research project "Learning Extremal Structures in Combinatorics". The
successful candidate will work on the interface of Extremal
Combinatorics and Machine Learning. The project will be conducted in
close collaboration between the IOL Group (https://iol.zib.de ) of the
Zuse Institute Berlin (ZIB) and the Combinatorics and Graph Theory group
of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at the Freie
Universität Berlin
(http://www.mi.fu-berlin.de/en/math/groups/geokomb/index.html ), with
the position being integrated in the latter.
The position can be filled either on the postdoctoral or the PhD-student
level. The intended project start is April 2021 but a later start may
also be possible.
Deadline for applications: *February 1.*
Requirements:
- Master degree in Mathematics or related field.
Desirable:
- strong background in Combinatorics and Graph Theory
- experience with algorithms and enthusiasm for implementation (advanced
programming skills in Python and/or related programming languages)
- very good written and spoken English
Qualified candidates are asked to submit a short cover letter outlining
professional background, a detailed CV, list of publications (for
postdoc candidates), and arrange three letters of recommendation to be
sent by the reference writers in case applying for a postdoc position
and two letters in case of applying for a PhD-studentship. Please
include the reference code MATH+_2021_EF1-12 in the subject line when
applying via Email and provide your documents in one PDF document, if
possible.
All applications should be directed preferably electronically in one
PDF-file to: Tibor Szabó (c/o Sabrina Nordt: nordt@math.fu-berlin.de) or
postal to

MATH+, the Berlin Mathematics Research Center (www.mathplus.de), is a
cross-institutional and transdisciplinary Cluster of Excellence of the
three Berlin universities. It sets out to advance mathematics and its
interdisciplinary power with the aim of achieving progress on grand
challenges in a wide variety of application fields. The Combinatorics
and Graph Theory group at Freie Universität Berlin
(http://www.mi.fu-berlin.de/en/math/groups/geokomb/index.html ) consists
of researchers from mathematics with expertise in different aspects of
extremal and probabilistic combinatorics and graph theory. The IOL Group
(https://iol.zib.de ) is situated at the intersection of Machine
Learning and Optimization.
