from Marek Chrobak: Faculty openings at University of California, Riverside

Our Bourns College of Engineering at UCR is expected to have three faculty openings as part of the PDEF program for new PhD graduates (see below). The program's main goal is to increase the diversity among the college faculty. Although this program emphasizes certain targeted areas of engineering, other areas (including theoretical computer science) will be considered as well. All candidates who are eligible for this program are strongly encouraged to apply.

=============================================

The Provost's Diversity in Engineering Fellows (PDEF) program, a new initiative created in collaboration with the University of California Office of the President, aims to support emerging scholars as they transition into the professoriate. We invite applications for up to three tenure-track faculty positions beginning the 2017/2018 academic year. Full consideration will be given to applications received beginning as early as January 6, 2017.

Program Benefits

Through the program, successful candidates will receive a tenure-track faculty position and funding for up to a year of research fellowship prior to joining the faculty at UCR. The tenure clock will be delayed during the research fellowship so that upon the candidate's arrival, he/she will still have the full seven years to attain tenure.
In addition, PDEF supports professional development and research, covering travel to conferences and resources that enable the candidate to use research facilities at UCR or elsewhere. Candidates also receive training resourcesincluding guidance in teaching skills, research ethics, grant writing, and time management.

Program Requirements

Qualified candidates must have a proven academic track-record, as well as a demonstrated commitment to diversity such as engagement with diverse populations of students, role modeling, and mentoring. They must have published research of the highest quality and demonstrate exceptional promise for, or a proven record of, independent high quality research and teaching, securing external funding, collaborating across disciplines, and working successfully to benefit a diverse student body. Ph.D. candidates at the final stages of their student career or very recent graduates are encouraged to apply.

Research Areas for Hiring

PDEF is part of a broader hiring initiative in which UC Riverside is implementing a major expansion of its faculty and investing in state-of-the-art research facilities to support their work. This expansion will build critical mass in 34 vital and emerging fields of scholarship, foster truly cross-disciplinary work, and further diversify the faculty at one of American's most diverse universities.
