Summer School on Discrete Optimization and Network Flows, June 24-26, nearby Berlin

On behalf of the Research Training Group "Methods for Discrete Structures"

Summer School on Discrete Optimization and Network Flows

will be held from June 24 to 26, 2011, in the vicinity of Berlin (an organized transport will depart from Berlin in the evening of June 23 and arrive back in Berlin in the morning of June 27). The purpose of the summer school is to give an introductory overview of several areas of discrete optimization with a special focus on network flows, to present new research trends, and to give students working in this or related fields the opportunity to meet and to get to know each other.

The school is addressed to advanced undergraduate students, graduate students, and young postdocs in Mathematics or Computer Science who are interested in optimization, network flows and related areas. Basic knowledge in combinatorial optimization and linear programming is assumed. Students of other fields are welcome to apply if they have this prerequisite knowledge.

The program will be presented by the following five lecturers:

Friedrich Eisenbrand, EPFL
Network design in Euclidean metrics

S. Thomas McCormick, UBC
Parametric flow problems

James B. Orlin, MIT
Fast algorithms for the maximum flow problem

Martin Skutella, TU Berlin
Network flows over time

David P. Williamson, Cornell University
Generalized flows

The abstracts of the lectures and a more detailed program will be available at

soon. In addition to the lectures, exercises will be solved in small groups with solution sessions in the evenings. The language of the school is English.

The summer school will take place at Döllnsee, a picturesque lake in a natural reserve 60 km northeast of Berlin. The costs per participant are EURO 90 and include transportation between Döllnsee and Berlin and full board during the summer school.

The number of participants is limited to about 25. Applications can be submitted using the form on the summer school website until April 30, 2011.
