PURPOSE

The purposes of the competition are to:

* recognise outstanding contributions to addressing global challenges
through the application of OR,
* raise awareness of the important role OR can play in contributing to
global challenges such as the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

THE PRIZE

The prize consists of a certificate and reward of €3,000 shared between
the representatives of the winning application.

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

All interested candidates are invited to submit a detailed description of
an outstanding contribution to addressing global challenges through the
application of OR. This application will demonstrate a real impact on
society for the common good, which has original features, whether in
methodology, field of application and/or implementation. This may be in the
form of a paper written for publication (although not necessarily published
at the time of submission), a client report, or other appropriate
documentation. The documentation must describe the work in a way that
illustrates how it meets the criteria outlined below. The age limit for
published papers is four years. The work must not have been submitted
concurrently to another competition. The application is open to OR
specialists from any part of the world. Please also check the guidelines.

The criteria for the evaluation of the papers are:

real impact on society for the common good,
scientific quality,
appreciation by the organisation involved with the application,
originality in methodology, implementations and/or field of application.

Letters of appreciation by the organization involved with the application
are important.

The jury selects a short-list of finalists who will present their work in a
special session at the 33rd European Conference on Operational Research in
Copenhagen. There is no registration fee for one representative of each of
the finalist presentations. The winner will be determined by the jury at
the end of the special session(s) and will be announced by the chair of the
jury during the closing session of the EURO 2024 Conference.

dissertation in OR defended in the countries having an OR society that is a
member of EURO.

THE PRIZE

The prize consists of a certificate and reward of €1,000

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

The EDDA 2024 jury will only consider dissertations in Operational Research
defended between 1 January 2022 and 31 December 2023. The dissertation must
have been defended in a University located in a member country of EURO. The
author of the dissertation must be a member of a member society of EURO.

To be considered, a dissertation should be nominated by the supervisor of
the thesis (one of them in case of multiple supervisors). The supervisor of
the dissertation is asked to provide the jury with the following
information:

*The text of the dissertation;
*An extended abstract (3 to 5 pages) of the dissertation; this abstract
should be written in English and should include precise keywords;
*If the dissertation is not in English, a paper in English which has been
authored or co-authored by the candidate and which describes the core ideas
of the dissertation. This paper should preferably have been published in or
submitted to an international journal;
*Nomination letters (or reports) from two referees selected by the
dissertation supervisor, supporting the submission and stating their
assessment of why the dissertation should win the award;
*An up-to-date CV of the candidate, including a list of publications.

No nomination will be considered without these items. Please also check the
guidelines.

Since many doctoral dissertations in OR are defended each year only
outstanding pieces of work are expected to be submitted. The jury would
like to remind supervisors that only high-quality theses might have a
chance of winning the award.

The jury selects a shortlist of finalists who will present their work in a
special session at the 33rd European Conference on Operational Research in
Copenhagen. There is no registration fee for each finalist. EURO will also
contribute to the travel and accommodation expenses. The winner will be
determined by the jury at the end of the special session(s) and will be

[DMANET] PhD position in operations research at Rutgers University

Funding is available for a PhD position in operations research at Rutgers University, USA, to work on the topic "A Polyhedral Approach to some Infinite Sequencing Problems". Abstract:

This project will focus on search problems for which a target is located in one of a finite number of possible locations but if a target is present in a given location, a search of that location does not necessarily guarantee that the target will be found - that is, there is some "overlook probability" which determines the likelihood that the target is not found.

This project will consider two related but distinct settings in this project. The first setting will be concerned with finding searches that minimize the time or expected time to find a hidden target. This could be appropriate if an attack (or cyberattack) is causing ongoing damage, and the objective is to stop it as soon as possible. The amount of damage being done may depend on the location of the target, and the time taken to search a location may vary with the location.

The second setting considers search problems for which the target may be a survivor of a natural disaster or a prisoner held by an adversary, and we assume there is a possibility that the search will be halted before the target has been found (for example if the searcher becomes trapped herself or captured by an adversary). In this case the objective is to maximize the probability of locating the target. It is assumed that at each location there is a given probability that the search will be terminated when that location is searched.

