Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are nowadays used in a wide variety of applications, such as military surveillance, scientific exploration, structural monitoring, and environmental monitoring applications, among others. These sorts of networks are complex systems whose correct operation mainly depends on the integration of physical sensors, computation processes, and communication between devices. Advances in smart device and sensor networks will drive innovation in important sectors such as energy efficiency, city/building design, healthcare, agriculture, transportation, and manufacturing.

Moreover, human actions motivated by achieving various purposes cause side effects on our environment. While the intended effects are usually positive, at least for those who promote action, side effects can be positive but very often are negative. Some most basic actions of how we do our day-to-day routines are the following: the way people move around the city, how people get rid of your waste, excessive cultivation or exploitation of natural resources, misuse of electrical appliances, or celebrating holidays with music and pyrotechnics, among others, which can have a significant impact on our environment, whether natural, social environments, or on our heritage.

For these reasons and taking into account the advantages that WSNs offer, this special issue aims to focus on new proposals and developments of WSNs for monitoring and evaluating the impact of human activity on the environments that surround us. Authors are invited to submit their original and unpublished research contributions to this special issue in relevant areas of WSNs, proposing new design concepts, architectures, and applications versus resource constraints and energy conservation.

Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

- WSN issues and technologies for monitoring the effects of human behaviors on the environment
- Design of energy-efficient WSNs, hardware, software, and systems for monitoring sensitive environments
- Real-world case studies of WSNs where the effects of human behaviors are analyzed
- WSNs data management
- Prototyping of experimental WSNs and its test bench
- Evaluation of WSNs in sensitive scenarios
- WSNs for emergency response in natural/man-made disasters
- New proposals of WSNs architectures
- Efficient communication for WSNs architectures
- WSN for sustainable human behaviors
- Sustainable WSN for environmental sustainability

The Information Sciences group at the Los Alamos National Laboratory has an opening at a postdoctoral level. The research will involve elements of mathematical optimization, algorithm design, and software engineering. It will be a part of two multi-year projects in the area of modeling and optimization for novel computer architectures.

Candidates are expected to have strong analytical and programming skills. Experience in parallel computing will be a plus. This is a long-term appointment (up to three years), so candidates who can commit to a longer time frame will be preferred. However, candidates available for shorter periods may be considered for internships.

Qualifications:

(1) A PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Mathematics;

(2) Research-level expertise in at least one of the following: combinatorial algorithm design, parallel computing, discrete optimization, machine learning, bioinformatics;

(3) Very strong programming skills;

(4) Demonstrated ability to publish research in peer-reviewed journals or conference proceedings.

Prof. Kay Hamacher's working group invites applicants for a Research
position
in the area of privacy-preserving protocols and cryptography.

The position is initially available for 2,5 years and will be located
within the EC SPRIDE research center http://www.ec-spride.tu-darmstadt.de
The availability of the position is subject to the final agreement to
provide funding by the BMBF.

The research covers aspects of the design and analysis of
privacy-preserving protocols, private information retrieval, and/or
homomorphic encryption well suited for genetic and physiological data.

Ideally you have already gained experience in one or more of the
following areas:

* Cryptography
* techn. privacy protection, especially protocol design
* Biostatistics

Proficiency in spoken and written English is mandatory

The start date is October, 1st 2015 or as soon a possible. The research
will qualify you to obtain a Ph.D. degree in either computer science or
bioinformatics (depending on your previous studies and degrees). The
position could also be filled as a PostDoc.

The fulfillment of the research and service requirements attached to
this position serve at the same time as fulfillment of the academic
requirements for a candidate's doctoral degree.

The Technische Universität Darmstadt intends to increase the number of

Diagrams is an international interdisciplinary conference series, covering all aspects of research on the theory and application of diagrams. In 2016 it will be held near Philadelphia at the ACE Conference Center in Lafayette, Pennsylvania, USA. Diagrams 2016 will run from 7th of August 2016 to the 10th of August 2016. It will be co-located with Spatial Cognition 2016<http://sites.temple.edu/sc16/> (2-5 August) and Cognitive Science 2016<http://cognitivesciencesociety.org/conference_future.html> (10-13 August).

