TOPIC DESCRIPTION:
In order to contribute to the Information Visualization research agenda, the BI Practice proposes a PhD position in its Sophia-Antipolis offices (Nice, France).
Recent trends in information and knowledge modeling are increasingly oriented towards graph based models that capture the relational structure between diverse types of entities. However, for large, strongly connected graphs it is difficult to visualize all information at once, as well as to decide how to zoom-into and explore the data without losing a general overview of the context. Filtering and aggregating information is an important line of research to overcome these drawbacks: efficient information visualization is just as much about knowing what to show than knowing what not to show. A first important research point is to test whether existing approaches for graph filtering / aggregation are suited to the knowledge structures that arise in intelligent business applications -- and whether their implementation allows for real-time interaction for visual analysis purposes. Second, it is worth exploring to what extent the success of these techniques is problem specific and!
how to develop more general and robust approaches. Finally, it is of interest to investigate entirely new approaches that build upon graphs as "models" for the filtering process. Such an approach, inspired by recent work in graph matching and graph querying, would make it possible to
take into account both the structure and the content of the knowledge bases, as well as to incorporate context and user information to customize the visual analysis experience.

CANDIDATE PROFILE:
- Last year student of M.Sc. or Engineering degree in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics or similar fields. Students with a strong academic record are favored.
- Interest for applied research and development. The candidate should be comfortable with theoretical / abstract work as well.
- Knowledge in Data Mining, Operations Research, Graph Theory and related fields. Ideal candidate has knowledge of algorithms for graph analysis and visualization, both theoretical and practical.
- Experience with programming languages (Java)
- Fluency in English (working language), other EU languages considered an advantage (in particular French)
- Excellent oral and written communication skills

Workshop topics and goals

Event based systems are considered as a basic building block for the
design of
large-scale architectures able to withstand the complexities of today's
heterogeneous and dynamic applications. Event based systems are successfully
employed in several application fields like distributed remote monitoring,
business intelligence, air traffic control or collaborative security.

The AlMoDEP workshop aims at fostering discussion on theoretical aspects of
distributed event processing among participants from different research areas
like algorithm theory, event processing, distributed systems and databases.

Topics of interest include (but are not limited to):
- Event-driven interaction models
- Complex event processing
- Stream processing
- Event-routing algorithms and protocols
- Algorithms for QoS-aware event distribution
- Event algebras, event schemas and type systems
- Languages for event correlation and patterns, streaming and continuous
queries, data fusion
- Models for static and dynamic environments

- Performance modeling and prediction based on analytic approaches

The workshop is looking for contributions addressing research, ongoing work,
ideas, concepts, and critical questions related to algorithmic and modelling

include both talks presenting novel contributions and two keynote
presentations.

The rapid advancement of communication technologies has revolutionized human's
lifestyles by providing the best convenience and flexibility ever in accessing the Internet
services and various types of personal communication applications. For instance, with the
emerging wireless communication technologies, healthcare industry now is offering high
quality services to patients with low costs through a variety of applications enabled by
wireless and information technologies. This is because these wireless-equip
ped healthcare
systems enable remote and continuous monitoring of patient's health status in both
residential settings and outdoor settings, where patients feel more comfortable and their
activities are less restricted. Early detection of emergency situations via wireless
communications makes it possible to provide timely first-aid and access patient's health
information in a pervasive manner, thereby improving reliability and efficiency of our health
care system. Although huge potential benefits are widely recognized, there are many
challenges especially with respect to security and privacy issues.

The objective of this special issue is to bring together state-of-the-art contributions on the
modeling, designing, implementation, deployment, and management of computer/network
security systems, architectures and protocols. We solicit contributions to the evaluation,
optimization, and/or enhancement of security mechanisms for current technologies as well
as new designs for efficient security and privacy solutions of emerging technologies, e.g.,

Call for Papers for a Special Issue of
IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems (TPDS)
on Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS)

IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems (TPDS) is seeking original
manuscripts for special Issue on Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), scheduled to be
published in the September issue of 2012. Although significant advances have been
achieved over the last decades in several fields of science and engineering, and especially
in the areas of distributed computing, sensing, data collection and internet-connection of
large scale object networks, it is mainly the coordination and tight link between
computational, virtual and physical resources that will drive the potential of having a
pervasive effect in the citizens everyday life, satisfying various needs and also creating new
opportunities for the introduction of services that will enhance the Quality of Life of the
society as a whole. Research advances in cyber-physical systems promise to transform
our world with systems that will far exceed those of today in terms of: effectiveness,
adaptability, autonomicity, energy efficiency, precision, reliability, safety, usability,
scalability, stability and user-centric applicability. Moreover, recently the Sensor Web
concept came into foreground, aiming at combining distributed sensing with the ubiquitous
connectivity and accessibility of the web, therefore facilitating the close interaction of digital
world with physical world.

Cyber-physical systems find direct applicability in a wide range of areas and disciplines,
including for instance (but not limited to):
a) Smart Grid technologies:
that aim at facilitating a reliable and efficient delivery of electricity to consumers using
two-way digital communications and security technologies, which allows utility providers
and consumers to constantly monitor and control the delivery network as well as electricity
consumption for the purpose of energy saving, cost reduction, and reliability enhancement;
b) Wireless sensing, monitoring and networking:
to enable distributed monitoring systems of numerous smart sensors and actuators,
mobile devices, RFIDs, robots etc., which revolutionize a variety of application areas with
unprecedented density, fidelity, and scalability of environment instrumentation;
c) Vehicular cyber-physical systems and intelligent transportation systems:
that integrate computing, communication, and storage capabilities with monitoring and
control of vehicles in the physical world to deal with the grand challenges of safe, green,
and efficient transportation.

The technical challenges are significant, and of high research and practical importance,
mainly stemming from the fact that traditionally different groups of scientists deal with this
setting without much interaction, using disjoint sets of techniques. Towards merging the
two main and different features of those systems, that of information-centric character and
node-centric physical world connectivity, well-defined analytical models, methodologies and
experimental validations are required of how to build such systems capable of coping with
the entire chain of operations and orchestrating the various parts together in a flexible,
efficient and economic way.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to the following:
* Architectural framework for distributed CPS
* Resource Management in large scale CPS
* Smart Grid Technologies
* Security, privacy, scalability, and reliability issues
* Design and cross-layer optimizations
* Vehicular CPS and intelligent transportation systems

* Distributed and scalable monitoring systems
* Evaluations and filed trials of CPS and solutions

[DMANET] Post-Doctoral Position in Supply Chain Management and Logistics

HEC Management School – University of Liège (HEC-ULg) invites applications
for a post-doctoral position in Supply Chain Management and Logistics.

The appointment will be for one calendar year, starting on October 1, 2011,

Prerequisites for qualification are a Ph.D. in Supply Chain Management, in
Logistics, in Operations Research, or in a related field. The candidate

The journal Computability invites submission of full papers of highest
quality on all research topics related to computability.

Computability accepts only submissions of original research papers that
have not been published previously and that are not currently submitted
elsewhere. Full versions of papers that have already been published in
conference proceedings are eligible only if the conference version is
clearly cited and the full version enhances the conference version
significantly.

Authors are requested to submit PDF manuscripts electronically via the
online submission system. Authors can indicate non-binding wishes
regarding Editorial Board Members who should handle their submission.
Final versions of accepted papers have to be prepared using the journal
style file and they need to be submitted together with all source files.

Authors submitting a manuscript do so on the understanding that they

Manuscripts are solicited for a special issue in the journal
“Theoretical Computer Science” (TCS) on “Exact & Parameterized
Computation â€" Moderately Exponential & Parameterized Approximation”

The design and analysis of Exact Algorithms for NP-hard Problems with
Moderately Exponential Worst-Case Running-Times has become a very active
area in Theoretical Computer Science and Combinatorial Optimization and
motivates intensive research in both domains. On the other hand,
Moderately Exponential & Parameterized Approximation has been developed
quite recently as a research programme aiming at bringing together Exact
Computation and Polynomial Approximation and at remedying to the numerous
inapproximability results, the Polynomial Approximation paradigm suffers.

With this Special Issue, we wish to foster research in the areas of Exact
Computation and Moderately Exponential Approximation as well as to their
intersection by exposing new results and directions for further research
and to contribute to the development of further scientific links between
them.

