab, or Octave), and a desire to learn convex analysis.

Historically students with a computer science background have been very successful in our program (and found positions at Google, Amazon, or Microsoft), as well as students with a mathematical background and strong programming skills.

ABOUT PARSOCIAL
Computational methods to represent, model and analyze problems using social
information have come a long way in the last decade. Computational methods,
such as social network analysis, have provided exciting insights into how
social information can be utilized to better understand social processes,
and model the evolution of social systems over time. We have also seen a
rapid proliferation of sensor technologies, such as smartphones and medical
sensors, for collecting a wide variety of social data, much of it in real
time. Meanwhile, the emergence of parallel architectures, in the form of
multi-core/many-core processors, and distributed platforms, such as
MapReduce, have provided new approaches for large-scale modeling and
simulation, and new tools for analysis. These two trends have dramatically
broadened the scope of computational social systems research, and are
enabling researchers to tackle new challenges. These challenges include
modeling of real world scenarios with dynamic and real-time data, and
formulating rigorous computational frameworks to embed social and
behavioral theories. The IEEE Workshop on Parallel and Distributed
Processing for Computational Social Systems (ParSocial) provides a platform
to bring together interdisciplinary researchers from areas, such as
computer science, social sciences, applied mathematics and computer
engineering, to showcase innovative research in computational social
systems that leverage the emerging trends in parallel and distributed
processing, computational modeling, and high performance computing.

The papers selected for ParSocial will be published in the workshop
proceedings. Proceedings of the workshops are distributed at the conference
and are submitted for inclusion in the IEEE Xplore Digital Library after
the conference.

Responsibilities

The recent Predictive Processing account in neuroscience postulates that the brain continuously predicts its future inputs, using generative models relating hypothesized causes to perceived effects. It entails that the brain actually implements some form of approximate Bayesian inference, combining prior expectations with newly arriving information to make sense of its inputs. Bayesian computations, however, are computationally intractable for situations of real-world complexity, even when approximated. This is in marked contrast to the efficiency of inference and learning as done by the brain in practice. The objective of this project is to resolve this paradox by studying the fundamental properties of approximate Bayesian inferences. The vital question we seek to answer is 'under what biologically plausible situational constraints can approximate Bayesian inference be rendered tractable?' The approach we use to address this question is the mathematical theory of parameterized complexity analysis, algorithm design, and computer simulation.

You will explore the boundaries between tractable and intractable (parameterized) sampling algorithms, contribute to the mathematical tools to assess such algorithms, and analyse the computations postulated in the Predictive Processing account. You will also contribute to our Artificial Intelligence educational programme, in particular by supervision of student projects and assistance in lab courses. In addition, you will be eligible to follow courses at the IPA and SIKS research schools. You will be part of the Donders Graduate School for Cognitive Neuroscience.

Work environment

The Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour focuses on state-of-the-art cognitive neuroscience, using a multidisciplinary approach, and offers excellent lab and neuroimaging facilities, PhD supervision and courses, and technical support.

The project is embedded in the Donders research theme "Perception, Action and Control" and will be supervised by Dr Johan Kwisthout. You will join the Computational Cognitive Science research group, headed by Dr Iris van Rooij, at the Donders Centre for Cognition (DCC). The DCC is part of the Faculty of Social Sciences, one of the largest faculties at Radboud University in Nijmegen. The institute offers excellent research facilities and study programmes that rank among the best in the Netherlands. The candidate will also maintain regular research contacts with the Algorithms and Complexity group, headed by Prof. Hans Bodlaender, at the Department of Information and Computing Sciences at Utrecht University.

[DMANET] Open PhD Position in the DFG priority program “Cyber-Physical,Networking (SPP 1914)

The Faculty of Computer Science at the University of Koblenz-Landau, Campus
Koblenz, Computer Networks Group, is inviting applications for a

PhD Position (research fellow)
(3 years, full time)

for working within the DFG priority program "Cyber-Physical Networking
(SPP 1914)". The position is to be filled as soon as possible, limited to 3
years and is subject to the German law on fixed-term contracts in science
(WissZeitVG). Salary will be according to the German public service salary
scale TV-L EGr. 13.


