The Society of Deontic Logic and Normative Systems (DEON) has launched
a seasonal online seminar series designed to promote interdisciplinary
cooperation amongst scholars interested in linking the formal-logical study
of normative concepts, normative language, and normative systems with
computer science, artificial intelligence, linguistics, philosophy,
organization theory, and law. We view the seminar series as an opportunity
to keep in touch with the DEON community and listen in or contribute to
presentations and informal discussions on ongoing work. Everyone who is
interested in this wonderful area and its questions is welcome.

*Title: Imperatives and the Indirectness of Linguistic Meaning*

*Abstract: Imperatives in natural language are used not only to command or
prohibit, but also to request, plead, offer, permit, and even to merely
express a wish, to give advice on how-to, or to concede. What is common
across all these uses? I will propose that imperatives create commitments
to preferences. None of the perceived interpretations of imperatives
reflect their meaning directly. They all arise from inferences about why
the speaker would incur the commitment. This view explains the
communicative equivalence of imperatives with necessity modals in some
uses, and with possibility modals in others, despite their different
underlying semantics. Moreover, it explains an interesting asymmetry
between goal-oriented modals and imperatives: while modals can be used to
give advice on why a certain goal should be rescinded given the facts of
the matter, imperatives cannot.*

[DMANET] Call for Participation 2nd T e a P A C S - SIGMETRICS 2023

The Second International Workshop on Teaching Performance Analysis of Computer Systems
(https://teapacs.github.io/2023/ ) will be held on June 19, 2023, in Orlando, with SIGMETRICS 2023,
co-located with ten other top conferences as part of ACM FCRC 2023.

We call for academics, engineers and students to participate in T e a P A C S 2023. We have invited speakers who will provide keynotes on issues related to teaching. The workshop on Teaching Performance Analysis of Computer Systems (T e a P A C S) was conceived on the 50th anniversary of SIGMETRICS, with an objective to take stock of performance modeling analysis as a discipline. It was held in 2021 and co-located with the IFIP Performance Conference in Milano, Italy.

The need to open the discussion on this topic comes, on the one hand, from the obvious consideration that, since the formation of ACM SIGMETRICS and IFIP TC 7 (which includes WG 7.3 Computer System Modeling), computing systems have changed drastically. The growing complexity of systems, services, and their relative context makes it more urgent and critical to model and analyse the performance and behaviour of systems. On the other hand, the teaching of performance modeling has faced cutbacks as budgets are squeezed, and student interests shift.

The workshop aims to stimulate discussion on how the community should respond to this challenge. Consequently, the chosen format is to have invited speakers and discussions open to all participants.

The Second International Workshop on Teaching Performance Analysis of Computer Systems (T e a P A C S 2023, https://teapacs.github.io/2023/ ) wants to continue the discussion that was started during the First Workshop.

T e a P A C S 2021 aimed to assess performance analysis as a discipline and discuss how our community should respond to this challenge. DeepLearn 2023 Summer is part of a multi-event called Deep&Big 2023 consist=
ing also of BigDat 2023 Summer. DeepLearn 2023 Summer participants will hav=

SCOPE:

DeepLearn 2023 Summer will be a research training event with a global scope=
aiming at updating participants on the most recent advances in the critica=
l and fast developing area of deep learning. Previous events were held in B=
ilbao, Genova, Warsaw, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Guimar=C3=A3es, Las Palm=
as de Gran Canaria, Lule=C3=A5, Bournemouth and Bari.

Deep learning is a branch of artificial intelligence covering a spectrum of=
current frontier research and industrial innovation that provides more eff=
icient algorithms to deal with large-scale data in a huge variety of enviro=
nments: computer vision, neurosciences, speech recognition, language proces=
sing, human-computer interaction, drug discovery, health informatics, medic=
al image analysis, recommender systems, advertising, fraud detection, robot=
ics, games, finance, biotechnology, physics experiments, biometrics, commun=
ications, climate sciences, geographic information systems, signal processi=
ng, genomics, etc. etc. Renowned academics and industry pioneers will lectu=

