In the last years, the increasing social awareness about the need for containing energy consumption within sustainable rates has caught the interest of both the industrial and academic communities. In this scenario, Internet - and more generally ICT - may play a twofold role, being both a significant energy consumer and a potential actor in steering a more clever usage of energy resources.

Both aspects of the problem raise interesting scientific challenges, and require a comprehensive effort and inter-disciplinary research at all levels of abstraction. The goal of this conference is to bring together people from different research areas, and provide a forum to exchange ideas, discuss solutions, and share experiences among researchers, professionals, and application developers both from industry and academia.

Original papers addressing both theoretical and practical aspects of energy-awareness for Internet-based systems, and the design of ICT solutions for eco-sustainability are solicited. Papers of interest should point out the expected long-term benefits to eco-sustainability.

EDITORIAL FOLLOW-UP

The best paper presented at the conference will receive the Best Paper Award. Papers of particular merit will be considered for a SPECIAL ISSUE in the Elsevier Journal of COMPUTER COMMUNICATIONS.

3rd Workshop on Data Mining in Agriculture (DMA'2012)

Data mining, the art and science of intelligent analysis of (usually
large) data sets for meaningful (and previously unknown) insights, is
nowadays actively applied in a wide range of disciplines related to
agriculture. Due to the emerging importance of data mining techniques
and methodologies in the area of agriculture, this workshop aims to
bring together practitioners and researchers in this field. It creates a
community of people who are actively using data mining tools and
techniques and apply them to agriculture data.

The goal of this workshop is to provide a forum for identifying
important contributions and opportunities for research on data mining
and agriculture.

Submission Guidelines

Papers must be written in English. Regular Papers describing original research as well as design, development and experimental
results of operational systems, and Practical Experience Reports describing on-going industrial projects, prototype systems and
exploratory or emerging applications, should be no longer than 10 pages, following the IEEE two-column format for conference
proceedings, in font size no smaller than 10 points, and must fit properly on US "Letter"-sized paper (8.5 x 11 inches). All
papers that deviate from these specifications will be rejected automatically. Authors are requested to first register their
submissions and submit their manuscripts in PDF format. Submission details can be found at http://web.mst.edu/~cswebdb/srds2012/.
Accepted papers will appear in the symposium proceedings, which will be published by the IEEE Computer Society.

Best Paper Award

All papers accepted for presentation at the symposium will be evaluated by the Best Paper Award Co-Chairs for the best paper award.

Scope and Objectives:

The EURO Mini Conference XXVIII dedicated to Variable Neighborhood Search
(EUROmC-XVIII-VNS) will be held in Herceg Novi (Montenegro) October
4-7,2012. The EURO Mini Conferences (EUROmC) constitute one of the
instruments provided by EURO (the Association of European Operational
Research societies) to promote the research in its field of interest. Each
EUROmC is a specialized conference focusing on a particular promising OR
theme of research. These events are organized to allow specialists and
practitioners of the selected topic of research to effectively screen papers
participate in lively debates.

VNS is a metaheuristic based on systematic changes in the neighborhood
structure within a search, for solving optimization problems and related

[DMANET] Special Issue of Elsevier Computer Networks "Towards a Science of Cyber Security"

"Towards a Science of Cyber Security"

Cyber systems are ubiquitous in modern society. Examples of such systems
include communication systems, critical infrastructure control and
management systems, defense and homeland security command, control and
intelligence systems. The integrity of cyber systems is critical for
maintaining a functioning society. However, in spite of substantial
investment of human and financial capital for design of robust and secure
cyber systems over the years, the current systems are still vulnerable on
many fronts. Ensuring cyber-security is a complex task, as it has to deal
with strategies developed by ingenious agents determined to penetrate and
disrupt systems by exploiting vulnerabilities at multiple layers of the
protocol stack. Most current approaches to cyber-security are reactive and
attempt to solve the security issues in an ad-hoc manner. Clearly, ad-hoc
approaches can only provide ad-hoc fixes, without shedding any deep
insight on the nature of the security problem. In order to identify
foundational principles of cyber security, a strategic research approach
is absolutely essential. Tools and techniques from related disciplines of
network science, graph theory, game theory, control theory, coding theory,
algorithms and complexity theory, machine learning, statistical mechanics,
data mining, dynamical systems, computational sociology and others have
the potential to help develop a comprehensive science of cyber security.
We invite authors to submit original research and review articles that
explore and develop novel methods to fight cyber attacks that go beyond
traditional single-point signature based anomaly detection schemes.

