We are looking for enthusiastic researchers working in theoretical
computer science to make a major contribution to the Department of
Computer Science and the Centre for Discrete Mathematics and its
Applications (DIMAP) at the University of Warwick activities in research
and teaching.

This is an opportunity to join one of the UK's most prominent Computer
Science departments, widely recognized for its excellence in Theoretical

time of growth in the Department.

The applicants are expected to hold a PhD or equivalent in Theoretical

[DMANET] Summer issue of the EATCS Bulletin

Dear DMANET community,

The Interview Column features Sergio Rajsbaum. He tells us about his
experiences when, 30 years ago, he travelled all the way from Mexico to
Israel to study at the Technion, and soon after became part of Shimon
Even's academic family. He also reflects on what makes a good team mate, a
good PhD advisor, and on the role of trust in general.

The Distributed Computing Column, edited by Seth Gilbert, features an
article by Helen Xu who shares with us "everything we need to know" about
how to design efficient parallel applications that operate on dynamic
graphs, from container designs (i.e., data structures), over interfaces for
interacting with a dynamic graph, to performance benchmarking.

In the Formal Language Theory Column, edited by Giovanni Pighizzini, Markus
L. Schmid highlights the relationship between a recent research area in
database theory, namely the information extraction framework of document
spanners, and classical formal language theory.

In the Logic in Computer Science Column, Yuri Gurevich and Andreas Blass
discuss some of the many foundational problems raised by the ongoing AI
revolution, in a thought-provoking dialogue.

The Bulletin further includes reports from the EATCS Japan Chapter and the
40th British Colloquium for Theoretical Computer Science.

[DMANET] Fulkerson 100 workshop: U. Waterloo, Jul 17-19, 2024: final announcement

The Dept. of Combinatorics & Optimization (C&O) at the University of Waterloo is hosting a 3-day research workshop, Fulkerson 100, from July 17-19, 2024 (https://www.math.uwaterloo.ca/~fulkerson100/) in honor of Ray Fulkerson's centenary year of birth. Fulkerson was one of the leading figures in combinatorial optimization, and his seminal work has had a profound and lasting impact in shaping the fields of combinatorial optimization and Operations Research.
(This is the Wed-Fri of the week right before ISMP 2024 in Montreal.)

The workshop will feature invited talks (https://www.math.uwaterloo.ca/~fulkerson100/invited.html) by distinguished researchers in the areas of graph theory, combinatorics, optimization, and theoretical computer science (TCS). It will also feature lightning talks and a poster session to showcase research by students and postdocs. We hope to bring together a wide variety of researchers in discrete mathematics, while (implicitly) commemorating Fulkerson's vision and contributions.

The exponential growth of data generated from various textual sources presents both a challenge and a huge opportunity. A key challenge lies in effectively managing and extracting valuable insights from this vast amount of unstructured and heterogeneous data. To address this issue, advanced data analytics techniques, ranging from data and text mining to semantic network analysis and recent advancements in large language models (LLMs), have become indispensable tools for researchers and practitioners.


This is particularly relevant in the realm of biomedicine, where text mining has shown the ability to enable researchers to uncover hidden patterns, trends, and associations that would otherwise remain buried in the vast amount of health-related textual data, for instance, research articles, clinical reports, and electronic health records (EHRs).


On the other hand, semantic network analysis, which focuses on understanding the structure and dynamics of networks formed by entities and their interconnections derived from text mining processes, can facilitate a deeper understanding of the complex interrelationships within biomedical data. By analyzing properties like centrality, modularity, and community structures, researchers can identify key nodes and critical pathways in biological networks, predict disease associations, and explore the functional organization of biological systems.


The integration of text mining, semantic network analysis, and large language models offers a powerful approach to enhancing the ability to generate new hypotheses and insights and supporting the development of more effective diagnostics, treatments, and interventions.


The workshop represents an opportunity to explore the latest advancements in data analytics and text mining in biomedicine. Attendees will gain insights into developing more interpretable models, handling large-scale biomedical datasets, and implementing scalable solutions for real-world healthcare applications.


Moreover, the workshop is highly relevant because it has the potential to significantly improve the safety, effectiveness, and efficiency of biomedical interventions through advanced data analytics.

AIMS AND SCOPE

 Since its introduction in the late 1980s, Answer Set Programming (ASP)
has been widely applied to various knowledge-intensive tasks and
combinatorial search problems.ASPwas found to be closely related to SAT,
which led to a new method of computing answer sets using SAT solvers and
techniques adapted from SAT. This has been a much studied relationship,
and is currently extended towards satisfiability modulo theories (SMT).
The relationship ofASPto other computing paradigms, such as constraint
satisfaction, quantified Boolean formulas (QBF), Constraint Logic
Programming (CLP), first-order logic (FOL), and FO(ID) is also the
subject of active research. Consequently, new methods of computing
answer sets are being developed based on relationships to these formalisms.