Most deep learning subareas will be displayed, and main challenges identifi=

Aims and Scope
The role of sensing, including in-situ, proximity and remote, is
increasingly crucial for agriculture and forestry. Huge investments have
been made in this field - consider for instance satellite constellations
for remote sensing, the thriving UAV sector, and the dawning sector of
terrestrial rovers - and benefits are evident in several application areas.
The other side of the coin is represented by the data platforms used to
collect, store, and process the huge amount of data coming from sensing
platforms. Such data platforms have, among others, the role to provide
interoperable data through open interfaces to several different classes of
users.
The goal of this special session is to investigate the potential and the
challenges of both sensing and data platforms, looking to future
developments, and also considering economic and legal aspects to be
carefully taken into consideration.

Contributions are expected to deal with, but are not limited to, the
following topics:
- Sensing systems, both local and remote, and recent developments
- State of the art of data platforms linked to sensing systems
- GEOSS Data Sharing and Management Principles, FAIR principles, and other
interoperable solutions with the potential to further push the use of
sensing data
- Economic and legal aspects that can fuel or limit the use of such systems

Submission Instruction
Authors should prepare an Extended Abstract (4-5 pages) that clearly
indicates the originality of the contribution and the relevance of the
work. The Extended Abstract should include the title of the paper, names
and affiliations of the authors, an abstract, keywords, an introduction
describing the nature of the problem and the state of the art in the field
of interest, a description of the contribution, the results achieved and
their applicability, conclusions, and references.
When the review process has been completed, authors receive a notification
of either acceptance or rejection of the submission. If the paper has been
accepted, the authors can prepare a final paper that incorporates the
reviewers' suggestions.
The format for the final paper is identical to the format for the extended
abstract except for the number of pages: the full paper has a required
minimum length of five (5) pages and a maximum of six (6) pages.

The purpose of a conference template is to provide a consistent format for
papers appearing in the conference proceedings. IEEE strongly encourages
use of the conference manuscript templates.
IEEE conference templates contain guidance text for composing and
formatting conference papers. Please ensure that all guidance text is
removed from your conference paper prior to submission to the conference.
Failure to remove template text from your paper may result in your paper
not being published.

They are expressive enough to model many real-world applications where resources are scarse and there is competition for their use. eScience 2023 provides an interdisciplinary forum for researchers, developers, and users of

conceptualization, implementation, and experience contributions enabling and driving

intelligence and machine learning methods; and targeting a broad spectrum of architectures,
including HPC, Cloud, and IoT.

Systems 2023 will be the 18th in a series dedicated to security issues
in Internet-related applications, networks and systems. Internet has
become essential for the exchange of information between user groups and
organizations from different backgrounds and with different needs and
objectives. These users are exposed to increasing risks regarding
security and privacy, due to the development of more and more
sophisticated online attacks, the growth of Cyber Crime, etc.

Attackers nowadays do not lack motivation and they are more and more
experienced. To make matters worse, for performing attacks have become
easily accessible. Moreover, the increasing complexity as well as the
immaturity of new technologies such as pervasive, mobile and wireless
devices and networks, raise new security challenges. In this context,
new security mechanisms and techniques should be deployed to achieve an
assurance level acceptable for critical domains such as energy,

The 22nd International Conference on Cryptology and Network Security
(CANS) spans current advances in all aspects of cryptology, data
protection, and network and computer security. The session proceedings
and recommendations will be published in the Lecture Notes in Computer
Science series by Springer.

CANS 2023 will take place from October 31st to November 2nd , 2023,
in Augusta, Georgia, USA.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

High quality papers on unpublished research and implementation
experiences may be submitted. All papers must be original and not
substantially duplicated work that has been published at, or is
simultaneously submitted to, a journal or another conference or
workshop. All submissions must be written in English and span no more
than 20 pages in the Springer's Lecture Notes in Computer Science
(LNCS) format (a Springer template can be found in Overleaf),
including title, abstract, and bibliography. The introduction should
summarize the contributions of the paper at the level understandable
by a non-expert reader and explain the context to related work.

