[DMANET] Postdoc vacancy in Explainable Reinforcement Learning Utrecht University Netherlands

Postdoc vacancy in Explainable Reinforcement Learning Utrecht University Netherlands
Join us at Utrecht University and contribute to the development of Explainable Reinforcement Learning models for the energy-mobility-housing nexus!

Job description

Current advancements in energy technology has led to an increase in the use of photovoltaic panels in residential areas, and an increasing use of electric cars. Communities can now benefit from the energy produced by their own photovoltaic panels for daily energy use, as well as for charging their electric vehicles. However, it remains a challenge to manage the energy such that individuals maximize their use of energy in a just and fair manner.

In this research project, you will be working towards developing Reinforcement Learning (RL) models that intelligently manage the charging/discharging of electric vehicles in the energy-mobility-housing nexus. RL models, however, are often seen as "black-boxes". To enhance transparency, you will design methods to reveal the decision-making structure of the models using Explainable Reinforcement Learning (XRL). This will allow for an in-detail analysis of the level of justness and fairness achieved with the proposed RL. For example, with XRL, you will quantify the distribution of benefits and costs that the RL decision strategy proposes across individuals. You will also identify driving factors and conditions that contribute to the decisions proposed by the RL model.

This Postdoc position is part of a Dutch NWO research project. Within the project, you will have the opportunity to collaborate with several Dutch universities and researchers from multi-disciplinary backgrounds, and several industrial partners.

Qualifications
We are looking for an enthusiastic new colleague who meets the following criteria:

You hold a PhD degree in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics or Operations Research, or you are within a few months from defending your PhD;
You are familiar with Reinforcement Learning, Explainable Reinforcement Learning (XRL), fairness in Reinforcement Learning models.
Familiarity with the topics of charging schemes for electric vehicles, electric grids, and a just energy transition is a plus;
You have demonstrated programming skills (familiarity with Python is a plus);
You are willing to work in a multi-disciplinary team with researchers, and with diverse teams of stakeholders;
You possess collaboration and communication skills with an independent outlook in defining and solving research problems;
You are proficient in English.

Offer
* A Postdoc position for 2 years;
* A full-time gross salary ranging from ;
* 8% holiday bonus and 8.3% end-of-year bonus;
* A pension scheme, partially paid parental leave, and flexible employment conditions based on the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities

Deadline: 30th of April 2025

[DMANET] PhD position at Inria Lille, team LINKS

Dear all,

The LINKS team at Inria Lille is currently seeking PhD candidates to work on
the topic of "Efficient enumeration via edits". More information on the PhD
subject and the context follows. The deadline to apply is April 23.

Please circulate this offer to potential candidates and colleagues who are
looking for PhD positions (and don't hesitate to contact us to inquire
more).

PhD topic.

We are interested in designing efficient *enumeration algorithms*, i.e.,
algorithms that outputs the solutions to a problem one after another. Such
algorithms are typically used when the number of solutions is large. For this
thesis, we will focus on contexts in which the objects themselves to be
enumerated have a large size, and to tackle this we propose a new enumeration
model that we call "by edits", where the next item to be enumerated is not
written from scratch, but instead one wants to output the description of how to
obtain this item from the previous one. The topic is about designing
efficient algorithms for problems arising from automata theory, graph
theory, and databases. More details can be found here:
<https://phd.cristal.univ-lille.fr/index.cgi/b4eb3bf2291943c7a369595848c612d8/pdf>

Advisors and context.

The PhD will be carried out in LINKS, which is a joint research team
between Inria Lille, the University of Lille, and the CRIStAL
laboratory. The LINKS team offers a dynamic environment for research in
this area and a friendly atmosphere. The PhD will be co-supervised by
Antoine Amarilli (https://a3nm.net/) and Mikaël Monet
(https://mikael-monet.net/). Applications are open until April 23, and
the contract would start in fall 2025.

Candidates.

Candidates to this PhD proposal should have a good background in the
following areas of computer science: discrete mathematics, complexity
theory, formal languages, logic, and databases.

To apply, simply email us at mikael.monet@inria.fr and a3nm@a3nm.net !

Best regards,
Antoine Amarilli and Mikaël Monet

[DMANET] Call for papers "The 1st International Workshop on Computational Aspects of Energy Flexibility"

The 1st International Workshop on Computational Aspects of Energy
Flexibility (CAEF)
Rotterdam, the Netherlands, June 17, 2025
Co-located with ACM E-Energy 2025
https://sites.google.com/utwente.nl/caef2025

*Call for papers*

Flexibility in electricity demand and supply is used to address
challenges in markets, grid congestion, reducing CO2 emissions, etc. The
amount of flexibility rapidly increases due to the electrification of
transport and heating. Many of the new devices introduced by the
electrification have a communication interface and implement a
flexibility interface. To efficiently make use of this flexibility, it
needs to be aggregated and/or coordinated. This requires advances in
modeling of flexibility, distributed optimization of flexibility,
computational-aware flexibility markets, and online optimization of
flexibility.  The use of flexibility itself introduces new challenges
related to privacy, cybersecurity, and robustness.