 Furthermore, the practical applications ofASPalso foster work on
multi-paradigm problem-solving, and in particular language and solver
integration. The most prominent examples in this area currently are the
integration ofASPwith description logics (in the realm of the Semantic
Web) and constraint satisfaction (which recently led to the Constraint
Answer Set Programming (CASP) research direction).

 A large body of general results regardingASPis available and several
efficientASPsolvers have been implemented. However, there are still
significant challenges in applyingASPto real life applications, and more
interest in relatingASPto other computing paradigms is emerging. This
 workshop will provide opportunities for researchers to identify these
challenges and to exchange ideas for overcoming them.

Symposium on Simplicity in Algorithms (SOSA) is a conference in theoretical computer science dedicated to advancing algorithms research by promoting simplicity and elegance in the design and analysis of algorithms. The benefits of simplicity are manifold: simpler algorithms manifest a better understanding of the problem at hand; they are more likely to be implemented and trusted by practitioners; they are more easily taught and are more likely to be included in algorithms textbooks; and they attract a broader set of researchers to difficult algorithmic problems.

Papers in all areas of algorithms research are sought. An ideal submission will advance our understanding of an algorithmic problem by, for example, introducing a simpler algorithm, presenting a simpler analysis of an existing algorithm, or offering insights that generally simplify our understanding of important algorithms or computational problems.

We are especially interested in papers that make material more accessible to a wider audience, such as undergraduates, or for more specialized topics, general algorithms researchers.
Submissions should contain novel ideas or attractive insights, but they are not required to prove novel theorems. That is, the results themselves can be known, but their presentation must be new.

AIMS AND SCOPE

LPNMR 2024 is the seventeenth in the series of international meetings on logic programming and non-monotonic reasoning. LPNMR is a forum for exchanging ideas on declarative logic programming, non-monotonic reasoning, and knowledge representation. The aim of the conference is to facilitate interactions between researchers and practitioners interested in the design and implementation of logic-based programming languages and database systems, and those working in knowledge representation and non-monotonic reasoning. LPNMR strives to encompass theoretical and experimental studies that have led or will lead to advances in declarative programming and knowledge representation, as well as their use in practical applications.
LPNMR 2024 aims to bring together researchers from LPNMR core areas and application areas of the aforementioned kind in order to share research experiences, promote collaboration and identify directions for joint future research.

[New Conference Model]
We experiment with a new conference model. There will be TWO
deadlines. The review process for these two deadlines will not overlap
to allow papers rejected during the first review phase to be reworked,
corrected, and enhanced before being resubmitted on the second review
round, if wished by the authors. Papers may be submitted at only one
deadline. Of course, accepted papers of the first review round are
definitely accepted and should not be submitted to the second round.
In case of resubmission, reviews from the first phase will be
transmitted to the reviewers of the second phase.

All submissions must conform to the formatting instructions of

Each submission must be an original work written in English, in PDF
format.


[Double-blind Review]
All submissions must be anonymous. We use a somewhat relaxed
implementation of double-blind peer review: you are free to
disseminate your work through arXiv and other online repositories and
give presentations on your work as usual. However, please make sure
you do not mention your own name or affiliation in the submission, and
please do not include obvious references in the text that reveal your
identity. A reviewer who has not previously seen the paper should be
able to read it without accidentally learning the identities of the
authors. Please feel free to ask the general co-chairs if you have any
questions about the double-blind policy of SSS 2024.


[Submissions]
There are two types of submissions: regular papers and brief announcements.
- A regular submission must not exceed 15 pages (including the title,
abstract, figures, and references).
- A brief announcement submission must not exceed 5 pages and should
not include any appendix.

Additional necessary details for an expert to verify the main claims
of the submission may be included in a clearly marked appendix if
extra space is needed.

Any submission deviating from these guidelines will be rejected
without consideration of its merits. It is recommended that a regular
submission begins with a succinct statement of the problem being
addressed, a summary of the main results or conclusions, a brief
explanation of their significance, a brief statement of the key ideas,
and a comparison with related work, all tailored to a non-specialist.
Technical development of the work, directed to the specialist, should
follow. Papers outside of the conference scope will be rejected
without review. For the second round only, if requested by the authors
on the cover page, a regular submission that is not selected for a
regular presentation will also be considered for the brief
announcement format. This will not affect consideration of the paper
for a regular presentation.


[Publication]
Regular papers and brief announcements will be included in the
conference proceedings. Conference proceedings will be published by
Springer in the LNCS conference series.