Diagrams is the only conference series that provides a united forum for all areas that are concerned with the study of diagrams, including architecture, artificial intelligence, biology, cartography, cognitive science, computer science, education, graphic design, history of science, human-computer interaction, linguistics, logic, mathematics, philosophy, psychology, and software modelling. The conference attracts a large number of researchers from almost all these related fields, positioning Diagrams as the major international event in the area. Diagrams 2016 is the ninth conference in the bi-annual series that started in 2000.

Diagrams 2016 will include presentations of refereed papers, posters, tutorials, workshop sessions, and a graduate symposium. We invite submissions that focus on any aspect of diagrams research, as follows:

The International Symposium on Artificial Intelligence and Mathematics (ISAIM) is a biennial meeting that fosters interactions between mathematics, theoretical computer science, and artificial intelligence. ISAIM 2016 is the fourteenth Symposium in the series, which is sponsored by the journal Annals of Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence and by Florida Atlantic University.

We seek submissions of recent results, with a particular emphasis on the foundations of AI and mathematical methods used in AI. Papers describing applications are also encouraged, but the focus should be on principled lessons learned from the development of the application. Traditionally, the Symposium attracts participants from a variety of disciplines, thereby providing a unique forum for scientific exchange. The three-day Symposium includes invited speakers, presentations of technical papers, and special topic sessions.

Work that has already been published as of the ISAIM submission deadline should not be submitted to ISAIM unless it introduces a significant addition to the previously published work. However, the ISAIM web site proceedings are not archival, so papers submitted to ISAIM can be under review at the time of submission and can be submitted elsewhere after ISAIM.

Authors of a selected set of papers from the Symposium will be invited to submit full versions of their papers for inclusion in a special volume of the Annals of Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence, published by Springer. Those invited submissions will be subject to refereeing at the usual standards of the journal, and authors will receive more details with the acceptance notice. Papers must of course be new and unpublished to be considered for the special volume.

Papers should be submitted in PDF and formatted in AAAI format, removing the AAAI copyright note.

[DMANET] Compressed Data Structures session at DCC 2016

Dear Colleague,

The deadline for the 2016 *Data Compression Conference* (DCC) is now less
than a month away. We remind you that the conference will include a
special session on *Compressed Data Structures*, and encourage you to
submit new results you may have on this topic.

The session will be an opportunity for members of our community to confer
with each other and reinforce our topic's relevance to the wider field of
data compression. If we receive sufficiently many high-quality papers, we
will try to arrange a special issue in an appropriate journal for
substantially extended versions of papers from the session.

Papers are due by *November 2nd*, 2015 (23:59 PST) and the conference will
take place from March 29th to April 1st, 2016, in Snowbird, Utah (a premier
ski resort in the Rocky Mountains). The DCC submission process (see
http://www.cs.brandeis.edu/~dcc/Call.html) will allow authors to direct
their papers to the special session, but submissions are otherwise handled
in the same way, will be subject to the same review process and, if
accepted, will be included in the same proceedings.

Objective

Security and privacy are important aspects of computer and communications
systems. With the advent of IoT and big data, analytics has become very
important. The workshop stands at the confluence of security and privacy
and data analytics. This workshop provides a forum for presentations of
papers on these and related topics. Different from main conference, this
workshop can be a platform to report results with shorter turn-around time
and work in progress. In particular, students can present their papers in
the workshop while attending the main conference.