We invite papers that address computational challenges related to
flexibility. Topics of interest include (but are not limited to):

- Mathematical modeling of flexibility: (dis)aggregation of flexibility,
quantifying flexibility, prediction of flexibility, generation of
flexibility data;
- Communication of flexibility: flexibility protocols and
standardization, privacy preserving communication of flexibility,
robustness of ICT systems for flexibility, cybersecurity of demand-side
management;
- Algorithms for using flexibility: algorithms for flexibility
coordination, distributed optimization, performance guarantees of
algorithms, computational efficiency, online algorithms,
learning-augmented algorithms;
- Computational aspects of flexibility-markets: computation-aware
flexibility market design, computational efficiency, algorithms for
computing equilibria.

*Submission*

All submissions must be at most 6 pages (including references, figures,
and appendices), formatted in 9-point ACM double-column format. Papers
should present original work, not published, accepted or under review
for any other publication.

Accepted papers will appear in ACM digital library.

CALL FOR PAPERS

***********************************************************

Workshop on Evolutionary Computation and Decision Making (EC+DM) at the Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference 2025 (GECCO 2025)

https://sites.exeter.ac.uk/ecmcdm/

Solving real-world optimisation problems typically involve an expert or decision-maker. Decision making tools have been found to be useful in several such applications e.g., health care, education, environment, transportation, business, and production. In recent years, there has also been growing interest in merging Evolutionary Computation (EC) and decision-making techniques for several applications. This has raised amongst others the need to account for explainability, fairness, ethics and privacy aspects in optimisation and decision-making. This workshop will showcase research that is both at the interface of EC and decision making. The workshop on Evolutionary Computation and Decision Making (EC + DM) to be held in GECCO 2025 aims to promote research on theory and applications in the field. Topics of interest include:

* Interactive multiobjective optimisation or decision-maker in the loop
* Visualisation to support DM in EC
* Aggregation/trade-off operators & algorithms to integrate decision maker preferences
* Fuzzy logic-based DM techniques
* Bayesian and other DM techniques
* Interactive multiobjective optimisation for (computationally) expensive problems
* Using surrogates (or metamodels) in DM
* Hybridisation of EC and DM
* Scalability in EC and DM
* DM and machine learning
* DM in a big data context
* DM in real-world applications
* Use of psychological tools to aid the decision-maker
* Fairness, ethics and societal considerations in EC and DM
* Explainability in EC and DM
* Accounting for trust and security in EC and DM

[DMANET] VSTTE 2025: First Call for Papers

VSTTE 2025
17th International Conference on Verified Software: Theories, Tools, and Experiments
October 06-07, 2025, Menlo Park, California, USA
Co-located with Formal Methods in Computer-Aided Design 2025 (FMCAD 2025<https://fmcad.org/FMCAD25/>)
Key Information
Conference Website: https://systemf.epfl.ch/etc/vstte2025/
Paper submission Deadline: July 18th AoE
This year, VSTTE accepts both (short and long) regular papers to be included in post-conference proceedings and work-in-progress (presentation only) papers.
Overview
The goal of the VSTTE conference series is to advance the state of the art in the science and technology of software verification, through the interaction of theory development, tool evolution, and experimental validation.
The Verified Software Initiative (VSI), spearheaded by Tony Hoare and Jayadev Misra, is an ambitious research program for making large-scale verified software a practical reality. The International Conference on Verified Software: Theories, Tools and Experiments (VSTTE) is the main forum for advancing the initiative. VSTTE brings together experts spanning the spectrum of software verification in order to foster international collaboration on the critical research challenges. The theoretical work includes semantic foundations and logics for specification and verification, and verification algorithms and methodologies. The tools cover specification and annotation languages, program analyzers, model checkers, interactive verifiers and proof checkers, automated theorem provers and SAT/SMT solvers, and integrated verification environments. The experimental work drives the research agenda for theory and tools by taking on significant specification/verification exercises covering hardware, operating systems, compilers, computer security, parallel computing, and cyber-physical systems.
Call for papers and work-in-progress presentations
VSTTE 2025 welcomes submissions describing significant advances in the production of verified software, i.e. software that has been proved to meet its functional specifications. Submissions of theoretical, practical, and experimental contributions are equally encouraged, including those that focus on specific problems or problem domains. We are especially interested in submissions describing large-scale verification efforts that involve collaboration, theory unification, tool integration, and formalized domain knowledge. We also welcome papers describing novel experiments and case studies evaluating verification techniques and technologies.
In addition to regular papers, we welcome submissions on in-progress verified software projects to a "work-in-progress (presentation-only)" track. Work-in-progress contributions will not appear in the post-proceedings of the conference. Submissions describing work of interest to the software verification community, but that could not be accepted for publication in the conference proceedings, may be invited to the "work-in-progress (presentation-only)" track, on a case-by-case basis.
Topics of interest for this conference include, but are not limited to, requirements modeling, specification languages, specification/verification/certification case studies, formal calculi, software design methods, automatic code generation, refinement methodologies, compositional analysis, verification tools (e.g., static analysis, dynamic analysis, model checking, theorem proving, satisfiability), tool integration, benchmarks, challenge problems, and integrated verification environments.
Submissions
VSTTE 2025 accepts both long (limited to 16 pages, excluding references) and short (limited to 10 pages, excluding references) paper submissions. Short submissions also cover "verification pearls" describing an elegant proof or proof technique. Submitted research papers and system descriptions must be original and not submitted for publication elsewhere.
Papers may be submitted via EasyChair at the VSTTE 2025 conference submission page<https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=vstte25>. The use of LaTeX and the Springer LNCS class files<https://www.springer.com/gp/computer-science/lncs/conference-proceedings-guidelines> is strongly encouraged. Submissions that are not in the proper format or are too long will not be considered.
Accepted regular-track papers will be included in the post-conference proceedings of VSTTE 2025, which will be published as a LNCS volume by Springer-Verlag. Authors of those papers will have to transfer copyright of their contribution to Springer-Verlag.