* Internet-scale measurement and analysis of online communities
* Multi-protocol interaction graphs
* Diffusion/Percolation theoretic analysis of attack propagation
* Statistical properties of temporal interaction graphs

Proposals are invited for special sessions on any topic relevant to the

as the papers submitted to the regular sessions. It is expected that
the organizers of the special sessions appoint their own chair and
program committee, which will be integrated in the conference program
committee and will be supervised by the conference programme chair
and by the general chair.

Workshops
---------
Proposals for satellite workshops are also invited. The satellite
workshops should have topics related to SYNASC but the scientific
program of each satellite workshop is managed by the workshop
organizers. Authors contributing to a workshop would be required
to register for the symposium.

Tutorials
---------
Proposals for tutorials are also invited. Tutorials provide fundamental
exposure to topics ranging from introductory through intermediate to advanced.
The number and the duration of the tutorials will be decided by the tutorial
chair under the supervision of the general chair. Depending on the number and
the quality of the proposals for tutorials, they may be organized as a SYNASC
Autumn School.

Workshop Aim:

The aim of this workshop is to bring together researchers that are
interested in designing, developing and applying efficient
data and text mining techniques for discovering the underlying
knowledge existing in biomedical data.

Bioinformatics is an emerging field of science that plays a crucial
role in managing, processing and computationally analyzing
biological and biomedical data such as sequences, gene expressions and
pathways. Biomedical researchers face the fundamental
issue of making efficient use of a tremendous amount of data that is
produced and deposited in public, in order to improve and
enhance their understanding of complex biomedical systems. As a result,
there is an urgent need for novel efficient computational
methods and tools to facilitate the process of managing and discovering
useful patterns and knowledge from these large biomedical
data repositories.

Data mining plays an essential role in Bioinformatics since it is the
process of automatic discovering of hidden meaningful and useful
patterns
and correlations in large amounts of data. Data mining approaches
provide tools for dealing with biomedical problems such as protein
structure
prediction, efficient clustering of gene expression data and efficient
gene classification. Also, of significant importance is biomedical text
mining, that is the process of automatically exploiting enormous amount
of knowledge available in biomedical
literature such as automatic extraction of protein-protein
interactions, named entity recognition, text classification and
terminology extraction.

Although considerable progress has been made recently in these areas,
many of the fundamental issues in bioinformatics such as the ability of
completely automatic extraction of useful information from structured
or unstructured data remain open challenging tasks.
The proposed workshop aims at giving the opportunity to researchers to
present their original work on issues pertaining to data and text mining
in
bioinformatics.

We encourage papers that present novel mining techniques and tools for
the following tasks:

Biomedical Database management
Gene expression analysis
Protein structure prediction
Prediction of protein-protein interaction
Text Mining in Biomedical Literature
Web Mining Bioinformatics applications

Submission:
All papers should be submitted by email to both Program Chair Christos

There will be two types of submissions to AiML-2012: (1) Full papers

(1) FULL PAPERS. Authors are invited to submit, for presentation at the conference
and publication in the proceedings, full papers reporting on original research

by College Publications (http://www.collegepublications.co.uk) in a volume
to be made available at the conference. The submissions should be at
most 15 pages, with an optional technical appendix of up to 5 pages, together
with a plain-text abstract of 100-200 words. The submissions must be typeset in
LaTeX, using the style files and template provided on the AiML'2012

We also ask authors of full papers to submit the abstract in plain text to the

(2) SHORT PRESENTATIONS. These should be at most 5 pages. They may describe preliminary
results, work in progress etc., and will be subject to light reviewing. The
accepted submissions will be made available at the conference, and the authors will
have the opportunity to make short presentations (of up to 15 minutes) on
them.

