ABOUT PARSOCIAL
Computational methods to represent, model and analyze problems using social information have come a long way in the last decade. Computational methods, such as social network analysis, have provided exciting insights into how social information can be utilized to better understand social processes, and model the evolution of social systems over time. We have also seen a rapid proliferation of sensor technologies, such as smartphones and medical sensors, for collecting a wide variety of social data, much of it in real time. Meanwhile, the emergence of parallel architectures, in the form of multi-core/many-core processors, and distributed platforms have provided new approaches for large-scale modeling and simulation, and new tools for analysis. These two trends have dramatically broadened the scope of computational social systems research, and are enabling researchers to tackle new challenges. These challenges include modeling of real world scenarios with dynamic and real-time data, and formulating rigorous computational frameworks to embed social and behavioral theories while taking into account ramifications in relation to policy, ethics, privacy and other areas.

This workshop provides a platform to bring together interdisciplinary researchers from areas, such as computer science, social sciences, applied mathematics and engineering, to showcase innovative research in computational social systems that leverage the emerging trends in parallel and distributed processing, computational modeling, and high performance computing.

The papers selected for ParSocial will be published in the workshop proceedings. Proceedings of the workshops are distributed at the conference and are submitted for inclusion in the IEEE Xplore Digital Library after the conference. At least one of the authors of each accepted paper must register as a participant of the workshop and present the paper at the workshop.

[DMANET] Next Talk - TIES Webinar Series on Data Science for Environmental Sciences (DSES)

The International Environmetrics Society (TIES) has launched the *TIES
Webinar Series on Data Science for Environmental Sciences (DSES)*.

Our next webinar will be on *January 27*, at *11 am Central Time* (attached
flyer).
You can virtually access the webinar and register via our website:
www.environmetrics.xyz

*Speaker:* *Marie-Josee Fortin*, University of Toronto.

*Title:* *Combining network theory and tree functional traits to improve
forest resilience to global change*

*Abstract:* To manage forests as complex adaptive systems, approaches based
on resilience, functional diversity, assisted migration, and multi-species
plantations can be used. We propose a novel approach to integrate the
functionality of species-traits into a functional complex network approach
as a flexible and multi-scale way to manage forests for the Anthropocene.
This approach takes into consideration the high level of uncertainty
associated with future environmental and societal changes. It relies on the
quantification and dynamic monitoring of functional diversity and complex
network indices to manage forests as a functional complex network. Using
this novel approach, the most efficient forest management and silvicultural
practices can be determined, as well as at what scale and at what intensity
landscape-scale resistance, resilience, and adaptive capacity of forests to
global changes can be improved.

*Bio:* Marie-Josee is a Canada Research Chair in Spatial Ecology. An
ecologist by training, Marie-Josée has four main research areas: spatial
ecology, disturbance ecology, conservation, and spatial statistics. Her
research program studies the effects of global change (land-use and
climate) on species spatial dynamics at the landscape and geographical
range levels both in multiuse forested ecosystems and aquatic networks to
maintain biodiversity and species conservation.

Hope to see you all there!

[DMANET] PACE 2023 Call for Participation

We are happy to announce the eighth iteration of PACE, the
Parameterized Algorithms and Computational Experiments Challenge. The
goals of PACE as well as official reports for past challenges can be
found on our website: https://pacechallenge.org/.

The challenge this year is a fascinating new width parameter:
twinwidth. It was introduced at FOCS 2020 by Bonnet, Kim, Thomassé,
and Watrigant and has seen an enormous amount of interest in the
research community resulting in papers at, e.g., SODA 2021, ICALP
2021, STOC 2022, SODA 2022, and ICALP 2022. Nevertheless, very little
is known about practically computing contraction sequences of small
width. We hope to remedy this situation in this year's PACE challenge.

** Tracks
------------------------------------------------------------
We will have one track for exact algorithms and another for heuristic
algorithms.

**Exact:**
Your task is to find an optimal solution for each twinwidth
instance within 30 minutes. You will be ranked by the number of solved
instances.

**Heuristic:**
Your task is to find the best solution for each twinwidth instance
within 5 minutes. You will be ranked by the quality of the solution.

** Timeline
------------------------------------------------------------
- Already present on the webpage: Tiny test instances, input and
output format descriptions, a verifier program, and more detailed
ranking information.
- You can already run your solver on the tiny test instances on

[DMANET] Two Doctoral Scholarships on the Techno-Economic Modeling of Hydrogen Value Chains

Two Doctoral Scholarships on the Techno-Economic Modeling of Hydrogen Value Chains
====================================================================

Application Deadline: January 10th 2023

The Boysen-TU Dresden Research Training Group offers two doctoral scholarships from
March 1, 2023, for a maximum of 3 years. The interdisciplinary Research Training Group,
in what is its fourth generation, is conducting research on the overarching topic
"Hydrogen Economy – Strategic element of a future GreenGas deal". It consists of
four clusters. The Cluster H: "Techno-Economic Modeling of Hydrogen Value Chains"
consists of four PhD projects.

We are looking for suitable candidates (m/f/d) for subproject H1 "Mathematical
Optimization Models for the Design and Analysis of Cross-Sectoral Hydrogen Value
Chains" and subproject H2 "Coordination in Hydrogen Value Chains from an Actor-
Centered Perspective".