There are two goals of the workshop: Privacy-preserving analytics and
analytics for security. With the growing focus on big data and Internet of
Things (IoT), analytics has become all the more important. A lot of
information is being collected and analyzed, such as health-care data, data
from social networks. These data are sensitive and needs to be protected
from intrusion and misuse. Data is often stored in untrusted cloud servers.
Users want to be sure that their data is not leaked or used elsewhere
inappropriately. Privacy and analytics seem to be contradictory goals
unless done in a systematic way. Privacy-preserving analytics is what is
desired. Fortunately, in recent years there has been a thrust on this area
and a number of tools and techniques have been developed. K-anonymity,
Differential privacy are being widely studied. Secure and privacy
preserving computations on untrusted servers are active areas of research.

The other focus of this workshop is to use analytics for security.
Cybersecurity is a challenging and important area of research. Threats have
multiplied and have become more complex in the last few years. Security
breaches have been reported on many financial networks, social networks and
defence systems. Detection of malware, anomaly detection, network traffic
analysis, fraud detection, graph-based user behavior modeling and profiling
has become ever more important to protect individuals and companies.
Machine learning and analytics are essential tools for many of these
security problems.

The aim of this workshop is to discuss about the synergy between analytics,
security and privacy. STPA 2016 is an international forum for researchers,
developers, and practitioners to demonstrate new ideas, techniques, and
tools on security and privacy-preserving analytics and analytics for
security. The workshop welcomes academia, government, industry, and
contributing individuals to submit unpublished papers in theoretical and
practical aspects of security, privacy and analytics.

Contribution Format

Authors are invited to submit original and unpublished papers to the
workshop featuring a comprehensive technical program. All paper submissions
must follow the IEEE Manuscript Templates for Conference Proceedings and in
8.5" x 11" Two-Column Format. Each submission can have at most 6 pages.
Authors of accepted papers must sign an IEEE copyright release form and
present their paper at the workshop. The Proceedings of the workshop will
be published by the IEEE Communication Society as part of the IEEE Xplore
Digital Library and distributed at AINA 2016.

SCOPE

The range of topics within the scope of the workshop on algorithms and

AUTHOR INSTRUCTIONS

Authors are invited to submit papers (extended abstracts) describing
original research of theoretical or practical significance to
algorithms and computation. Papers should not exceed 12 pages in LNCS
style.
Papers significantly shorter than 12 pages are also welcome. If the
authors feel that more details are essential to substantiate the main
claim of the paper, they may include a clearly marked appendix that
will be read at the discretion of the Program Committee. Only
electronic submission will be allowed. Submitted papers must
describe work not previously published. They must not be submitted
simultaneously to another conference with refereed proceedings or to a
journal.

PROCEEDINGS

Accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings which
will be included in the Springer- Verlag LNCS series. Selected papers
will be published in special issues of TCS and JGAA.

VENUE

The workshop will be held at the Asian Institute of Technology and
Management, Khumaltar Height, Lalitpur, Nepal.

[DMANET] Professor/Associate Professor positions in AI/multi-agent systems at University of Southampton

Two senior positions as professor or associate professor are available at the Agents Interaction Complexity (AIC) research group, Electronics and Computer Science (ECS), the University of Southampton.

In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, ECS was first in the UK for the volume and quality of research in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. The volume and quality of ECS Computer Science research is in the top 10 in the UK, with 100% of Computer Science research impact rated as world-leading or internationally excellent.

The appointments will be in the AIC group. We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in autonomous systems, artificial intelligence, multi-agent systems, interaction, and the internet-of-things. However, we will consider outstanding candidates across the full range of the group's activities. AIC currently has 60 staff and students who undertake world-leading, cross-disciplinary research in socio-technical systems and their applications.

The department is looking for research leaders who will build up a team that complements existing activity, lead on quality scientific outputs, deliver significant societal impact and contribute to the educational agenda. Scope

Combinatorial optimization problems model most of the application scenarios
frequently arising in practice. Unfortunately, optimal solutions to these
problems are hard to obtain, with most of them having high computational
complexity. Even in the case of problems admitting polynomial time
solutions, e.g., the classical shortest path problem, the relevant
applications should now work on very large input instances or should cope
with a large number of concurrent users. Thus, faster solution methods are
clearly needed for achieving real time responses for problems previously
considered as easy ones. The same also holds for most heuristic methods or
approximation algorithms that have been proposed for obtaining approximate
solutions for hard optimization problems in acceptable execution times. For
large-scale problems, these techniques are inadequate, and much faster
algorithmic techniques are needed again.

