[DMANET] Leverhulme Research Centre for Functional Materials Design 2nd Biennial Symposium 21st -23rd September 2022

Leverhulme Research Centre for Functional Materials Design 2nd Biennial Symposium
Registration NOW OPEN
Call for Posters - deadline 30th June 2022
21st - 23rd September 202022, Liverpool, UK
Join us at the world famous Anfield Stadium, Liverpool, in September 2022 for the 2nd biennial Leverhulme Research Centre for Functional Materials Design Symposium. This symposium is for established and early-career scientists, post-graduate students and industrial researchers interested in materials discovery. We have brought together, under one roof, some of the world leading experts across all areas of materials research, a truly unique symposium is in store. We strongly encourage delegates to submit an abstract for a poster presentation, details for submission can be found here
Developing new high-performance materials is critical to enable next-generation technologies for society. New systematic and effective approaches to this problem are required given the slow pace with which new materials have traditionally been discovered when relying on serendipity and chemical intuition. The complexity and the multi-scale nature of the relationships between material's structure and its properties makes the design of a material with given properties one of grand scientific challenges of our times. The Leverhulme Research Centre for Functional Materials Design is moving this forward by fusing leading-edge synthesis concepts from the physical sciences with ideas from the forefront of computer science, alongside experts in robotics, engineering, management and social science. This symposium brings together experts across different scientific disciplines united by the common goal of accelerating materials discovery to discuss important themes such as grand challenges, the integration of computation and experiment, algorithms, and high throughput methods.

[DMANET] Funded PhD in Attacker-Defender Games, University of Liverpool, UK

=== Funded PhD at the University of Liverpool, UK ===

Application Deadline: 18 April 2022. If a suitable candidate would not be found the position will be re-advertised.
Applications are open for a 4 year fully-funded PhD scholarship in the area of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Liverpool.
This scholarship is open to Home (UK) and International candidates.

*** Algorithms and Decision-Making Processes in Distributed Attacker-Defender Games ***

Description: Computational games provide a powerful abstract framework to model and analyse interactive processes with uncontrollable adversaries or a nature. Abstract representation can reveal the weaknesses in existing strategies and allow to develop new strategies with a mathematical guarantee. For many Attacker-Defender games it can be computationally hard or even undecidable to check the existence of a winning strategy. Various restrictions on the objectives and player's moves/actions can significantly change the computational complexity of the problems. It creates the scope for research on the design of algorithms to verify the existence of the winning strategies or to design new strategies.

The project will focus on developing Theoretical Computer Science techniques to overcome computational constraints by developing approximation algorithms, applying machine learning techniques and solving strategic optimisation and combinatorial problems on different discrete arenas and geometric environments. The solution of these problems in a complex, uncertain and dynamic situation in real-time is a challenging computational task. For problems of representative complexity, this will therefore likely require an application of distributed/decentralised high-performance computing methods.

We are looking for enthusiastic candidate with background in Computer Science, Mathematics or other relative subjects.

[DMANET] Contributing a chapter for a Springer Book on Applications of Remote Sensing Techniques for Sustainable Security In Smart cities

- We apologize if you receive multiple copies of this CFC.

- We appreciate your help to forward this CFC to your friends & email
lists.

Dear colleagues,

We are in the process of coming up with a volume titled *"Applications of
remote sensing techniques for Sustainable Security In Smart cities " *to be
published by Springer (proposal is initially communicated, awaiting for
final approval) at t*he end of 2022.*

We cordially invite you to contribute a chapter. The full chapter is due
later this year but for now, I will just need the following:
- Author List
- Chapter Title
- Abstract (between 2 and 6 sentences)
The last deadline to submit your short abstract directly at lahby@ieee.org
is *April, 20th, 2022*

*SCOPE:*
With the advent of the big data era
in remote sensing, artificial intelligence (AI) has spread to almost every
corner of various remote sensing applications. In many cases, the
characteristics of remote sensing big data, such as multi-source,
multi-scale, high-dimensional, dynamic state, isomeric, and non-linear
features, etc., are well learned by advanced AI algorithms. Data-driven
methods, especially deep learning models, have achieved state-of-the-art
results for most remote sensing image processing tasks (object detection,
segmentation, etc.) and some inverse remote sensing tasks (atmosphere,
vegetation, etc.). Using large labeled datasets, we can often make very
accurate predictions on remote sensing data.
However, current data-driven AI has not provided us with clear physical or
cognitive meaning of remote sensing data's internal features and
representations. Most deep learning techniques do not reveal how data
features take effect and why predictions are made. Remote sensing data has
exacerbated the problem of opacity and inexplicability of current AI. It
becomes a barrier between the latest AI techniques and
some remote sensing applications. Many scientists in
hydrological remote sensing, atmospheric remote sensing,
oceanic remote sensing, etc. do not even believe the results of deep
learning predictions, as these communities are more inclined to believe
models with clear physical meaning.
This forthcoming book seeks contributions to remote sensing data. In
particular, we are looking for research papers on applications of remote
sensing in many field of smart cities such as smart transportation, smart
agriculture, and smart Environment.