Scholarship H1: Mathematical Optimization Models for the Design and Analysis of
Cross-Sectoral Hydrogen Value Chains
===============================================================
The aim of this project is to develop cross-sectoral mathematical optimization
models and adequate solution algorithms in order to analyze the structure of
future hydrogen value chains considering various scenarios. In particular, the
distribution of the limited resources to produce green hydrogen across the
different application areas will be investigated. The main focus is the
distribution of green hydrogen in order to achieve the greatest possible
reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

This project will be supervised by the Junior Professorship of Management
Science at the Faculty of Business and Economics.

Requirements
- Above-average academic degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in the fields of Management
and Economics, Industrial Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics,
or similar
- Operations Research skills from your studies, especially in developing and
implementing mathematical optimization models
- Very good English skills and strong communication skills
- Three weekly core days for attendance at the research training group
- Participation in the teaching program of the research training group
(24 ECTS in 3 years)

Main supervisor: Tristan Becker <msci@tu-dresden.de>

Scholarship H2: Coordination in Hydrogen Value Chains from an Actor-Centered
Perspective
=============================================================
This dissertation project aims to examine the challenges of designing hydrogen
value chains from an actor perspective using game theory methods to derive
design recommendations for the coordination of the actors. Existing approaches
take a systemic perspective to configure hydrogen value chains in a way which
matches hydrogen demand and supply in the best possible way. However, this
neglects the fact that legally independent actors, which often have their own
interests, appear within the value chain. Therefore, it is important to analyze
how the interaction of actors with individual interests influences the hydrogen
value chain as a whole.

Requirements
- Above-average academic degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in the fields of Management
and Economics, Industrial Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics,
or similar
- Operations Research skills from your studies, especially in developing and
implementing mathematical optimization models and game theory
- Very good English skills and strong communication skills
- Three weekly core days for attendance at the research training group
- Participation in the teachung program of the research training group
(24 ECTS in 3 years)

Main supervisor: Udo Buscher <udo.buscher@tu-dresden.de>

[DMANET] EURO PhD Summer School on Retail Operations. 17-20 September 2023. Stockholm, Sweden.

Apologies for cross-posting

https://www.su.se/stockholm-business-school/education/courses-and-programmes/summer-school-on-retail-operations-1.636289

A three-day, full-time, intensive PhD course on Retail Operations and
Analytics.

When: 17-20 September 2023
Where: Stockholm Business School, Stockholm University

Supported by EURO and the Swedish Wholesale and Retail Council

What:

The aim of this course is to further develop doctoral students' skills and
knowledge on how machine learning and analytics can be used to analyze and
solve Operations Management problems in the retail industry.

Over the last decade, the retail industry has transformed completely.
Having been dominated by brick-and-mortar retailers, the retail industry
now consists of a smorgasbord of hybrid omni-channel formats combining
online and brick-and-mortar channels in different ways. This shift has lead
to numerous challenges for retailers on how to best organize and operate to
meet the needs of its customers in a financially and environmentally
sustainable way. At the same time, numerous digital tools means there is
more data available than ever to help retailers in making these decisions.

Upon successful completion of the course, students will have a sound
understanding of how novel methods for data analysis can be used to analyze
and improve retail operations. In particular, participants are expected to:

-Possess an advanced knowledge base on operations research and other
analytics methodologies in the context of retail operations
-Be able to critically evaluate and assess different methodological
approaches in relation to their own PhD research
-Be able to communicate and discuss complex operational problems in retail
operations with their peers and experts in the field
-Be able to design solution approaches for industrial case studies and
present these to relevant stakeholders

For whom

The course is intended for doctoral students of Operations Management or
similar field (industrial engineering, operations research, business
economics etc.), interested in building a sound understanding of concepts,
methods and tools to improve retail operations.

We expect the course to be particularly useful for students motivated to
develop OR tools to solve real cases in Retail contexts.

Content

The course consists of three full days of course work, together with four
weeks of individual studies on a case assignment and a full day to report
the case assignment. Students are also expected to participate in the EWG
annual meeting which will be held in the days following the summer school.
The course work combines hands-on tutorials on selected topics on the
interface of operations research and retail operations. Over the course of
the three days, there is also time for relaxed time slots to discuss PhD
research plans with peers and expert guests from the field.

Sep 17: Arrival and dinner
Sep 18: Statistical Inference in Operations Analytics, Fredrik Eng-Larsson
and Olov Isaksson, Stockholm University, Sweden; PhD research plans
workshop and social activities
Sep 19: Machine Learning applied to Operations Research, Ali Aouad, London
Business School, U.K. and Antoine Desir, INSEAD, France; practitioner
round-table and social activities
Sep 20: Case study on analytics in retail operations with mentoring
sessions, Victor Martinez de Albeniz, IESE Business School

The case assignments will be based on a real case from industry, which will
be prepared by the course faculty and scientific committee. Students will
work in multidisciplinary teams and will be able to interact in different
formats with company representatives and mentors (a Senior EWG Retail Ops
member). After four weeks of individual case work the class will meet to
discuss the case assignment.

Fee and registration

Participation is €400, which includes accommodation, all meals, and social
activities. Accommodation is provided in double rooms, but option of single
rooms is offered with extra payment. Travel costs should be covered by the
