[DMANET] CFP: ECADA 2013 Workshop

- CALL FOR PAPERS - CALL FOR PAPERS -
(apologies for cross-posting)

THIRD ANNUAL WORKSHOP ON
Evolutionary Computation for the Automated Design of Algorithms (ECADA-2013)

to be held as part of the

2013 Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference (GECCO-2013)
July 06-10, Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Organized by ACM SIGEVO
http://www.sigevo.org/gecco-2013/

PAPER SUBMISSION DEADLINE FOR WORKSHOP: March 28th, 2013

Workshop URL: http://homepages.dcc.ufmg.br/~glpappa/workshop.html

----------------------------------------------------------
Although most evolutionary computation techniques are designed to
generate specific solutions to a given instance of a problem, some of
these techniques can be explored to solve more generic problems. The
main objective of this workshop is to discuss evolutionary computation
methods for the generation of such generic algorithms and/or heuristics.

Since these methods, known as hyper-heuristics, operate at a higher
level of abstraction, they have the advantage of producing algorithms
which can be applied to a class of problems, rather than a solution
specifically produced for a single instance of the problem. The
application for these methods include data mining, machine learning,
optimization, bioinformatics, image processing, economics etc.

The workshop welcomes original submissions on all aspects of
evolutionary computation for designing generic algorithms and
heuristics, which include (but are not limited to) the following
topics and themes:

- Evolutionary algorithms for designing generic combinatorial
optimization algorithms or heuristics
- Evolutionary algorithms for designing generic machine learning
algorithms or heuristics
- Evolutionary algorithms for designing generic function optimizers
- Evolutionary algorithms for designing generic algorithms or heuristics
for bioinformatics
- (Meta-level) evolutionary algorithms for designing other (base-level)
evolutionary algorithms
- Empirical comparison of different hyper-heuristics
- Theoretical analyses of hyper-heuristics
- Automatic selection of algorithmic building blocks as a pre-processing
step for the use of hyper-heuristics
- Analysis of the trade-off between generality and effectiveness of
different heuristics, algorithms or heuristics produced by hyper-heuristics
- Real-world applications of hyper-heuristics

[DMANET] Second CFP: Springer CASM Special Issue on Modeling Large-scale Communication Networks (D/Line: March 15, 2013)

<Apologies if you receive multiple posts>

This special issue of Springer Complex Adaptive Systems Modeling (CASM)
intends to publish high quality original research as well as review articles
on case studies, models and methods for the modeling and simulation of
large-scale computer communication networks using either of the following
two approaches:
- Complex networks (Such as modeled, simulated or analyzed using tools
such as Gephi, Network Workbench, Visone, Cytoscape, Pajek and others).
- Agent-based models (such as based on NetLogo, Repast, Mason, Swarm
and others)

Modern computer communication networks often involve a large number of
interacting and adapting entities or nodes. These nodes can be modeled as
agents interacting with each other as well as adapting over time as well as
space. While a large body of literature exists on the modeling and
simulation of computer networks, most current models do not cater for this
emergent complex nature of networks even though such networks can be better
represented as Complex Adaptive Systems (CAS), a special class of complex
systems. Meanwhile, a large and multidisciplinary CAS community has evolved
well-developed methods and techniques for the modeling and simulation of CAS
including the use of techniques such as complex networks and Agent-based
Modeling; both of which have been demonstrated to be effective approaches
for the modeling of different aspects of CAS.
Recent work has demonstrated the utility of using either of these approaches
for the modeling of computer communication networks. This special issue of
CASM aims to consolidate such research on the use of these CAS modeling
techniques in the modeling of modern large-scale Complex communication
networks or Complex Adaptive COmmunicatiOn Networks and EnvironmentS
(CACOONS).

Papers submitted to the special issue conform to the scope of the journal
CASM and include a detailed cover letter as outlined here:
http://www.casmodeling.com/about

Topics of interest include areas such as but not limited to the
agent-based/complex network-based modeling and Simulation of:
- Multiagent systems
- Cognitive Sensor Networks
- Wireless Sensor Networks
- Sensor Actuator Networks
- Cloud computing infra-structures
- Internet of Things
- Service-oriented architectures
- Pervasive/Mobile Computing
- Peer-to-peer networks

Deadline: March, 15, 2012
First Decision: Typically within 5 weeks of submission

Systems
Arlington, Texas, USA, June 29 - July 3, 2013

http://www.orgs.ttu.edu/debs2013/

The scope of the ACM International Conference on Distributed Event-Based
Systems covers all topics relevant to event-based computing ranging from
those discussed in related disciplines (e.g. software systems,
distributed systems, data management, dependability, knowledge
management, networking, programming languages, security and software
engineering), to domain-specific topics of event-based computing (e.g.
real-time analytics, mobile computing, social networking, pervasive and
ubiquitous computing, sensors networks, user interfaces, big data
processing, spatio-temporal processing, Cloud computing, the internet of
things, peer-to-peer computing and embedded systems), to
enterprise-related topics (e.g. complex event detection, enterprise
application integration, real-time enterprises and web services). Topics
addressed by the conference papers may include (but are not limited to)
models, architectures and paradigms of event-based systems, middleware
systems and frameworks, and applications, experiences and requirements.

