[DMANET] Developing Countries - Resources online --- IFORS

Dear Colleagues,

The aim of the IFORS Developing Countries On-Line Resources page is to
offer the OR worker all publicly-available materials on the topic of
OR for Development. It also aims to provide a venue for people who are
working in the area to share their completed or in-process work, learn
from others, and stimulate comments and discussions on the work.

Regarding IFORS Developing Countries OR resources website, its regular
updates - and your possible submission of "free" (not copyright protected)
material, you might occasionally visit

[ http://ifors.org/developing_countries/index.php?title=Main_Page | http://ifors.org/developing_countries/index.php?title=Main_Page ] .

"Operational Research" (OR) is the discipline of applying advanced
analytical methods to help make better decisions. By using techniques
such as problem structuring methods and mathematical modelling to
analyze complex situations, Operational Research gives executives the
power to make more effective decisions and build more productive
systems.

The International Federation of Operational Research Societies (IFORS;
[ http://ifors.org/ | http://ifors.org/ ] ) is an almost 60-year old organization which is
currently composed of 51 national societies.

Regional Groups of IFORS are:

ALIO (The Latin American Ibero Association on Operations Research),
APORS (The Association of Asian-Pacific Operational Research Societies),
EURO (The Association of European Operational Research Societies),
NORAM (The Association of North American Operations Research Societies).

IFORS conferences are taking place every three years; IFORS 2017 has been
successfully celebrated in Quebec City, Canada.

Thank you very much for your attention.

With kind regards,
best wishes,

Luciana Buriol, Sue Merchant, Gerhard-Wilhelm Weber

Call for Papers

Special Issue: Operations Research for Transportation and Sustainable
Development
Journal of Advanced Transportation (Hindawi-Wiley, Open Access)

https://www.hindawi.com/journals/jat/si/627526/cfp/
************************************************************
**************************************

Sustainable development is the core principle for meeting human development
goals while at the same time sustaining the ability of systems to produce,
extract, process, or manufacture the natural resources and services upon
which the economy and society depend.

Transportation produces water, noise, and air contamination, being a large
contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. These environmental shortcomings
can be mitigated by considering and integrating sustainable social,
environmental, and economic goals that impact and accelerate green and
supportable development. Furthermore, sustainable transportation can be
viewed and integrated as an essential ingredient in sustainable development
strategies. Components for evaluating transport sustainability include
particular transportation means used for road, water, or air transport; the
way they are organized, the source of energy, and the infrastructure used
to accommodate the transport. In this context, optimization plays a
relevant role. Methods from operations research have been extensively used
to successfully deal with many of these challenges.

This special issue aims at examining the current progress, challenges, and
approaches in transportation to achieve a sustainable development through
optimization. Thus, the scope of this issue covers high-quality original
research and review articles focusing on the use of operations research
techniques (mathematical programming, metaheuristics, simulation-based
approaches, game theory, etc.) to deal with transportation for promoting a
sustainable development, mitigating the negative environmental impacts, and
identifying main opportunities to accelerate the transition to
sustainability.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

* Sustainable maritime, road, rail, air, and multimodal transportation by
using operations research techniques
* Addressing resilience and disruptions in transportation systems through
optimization
* Operations research for traffic flow systems and sustainable development
* Sustainable passenger transportation based on operations research
* Operations research for transportation management in healthcare and
disaster response
* Algorithmic and decision support systems for sustainable development in
transportation
* Mathematical modeling and optimization for sustainable development in
transportation
* Green and environmental operations research approaches for real-world
applications

Authors can submit their manuscripts through the Manuscript Tracking System
at https://mts.hindawi.com/submit/journals/jat/otsd/.

[DMANET] CFP - IEEE TNSM Special Issue on Novel Techniques in Big Data Analytics for Management

IEEE Transactions on Network and Service Management

Special Issue on Novel Techniques in Big Data Analytics for Management

http://www.comsoc.org/tnsm/cfp/si-bdm

(Submissions due: 15 November 2018)

Cloud and network analytics can harness the immense stream of
operational data from clouds and networks, and can perform analytics
processing to improve reliability, configuration, performance, fault
and security management. In particular, we see a growing trend towards
using statistical analysis, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine
learning to improve operations and management of IT systems and
networks.