This project will take a geometric approach to understanding the structure of feasible searches in both settings, and will focus on leveraging this understanding to solve the problem of finding optimal worst-case searches.

The Distributed Computing Column features Dean Leitersdorf who won the 2023
Principles of Distributed Computing Doctoral Dissertation Award and whose
work on sparse matrix multiplication has led to several breakthroughs. The
Bulletin further includes the laudation for Boaz Patt-Shamir, the winner of
the SIROCCO Prize for Innovation in Distributed Computing.

In the Theory Blog Column, Bill Gasarch answers our questions on his
experience writing for a theory blog with a very large and engaged
community of readers, also highlighting two posts, one related to open
problems in mathematics and another on using SAT solvers to get concrete
bounds on extremal combinatorics problems.

In the Computational Complexity Column, Ian Mertz invites us to dip our
toes into the sometimes paradox world of reusing space, discussing some
highlight results in the area and presenting a wide variety of open
problems.

In the Logics Column, Yuri Gurevich and Andreas Blass explain the ket
notation introduced in quantum mechanics. The Formal Language Theory Column
presents a historical review of the International Conference of
Descriptional Complexity of Formal Systems (DCFS) which encompasses all
aspects of descriptional complexity, both in theory and application, and
discusses outstanding topics.

With the emergence of foundation models (FMs) and Large Language Models
(LLMs) that are trained on large amounts of data at scale and adaptable to
a wide range of downstream applications, Artificial intelligence is
experiencing a paradigm revolution. BERT, T5, ChatGPT, GPT-4, Falcon 180B,
Codex, DALL-E, Whisper, and CLIP are now the foundation for new
applications ranging from computer vision to protein sequence study and
from speech recognition to coding. Earlier models had a reputation of
starting from scratch with each new challenge. The capacity to experiment
with, examine, and comprehend the capabilities and potentials of
next-generation FMs is critical to undertaking this research and guiding
its path. Nevertheless, these models are currently inaccessible as the
resources required to train these models are highly concentrated in
industry, and even the assets (data, code) required to replicate their
training are frequently not released due to their demand in the real-time
industry. At the moment, mostly large tech companies such as OpenAI,
Google, Facebook, and Baidu can afford to construct FMs and LLMS. Despite
the expected widely publicized use of FMs and LLMS, we still lack a
comprehensive knowledge of how they operate, why they underperform, and
what they are even capable of because of their emerging global qualities.
To deal with these problems, we believe that much critical research on FMs
and LLMS would necessitate extensive multidisciplinary collaboration, given
their essentially social and technical structure.

The International Symposium on Foundation and Large Language Models (FLLM)

Theory and Applications of Models of Computation (TAMC) is a series of
annual conferences that aims to bring together a wide range of researchers
with interests in computational theory and its applications. These
conferences have a strong interdisciplinary character and are distinguished
by an appreciation of mathematical depth and scientific approaches. The
conference explores the algorithmic foundations, computational methods, and
computing devices to meet the rapidly emerging challenges of complexity,
scalability, sustainability, and interoperability, with wide-ranging
impacts on virtually every aspect of human endeavor.

The TAMC conference series was initiated in 2004 in Beijing, China.
Subsequent TAMC conferences have been held in Kunming, China (2004),
Beijing, China (July 2006), Shanghai, China (2007), Xi'an, China (2008),
Changsha, China, (2009), Prague, Czech Republic (2010), Tokyo, Japan
(2011), Beijing, China (2012), Hong Kong, China (2013), Chennai, India
(2014), Singapore (2015), Bern, Switzerland (2016, 2017), Kitakyushu, Japan
(2019), Changsha, China (2020), Tianjin, China (2022).

In 2024, TAMC will return to Hong Kong as a fully offline conference. The
conference will offer a platform for researchers interested in
computational theory and applications to exchange ideas and present their
work. The main themes of the conference are computability, algorithms,
complexity, models of computation, and systems theory.