*NB: *There are no submission or acceptance fees for manuscripts submitted
to this book for publication

The tentative structure of the book (but are not limited to the following
Parts) is mentioned below:.

*Part 1: *Theoretical and Applied Aspects of Remote Sensing and Smart cities
*Part 2: *Remote Sensing for Smart Agriculture Security
*Part 3:* Remote Sensing for Smart Transportation Security
*Part 4:* Remote Sensing for Smart Environment security
*Part 5:* Artificial Intelligence for Remote Sensing
*Part 6: * Big Data for Remote Sensing
*Part 7: * Futuristic Ideas

Best regards

SCIENTIFIC SUPERVISOR Prof. Massimo Cafaro
RESEARCH TITLE LARGE SCALE DATA MANAGEMENT AND INTEGRATION

DESCRIPTION This is a three year "Marie Curie ETN Early Stage Researcher
position" on the following topic. The sheer quantum of data being
created and collected across jurisdictions requires a carefully planned
and proactive approach to data management. The need for fusion and
integration of multiple data sources characterized by fragmented data
ownership is driving innovative approaches to large scale distributed
data management and integration to avoid inconsistent and inaccurate
data. The aim is to investigate, design and implement a fully
decentralized solution to provide efficient management of dynamically
updated information and support for distributed queries. One or more
domain specific use cases shall be identified within the context of the
project, considering both the current and future needs of some of the
involved partners. These nicely fit into the research plan, owing to the
need of surveying the user's requirements to begin with; simultaneously,
the uses cases can also be thought of as sources of advanced data
management challenges.

For admission to the selection is required the possession of all the
requirements provided by law for access to public employment, the
eligibility requirements provided by the Marie Sklodowska- Curie Action
(https://ec.europa.eu/research/participants/data/ref/h2020/wp/2018-2020/main/h2020-wp1820-msca_en.pdf)
and the following requirements:
a) Master of Science degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering
or equivalent qualification that formally allows access to a PhD program
in Italy;
b) an excellent academic career;
c) must not have carried out more than 4 years of research activity
after obtaining the degree mentioned in the previous point within the
expected starting date of the contract (indicatively fixed at 01.03.2022);
d) have a background relevant to the following areas but not limited to:
distributed computing, databases, distributed data management, security
and privacy; knowledge of C/C++ programming languages and time series
archiving/analysis is a plus;
e) must not have a Ph.D. as of the contract start date;
f) must not have resided or carried out the main activity of study/work
in Italy for more than 12 months during the 3 years preceding the date
of the beginning of the contract;
g) have an excellent knowledge of the English language, in any case
sufficient to ensure the performance of the activity envisaged by the
contract and daily interaction in the working environment;
h) must not have criminal convictions or have pending criminal
proceedings of particular gravity.
Lack of even one of the above requirements will result in exclusion from
the selection process at any time. Qualifications obtained abroad must
normally be previously recognized in Italy in accordance with current
legislation. The equivalence of qualifications obtained abroad that have
not already been recognized in Italy will be evaluated by the Selection
Committee solely for the purpose of admitting the candidate to this call
for selection. The qualifications must be possessed on the date of
expiry of the deadline established for the presentation of applications
for admission to this selection. The University of Salento guarantees
equality and equal opportunities between men and women for the
allocation of the grants in question and the protection of
confidentiality in the processing of personal data, according to the
provisions in force.

[DMANET] Straight-Line Programs, Word Equations and their Interplay -- ICALP 2022 workshop Final CALL FOR PAPERS

* Deadline extension (24.04), basic hybrid mode will be available *

Straight-Line Programs, Word Equations and their Interplay -- ICALP 2022
workshop

July 4th - Paris, France
Website: https://www.eti.uni-siegen.de/ti/slp-we-2022.html

Straight-line programs, i.e., context free grammars that produce a
unique string, have been studied intensively in data compression,
information theory and stringology and found numerous in such areas like
computational group theory, computational topology, program analysis,
and verification. Plandowski and Rytter recognized in the late 1990's
their importance for the solution of word equations. Since then, the
connection between straight-line programs and word equations turned out
to be fruitful.

The goal of the workshop is to disseminate recent results on
straight-line programs and word equations, and help to gain a new
perspective on them, thereby finding possible connections or avenues for
new applications of techniques. For researchers not working in the
field, the workshop will give a good summary on recent progress in this
active field.

