[DMANET] Postdoc positions in TCS and/or combinatorial optimization at University of Copenhagen

The Department of Computer Science (DIKU) at the University of Copenhagen invites applications for postdoc positions in theoretical computer science and/or combinatorial optimization.

We are looking for outstanding junior researchers with an innovative mind-set and intellectual curiosity to strengthen and complement the research profile of the Mathematical Insights into Algorithms for Optimization (MIAO) group headed by Jakob Nordstrom (www.jakobnordstrom.se), which is active at both the University of Copenhagen and Lund University on either side of the Oresund Bridge.

The MIAO research group has a unique profile in that we are doing cutting-edge research both on the mathematical foundations of efficient computation and on state-of-the-art practical algorithms for real-world problems. This creates a very special environment, where we do not only conduct in-depth research on different theoretical and applied topics, but where different lines of research cross-fertilise each other and unexpected and exciting synergies often arise. Much of the activities of the group revolve around powerful algorithmic paradigms such as, e.g., Boolean satisfiability (SAT) solving, Groebner basis computations, integer linear programming, and constraint programming. This leads to classical questions in computational complexity theory—though often with new, fascinating twists—but also involves work on devising clever algorithms that can exploit the power of such paradigms in practice.

We are fortunate to be part of the Algorithms and Complexity Section at DIKU, which is world-leading in algorithms and complexity theory (currently ranked 6th worldwide by CSrankings.org). DIKU hosts the Basic Algorithms Research Copenhagen (BARC) centre joint with the IT University of Copenhagen, and we also have extensive collaborations with the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and with Lund University on the Swedish side of the Oresund Bridge, as well as with our many visitors. We aim to attract top talent from around the world to an ambitious, creative, collaborative, and fun environment. Using the power of mathematics, we strive to create fundamental breakthroughs in algorithms and complexity theory. While the focus in on foundational research, we do have a track record of surprising algorithmic discoveries leading to major industrial applications.

These postdoc positions are full-time research positions for a duration of two years. Teaching of advanced courses is encouraged but not required. Travel funding is included, and we also expect to start receiving visitors again on a regular basis as the pandemic situation is now improving. The starting date would ideally be in not-too-late autumn 2022 but is flexible.

The University of Copenhagen is currently expanding strongly in computer science. We expect to have tenure-track openings in in the coming years, and welcome postdoctoral researchers interested in exploring such opportunities.

The application deadline is June 29, 2022. See http://www.jakobnordstrom.se/openings/Postdoc-UCPH-220629.html for the full announcement with more information and instructions for how to apply. Informal enquiries are welcome and may be sent to jakob.nordstrom@cs.lth.se.

[DMANET] PhD positions in TCS and/or combinatorial optimization in Copenhagen

The Department of Computer Science (DIKU) at the University of Copenhagen invites applications for PhD positions in theoretical computer science and/or combinatorial optimization.

The PhD students will be working in the Mathematical Insights into Algorithms for Optimization (MIAO) group headed by Jakob Nordstrom (www.jakobnordstrom.se), which is active at both the University of Copenhagen and Lund University on either side of the Oresund Bridge.

We currently have openings for both theoretically and practically inclined PhD students. There is a lot of flexibility as to what kind of research the PhD students will pursue, and all candidates are welcome, both those who want to go deep into either theory or practice and those who are inspired by the challenge of bridging the gap between the two.

These positions are available for period of 3-5 years, depending on the current education level of the applicant. All PhD positions in the research group are fully funded, employed positions (including travel money) that come with an internationally competitive salary. The starting date is negotiable but should ideally be in not-too-late autumn 2022.

The application deadline is June 29. Please see http://www.jakobnordstrom.se/openings/PhD-UCPH-220629.html for the full announcement with more information and instructions for how to apply. Informal enquiries are welcome and may be sent to jn@di.ku.dk.

[DMANET] [Scheduling seminar] Patrick De Causmaecker (KU Leuven) | May 11 | Data Science Meets Scheduling

Dear scheduling researcher,

We are delighted to announce the talk given by Patrick De Causmaecker
(KU Leuven).
The title is "Data Science Meets Scheduling".

