=============================================================================================================================

OzCHI is the annual non-profit conference for the Computer-Human
Interaction Special Interest Group (CHISIG) of the Human
Factors and Ergonomic Society of Australia and Australia's leading forum
for the latest in HCI research and practice. OzCHI
attracts a broad international community of researchers, industry
practitioners, academics and students. Participants come
from a range of backgrounds, including interface designers, user experience
(UX) practitioners, information architects,
software engineers, human factors experts, information systems analysts and
social scientists.

After 18 years, OzCHI finally come back to Western Australia. Time has
passed and things have changed a lot since OzCHI 2001.
More HCI and UX works have been done in Western Australia as well as its
neighbouring countries. Having the privilege to
convene the 2nd OzCHI conference in Western Australia, one of our
objectives is to be inclusive towards attendees across
overall Asia-Pacific.

The conference theme is Experience Design in Asia Pacific, which highlights
the challenges we all face in the endeavour
to tame the environment without destroying it to ensure our continuing
existence. Our vision is to make OzCHI 2019 as
an inclusive event for academic, industry, research, start-ups, maker
communities to learn and exchange knowledge in the
recent and emerging HCI and UX areas - practical, technical, empirical and
theoretical aspects regardless their level of
maturity in the fields.

We invite contributions on all topics related to Human-Computer
Interaction, Interaction Design, Architecture,
Engineering, Planning, Social Science, Creative Industries, and other
related disciplines.

Creating * Designing * Experiencing * Innovating * Intelligence * Community
* Reaching out to Asia-Pacific

Join us in Perth/Fremantle, Western Australia in December 2019 to explore
and understand the design and role of contemporary interactive
technologies.

[DMANET] Entangling QCousins: “We invite everyone to be part of the second quantum revolution!”

The current quantum cousins[*] are looking for entangling with new
quantum cousins!

Join our superposition with the global project "Entangling QCousins".

-----

With the success of the QDrive project[**] (summer 2019), we are
taking the next step.

We are now five QCousins (QLatvia, QTurkey, QHungary, QBalkan, and
QPoland) looking for entangling with new ones. Potential new QCousins
should invite some of the present QCousins, and organize a public
educational event together with them. We aim to expand our scope
globally by having 50+ QCousins by the end of 2023.

The idea behind "being cousins" is to create active groups on a global
scale, who can support and encourage each other, even though they may
operate only locally.

Check the following link for the details: https://ej.uz/entangling

Please feel free to distribute our announcement with the ones who can
be interested.

-----

[*] Quantum cousins (QCousins) are operational groups all around the
world willing to popularize quantum technologies and quantum software
and to involve more people to the field by working locally and/or
internationally.

[DMANET] DCC '20 special session: Computation over Compressed Data

Dear Colleague,

We are pleased to announce that the next *Data Compression Conference* (DCC
'20) will feature another special session on *Computation over Compressed
Data*. This session extends the special sessions at DCC '14, '16 and '18
and we invite you to submit interesting new results you may have both
on *compact
data structures* and on *compression-aware algorithms* (i.e., those that
run faster on compressible inputs).

The session will be an opportunity for members of our community to confer
with each other and reinforce our topics' relevance to the wider field of
data compression. Selected papers from the 2014, 2016 and 2018 sessions
were invited to special issues of the *Journal of Discrete Algorithms*
(published March 2017), *Algorithmica* (published July 2018) and *Information
and Computation* (in preparation), respectively. If we again receive
enough suitable papers, we will arrange another special issue of a
comparable journal for extended versions of some of them.

Papers are due by *November 1st*, 2019 (23:59 PST) and the conference will
take place from March 24th to 27th, in Snowbird, Utah (a premier ski resort
in the Rocky Mountains). The DCC submission process (see
http://www.cs.brandeis.edu/~dcc/Call.html) will allow authors to direct
their papers to the special session, but submissions will be otherwise
handled in the same way, will be subject to the same review process and, if
accepted, will be included in the same proceedings.