Due to the aforementioned limitations, parallelism has been considered a
means of deriving faster algorithmic solutions. Parallel computation is
virtually ubiquitous nowadays and can be found in all modern computing
platforms. Although the concept of parallel execution is simple, its
application on combinatorial optimization problems is not straightforward,
due to the inherently irregular control flow that the algorithms for this
kind of problem commonly have. In this Special Issue, we solicit
contributions that will propose new methodologies for solving problems in
combinatorial optimization using parallel computation, either in
shared-memory systems (e.g., multi-core/many-core processors, GPUs, etc.) or
in distributed-memory systems (e.g., clusters, cloud architectures, etc.).
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

- Parallel exact algorithms: e.g., divide-and-conquer, dynamic programming,
etc.

- Parallel approximation algorithms- Parallel fixed parameter algorithms

- Parallel heuristics/metaheuristics for combinatorial optimization
problems: e.g., local search, simulated annealing, evolutionary computation,
swarm intelligence computation, etc.

- Parallel techniques in integer linear programming: e.g., parallelization
of branch-and-bound, column generation, and cutting plane methods or their
combinations (i.e., branch-and-cut or branch-and-price).

- Parallel algorithms for multi-objective optimization problems.

[DMANET] Winter School in Network Optimization , January 2016 - 3rd Announcement

The 5th edition of the Winter School on Network Optimization will take place at the Hotel Sana, Estoril, from the 11th to the 15th of January 2016. Its main objective is to provide an opportunity for PhD students to get together and attend high level courses in the field of Network Optimization. Non-PhD students are welcome to attend the school, but the number of participants is limited and priority will be given to PhD students. In this edition of the school, the lecturers and subjects to be addressed are:

Recently, CIO has been merged with the Centro de Matemática e Aplicações Fundamentais (CMAF). The event will become part of the activities of the new CMAF+CIO and is also endorsed by the EURO (the Association of European Societies)
and APDIO (the Portuguese OR society).

Conference on Integer Programming and Combinatorial Optimization
IPCO XVIII, June 1–3, 2016

The IPCO conference is a forum for researchers and practitioners working on various aspects of integer programming and combinatorial optimization. The aim is to present recent developments in theory, computation, and applications. The scope of IPCO is viewed in a broad sense, to include algorithmic and structural results in integer programming and combinatorial optimization as well as revealing computational studies and novel applications of discrete optimization to practical problems.

Authors are invited to submit extended abstracts of their recent work by November 20, 2015 (23:59 CET); see the submission guidelines for more information. The Program Committee will select the papers to be presented on the basis of the submitted extended abstracts. Contributions are expected to be original, unpublished and not submitted to journals or conferences with proceedings before the notification date (January 31, 2016). Papers violating these requirements will not be considered by the Program Committee.

During the conference, approximately 33 papers will be presented in single-track sessions. Each lecture will be 30 minutes long. The proceedings will be published as a volume of Springer Lecture Notes in Computer Science. They will contain extended abstracts of all accepted submissions. Each participant will receive a copy of the proceedings at the conference. It is expected that revised and extended versions will subsequently be submitted for publication in appropriate journals.

The 29th Conference of the European Chapter on Combinatorial Optimization will be jointly organized by the Institute of Computer Science and Control of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and the Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest, Hungary on May 26 - 28, 2016. ECCO (European Chapter on Combinatorial Optimization) is a working group of EURO (Association of European Operational Research Societies) that provides an excellent opportunity to discuss recent and important issues in Combinatorial Optimization and its applications.