The seminar will take place on Zoom on Wednesday, May 11 at 13:00 UTC.
Join Zoom Meeting
https://cesnet.zoom.us/j/99017304143?pwd=N2VaLzlWT2FWTlFaamNQWkV1N2UrZz09
Meeting ID: 990 1730 4143
Passcode: 922592

You can follow the seminar online or offline on our Youtube channel as well:
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCUoCNnaAfw5NAntItILFn4A

The abstract follows.
The impact of techniques from data science and machine learning on
scheduling is investigated. We review a number of recently emerged
applications of these techniques that can shed a new light on
combinatorial optimization in general. We give concrete examples for
scheduling in particular. We distinguish on-line techniques, that is,
data science techniques integrated into advanced algorithms, off-line
techniques which can be used to improve, select of construct algorithms
as well as techniques that consider the problem as living in a space of
which the dimensions are set by specific properties of its instances. We
give examples of recent results obtained for specific problems in the
scheduling domain. Meeting works in two directions. We give an example
where a recent theoretical result for a combinatorial optimization
problem provides new insights in the structures on which the data
science techniques can operate. In this case, the theoretical result
allowed to locate a region of hard problem instances in the instance space.

The next talk in our series will be given by:
Stanislaw Gawiejnowicz (AMU Poznañ) | May 25 | Past, present and future
of time-dependent scheduling

[DMANET] Special Issue on Modeling and Performance Evaluation of Wireless Ad-Hoc Networks

*Elsevier Ad Hoc Networks Journal*

https://www.sciencedirect.com/journal/ad-hoc-networks/about/call-for-papers#special-issue-on-modeling-and-performance-evaluation-of-wireless-ad-hoc-networks

*Manuscript submission information:*

A primary aim of wireless ad-hoc networks is to deliver data in areas where
there is no pre-defined infrastructure. In these networks, the users, but
also the network entities can be potentially mobile. Wireless ad-hoc
networks have recently witnessed their fastest growth period ever in
history. Real wireless ad-hoc networks are now implemented, deployed and
tested, and this trend is likely to increase in the future. However, as
such networks are increasingly complex, performance modeling and evaluation
play a crucial part in their design process to ensure their successful
deployment and exploitation in practice.

This special issue on Modeling, Analysis and Performance evaluation of
Wireless Ad-Hoc Networks era aims to open a new critical debate on the
evaluation of wireless ad-hoc networks. In particular, we seek original
theoretical and/or practical contributions, from researchers and
practitioners that identify and address issues in evaluating wireless
ad-hoc networks.

*Topics of Interest *In particular, the topics of interest include, but are
not limited to:

- *Modeling*
- Analytical modeling and simulation methods
- Probabilistic models for ad hoc, sensor and ubiquitous networks

Objectives
----------

Logics and strategic reasoning play a central role in multi-agent systems.
Logics can be used, for instance, to express the agents' abilities,
knowledge,
and objectives. Strategic reasoning refers to algorithmic methods that
allow for
developing good behaviour for the agents of the system. At the
intersection, we
find logics that can express existence of strategies or equilibria, and can
be
used to reason about them.

The LAMAS&SR workshop merges two international workshops: LAMAS (Logical
Aspects
of Multi-Agent Systems), which focuses on all kinds of logical aspects of
multi-agent systems from the perspectives of artificial intelligence,
computer
science, and game theory, and SR (Strategic Reasoning), devoted to all
aspects
of strategic reasoning in formal methods and artificial intelligence.

List of Topics
--------------

The topics covered by the workshop include, but are not limited to:

* Logical systems for specification, analysis, and reasoning about
multi-agent systems

**About HIS 2022**
------------------

Hybridization of intelligent systems is a promising research field of
modern
artificial/computational intelligence concerned with the development of
the next generations of intelligent systems. A fundamental stimulus to
Hybrid Intelligent Systems (HIS) investigations is the awareness in the
academic communities about the necessity of the combined approaches to
solving the remaining challenging problems in artificial/computational
intelligence. Hybrid Intelligent Systems are recently getting popular
due to their capabilities in handling several real-world complexities
involving imprecision, uncertainty, and vagueness. HIS'22 built on the
success of the previous HIS conferences. HIS'22 is the 22nd
International conference that brings together researchers, developers,
practitioners, and users of soft computing, computational intelligence,
agents, logic programming, and several other intelligent computing
techniques. It aims to increase the awareness of the research community
about the broad spectrum of hybrid approaches. It brings together
worldwide AI researchers to present their cutting-edge results, discuss
the current trends in HIS research, and develop a collective vision of
future opportunities. Thereby helping the researchers and practitioners
