Think Opportunity
We seek a talented mathematician / operations researcher or scientist
with a demonstrated ability to develop and apply sophisticated
computational, algorithmic and analytical techniques to solving problems
in mine planning, production and logistics optimisation to join our
Optimisation R&D team based at Melbourne University. In this unique
position, you will have the opportunity to contribute across a wide
range of mathematical modelling initiatives to support business
planning, valuation, and production optimisation across our minerals
businesses. As part of your broader career development, you will also
have the opportunity to collaborate and work with professionals from
sites across the company's global operations.

Think Purpose
Working in a team environment, the successful candidate will be
instrumental in scoping and developing cutting-edge mathematical
solutions and software tools to assist decision making and for value
creation in strategic resources & production planning in our mining,
processing and materials handling operations. The successful candidate
will also contribute to the identification of emerging technologies &
discontinuities which have the potential to impact present and future
business.

Think Requirements
Applicants will preferably hold a PhD in Mathematics, Operations
Research or related Science or Engineering fields along with significant
experience in research and development. Experience with implementing
advanced mixed-integer optimisation solutions, and strong competence in
C++ / C# programming are requirements. Applicants with
cross-disciplinary experience are particularly welcome to apply. Your
advanced vocational, analytical and organisational skills will be
complemented by a demonstrated competency in written & verbal
communication. You will also have the ability to present sophisticated
technical solutions and concepts in a clear and simple manner to a
non-expert audience. Preferably, you will demonstrate vocational skills
in system modelling and/or asset valuation and have an understanding of
real options valuation technologies. Exposure to operations in the
mining or petroleum industry will be viewed favourably. Your background
should testify to your technical initiative, drive and leadership,
evidencing a responsible and proactive approach to safety and the
ability to prosper in a close team environment.

Employment Conditions
An attractive remuneration package, commensurate with your
qualifications and experience, will apply. The position is Melbourne
based at BHP Billiton's office in the Department of Mathematics and
Statistics at the University of Melbourne. Regular travel will be
required at times in order to consult with operations staff and to
implement technology solutions.