Topic:

The prospective research assistant will be responsible for the project
"analysis and synthesis of combined cooperative control and topology control
over wireless network models". This is a joint project between the Computer
Networks Group at the University of Koblenz-Landau and the Institute of
Control Systems at the Hamburg-Harburg Technical University. At both sites
one PhD student is supposed to work in this project context. The PhD student
employed at the University of Koblenz-Landau will research appropriate
adaptation of the time-varying wireless communication graph in multi-agent
systems. Such multi-agent systems are for example autonomous AUV or UAV
robot swarms. Of particular interest are topology control schemes to
maintain the highest level of algebraic connectivity (a condition for
performance and robustness of cooperative control) while reducing the number
of message losses due to interference (modeled in this project with the SINR
model). Focus is on distributed and local solutions with the goal to support
any system scale.
The effectiveness of the developed topology control schemes and their
interaction with distributed control will be evaluated by simulation studies
on some selected distributed control scenarios (e.g. distributed source
seeking based on robot swarms).

Many of the fastest known algorithms for factoring large integers rely
on finding subsequences of randomly generated sequences of integers
whose product is a perfect square. Motivated by this, at the 1994 ICM
Pomerance posed the problem of determining the threshold of the event
that a random sequence of /N/ integers, each chosen uniformly from the
set /{1,...,x}/, contains a subsequence, the product of whose elements
is a perfect square. In 1996, Pomerance gave good bounds on this
threshold and also conjectured that it is /sharp/.

A few years ago, in a major breakthrough, Croot, Granville, Pemantle and
Tetali significantly improved these bounds, and stated a conjecture as
to the location of this sharp threshold. In the talk we will discuss a
proof of their conjecture, which combines techniques from number theory
and probabilistic combinatorics. In particular, at the heart of the
proof lies a self-correcting random process of non-uniform hypergraphs.

Communication protocols and algorithms are needed to communicate network devices and exchange data between them. The appearance of new technologies usually comes with a protocol procedure and communication rules that allows data communication while taking profit of this new technology. Recent advances in hardware and communication mediums allow proposing new rules, conventions and data structures which could be used by network devices to communicate across the network. Moreover, devices with higher processing capacity let us include more complex algorithms that can be used by the network device to enhance the communication procedure.
Smart communication protocols and algorithms make use of several methods and techniques (such as machine learning techniques, decision making techniques, knowledge representation, network management, network optimization, problem solution techniques, and so on), to communicate the network devices to transfer data between them. They can be used to perceive the network conditions, or the user behavior, in order to dynamically plan, adapt, decide, take the appropriate actions, and learn from the consequences of its actions. The algorithms can make use of the information gathered from the protocol in order to sense the environment, plan actions according to the input, take consciousness of what is happening in the environment, and take the appropriate decisions using a reasoning engine. Goals such as decide which scenario fits best its end-to-end purpose, or environment prediction, can be achieved with smart protocols and algorithms. Moreover, they could learn from the pas!
t and use this knowledge to improve
future decisions.
In this workshop, researchers are encouraged to submit papers focused on the design, development, analysis or optimization of smart communication protocols or algorithms at any communication layer. Algorithms and protocols based on artificial intelligence techniques for network management, network monitoring, quality of service enhancement, performance optimization and network secure are included in the workshop.
We welcome technical papers presenting analytical research, simulations, practical results, position papers addressing the pros and cons of specific proposals, and papers addressing the key problems and solutions. The topics suggested by the conference can be discussed in term of concepts, state of the art, standards, deployments, implementations, running experiments and applications.

The main campus in Moscow is home to nearly 12,000 students where the CS program provides BS, MS and PhD degrees and the Coeur d'Alene campus provides upper division UG courseware for the BSCS as well as CS graduate degrees. Faculty will engage and teach graduate students, mentor graduate student research and demonstrate success in scholarly pursuits (funding, publications, and presentations) toward sustaining research program funding.

The CoEngr has received a $2.1M Idaho Global Entrepreneurial Mission (IGEM) grant to build educational and research capacity in Security Management of Cyber Physical Control Systems (CPCS). CPCS are the systems that underpin key sectors of our national economy, from our transportation network to our water supply to the fundamental elements of our power grid (e.g., SCADA and ICS). We seek candidates that can team with industry including Idaho National Laboratory (INL) and other universities (including Boise State University and Idaho State University) to develop products and build expertise to protect these vital systems including foster technology transfer/commercialization to strengthen and expand the workforce by delivering cyber security expertise to Idaho industry and improve the talent pipeline for computer science and engineering graduates. These faculty will become a members of the research Center for Secure and Dependable Systems (CSDS). We seek candidates with expertise in cybersecurity is sought for industrial control systems including embedded systems security, computer and network security, or digital forensics, reverse engineering hardware/software, malware analysis, specialized experience with power and energy systems, operations technology (OT).

Existing research centers of excellence include the Institute for Bioinformatics and Evolutionary Studies, National Institute for Advanced Transportation Technology, Center for Secure and Dependable Systems, Center for Modeling Complex Interactions and the Northwest Knowledge Network.