[Special Issue]
Extended and revised versions of selected papers will be considered
for a special issue of Theoretical Computer Science (TCS,
https://www.sciencedirect.com/journal/theoretical-computer-science).


[Paper Award]
Prizes will be given to the best regular paper and best student
regular paper. A regular paper is eligible for the best student paper
if at least one of its authors is a full-time student at submission
time. Authors should clearly indicate whether their submission is
eligible to be considered for the best student paper award (e.g.,
using a \thanks in the title). The PC may decline to confer awards or
may split awards.

The Institute of Algorithms and Complexity at TUHH: Hamburg University
of Technology (www.algo.tuhh.de) in Hamburg, Germany offers an exciting
opportunity to work as a PhD student at the forefront of
algorithms/optimization.

The successful candidate will research algorithms for
discrete/combinatorial optimization problems, mathematical programming,
algorithmic game theory, or related field. We provide close supervision
and support by a panel of established professors and scientists.
Transferable skills and career development are an integral part of the
PhD program. The working language of the institute is English.

This is a full-time position (100%) which comes with an employment
contract for 3 years and social security. The salary of the position is
determined according to level TV-L E-13 of the German public sector. The
exact amount of salary depends on experience, family circumstances, tax
classification and other factors. Travel funding is available, for
attending conferences and workshops, and visiting other researchers.

The successful candidate will join the TUHH Institute for Algorithms and
Complexity (www.algo.tuhh.de), whose research covers a broad spectrum of
algorithmic research; this includes algorithmic game theory,
combinatorial optimization, approximation and parameterized algorithms,
and applications in operations research and discrete mathematics. The
Institute for Algorithms and Complexity at TU Hamburg currently hosts
several international researchers, so English is used on a daily basis
as a working language.

The institute is located in the newly built Hamburg Innovation Port

which is located right at the Harburg harbour with great views of the
harbour and Hamburg's famous opera house (Elbphilharmonie). Several
other computer science institutes of the TU Hamburg are located in the
area, as well as DASHH - Data Science in Hamburg, the Helmholtz Graduate
School for the Structure of Matter, and the German Air and Space
Research Center (DLR). They are all located in the Free and Hanseatic
City of Hamburg, which is Germany's second largest city, home to a

universities and much research in algorithms.

optimization is appreciated. Programming experience is considered a plus.

[DMANET] Second Call: Lecturer in Algorithms and Complexity at the University of Bristol, UK

The School of Computer Science at the University of Bristol is looking to appoint an outstanding candidate for a lectureship (roughly equivalent to the level of Assistant Professor in the North American system) in Algorithms and Complexity. Our aim is to hire an ambitious theorist with a proven track record of high-quality publications whose ambition is to develop and pursue their independent research agenda. We will consider applicants from all subfields within Algorithms and Complexity research.

You will join our steadily growing Algorithms and Complexity research group, which is internationally recognized for their work on algorithms and lower bounds in the fields of sublinear algorithms, randomized algorithms, graph and string algorithms, and parameterized and fine-grained complexity. * Aim and Scope
Combinatorial Reconfiguration studies reachability and related questions
over combinatorial structures. (See, e.g., a survey at
https://doi.org/10.3390/a11040052 ) These types of questions arise in
many areas of computer science, mathematics, and related fields. In
addition to presenting the latest research findings related to
combinatorial reconfiguration, a major feature of this workshop is to
allocate ample time for participants to engage in working sessions
tackling open problems. Our previous workshops have each resulted in new
    collaborations, many stemming from open problem sessions during
which researchers have a chance to meet and work together for the first
time.

* Call for Presentations
We are seeking participants interested in presenting in one or more of
the following types of sessions:
- Contributed talks
- Mentoring sessions
- Open problem sessions

All topics relating to any aspect or application of combinatorial
reconfiguration are welcome, including both published and unpublished
work. Presentations of ongoing work and open problems are encouraged.

Mentoring sessions are designed for newcomers to the area to obtain
feedback from more senior members in the community, including on work in
progress.

Open problem sessions will be used as the starting point for working
sessions during the workshop, allowing for new collaborations to be
formed. We will accommodate new open problem presentations suggested
during the workshop if time permits; submitting open problems by the
submission deadline will ensure a reserved time slot.

Please feel free to propose more than one type of presentation. For each
proposed presentation, please provide a title and a single paragraph
explaining what will be discussed, via the Google form below. If you are
submitting more than one proposal, use the Google form once for each
proposal. There will be no formal refereeing process; however, the
Program Committee reserves the right to reject contributions that are
substantially off-topic.