Submitted papers may contain supplementary material in the form of
well-marked appendices of any length. However, the main paper should
be intelligible without requiring the reader to consult supplementary
material. Submissions must be anonymous (no author names,
affiliations, acknowledgments, or obvious references). The conference
will also consider short papers of up to eight pages in the LNCS
format, excluding the bibliography, for results that are not yet fully
fleshed out or that simply require few pages to describe but still
make a significant contribution.

All submissions must be processed with LaTeX2e according to the
instructions given by Springer. Submitted manuscripts must be typeset
in plain Springer LNCS format, in particular without changing the font
size, margins or line spacing. Submissions not meeting these
guidelines may be rejected without consideration of their
merits. Papers must be submitted electronically in PDF format via

PRESENTATION AND PUBLICATION

At least one author of every accepted paper must register and pay the
full registration fee (non-student) for the conference by the early
registration deadline indicated by the organizers. Papers without a

accepted papers, will be published in LNCS and will be available at
the conference.

The *International Symposium on Algorithmic Aspects of Cloud Computing*
(ALGOCLOUD) is an annual event aiming to tackle the diverse new topics in
the emerging area of algorithmic aspects of computing and data management
in modern cloud-based systems interpreted broadly so as to include edge-
and fog-based systems, cloudlets, cloud micro-services, virtualization
environments, decentralized systems, as well as dynamic networks.

ALGOCLOUD aims at bringing together researchers, students, and
practitioners to present research activities and results on topics related
to algorithmic, design, and development aspects of modern cloud-based
systems. The 8th edition of this symposium (ALGOCLOUD 2023) is co-located
with ALGO 2023 http://algo-conference.org/2023, a leading international
event of researchers working on algorithms and their engineering.


*Submission Guidelines*ALGOCLOUD welcomes submissions on all theoretical,
design, and implementation aspects of modern cloud-based systems. ALGOCLOUD
is particularly interested in novel algorithms in the context of cloud and
edge computing, cloud architectures, cloud-edge continuum as well as
experimental work that evaluates contemporary cloud-edge approaches and
pertinent applications. ALGOCLOUD also welcomes demonstration manuscripts,
which discuss successful system developments, as well as
experience/use-case articles and high-quality survey papers. Contributions
may span a wide range of algorithms for modeling, practices for building
and techniques for evaluating operations and services in a variety of
systems, including but not limited to, virtualized infrastructures, cloud
computing platforms, edge computing platforms, fog computing platforms,
datacenters, cloud-storage options, cloud data management, non-traditional
key-value stores on the cloud, HPC architectures, decentralized systems, as
well as dynamic networks.

All papers must be original and not simultaneously submitted to another
journal or conference. The following paper categories are welcome:

- *Regular papers*: Authors are invited to submit high-quality
manuscripts reporting original unpublished research in the topics related
to the symposium. A regular paper submission should clearly motivate the
importance of the problem being addressed, discuss prior work and its
relationship to the paper, explicitly and precisely state the paper's key
contributions, and outline the key technical ideas and methods used to
achieve the main results. A regular paper submission should not exceed 12
pages, including title page and abstract but excluding references and an
optional appendix. Authors should include all necessary details in their
submission so that the Technical Program Committee (TPC) can judge the
correctness, importance, and originality of their work. Any material (e.g.,
proofs or experimental results) omitted (from the main part of 12 pages)
due to space limitations can be put into the optional appendix, which will
be read at the TPC's discretion. Regular papers will be allotted up to 20
pages in the proceedings.
- *Short papers*: A short paper submission may present work-in-progress
on a specific topic, or work appeared elsewhere but is worth publicizing it
in the symposium, or a demonstration of a system or library, or an
experience/use-case paper, or a vision paper. Authors should clearly
motivate the importance of their contribution, discuss prior work and its
relationship to the paper, and in general provide sufficient details in
their submission so that the TPC can judge the quality and importance of
their work. A short paper submission should be at least 2 and at most 8
pages. Short papers will be allotted up to 8 pages in the proceedings.
- *Survey papers*: A survey paper submission concerns the write-up of a
high-quality survey paper on an emerging hot topic. Authors are asked to
submit a proposal between 5 and 10 pages, that clearly motivates the
importance of the topic, and contains the structure of the survey paper
along with the most important references that will be critically reviewed
and presented. If the proposal is accepted, then authors will be given
sufficient time (until end of September 2023) to prepare the full version
of their survey paper that needs to pass a quality control check by the
TPC, in order to be finally accepted and appear in the proceedings. Survey
papers will be allotted up to 40 pages in the proceedings.

form. The corresponding author signing the copyright form should match the
corresponding author marked on the paper. Once the files have been sent to
Springer, changes relating to the authorship of the papers cannot be made.

