[DMANET] [Scheduling seminar] Nicole Megow (Universität Bremen) | June 8 | Learning-Augmented Online Algorithms for Scheduling and Routing

Dear scheduling researcher,

We are delighted to announce the talk given by Nicole Megow (Universität
Bremen).
The title is "Learning-Augmented Online Algorithms for Scheduling and
Routing".

The seminar will take place on Zoom on Wednesday, June 8 at 13:00 UTC.
Join Zoom Meeting
https://cesnet.zoom.us/j/93281103550?pwd=ckU0dWRRYWFUb2tRV2duakRjMVgyZz09
Meeting ID: 932 8110 3550
Passcode: 197150

You can follow the seminar online or offline on our Youtube channel as well:
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCUoCNnaAfw5NAntItILFn4A

The abstract follows.
Online optimization refers to solving problems where an initially
unknown input is revealed incrementally, and irrevocable decisions must
be made not knowing future requests. The assumption of not having any
prior knowledge about future requests seems overly pessimistic. Given
the success of machine-learning methods and data-driven applications,
one may expect to have access to predictions about future requests.
However, simply trusting them might lead to very poor solutions, as
these predictions come with no quality guarantee. In this talk we
present recent developments in the young line of research that
integrates such error-prone predictions into algorithm design to break
through worst case barriers. We discuss different prediction models and
algorithmic challenges with a focus on online scheduling and routing and
give an outlook to network design problems.

The next talk in our series will be given by:
Maurice Queyranne (Sauder School, UBC)| June 22 | On Polyhedral
Approaches to Scheduling Problems

[DMANET] Ph.D. and PostDoc positions in Algorithms at IDSIA, USI-SUPSI, Switzerland

Ph.D. and PostDoc positions in Algorithms at IDSIA, USI-SUPSI, Switzerland,
deadline 3rd July 2022

The Algorithms and Complexity Group of IDSIA, USI-SUPSI, Lugano
(Switzerland), opens 2 Ph.D. positions and some PostDoc positions. These
positions are supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation project
"Ideal Membership Problems and the Bit Complexity of Sum of Squares Proofs"
(November 2022-October 2026).

The project is on the interface of three very active areas of research in
theoretical computer science and mathematics. The first one deals with
polynomial ideals and their properties and goes all the way back to David
Hilbert. The second one is a widely used tool in complexity, algebraic and
semi-algebraic proof systems such as Sum-of-Squares (SoS), where the main
question is when a proof of a certain property of a polynomial can be
efficiently found. The third area is the analysis of the complexity of
constraint satisfaction problems (CSPs), mainly through the
universal-algebraic approach. These areas address key problems in
theoretical computer science, they produce a very significant amount of
world class research, with many publications in world-leading venues in
theoretical computer science. The proposed project is about a new direction
of research combining these three areas mentioned above. This new direction
of research was recently initiated by the PI of this project in a series of
publications and followed up by other works by world-leading experts on
universal-algebraic methods in CSPs. The new direction proposes to combine
two widely used methodologies in a new way, with an algebraic geometry view
used to bring them together. This new combination opens up a whole range of
new very interesting problems.

The Ph.D. positions are for 2+2 years, and they are supposed to start on
November 1st 2022 with moderate flexibility. The gross salary is around
50.000 CHF per year, with low taxes. The position involves a moderate
teaching load (as teaching assistant) at USI. There is travel support.
Candidates should hold (or be close to obtaining) a Master Degree in
Computer Science or related areas. A solid background in Algorithms,
Computational Complexity, Discrete Mathematics, Mathematical Programming is
helpful. A good knowledge of written and spoken English is also required
(while knowledge of Italian is not needed).

The PostDoc positions are initially for 1 year, but an extension by 1 extra
year is expected (further extensions are possible in exceptional cases).
The project supports 1 PostDoc position per year on average. The gross
salary is around 80.000 CHF per year, with low taxes. There are no teaching
duties and there is travel support. Candidates should hold (or be close to
obtaining) a Ph.D. in Computer Science or related areas and should have a
solid publication record and a solid background in at least one of the
areas mentioned above.

IDSIA offers an international working environment. Lugano is a tidy and
lively town, with a wonderful view on Ceresio lake and mountains around.
Ticino Canton offers many opportunities for hiking, biking, skiing, etc.
Local restaurants serve very good food.

For full consideration, Ph.D. and Postdoc applications should be sent
within 3rd July 2022. Further PostDoc applications can be sent at any time
during the first 3 years of the project.
The interested candidates should email a detailed CV and contact details of
2-3 references to Prof. Monaldo Mastrolilli and fill out a form on the web
(contact Prof. Monaldo Mastrolilli for details).

*Title*: Norms in action

*Abstract*: I will provide an introduction to STIT logic, or logic of
"seeing to it that", and show how it can be applied to the formalization of
a rich variety of legal and social notions including obligations and
permissions, social influence and responsibility. I will put special
emphasis on the temporal STIT framework, the variant of STIT combining
modal operators for agency, representing the consequences of an agent's
choice, with temporal operators of linear temporal logic. I will focus on
both the axiomatics and complexity aspects of the temporal STIT (T-STIT)
framework. Moreover, I will introduce different semantics for T-STIT based
on concurrent game structures, interpreted systems and temporal Kripke STIT
models. I will present a number of equivalence and non-equivalence results
between these semantics relative to the T-STIT language and some of its
fragments.