As technology advances in different sub-domains of computing, data-driven models are becoming increasingly important. The data-dependent world now faces many challenges in terms of data accuracy and data privacy. High-impact advancements include machine learning, artificial intelligence, deep learning and many more. Data is growing exponentially in terms of diversity and complexity. One organization or industry processes over a few million transactions per hour and stores hundreds of billions of data. We live in a world with a great need for more efficient data analysis and processing. Data analytics can reveal hidden patterns, complex relationships, internal information relations, and even segmentation. Data applications have opened up new possibilities in every aspect of our lives. Studying data and its structure, dynamics, and modern data technologies is ongoing. There is a great deal of literature and research on data management, but it does not address the data processing needs. Many studies focus on developing models and systems for analyzing large datasets.

Data analysis leads to application domains that have a systematic impact on decisions. The knowledge gained from the data analysis enables the generation of critical information for multiple domains. In this conference, we review and discuss the latest trends in data management, the opportunities and challenges, and how they have affected organizations' ability to develop effective business and technology strategies and stay up-to-date in data technology. Week (HCRW)*, from *September 21 to 27, 2024*.

*HIGHLIGHTS'24* is the twelfth in the series of international conferences
"Highlights of Logic, Games and Automata", aiming at integrating the
community working in algorithmic model theory, automata theory, databases,
games for logic and verification, logic and verification. Papers from these
areas are dispersed across many conferences, which makes them difficult to
follow. A visit to the HIGHLIGHTS conference should offer a wide picture of
the latest research in the field and a chance to meet everybody in the
community, not just those who happen to publish in one particular
proceedings volume. There are no publications.

Jewels of Automata Theory 2024 will survey a wide picture of research in
automata theory and related mathematical fields. It will consist of invited
lectures which describe significant progress over the past years, and will
be a meeting point for both young and senior researchers to learn and to
discuss about automata theory, its connections with mathematics and its
applications.

*HIGHLIGHTS'24* key features:

- HIGHLIGHTS is a conference without publications, where speakers give
short presentations of their best work.

MODALITIES OF ATTENDANCE

*HIGHLIGHTS'24* is an event that will take place on-site (barring
unforeseen circumstances), and the preferred form of participation is in
person. Remote attendance via a video stream will also be offered, but with
limited possible interactions for these participants.

Submission to Highlights'24 is open to everyone, and attendance to the
conference is not a requirement. The selection procedure will not take into
account in-person attendance. Authors who do not intend to attend
Highlights'24 in-person must commit to this choice when submitting their
talk proposal. If accepted, authors of such talk proposals will have the
opportunity to share a prerecorded video of their talk, which will be made
available on the conference website.

Before coming from far away, please review how your trip and international
flights are contributing to climate change. We encourage you to take the
train as much as possible, possibly taking the opportunity for visiting
colleagues on the way and thus decomposing the travel into smaller pieces.

More generally, we encourage you to make the most of your stay. This means
extending your journey to the previous and/or following weeks for more
scientific activities in Bordeaux and around. Several initiatives are here
to help you in this task:

SUBMISSIONS AND GUIDELINES

Submissions should take the form of a short abstract describing the content
of the presentation and its interest. It should serve as a proposal for a
presentation. Hence, submissions should have a single author — the speaker.
They can concern any recently published, to be published, or ongoing work
of the speaker. We expect you to present your favourite result of the year,
so there should be at most one submission per speaker. The abstract should
list co-authors, if any. Optionally, an extended abstract of up to two
pages may be attached as a PDF file.

We encourage both young and senior researchers to present.

The *submission deadline is Monday, June 17*, with a *notification by June
28*.

Submissions will not lead to publications. There are no formal proceedings
and we encourage the presentation of work published or presented elsewhere.

The talk (which is short, around 10 minutes) can be doubled with a poster.

HIGHLIGHTS EXTENDED STAY SUPPORT SCHEME (HESSS)

The *HESSS* is an incentive for collaborations between participants of the
conference and researchers working in research groups reachable by train
from the conference location. The objective is to foster interactions with
low carbon footprint. The mechanism is as follows:

- Research groups willing to participate in the scheme are listed on the
webpage: https://highlights-conference.org/2024/hesss. These groups are
offering to fund collaborations between HIGHLIGHTS participants and their
members.
- The pair of a HIGHLIGHTS participant and a member of a listed research
group submit a proposal, which takes the form of an email containing names,
period of collaboration, and a sentence describing the planned activity. It
has to be sent to the *HESSS* contact person of the research unit
(better through zulip).
- The decision of acceptance is up to the research group. In particular,
it may be subject to scientific scope, number of requests, or e.g.,
favouring distant participants.
- The only strict rule is that the visit should be around HIGHLIGHTS,
and no airplane should be taken by the visitor to travel from HIGHLIGHTS to
the visit location.
