The University of Southampton's School of Management (http://www.management.soton.ac.uk/) is internationally recognised as one of the UK's leading centres for management education and research.

The School has been awarded a University PhD Scholarship for full or part-time entry in October 2010 for the project titled "Minimising greenhouse gas emissions in intermodal freight transportation through mathematical modelling". The scholarship totals GBP 7000 per annum for each of 3 years, pro-rata for part-time students, and is open to UK/EU and international students.
One year's funding will be allocated initially with subsequent funding subject to satisfactory progress of the student.

The PhD student will join the Management Science division within the School of Management and contribute to the activities of the Centre for Operational Research, Management Science and Information Systems (CORMSIS, www.cormsis.soton.ac.uk<http://www.cormsis.soton.ac.uk>). The student will primarily
be supervised by Dr Tolga Bektas.

The successfull applicant will be of excellent calibre with an MSc in Management Sciences, Operational Research, Business Analytics or a similar quantitative degree. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential. It is highly desirable that the student has knowledge of or prior experience in mathematical programming, optimisation methods, use of optimisation packages and computer programming. Any prior experience in logistics/transportation network modelling is a plus.

Applicants whose first language is not English and do not have a degree from a UK university will be required to provide evidence of competency in English by reaching an appropriate standard in an approved text such as IELTS, TOEFL.