To be held 4th IEEE International Conference on Autonomic Computing and
Self-Organizing Systems - ACSOS 2023
In Toronto, Canada from Mon 25 - Fri 29 September 2023

The goal of this inter-disciplinary workshop is to address two contrasting
pairs of inter-related research questions:

- firstly, the sustainability of self-organisation, given the features
of path dependency (where prior decisions significantly constrain present
choices); the iron law of oligarchy which identifies the tendency of
self-organisation to slide into oligarchy; and the avoidance of tyranny at
the core of Ober's Basic Democracy;
- secondly, and conversely, self-organisation for sustainability
building towards the UN Sustainability goals, along with developments
considering the pioneering work of Ostrom's self-governing institutions
for common-pool resource management, but also considering
self-sustainability, e.g. in the form of cooperative survival dilemmas;
- thirdly, scalability of self-organisation, for example as the number
of components in a system changes over time, how are structures and
processes for decision-making, dispute resolution and monitoring affected
by such changes, even with new 'generations'; and
- fourthly, and conversely, self-organisation for scalability, both for
pro-active management of anticipated growth or contraction, but also how
the values or incentives implied by self-organised rules change over time
(the rule-based equivalent of concept drift).

Graph Drawing is concerned with the geometric representation of graphs
and constitutes the algorithmic core of Network Visualization. Graph
Drawing and Network Visualization are motivated by applications where it
is crucial to visually analyze and interact with relational datasets.
Examples of such application areas include data science, social
sciences, web computing, information systems, biology, geography,
business intelligence, information security, and software engineering.

GD has been the main annual event in this area for about 30 years. Its
focus is on combinatorial and algorithmic aspects of graph drawing,
their practical evaluation, as well as the design of network
visualization systems and interfaces. Researchers and practitioners
working on any aspects of graph drawing and network visualization are
invited to contribute papers and posters and to participate in the
symposium and the graph drawing contest.

GD 2023 will be held at Isola delle Femmine (Palermo), Italy, on
September 20-22, 2023, with a reception on the evening of September 19.
A pre-conference PhD school is planned for September 19, 2023. GD 2023
is designed to be held on-site. It is expected that each accepted paper
will be presented in person by one of the authors, but if that proves
too difficult (due to, for example, health, visa, or travel funding
issues), please contact the PC chairs to request that your presentation
be online.

visualization. To promote a balanced coverage of the field, GD has two
distinct tracks, and papers submitted to one track will not compete with
papers submitted to the other track. Regular papers must be submitted
explicitly to one of the two tracks. However, all program committee
members may review papers from either track.


TRACK 1: Combinatorial and algorithmic aspects
This track is mainly devoted to fundamental theoretical graph drawing
advances, such as combinatorial aspects and algorithm design. The range
of topics for this track includes (but is not limited to):
* Design and analysis of graph drawing algorithms
* Geometric and topological graph theory
* Computational topology of graphs on surfaces
* Graph representations
* Geometric algorithms and optimization


TRACK 2: Experimental, applied, and network visualization aspects
This track is mainly devoted to the practical aspects of graph drawing,
such as experimental evaluations of graph drawing related algorithms,
the development and/or evaluation of related libraries and tools, or
systems and interfaces in different application areas. The range of
topics for this track includes (but is not limited to):
* Engineering of graph drawing algorithms and network
visualization systems
* Libraries, tools and systems in the context of graph drawing
and network visualization
* Interfaces and methods for interacting with graphs and
networks
* Benchmarks and experimental studies in the context of graph
drawing and network visualization
* Cognitive studies on network visualization readability and
user interaction
* Visualization of networks in real world applications

Authors of accepted applied papers can request the opportunity to show a
demo of their software/system during the poster session.


