PhD Scholarship in Operations Research
University of Newcastle, Australia
School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences

Project topic
The topic of the PhD dissertation will on developing optimization tools and solution methodologies for the Aircraft Landing Problem, where the focus is on exact algorithms.

Summary
The Aircraft Landing Problem (ALP) is an important class of scheduling problems. Optimal solution of an ALP has applications in the areas of transportation and health care delivery, providing significant benefits to systems experiencing long delays. Available solution methodologies for the ALP cannot solve very large size instances of the problem. This PhD project will build the optimization tools to advance current solution methodologies for the ALP.

Scholarship: a stipend of $26,682 per annum (2017 rate). Successful international applicants will have the tuition fees waived for the duration of the scholarship. For more on the available scholarships at the University of Newcastle see https://www.newcastle.edu.au/research-and-innovation/graduate-research/phd-and-research-degrees/scholarships

How to apply: Interested applicants are encouraged to send their expression of interest including transcripts and CV to Dr Amir Salehipour at a.salehipour@newcastle.edu.au before 10 January 2017.

Eligibility: Honors or Masters degree in Industrial Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Sciences or related fields. Applicants are expected to have a strong understanding of mathematical programming, and exact and heuristic algorithms. Having a good grasp of meta-heuristic algorithms is an advantage. Experience in programming in C++, and Python as well as working with the solver CPLEX/Gurobi is a must.
The applications are considered as soon as they are received.
