MADALGO Summer School on Algorithms for Modern Parallel and Distributed Models

               MADALGO Summer School on

    ALGORITHMS FOR MODERN PARALLEL AND DISTRIBUTED MODELS

        August 20-23, 2012, Aarhus University, Denmark

           www.madalgo.au.dk/pardist2012

OVERVIEW AND GOAL
Handling massive data often requires use of parallel or distributed algorithms. Current technology offers many ways of implementing such algorithms, e.g. GPUs, multi-core CPUs, the map-reduce framework, etc. Each technology has its strengths, but also comes with some limitations.

The goal of the summer school is to provide an in-depth introduction to some of the models of modern parallel and distributed technology, and the key techniques used to design efficient algorithms in these models. A number of open problems will also be highlighted.

LECTURERS
The school will be taught by experts in the area of parallel and distributed algorithms. Confirmed lecturers are (further will be added):

* Phillip B. Gibbons (Intel Labs Pittsburgh)
* Sergei Vassilvitskii (Google)
* Graham Cormode (AT&T Research)
* Suresh Venkatasubramanian (University of Utah)

PARTICIPATION
The summer school will take place on August 20-23, 2012 at Center for Massive Data Algorithmics (MADALGO) in the Department of Computer Science, Aarhus University, Denmark.

The school is targeted at graduate students, as well as researchers interested in algorithms for parallel and distributed models.

The capacity of the summer school is limited. Prospective participants should register using the online registration form available at www.madalgo.au.dk/pardist2012. Registering graduate students must also have their supervisor send a letter confirming their graduate student status directly to madalgo@madalgo.au.dk; the subject line of the email should be 'student_<last name>/SS_2012/confirming'. Registration is on a first-come-first-serve basis and will close on Friday July 13, 2012.

Registration is free; handouts, coffee breaks, lunches and a dinner will be provided by MADALGO and Aarhus University.

ORGANIZING COMMITTEE
* Peyman Afshani (MADALGO, Aarhus University)
* Lars Arge (MADALGO, Aarhus University)
* Gerth S. Brodal (MADALGO, Aarhus University)
* Ulrich Meyer (MADALGO, Goethe-University Frankfurt am Main)

LOCAL ARRANGEMENTS
* Else Magard (MADALGO, Aarhus University
* Matie Bach Søgaard (MADALGO, Aarhus University
* Jan Frederiksen (Aarhus University)

ABOUT MADALGO
Center for Massive Data Algorithmics is a major basic research center funded by the Danish National Research Foundation. The center is located at the Department of Computer Science, Aarhus University, Denmark, but also includes researchers at CSAIL, Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the US, and at the Max Planck Institute for Informatics and at Frankfurt University in Germany. The center covers all areas of the design, analysis and implementation of algorithms and data structures for processing massive data (interpreted broadly to cover computations where data is large compared to the computational resources), but with a main focus on I/O-efficient, cache-oblivious, and data stream algorithms. The center also emphasizes work on the boundary between the algorithms and database areas, in particular work in relation to efficient indexing and query and update processing.