SHORT PAPERS

In addition to the above two tracks, there will be a separate category
for short papers, describing theoretical or applied contributions of
shorter length. Papers in this category will be assigned a shorter time
for presentation during the conference.


SUBMISSION FORMAT

All submissions must be formatted using the appropriate LaTeX style
file, either gd-llncs.cls for long papers or gd-llncs-short.cls for
short papers; these are derived from the style file used for the
conference series Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) provided by
Springer. The default margins and fonts must not be modified; in
particular, the use of packages such as times.sty is not allowed.
Submissions that do not comply with this format risk rejection without
consideration of their merits.

To promote inclusion of figures in the submitted papers, submissions
will have a strict limit on the number of text lines. Regular papers may
have at most 400 lines. We expect the main content of the paper to
typically fit within 14 pages (excluding references. For publishing
purposes, the final version must adhere to a strict limit of 17 pages
(including everything). Short papers may have at most 225 lines,
typically fit within 7 pages (excluding references); the final version
must adhere to a strict limit of 9 pages overall. The line count does
not include: title, authors block, keywords, references; for figures,
tables, and algorithm pseudo-code, only the lines of the main caption
should be counted. Lines in all the rest of the paper, including the
abstract, should be counted. The style file includes a method to number
the counted lines according to these rules, which needs to be turned on
for the submission. The claims of the paper should be fully
substantiated. If this information does not fit within the line limit,
the authors should include it in a clearly marked appendix, whose length
is not constrained and which the reviewers may read at their own

POSTERS & CONTEST

Submissions of posters on graph drawing, network visualization, and
related areas are solicited. The poster session will provide a forum
for the communication of late-breaking research results (which may also
appear elsewhere) to the GD community. Authors of posters should prepare
an abstract (up to 2 pages in LNCS style) that must be submitted
together with the poster itself.

LIGHTWEIGHT DOUBLE-BLIND REVIEW PROCESS

The review process will be handled in a "lightweight double-blind mode".
This means that authors are not allowed to reveal their identity in the
submitted paper, but are free to disseminate draft versions of the paper
prior to the conference and to give talks on the topic as they normally
would. In particular, the submitted paper should not contain the
authors' names, affiliations, and email addresses. References to their
own related work are allowed, as long as the supporting text maintains
anonymity (e.g., using sentences in the third person).

Members of the Program Committee will not have the identity of the
authors of any paper revealed to them during the entire review process.
To handle conflicts of interest effectively, authors will be offered the
opportunity to declare conflict of interest with PC members when they
submit their paper.

PUBLICATION: PROCEEDINGS AND SPECIAL ISSUES

All accepted papers (including the two-page poster abstracts) will
appear in the conference proceedings, published by Springer in the
Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) series. The LNCS proceedings
will be made freely accessible to the GD community upon publication and
openly accessible to anyone after four years.

Authors will be required to submit their accepted papers to the arXiv
repository at the same time as submitting their camera-ready versions,
in order to provide immediate and unrestricted open access to them. The
self-archived arXiv papers shall consist of (essentially) the LNCS
proceedings version plus an optional clearly marked appendix. This
appendix could contain a long version of the entire paper or proofs that
have been omitted from the main text. Subsequent submissions of revised
versions of the paper to the arXiv (known as arXiv "replacements'') are
allowed. Upon submission of the camera-ready version of an accepted
paper, the authors will be required to specify the arXiv identifier
associated with the paper for inclusion in a conference index, which
will be also published in the arXiv repository. Failure to comply with
these guidelines will impede the publication of the paper.

Each paper or poster must be presented at the conference by an author
(barring unforeseen circumstances), otherwise the paper will not be
included in the proceedings. Should any visa/travel/health restriction
prevent an author from attending the conference and presenting a paper,
they will be given ways to participate and give the talk via electronic
means.

Selected papers from both tracks will be invited for submission to a
special issue of the Journal of Graph Algorithms and Applications
(JGAA). The authors of two selected papers in Track 2 will be invited to
submit a substantially extended and enhanced version of their work to
IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics (TVCG).