IJCAI'25 program chairs, we have therefore instituted a process by which
authors can submit revised versions of such rejected papers directly to
ICLP'25. Authors must submit a cover letter explaining how they have
addressed the critical issues raised by IJCAI'25 reviewers before
submitting their revised paper to the IJCAI Fast Track of ICLP'25. The
submission will then enter the "revision" phase and be considered for
publication in TPLP.

- International Symposium on Principles and Practice of Declarative
Programming (PPDP 2025)

- International Symposium on Logic-based Program Synthesis and
Transformation (LOPSTR 2025)

*SUBMISSION DETAILS*

All submissions must be written in English. Papers accepted at ICLP may
appear either in

- The journal Theory and Practice of Logic Programming (TPLP) published
by Cambridge University Press. TPLP format is described at:
https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/theory-and-practice-of-logic-programming/information/author-instructions/preparing-your-materials

- The ICLP 2025 Technical Communication Proceedings published by
Electronic Proceedings in Theoretical Computer Science (EPTCS). EPTCS
format is described at: http://style.eptcs.org

Submissions may have one of two forms:

1) Regular papers and IJCAI Fast Track papers are at most 14 pages in TPLP
format, including references. Accepted regular and IJCAI Fast Track papers
will be published in a special issue of TPLP. IJCAI Fast Track papers must
be accompanied by a PDF cover letter detailing:

- The improvements made to the paper compared to the previous
(IJCAI'25) submission, including clarifications on any perceived errors in
the reviewers' assessments, if applicable

- The paper ID of the IJCAI'25 submission

- The authors listed on the IJCAI'25 submission

- The title of the IJCAI'25 submission

- The original PDF submitted to IJCAI'25

- The IJCAI'25 reviews, including scores and text evaluations

The authors of IJCAI Fast Track papers must explicitly give consent for
IJCAI'25 to share all submitted information with ICLP'25 to verify its
accuracy. ICLP'25 may summarily reject papers for several reasons,
including submissions that (a) are outside the thematic scope of ICLP, (b)
inaccurately disclosed required information, or (c) omitted original
authors without justification.

Regular papers that are not (provisionally) accepted for TPLP may be
invited to the Technical Communication Proceedings of ICLP'25. The authors
can choose to convert a regular paper accepted for the Technical
Communication Proceedings into an extended abstract (2 or 3 pages in EPTCS
format), which should allow for submitting a long paper version elsewhere.

2) Technical Communication (TC) papers are at most 12 pages in EPTCS
format, excluding references. Accepted TC papers will be published in the
Technical Communication Proceedings.

Submissions will be made via EasyChair, following the link
https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=iclp25

All papers must describe original, previously unpublished research, and
must not simultaneously be submitted for publication elsewhere. These
restrictions do not apply to Recently Published Research Track submissions
as well as previously accepted workshop papers with a limited audience
and/or without archival proceedings.

All accepted papers will be presented during the conference. Authors of
accepted papers will be automatically included in the list of ALP members,
who will receive quarterly updates from the Logic Programming Newsletter at
no cost.

*VENUE*

ICLP'25 will be held on the campus of the University of Calabria in Rende,