SPECIAL SESSION ON HYBRID LOGIC. Hybrid logic is an extension of modal logic
allowing to refer explicitly to states of the model in the syntax of formulas.
There will be a special session of AiML devoted to papers on hybrid logic.
The scope of the special session is standard hybrid-logical machinery like
nominals, satisfaction operators, and the downarrow binder, but also other
extensions of modal logic can be considered.

SPECIAL SESSION IN HONOUR OF LARISA MAKSIMOVA. There will be a
special session of AiML devoted to papers and talks in honour of Larisa
Maksimova, in recognition of her many outstanding contributions to modal
logic.

SPECIAL SESSION ON MODALITES FOR TYPES. Recent years have witnessed significant
growth of interest in constructive type-theoretical modalities, in particular
modalities ensuring productivity and type safety of (co-)recursive definitions in
reactive programming. Some earlier examples include the use of modalities for staged
computation, metaprogramming or in computational lambda-calculus. In order to boost
interaction between programming, type-theoretical and modal communities, AiML 2012
will host a special session on these topics.

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral fellow (PDF) in bioinformatics. Successful applicants will join the bioinformatics research group and conduct research in topics related to computational biology and bioinformatics. The positions are initially for one year, but renewable up to three years depending on the applicant's performance. The starting date of the appointment must be on or before September 1, 2012. The salary range for PDF is HK$267,540 - 515,700 (approximately US$34,000 - 66,000) for 12 months.
The salary to be offered commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the candidate.
Annual leave and medical benefits will also be available.

Candidates are expected to hold a PhD degree in a relevant discipline at the time of taking up the position and have proven record of outstanding research in a related area. Applicants should provide a CV, future research plan, and the names of three references.

Algorithms have become a fundamental tool in several fields outside of
Computer Science, and in several applications algorithms have to cope with
computationally hard problems and problems in which the input is gradually
disclosed over time.

The workshop focuses on the design and analysis of approximation and
online algorithms. It also covers experimental methods used to design and
analyze efficient approximation and online algorithms. WAOA 2012 will be
part of ALGO 2012, which also hosts ESA, WABI, ALGOSENSORS, ATMOS, IPEC
and MASSIVE. ALGO 2012 will take place 9-14 September 2012 in Ljubljana,
Slovenia.

Papers must be written in English. Regular Papers describing original research as well as design, development and experimental results of operational systems, and Practical Experience Reports describing on-going industrial projects, prototype systems and exploratory or emerging applications, should be no longer than 10 pages, following the IEEE two-column format for conference proceedings, in font size no smaller than 10 points, and must fit properly on US "Letter"-sized paper (8.5 x 11 inches). All papers that deviate from these specifications will be rejected automatically. Authors are requested to first register their submissions and submit their manuscripts in PDF format. All accepted papers will be published in the proceedings of the symposium (with ISBN), to be published by the IEEE Computer Society. They will be available at a later date than the date of the symposium. Selected papers will be published in a special issue of the Springer Journal of Transactions on Computational Science, International Journal of Applied Logistics (IJAL) IGI and other journals. Abstracts of the accepted and invited contributions will be available at the Symposium. All papers will be available online. Selected papers (up to 10) will be published in a special issue of the Springer journal Transactions on Computational Science and other journals. Information Technology (IIIT), which is located in
Electronics City of Bangalore. It is two hours by car from Bangalore
International Airport (transport from airport

internationally known as the Silicon Valley of the East
with many hi-tech companies and research labs. Holding the conference
in the Electronics City of Bangalore gives
the conference participants valuable opportunity to discuss and
network with the software practitioners and researchers
in Indiaís Information Technology (IT) hub. This will be further
facilitated via an Industry Day, a special feature
of ICTAC 2012.

BACKGROUND

ICTAC 2012 is the 9th International Colloquium on Theoretical Aspects
of Computing, the latest in a series founded
by the International Institute for Software Technology of the United
Nations University (UNU-IIST). ICTAC 2012 will
bring together practitioners and researchers from academia, industry
and government to present research and to exchange
ideas and experience addressing challenges in both theoretical aspects
of computing and in the exploitation of theory
through methods and tools for system development. The other main
purpose is to promote cooperation in research and
education between participants and their institutions, from developing
and industrial countries, as in the mandate
of the United Nations University.