** Topics of interest **
Include (but are not limited to):
- Algorithms for straight-line programs
- All aspects of word equations in various classes of (semi)groups
- Applications of straight-line programs in all areas of computer
science and mathematics (group theory, computational topology,
information theory, database theory, algebraic complexity theory, etc.)
- Grammar-based compression and related compression methods and
formalisms (dictionary based compression, string attractors, other
measures of repetitiveness, etc.)
- Extensions of straight-line programs to other data types (trees,
graphs, arrays, etc.)
- Related algebraic formalisms (e.g., noncommutative polynomial identity
testing)
- Equations over trees (e.g., context unification)

** Format **
Currently we plan to have a physical workshop with a basic hybrid mode
available.

** Invited speakers **
Laura Ciobanu (Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, UK)
Joel Day (Loughborough University, UK)
Moses Ganardi (Max Planck Institute for Software Systems,
Kaiserslautern, Germany)

** Submission instructions **

Aims and Scope

With the multiplication and increased availability of specialized hardware and supercomputers for AI applications, the idea of using dedicated architectures (not only hybrid GPU-enhanced parallel platforms but also systems based on quantum annealing) for hard search and optimization problems has seen a rapid development. As fundamental techniques widely used in AI, search and optimization methods (e.g. constraint programming, SAT solving or metaheuristics) share the key concern of using in an efficient manner the computing power at hand, as bigger computing power means the ability to attack more complex combinatorial problems.

Following many experiments in the last decade aimed at efficiently parallelizing different types of methods, the challenge is now to devise efficient techniques and algorithms for Exascale computing, that is, massively parallel computers with hundreds of thousands of cores in the form of heterogeneous hybrid systems based on both multi-core processors and GPUs.

Orthogonal to the deployment of supercomputing hardware, a series of exotic architectures appeared in the last few years, based on quantum annealing (D-Wave systems) or quantum-inspired annealing (Fujitsu's Digital Annealing Unit, Hitachi's CMOS Annealing Machine, Toshiba's Simulated Bifurcation Machine, Fixstars Amplify Annealer Engine). Their main target is to efficiently solve combinatorial optimization problems with dedicated methods on specialized hardware, and clear advances can be expected in that area over the next decade. Even more exotic are the very recent experiments with optical computers tackling combinatorial problems formulated as Ising models.

All these new research directions can pave the way for developing new search algorithms and combinatorial optimization methods or to the re-design of well-known techniques in order to boost this growing area of research through cross-fertilization. This workshop thus aims to be a forum for researchers working on new architectures for search and optimization in diverse fields (AI, HPC, algorithms, hardware, quantum computing), willing to share their experience and to exchange ideas. We would like to provide a cross-community forum for researchers working on any kind of novel architectures, and therefore solicit papers on the following topics, including reports on work in progress, as well as position papers.

Topics include, but are not limited to:

- Parallel and distributed search algorithms for problem solving (search algorithms, constraint solving, SAT solving, SMT, logic programming, planning, etc),
- Parallel metaheuristics (local search, evolutionary algorithms, ant colony optimization, particle swarm optimization, etc)
- Quantum and quantum-inspired annealing for combinatorial problems
- Problem representation in the QUBO and Ising models
- Relations between statistical physics models and combinatorial problems
- Optical computing for combinatorial problems (e.g. based on Ising model)
- Benchmarks and performance comparison between different architectures

Workshop Topics and Paper Submission

We would like to provide a cross-community forum for researchers working on search methods (Constraint Solving, Logic Programming, SAT solving, Artificial Intelligence, etc), combinatorial optimization methods (metaheuristics, local search, tabu search, evolutionary algorithms, ant colony optimization, particle swarm optimization, memetic algorithms, and other types of algorithms) and users of alternative computing architectures (Grids, large PC clusters, massively parallel computers, GPGPUs, edge computing, heterogeneous multicores, quantum annealers, quantum-inspired digital annealers, etc) in order to tackle the challenge of efficient implementations of search and optimization methods on all kinds of exotic hardware.

We thus solicit papers on the above topics, including reports on work in progress, as well as position papers.

Papers must not exceed 10 pages in the IJCAI-ECAI style (https://www.ijcai.org/authors_kit <https://www.ijcai.org/authors_kit>) and should be submitted through EasyChair at https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=naso2022 <https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=naso2022>.

[DMANET] Algorithms research positions within ERC project in Venice, Italy

Dear colleagues,

I'm looking to recruit one assistant professor (3+2 years; RTD-A in Italian
regulation) and several postdocs (up to 3 years each) starting as soon as
September 1st, 2022 (or later) within my ERC StG project REGINDEX (
https://pric.unive.it/projects/regindex). A PhD in Computer Science or
Mathematics is preferred (but not strictly required) for the postdocs,
while a PhD in Computer Science is required for the assistant professor.
The research will take place in the scientific campus of Ca' Foscari
University, Venice (https://apps.unive.it/mappe/sede/990025). The salary is
competitive: about 28k net per year for the postdocs (these positions are
tax-free), and 25k net per year for the assistant professor.