The ECCO annual meetings aim to bring together researchers in the field of Combinatorial Optimization to present their work, share experiences, and discuss recent advances in theory and applications. The primary objectives are:
*exchanging results and experiences in solving real-world combinatorial optimization problems
*reporting on development and implementation of appropriate models and efficient solution methods for combinatorial optimization problems
*establishing networking contacts between individuals and research groups working on related topics
*promoting the work on combinatorial optimization (theory and applications) to the broader scientific community
*identifying challenging research problems for the field, as well as promising research outlets (both in theory and applications)
*promoting interactions with researchers in other related fields

We seek submissions in all areas of combinatorial optimization from theory through applications.

The submission is limited to a half to one page abstract.

teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels and supervising undergraduate

With the rapid growth of Cyber Physical and Social Computing (CPSC) and
cloud computing, huge volumes of multimedia data collected by various
devices through different communication channels are being processed,
analyzed and mined in order to support many promising services. However,
analysis and mining of multimedia data introduce a number of issues related
to its trust management, especially for multimedia big data. Privacy,
security and trust in multimedia data perception, transmission,
communications, fusion, mining, storage and usage attract special
attentions. In particular, big volumes of multimedia data introduce special
requirements on efficiency, availability and dependability of its trust
management. Trust management for multimedia big data becomes a key issue
that impacts the success of multimedia computing, communications and
applications.

Existing solutions of trust management for multimedia big data are
imperfect or incomprehensive. Multimedia big data brings additional
challenges to trust management research with regard to the security and
privacy of multimedia, the efficiency and accuracy of multimedia process
and the dependability and quality of processing results.

This special issue aims to bring together researchers and practitioners to
discuss various aspects of trust management for multimedia big data,
explore key theories, investigate technology enablers, develop significant
applications and innovate new solutions for overcoming major challenges in
this research area.

Papers will be evaluated based on their originality, presentation,
relevance and contributions, as well as their suitability to the special
issue. The submitted papers must be written in excellent English and
describe original research that has not been published nor currently under
review by other venues. Previously published conference papers should be
clearly identified by the authors at the submission stage and an
explanation should be provided about how such papers have been extended to
be considered for this special issue. Extended conference contributions
must have at least 50% difference from the original works (the authors must
indicate the conference name and make a reference to the base conference
paper). Guest editors will make an initial determination on the suitability
and scope of all submissions. Papers that either lack originality, clarity
in presentation or fall outside the scope of the special issue will not be
sent for review and the authors will be promptly informed in such cases.

The submitted papers will be reviewed by at least three independent
reviewers. Final decisions on accepted papers will be based on their
qualities and their relevance to the theme of this special issue and should
be approved by the journal editors. Manuscripts must be prepared for
publication according to the journal's Author Guidelines available at:
http://tomm.acm.org/. Submissions must conform to the layout, format and
page limit in the guidelines. The authors must select "SI: TM-BigData" when
they reach the "Article Type" step in the submission process.

Applications are invited for a

Ph.D. Position in Computatability Theory

at the newly founded research group Algorithm Engineering headed by Tobias
Friedrich at the Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI) of University of Potsdam,
Germany [1]. The HPI is a unique research and teaching institute in
Germany, which was founded in 1999 as an institute of the University of
Potsdam. HPI carries out internationally acclaimed research and offers
innovative academic majors in the field of IT Systems Engineering. The
institute offers a vibrant scientific environment at the beautiful Campus
Griebnitzsee, which is located at the border to Berlin.

The position is full-time and can be started as soon as possible for the
applicant. The successful applicant is awarded a competitive stipend and
generous travel support.

Applicants should have a strong theoretical/mathematical background and an
interest in the topic of computability theory. The successful applicant
will join a project headed by Dr. Timo Kötzing in the area of Computational
Learning Theory, which relies heavily on the methods of computability
theory.

All applicants should have an excellent Master degree (or equivalent) in
mathematics, computer science or a related discipline. Applications should
include a detailed CV, a copy of master thesis and a list of courses and