DEBS 2013 will host a one-day, multi-track tutorial program to provide
independent instruction on topics related to event-based computing, both
fitting for the research audience and to an industrial audience. We
solicit both long (3 hours) and short (1.5 hours) tutorials. A tutorial
may cover a wide scope of topics ranging from practical techniques and
guidelines over standards to theoretical work. Please note that no
marketing or product specific tutorials will be accepted. Tutorial
levels may be introductory, intermediate, or advanced. Topics of broad
interest are preferred.

A tutorial proposal of 1-3 pages should include:

the proposed title,
a structured description of the contents,
the assumed background of attendees, and
the name, affiliation, contact information (email and phone) and
brief biography of the speaker(s).

Accepted Proposals

Proposers of accepted tutorials are given the opportunity to submit a
tutorial paper. The content of a tutorial paper must be on the material
covered by the tutorial and must not exceed 10 pages. Submitted tutorial
papers will be reviewed prior to publication, and may be rejected for
publication if either the technical quality of the paper is insufficient
or the content of the paper does not match the content of the tutorial.

[DMANET] Call for Prize Nomination: Prize for Innovation in Distributed Computing

**************************************************************************

Call for Prize Nomination
Prize for Innovation in Distributed Computing

Awarded by the Colloquium on Structural Information and
Communication Complexity (SIROCCO)

**************************************************************************

The Prize for Innovation In Distributed Computing was established to
recognize individuals whose research contributions expanded the collective
investigative horizon in SIROCCO's area of interest. That is, they formulated
new problems, or identified new research areas, that were at the time of
their introduction unorthodox and outside the mainstream, but later attracted
the interest of SIROCCO's community.

This community is interested in the relationships between information and
efficiency in decentralized computing. The prize recognizes originality,
innovation, and creativity -- the qualities that reflect the spirit of the
SIROCCO conference.

(SIROCCO 2013 is going to be held on July 1–3, 2013, Ischia, Italy; papers
submission deadline is April 21st).

The prize is presented at the annual meeting of the SIROCCO conference, but
may not necessarily be awarded every year.

Passed prize winners are Nicola Santoro, Jean-Claude Bermond, David Peleg,
and Roger Wattenhofer.

Eligibility

The following conditions must be met by the nominees to be eligible for the
prize.

(1) The original innovative contribution was introduced by the nominee(s) for
the first time in a publication at least five years before the nomination
deadline, and the publication must have appeared in a conference proceedings
or a scientific journal.

(2) At least one paper (co)authored by the nominee(s), either the original
paper, or a paper directly related to the innovative contribution, must have
appeared in SIROCCO proceedings.

Past SIROCCO papers and authors can be found at indexing sites, e.g. Google
Scholar or
http://www.informatik.uni-trier.de/~ley/db/conf/sirocco/index.html.

Selection process

The prize winners are selected by the Award Committee composed of the current
Steering Committee (SC) Chair of the SIROCCO conference, the PC chairs,
including co-chairs, of the three SIROCCO conferences immediately preceding
the nominations deadline, plus one additional member of the Advisory Board,
selected by the Steering Committee for the current year.

In 2013, the Award Committee consists of: Shay Kutten (Technion)- chair Guy
Even (Tel Aviv University) David Peleg (Weizmann) Boaz Patt-Shamir (Tel Aviv
University) Masafumi Yamashita (Kyushu University)

A call for nomination is disseminated every year in the main mailing lists of
the Distributed Computing community, at least four months prior to the date
of that year's SIROCCO meeting.

Nominations can be made by any member of the scientific community. Each
nomination must identify the person(s) being nominated, and justify the
nomination by a short text including:

(a) a brief description of the innovative contribution in Distributed
Computing to be recognized by the award, and an explanation of its
originality and significance,

(b) the paper(s) of the nominee(s) that establish their eligibility as
described in the Eligibility section above items (1) and (2).

Nominations for 2013 should be sent to the Steering Committee chair of
SIROCCO: kutten@ie.technion.ac.il by April 23rd, 2013. Please write SIROCCO
Prize Nomination in the subject line.