Research is therefore needed to understand and improve the potential
and suitability of Big Data analytics and AI in the context of systems
and network management. This will not only provide deeper
understanding and better decision making based on largely collected
and available operational data, but present opportunities for
improving data analysis algorithms and methods on aspects such as
accuracy and scalability, as well as demonstrate the benefits of
machine intelligence methods in system and network management and
control. Moreover, there is an opportunity to define novel platforms
that can harness the vast operational data and advanced data analysis
algorithms to drive management decisions in networks, data centers,
and clouds.

IEEE Transactions on Network and Service Management (IEEE TNSM) is a
premier journal for timely publication of archival research on the
management of networks, systems, services and applications. Following
the success of two recent TNSM special issues on Big Data Analytics
for Management in 2016 and 2018, this special issue will also focus on
recent, emerging approaches and technical solutions that can exploit
Big Data, analytics, and AI in management solutions. We welcome
submissions addressing the underlying challenges of Big Data Analytics
for Management and presenting novel techniques, experimental results,
or theoretical approaches motivated by management problems. Survey
papers that offer a perspective on related work and identify key
challenges for future research are also in the scope of the special
issue.

[DMANET] Call for Papers: EOM - 3rd International Workshop on Exploring Old Maps

3rd International Workshop on Exploring Old Maps (EOM 2018)
October 25 - 26, 2018 *** University of Kent
http://exploringoldmaps.informatik.uni-wuerzburg.de/

DESCRIPTION
Many libraries own an extensive collection of historical maps. Beside
their value as historical objects, these maps are an important source of
information for researchers in various scientific disciplines. This
ranges from the actual history of cartography and general history to the
geographic and social sciences. With the progressing digitisation of
libraries and archives, these maps become more easily available to a
larger public. In order to make the maps more accessible, information
describing the information content of the map is desirable. This would
enable more user-friendly interfaces, relevant queries of a database,
and automatic analyses.

TARGET AUDIENCE
The purpose of this workshop is to provide a forum for the communication
of results (which may appear elsewhere) that may be useful to the
community. Researchers and practitioners of all areas working on
unlocking the content of old maps are welcome to participate. We welcome
humanities scholars, developers, computer and information scientists as
well as librarians, archivists and curators. Submissions are welcome
from researchers at all career stages, as well as practitioners.

SCOPE OF INTEREST
Relevant topics are (but are not limited to) the following:
* Digital media, digitisation, curation of digital objects
* Design and application of algorithms for analysis and visualisation
methods
* Spatial analysis and applications of GIS concerning old maps
* Crowdsourcing, user research, citizen science, and public humanities
* Digital Libraries for old maps
* Visualisation of old maps
* Virtual Research Environments and Infrastructures

ABSTRACT SUBMISSION
Authors are invited to submit short papers for presentations, posters
and demonstrations.

The workshop will not have formally published proceedings. Therefore,
papers submitted to EOM 2018 may report on work in progress, be
submitted to other places, and they may even already have appeared or
been accepted elsewhere. We particularly welcome submissions that have
the potential to stimulate the collaboration between Humanities and
Computer Science. The reviewing process will mainly determine whether
the submitted material promises to fit into the scope of the workshop.
The Program Committee will decide about the acceptance of submissions
based on reviews and its mandate to create a balanced and varied program.

Encouraged topics include: History of maps; surveys. Digitisation,
metadata, archives. Topographic maps and georeferencing. Nontopographic
maps, such as metro maps.

The authors of the papers accepted for EOM 2018 will be invited to
submit the final versions of their papers for on-line publication in the
digital workshop booklet. Papers must be submitted via EasyChair. The
submitted material must not exceed 2 pages (excluding references, which
may take up a third page). All submissions must use the provided Word or
LaTeX template in DIN A4; when using LaTeX, follow the example of
bare_conf.tex. Abstracts for demonstrations should include descriptive
screenshots and a description of the system's functionalities.