Best regards,
Travis Gagie and Simon Gog
(session co-chairs)

[DMANET] First Announcement: CG Challenge 2020

Dear colleagues,

We are happy to announce the Second Geometric Optimization Challenge, as
part of CG Week in Zurich, Switzerland, June 22-26, 2020.

As in the last year, the objective will be to compute good solutions to instances
of a difficult geometric optimization problem. The specific problem chosen for
the 2020 Challenge is the following:

Given a set S of n points in the plane. The objective is to compute a plane graph with
vertex set S (with each point in S having positive degree) that partitions the convex hull
of S into the smallest possible number of convex faces.

The complexity of this problem is still unknown, but approximation algorithms
have been proposed; e.g., see Christian Knauer and Andreas Spillner:
Approximation Algorithms for the Minimum Convex Partition Problem,
SWAT 2006, pp. 232-241.

Details of the competition (such as benchmark instances, data formats, and
rules for submission and evaluation) will be announced in coming weeks.

Contest opens 18:00 CEDT (noon, EDT), September 30, 2019.
Contest closes 24:00 (midnight, AoE), February 14, 2020.

The contributors with the most outstanding solutions will be recognized at the workshop at
CG Week and invited to present their results. In addition, it is planned that the top contributing
teams will be invited to submit their results to be included in a high-level publication; details
will be announced shortly, by the time the contest opens.

We are looking forward to your contributions and welcome questions and comments!

About HIS 2019
==============

Hybridization of intelligent systems is a promising research field of
modern artificial/computational intelligence concerned with the development
of the next generation of intelligent systems. A fundamental stimulus to
the investigations of Hybrid Intelligent Systems (HIS) is the awareness in
the academic communities that combined approaches will be necessary if the
remaining tough problems in artificial/computational intelligence are to be
solved. Recently, Hybrid Intelligent Systems are getting popular due to
their capabilities in handling several real world complexities involving
imprecision, uncertainty and vagueness. HIS'19 builds on the success of
last year's. HIS'19 is the 19th International conference that brings
together researchers, developers, practitioners, and users of soft
computing, computational intelligence, agents, logic programming, and
several other intelligent computing techniques. The aim of HIS'18 is to
serve as a forum to present current and future work as well as to exchange
research ideas in this field.

About IAS 2019
==============
Information assurance and security has become an important research issue
in the networked and distributed information sharing environments. Finding
effective ways to protect information systems, networks and sensitive data
within the critical information infrastructure is challenging even with the
most advanced technology and trained professionals. The 15th International
Conference on Information Assurance and Security (IAS) aims to bring
together researchers, practitioners, developers, and policy makers involved
in multiple disciplines of information security and assurance to exchange
ideas and to learn the latest development in this important field.

[DMANET] PhD position in probabilistic verification for synthetic biology and nanotechnology at Utah State University

A PhD position is available (fully paid for 4 years with the possibility of
extension) at the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department of Utah
State University. The earliest starting date is early January 2020. PhD
application information is available at:
https://engineering.usu.edu/ece/files/pdfs/ece-graduate-program-application-info.pdf

Abstract:
Synthetic biology and nanotechnology place increasing demands on design
methodologies to ensure dependable and robust operation. Consisting of
noisy and unreliable components, these complex systems have large and often
infinite state spaces that include extremely rare error states.
Probabilistic model checking techniques have demonstrated significant
potential in quantitatively analyzing such system models under extremely
low probability. Unfortunately, they generally require enumerating the
model's state space, which is computationally intractable or impossible.
Therefore, addressing these design challenges in emerging technologies
requires enhancing the applicability of probabilistic model checking.
Motivated by this problem, this project investigates an automated
probabilistic verification framework that integrates approximate
probabilistic model checking and counterexample-guided rare-event
simulation to improve the analysis accuracy and efficiency.