===============
Important Dates
===============

Paper submission deadline: July 7, 2022, 11:59pm Pacific Time

Author notification: before September 7, 2022

=================
Submission Server
=================
Easychair submission link:
https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=wine2022

=================
Submission Format
=================

Authors are invited to submit extended abstracts presenting original research on any of the research fields related to WINE 2022.

An extended abstract submitted to WINE 2022 should start with the title of the paper, each author's name, affiliation and e-mail address, followed by a one-paragraph summary of the results to be presented. This should then be followed by a technical exposition of the main ideas and techniques used to achieve these results, including motivation and a clear comparison with related work.

The extended abstract should not exceed 18 single-spaced pages (including references) using reasonable margins (at least one-inch margins all around) and at least 11-point font. If the authors believe that more details are essential to substantiate the claims of the paper, they may include a clearly marked appendix (with no space limit) that will be read at the discretion of the Program Committee. It is strongly recommended that submissions adhere to the specified format and length.
Submissions that are clearly too long may be rejected immediately. The above specifications are meant to provide more freedom to the authors at the time of submission. Note that accepted papers will be allocated 18 pages (including references) in the LNCS format in the proceedings (see below).

The proceedings of the conference will be published by Springer-Verlag in the ARCoSS/LNCS series, and will be available for distribution at the conference. Accepted papers will be allocated 18 pages total in the LNCS format in the proceedings. Submissions are encouraged, though not required, to follow the LNCS format (Latex, Word). More information about the LNCS format can be found on the author instructions page of Springer-Verlag (https://www.springer.com/cn/computer-science/lncs/conference-proceedings-guidelines).

Questions regarding the submissions can be directed to the PC chairs via wine2022chairs@gmail.com.

===========================
Conflict of Interest Policy
===========================

A conflict of interest (COI) is limited to the following categories:
1. Family member or close friend.
2. Ph.D. advisor or advisee (no time limit), or postdoctoral or undergraduate mentor or mentee within the past five years.
3. Person with the same affiliation (department, not institute).
4. Involved in an alleged incident of harassment (it is not required that the incident be reported).
5. Reviewer owes author a favor (e.g., recently requested a reference letter).
6. Frequent or recent collaborator whom you believe cannot objectively review your work.

Declaring COIs prevents the specified person from reviewing a paper, thereby constraining the matching process and so potentially negatively impacting review quality. For this reason, COIs should not be declared automatically based on a prior relationship (e.g., coauthor, friend, colleague in a different department at the same institution, etc.). Authors can contact the PC chairs directly if they have a conflict with an individual who is likely to be asked to serve as a subreviewer for the paper.

Even though EasyChair asks the authors to specify the type of conflict of interest when they declare one, the authors do *not* need to answer that question. They may avoid answering it by choosing the option "Others".

================
Best Paper Award
================

The program committee will decide upon a best paper award and a best student paper award.

================
Important Notice
================

To accommodate the publishing traditions of different fields, authors of accepted papers can ask that only a one-page abstract of the paper appear in the proceedings, along with a URL pointing to the full paper.
The authors should guarantee the link to be reliable for at least two years. This option is available to accommodate subsequent publication in journals that would not consider results that have been published in preliminary form in conference proceedings. Such papers must be submitted and formatted just like papers submitted for full-text publication.

Simultaneous submission of results to another conference with published proceedings is not allowed. Results previously published or presented at another archival conference prior to WINE 2022, or published (or accepted for publication) at a journal prior to the submission deadline of WINE 2022, will not be considered. Simultaneous submission of results to a journal is allowed only if the authors intend to publish the paper as a one-page abstract in WINE 2022. Papers that are accepted and appear as a one-page abstract can be subsequently submitted for publication in a journal but may not be submitted to any other conference that has a published proceeding.

==================
Forward to Journal
==================

A forward to journal program is initiated at WINE 2022. Please see the conference homepage for further and updated information.

[DMANET] online resources --- Operational Research (OR) for Developing Countries --- responsibility, creativity, optimization (by IFORS)

The aim of the IFORS ( International Federation of Operational Research Societies) Developing Countries Online Resources page is to offer the OR worker all publicly-available materials on the topic of OR for Development. It also aims to provide a venue for people who are working in the area to share their completed or in-process work, learn from others, and stimulate comments and discussions on the work. Regarding IFORS Developing Countries OR resources website, its regular updates - and your possible submission of "free" (not copyright protected) material, you might occasionally visit

[ http://ifors.org/developing_countries/index.php?title=Main_Page ]

With this open resources page we aim to make research and application results better accessible to the many friends in the Developing Countries (DCs). We would be glad about interest.

Contributions from art and science, communication and education sectors are warmly welcome by our community which has very little access to emerging documents on arts and sciences, research, design and development. Particularly, the disciplines and areas MRI and Physics could serve the DCs very well.

The International Federation of Operational Research Societies (IFORS; http://ifors.org/) is an almost 60-year old organization which is currently composed of 51 national societies. Regional Groups of IFORS are: ALIO (The Latin American Ibero Association on Operations Research), APORS (The Association of Asian-Pacific Operational Research Societies), EURO (The Association of European Operational Research Societies), NORAM (The Association of North American Operations Research Societies). IFORS conferences are taking place every three years. On successfully celebrated IFORS 2021, Seoul, South Korea, August 22-27, 2021, please refer to http://www.ifors2020.kr/.

Thank you very much for your attention.