Acta Informatica, with the submission deadline being shortly after the
conference. Submissions will undergo a standard peer review process
according to the usual editorial standards of the journal.

[DMANET] 27th POC Seminar on Dec 15th - "Recent progress and interesting facts about the Simplex Algorithm"

Dear colleagues,

We are happy to announce the upcoming 27th Seminar of the POC group (the
French Polyhedra and Combinatorial Optimization group) on December 15th at
the ESSEC Business School campus at La Défense (Paris).

The POC group (Polyhèdres et Optimization Combinatoire) is a group
transversal to various French research laboratories (LAMSADE, LIMOS, LIPN,
ESSEC, etc.) which welcomes academics but also colleagues from companies
(such as Orange and EDF) brought together by the interest towards the
polyhedral (both theoretical and algorithmic) aspects of combinatorial
optimization problems. The group organizes two seminars per year (SPOC) on
topics complementary to the group's themes, as well as JPOC (
https://jpoc13.sciencesconf.org) and ISCO (
https://www.lamsade.dauphine.fr/~isco).

The topic of this edition of SPOC is "Recent progress and interesting facts
about the Simplex Algorithm" and it will include the talks of some
distinguished experts in the field such as:

WAW 2024 invites original research papers and abstracts on all aspects of algorithmic and mathematical research in the areas pertaining to the graph and hypergraph theory and applications. We especially encourage submission of papers that espouse the view of complex data as networks.

Submissions are invited in, but not limited to, the following areas:
• Algorithms: graph and hypergraph algorithms, clustering, collaborative filtering, routing optimization.
• Analysis: structural properties, visualization, patterns, communities, discovery, flow simulation.
• Data Models: graph and hypergraph models, evolution, trust and reputation networks.
• Topics: Web, social networks, transportation networks, economic interactions, communication networks, recommender networks, citation networks, Wikipedia, biological networks, blogs, p2p.
• Applications: web mining, social and business applications, routing & transportation, web search and ranking.
• Theory: properties of random graphs models that are used to model complex networks, higher-order structures, network geometry, temporal networks and dynamics, dynamic processes such as polarization, social learning, contagions.

The papers must be formatted according to Springer LNCS style. The maximum length of papers is at most 15 pages but shorter papers are welcome. Acceptance of papers will be based on the reviews provided by the program committee members. The workshop proceedings will be published as a Springer LNCS volume. Talks associated with proceedings papers will be 30 minutes.

Abstracts are a maximum of one page, may be in any style, and must be pdf files. They should include the title, speakers, and a summary of research. All abstracts related to the conference areas will be evaluated by the program committee. Accepted abstracts will be published on the conference website (but not published in the proceedings). Talks associated with abstracts will be 20 minutes.

[DMANET] 3 Postdoc positions available at University of Edinburgh

There is job opening of three 1-year postdoc positions in my research
group at the University of Edinburgh. The research group, consisting
of 6 researchers at the moment, works on different aspects of spectral
graph theory and its application. This includes researching spectral
digraph and hypergraph theory, designing efficient spectral algorithms
for graph problems in TCS and machine learning, as well as developing
Spectral Toolkit of Algorithms for Graphs (STAG), which is the first
C++ based open-source library for spectral graph algorithms. More

[DMANET] PhD position in theory of distributed algorithms

One PhD positions is available in the Algorithms & Complexity group of
Yannic Maus (https://academia.yannicmaus.de/) at TU Graz, Austria. The
group has a broad interest in algorithms and complexity, currently with
a strong focus on modern models of computation such as distributed and
massively parallel computing.

Who are we looking for?
Are you particularly attracted by algorithmic and/or combinatorial
questions? Are you also fascinated by the possibilities of future
computer applications that will be built on top of various forms of
large-scale networks and highly parallel systems? Ideally, you have a
strong background in computer science or a related field. We expressly
encourage students from maths to apply if they are interested in
algorithmic questions and/or like graphs. A background in distributed or
parallel algorithms is not necessary.