The research fits into the broad area of graph algorithms. The project
introduces a new technique for sorting the nodes of graphs and finite
automata in order to solve efficiently hard problems including graph
isomorphism, NFA equivalence, and compression (see
https://epubs.siam.org/doi/pdf/10.1137/1.9781611975994.55 and
https://epubs.siam.org/doi/pdf/10.1137/1.9781611976465.153 for more
details). Applications include computational pan-genomics, graph databases,
and regular expression matching. The ideal candidate should be skilled in
at least one of the following topics: algorithms, data structures, C++
programming, formal languages, data compression, bioinformatics.
Familiarity with the project's topics and techniques is not a requirement:
anyone interested in the broad topics of graph algorithms and/or formal
languages is welcome to apply.

[DMANET] DACH+ Energy Informatics Deadline Extension

Dear community,

By popular demand, we have extended the paper, poster and demo submission deadline to Friday 22.April.2022 for the DACH+ Energy Informatics conference <https://energy-informatics2022.org/> . The conference will take place 15-16th September 2022 in Freiburg, Germany.

The call for papers can be found: https://energy-informatics2022.org/call-for-papers/

We are looking forward to receiving all the informative and interesting contributions.

Best regards on behalf of the organizers,

Anke Weidlich – General Chair

Ramiz Qussous & Nick Harder – Publicity Chairs

Dirk Neumann, Philipp Staudt & Gunther Gust – TPC Chairs

Astrid Nieße – Doctoral Workshop Chair

*** Energy Informatics 2022 -- Call for Papers ***

Countries worldwide have strengthened their commitment to decarbonize the energy system at COP26 in Glasgow. This intent necessitates a massive increase in renewable power generation and the electrification of energy demand through sector coupling (e.g., heat and mobility). Over the last year, for example, the DACH countries have created roadmaps to establish hydrogen as an additional sustainable energy carrier. Energy informatics contributes to solving many of the challenges of this energy transition, by connecting various decentralized resources and by operating them intelligently.

The objective of the DACH+ conference series on Energy Informatics is to promote research, development, and implementation of information and communication technologies in the energy domain and to foster the exchange between academia, industry, and service providers in the German-Austrian-Swiss region and its neighbouring countries (DACH+).

We seek high-quality original contributions addressing the design, adoption, operation and management of smart energy systems, the integration of intermittent renewable generation and energy efficiency gains through ICT, market approaches and mechanisms for ICT-enabled energy systems, and research on associated (decentralised) data-driven decisions. We welcome theoretical contributions as well as publications addressing system design, implementation, and experimentation. The list of topics of interest to the conference includes, but is not limited to:

• ICT for future energy systems, sector coupling and the integration of intermittent renewable generation

• Information and decision support systems for future energy markets and mechanisms

• Energy system modelling and (open) energy system data

• Protocols and architectures for IT systems in the energy sector

• Data analytics and machine learning for smart energy systems and decentralised decision making, as well as platforms for data analysis

• Open data and software for energy research

• Management of distributed generation and demand side management

• ICT for (multi-) energy networks and micro-grids

• Energy-efficient mobility, charging management for electric vehicles, energy-aware traffic control, and smart grid integration of mobile storage

• Smart buildings, digital metering, occupant comfort, and user interaction

• Adoption of ICT in the energy sector

• Cross-cutting issues including cyber security and privacy protection, interoperability, verification of networked smart grid systems

*** Important Dates ***

• Paper, poster & demo submission: Apr 22, 2022

• Notification: Jun 6, 2022

• Camera-ready paper due: Jun 24, 2022

• Doctoral Workshop: Sep 13-14, 2022

• Conference: Sep 15-16, 2022

*** Posters, Demos and Workshops ***

Submissions for posters, demos, and workshop suggestions are welcome, too. Details can be found on the conference website.

*** Submission and Publication ***

Submitted papers will be reviewed in a double-blind process. Accepted and presented papers will be published in the Springer Open Journal Energy Informatics https://energyinformatics.springeropen.com. The conference language is English, and papers must be written in English. We solicit full research papers (max. 18 pages of content plus 2 additional pages for references) as well as short papers (max. 10 pages of content plus 2 additional pages for references). Templates and instructions will be made available at https://www.energy-informatics.eu/. Further information on the submission of posters and demos is also available on the website. The Open Access fee for the journal article is included in the registration fee.