This multi-institution collaborative project focuses on verifying
infinite-state continuous-time Markov chain (CTMC) models with rare-event
properties. It addresses the scalability problem by first applying
property-guided and on-the-fly state truncation techniques to prune
unlikely states to obtain finite state representations that are amenable to
probabilistic model checking. In the case of false or indeterminate
verification results, probabilistic counterexamples are generated and
utilized to improve the accuracy of the state reductions. Furthermore, it
mines these critical counterexamples as automated guidance to improve the
quality and efficiency for rare-event probabilistic simulations. This
verification framework will be integrated within existing state-of-the-art
probabilistic model checking tools (e.g., the PRISM model checking tool),
and benchmarked on a wide range of real-world case studies in synthetic
biology and nanotechnology.
========================================

Project description:

The PhD position at Utah State University will be advancing and developing
efficient model abstraction and state space truncation techniques for the
infinite-state CTMC models. In particular, we are interested in
investigating:

- Model abstraction techniques on chemical reaction networks for synthetic
biology

- Approximation techniques for state space truncation and abstraction

- Property-guided state space pruning techniques

========================================

Qualifications:

Applicants must have a bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer
Engineering, or a related field. A master's degree is preferred. The
successful candidate is expected to demonstrate strong background and
interest in formal methods and algorithms, and preferably basic knowledge
of probability and random process. He/She should be confident in
independently developing academic software tools. Good writing and
presentation skills in English are important as well. Knowledge of
synthetic biology is preferred, but not required.

All submissions should be formatted using the styles and guidelines in
the IOS Press Instructions for Authors.

There are three categories of papers. Please indicate the category of
your paper when you submit the paper to Easychair.

Long papers

These are reports of well-developed and original research. An accepted
long paper scores well in terms of relevance, originality, technical
quality, significance, literature review, presentation, reviewer's
confidence, and overall evaluation. These should not exceed 10 pages.
A paper which is not accepted as a long paper may be recommended by
reviewers as a short paper.

Short papers

Authors can submit short descriptions of preliminary results or an
innovative idea. These papers should not exceed 6 pages.

Demo papers

Authors can submit short descriptions of a system. These papers should
not exceed 4 pages. Authors of demo papers should be willing to share
(a screencast of) the demo privately with the reviewers, if so
requested.

Double Submission

We welcome and encourage the submission of high quality, original
papers, which are not simultaneously submitted for publication
elsewhere except to JURISIN 2019. Papers being submitted both to JURIX

[DMANET] Developing Countries - Resources online - IFORS --- with new contributions

Dear Colleagues,

The aim of the IFORS Developing Countries Online Resources page is to offer the OR worker all publicly-available materials on the topic of OR for Development. It also aims to provide a venue for people who are working in the area to share their completed or in-process work, learn from others, and stimulate comments and discussions on the work. Regarding IFORS Developing Countries OR resources website, its regular updates - and your possible submission of "free" (not copyright protected) material, you might occasionally visit
http://ifors.org/developing_countries/index.php?title=Main_Page.

"Operational Research" (OR) is the discipline of applying advanced analytical methods to help make better decisions. By using techniques such as problem structuring methods and mathematical modelling to analyze complex situations, Operational Research gives executives the power to make more effective decisions and build more productive systems.

The International Federation of Operational Research Societies (IFORS; http://ifors.org/) is an almost 60-year old organization which is currently composed of 51 national societies.Regional Groups of IFORS are: ALIO (The Latin American Ibero Association on Operations Research), APORS (The Association of Asian-Pacific Operational Research Societies), EURO (The Association of European Operational Research Societies), NORAM (The Association of North American Operations Research Societies). IFORS conferences are taking place every three years; IFORS 2017 has been successfully celebrated in Quebec City, Canada.

Thank you very much for your attention.

With kind regards,
best wishes,
Luciana Buriol, Sue Merchant, Gerhard-Wilhelm Weber