Potential topics include (but are not limited to) the following:
• Moderately exponential algorithms for NP-hard problems
• Parameterized algorithms
• New tools for exact computation
• Hardness in fixed parameter computation

The Laboratoire d'Analyse et Modelisation de Systemes pour
l'Aide a la Decision (LAMSADE, head Vangelis Th. Paschos) of
the University Paris-Dauphine opens, in September 2012, a
tenure-track assistant professor's position with associated
CNRS Chair, on a profile:

"Efficient solution of hard Combinatorial Optimization problems: new
models concepts and tools"

which is one of the axes of the research project
"Algorithms with Performance Guarantees" (AGaPe) within the
LAMSADE.

Successful candidate will be working mainly on "Exact computation with
provably time complexity upper bounds" on "Moderately exponential time
approximation algorithms" and on "Parameterized algorithms".

We seek for excellent candidates having strong skills in the
aforementioned fields. Other themes where outstanding applications will
also be considered are:
Polynomial approximation,
On-line computation,
Reoptimization

Applicants should demonstrate their abilities in conducting original

The Laboratoire d'Analyse et Modelisation de Systemes pour
l'Aide a la Decision (LAMSADE, head Vangelis Th. Paschos) of
the University Paris-Dauphine opens, in September 2012, a
tenure-track assistant professor's position with associated
CNRS Chair, on a profile:

"Efficient solution of hard Combinatorial Optimization problems: new
models concepts and tools"

which is one of the axes of the research project
"Algorithms with Performance Guarantees" (AGaPe) within the
LAMSADE.

Successful candidate will be working mainly on "Exact computation with
provably time complexity upper bounds" on "Moderately exponential time
approximation algorithms" and on "Parameterized algorithms".

We seek for excellent candidates having strong skills in the
aforementioned fields. Other themes where outstanding applications will
also be considered are:
Polynomial approximation,
On-line computation,
Reoptimization
Algorithmic games.

Applicants should demonstrate their abilities in conducting original
top-level research. An outstanding doctoral degree and scientific
publication record at the international level are prerequisites for this

Aims and Scope

Computability is the journal of the Association Computability in Europe
and it is published by IOS Press in Amsterdam.

The journal Computability is a peer reviewed international journal that
is devoted to publishing original research of highest quality, which is
centered around the topic of computability.

The subject is understood from a multidisciplinary perspective,
recapturing the spirit of Alan Turing (1912-1954) by linking theoretical

Submission Guidelines

The journal Computability invites submission of full papers of highest
quality on all research topics related to computability.

Computability accepts only submissions of original research papers that
have not been published previously and that are not currently submitted
elsewhere. Full versions of papers that have already been published in
conference proceedings are eligible only if the conference version is
clearly cited and the full version enhances the conference version
significantly.

Authors are requested to submit PDF manuscripts electronically via the
online submission system. Authors can indicate non-binding wishes
regarding Editorial Board Members who should handle their submission.
Final versions of accepted papers have to be prepared using the journal
style file and they need to be submitted together with all source files.

Authors submitting a manuscript do so on the understanding that they
have read and agreed to the terms of the IOS Press Author Copyright

Sensor networks and sensor-based systems support many applications today on the ground. Underwater operations and applications are quite limited by comparison. Most applications refer to remotely controlled submersibles and wide-area data collection systems at a coarse granularity. Underwater sensor networks have many potential applications such a seismic imaging of undersea oil fields as a representative application. Oceanographic research is also based on the advances in underwater data collection systems.

There are specific technical aspects to realize underwater applications which can not be borrowed from the ground-based sensors net research. Radio is not suitable for underwater systems because of extremely limited propagation. Acoustic telemetry could be used in underwater communication; however off-the-shelf acoustic modems are not recommended for underwater sensor networks with hundreds of nodes because they were designed for long-range and expensive. As the speed of light (radio) is five orders of magnitude higher than the speed of sound, there are fundamental implications of time synchronization and propagation delays for localization. Additionally, existing communication protocols are not designed to deal with long sleep times and they can not shut down and quickly restart.

The International Workshop on Marine Sensors and Systems, MarSS, brings together practitioners and researchers for discussion and work on the emerging aspects pertaining to the new mechanisms for underwater sensor networks and applications.