The topics of the conference include, but are not limited to:

INDUSTRY DAY

ICTAC 2012 will feature an Industry Day, a special feature being
introduced to the ICTAC colloquium for the first
time. One of the days of the conference is planned to be marked as
Industry Day. The industry day will feature
technical talks from the industry participants. These talks will be
drawn from the papers submitted and accepted to
the conference; however any such paper must have at least one
co-author from the Industry and must be clearly marked
for ìIndustry Dayî during submission. In addition, we plan to have
tool demonstrations and posters by the companies
in the exhibition floor. Participants from academia will thus also get
a chance to mingle with the industry participants
in an informal atmosphere, thereby getting a flavor of the ongoing
activities in Bangaloreís IT industry.

PUBLICATION AND SUBMISSION

The proceedings of ICTAC 2012 will be published by Springer
in the series Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) and
will be available at the colloquium. A special issue of a
journal with extended version of selected papers from
ICTAC 2012 is under negotiation.

Submissions to the colloquium must not have been published
or be concurrently considered for publication elsewhere.
All submissions will be judged on the basis of originality,
contribution to the field, technical and presentation quality,
and relevance to the conference.

Submissions can be either Regular Papers or Short Papers.
Short papers can present recent or ongoing work or discuss new
ideas which are at an early stage of development and have not
been thoroughly evaluated yet.

Papers should be written in English. Regular Papers should not
exceed 15 pages and Short Papers should be between 4 and 8 pages
in LNCS format (see http://www.springer.de/comp/lncs/authors.html

The special issue of Internet Mathematics "Searching and mining the Web and social networks" invites original research papers on algorithmic and mathematical methods for search and mining in web and social networks. The rapid growth and evolution in structure and content of the World Wide Web in recent years poses new algorithmic challenges in Web search. In addition, social networks (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn) gained enormous popularity in the last few years. The active use of social networks spreads beyond their initial purposes making them important for political or social events. Algorithmic analysis of Web and social networks is essential for the practical accessibility and efficient usage of the enormous amount of data available on the Web. Furthermore, mathematical analysis of network algorithms is vital for their justifiable improvement.

The special issue will publish high quality research articles, review papers, and position papers related to theoretical and empirical analysis for search and mining of the (social) Web. The topics include but are not limited to the following:

Information-Centric Networking (ICN) is proposed as an architecture
for the future Internet. The basic idea is to make units of
information accessible to the networking protocols and turn them into
the unit of networking. Main advantages are conjectured to come from
a much better support for mobility, data security, as well as caching
and replication. ICN has by now been investigated in a number of
projects.

This special issue aims to collect new, innovative material on the
theory, the design, and the practical applicability of ICN. In
particular, material that advances the level of maturity, scalability
and real-life dependability of ICN are welcome.

Topics of interest include (but are not limited to) the following:

- Analytic models for the behavior of information-centric networking,
especially for scalability properties
- Models for workloads (both amount of traffic as well as kinds and
size of objects along with request patterns)
- Capacity analysis of ICN
- Caching in ICN, in particular, cache placement and cache management
(e.g., replacement algorithms) along with resource management for
caches, links, and routers
- Coexistence of ICN protocol stacks with legacy stacks (e.g., IP) as
well as coexistence of multiple ICNs with each other on the same
network fabric
- Suitability of ICN for all kinds of workloads, in particular,
streaming and interactive multimedia workloads
- Security in ICN
- Mobility support by ICN
- Energy efficiency of ICN
- Active objects in ICN, adding functionality and execution semantics
to information objects
- Consistency and coherence models for replicated, static or active
information objects, along with revision handling and updating
protocols
- Structuring applications on top of ICN (both legacy and possible new
applications) as well as suitable application programming interfaces
(complementing or replacing a "socket"-style interface standard)
- Interoperability between different ICN solutions
- Practical experience, test-beds, open-source software