What we offer:
All positions are fully funded and come with excellent working
conditions, such as a competitive salary, social security, 25 days of
vacation, and  travel support. The group is located at the vibrant and
strongly growing faculty of computer science and biomedical engineering,
providing the potential for collaborations within TU Graz. Additionally,
the group has established strong ties to several leading research groups
at TU Graz, across Austria, Europe, and beyond. For example, we have
ongoing collaborations with groups in Germany, Finland, Iceland and
Israel. While it is not formally required, we strongly encourage and
support international collaborations and international research visits.
Participation in teaching is encouraged (at most one day a week), but
not required. The starting dates of the positions are flexible
(optimally starting in early summer 2023). Knowledge of German is not
necessary.

Graz is known for its quality of life, a large amount of sunshine and
excellent food. With the Alps in the north, vineyards in the south,  and
Slovenia and Croatia being close it offers ample close-by opportunities
for leisure activities and vacation. With 300.000 inhabitants Graz is
Austria's second largest city with a thriving cultural life to which
also the more than 50.000 students contribute. The rental cost is
significantly cheaper than in other European cities.

[DMANET] Open Assistant Professor position at Politecnico di Milano

The Machine Learning and Big Data Analytics research group "door" (https://www.door.polimi.it/) at the School of Management (SoM) of Politecnico di Milano opened an Assistant Professor position (RTdA) in Artificial Intelligence.
The position is a full-time fixed-term commitment of 3+2 years, with a preferred start date in the first half of 2024. Teaching in Bachelor and Master of Science courses is a duty. Salary and teaching loads are comparable to other academic institutions abroad.

The position focuses on the design and validation of AI-based models and algorithms for complex environments where different agents (i.e. humans and robots) interact and collaborate to achieve a specific goal. Attention will be devoted, but not limited, to developing machine learning techniques to build early warning systems or to enhance the safety of the environment. The potential of data-driven digital twin (DT) approaches to create smart systems for process optimization will be also explored.

Eligible candidates must have a PhD degree and an excellent, proven, research track record in at least one of the following fields: Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Intelligent Systems, Human-Robot Interaction.
Strong skills in programming languages (including C/C++, Python) are also required.

With the emergence of foundation models (FMs) and Large Language Models
(LLMs) that are trained on large amounts of data at scale and adaptable to
a wide range of downstream applications, Artificial intelligence is
experiencing a paradigm revolution. BERT, T5, ChatGPT, GPT-4, Falcon 180B,
Codex, DALL-E, Whisper, and CLIP are now the foundation for new
applications ranging from computer vision to protein sequence study and
from speech recognition to coding. Earlier models had a reputation of
starting from scratch with each new challenge. The capacity to experiment
with, examine, and comprehend the capabilities and potentials of
next-generation FMs is critical to undertaking this research and guiding
its path. Nevertheless, these models are currently inaccessible as the
resources required to train these models are highly concentrated in
industry, and even the assets (data, code) required to replicate their
training are frequently not released due to their demand in the real-time
industry. At the moment, mostly large tech companies such as OpenAI,
Google, Facebook, and Baidu can afford to construct FMs and LLMS. Despite
the expected widely publicized use of FMs and LLMS, we still lack a
comprehensive knowledge of how they operate, why they underperform, and
what they are even capable of because of their emerging global qualities.
To deal with these problems, we believe that much critical research on FMs
and LLMS would necessitate extensive multidisciplinary collaboration, given
their essentially social and technical structure.

The proliferation of information, communication, and computer technologies
has brought us into the realm of cyber-physical-social system (CPSS). CPSS
comprises of the cyber space, physical space and social space, and their
integration such as cyber-physical system (CPS), Internet of Thing (IoT),
social computing system, and even the system integrating all three spaces.
Recently, CPSS has brought enormous opportunities that have significantly
influenced applications. However, there are increasing security, privacy,
and trust concerns such as exposure of user privacy and business
information in CPSS. Although theories and technologies about security,
privacy, and trust have been widely studied and applied in recent years,
existing methods are still insecure, impractical or inefficient. To address
these challenges, this topic solicits the latest research outcomes and
developments on security, privacy, and trust.
