[DMANET] Tenure-track assistant professorship in foundations of computer science with a focus on logic and automated reasoning

The Department of Computer Science at Lund University invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professorship in the foundations of computer science with a focus on logic and automated reasoning.

The assistant professor will be working at the Department of Computer Science, where research into the foundations of computer science is conducted by professors Susanna de Rezende and Jakob Nordstrom. Jakob Nordstrom leads the research group Mathematical Insights into Algorithms for Optimization (http://www.jakobnordstrom.se/miao-group), which is also active at the University of Copenhagen. The research has a unique profile in that it spans a wide range of questions from the theoretical, mathematical foundations of efficient computation all the way to state-of-the-art practical algorithms for real-world problems. This creates a very special environment, where the research projects do not only go deep into different theoretical and applied topics, but where different lines of research cross-fertilise each other and unexpected and exciting synergies often arise.

This position focuses on algorithms for foundational problems within logic, automated reasoning, and combinatorial optimization. This includes design and implementation of algorithms for computational problems within Boolean satisfiability (SAT) solving, constraint programming, mixed integer linear programming, and/or satisfiability modulo theories (SMT) solving. In addition to algorithm construction, another topic of interest is to develop a scientific understanding of the practical performance of automated reasoning algorithms, and to investigate relations between empirical observations and theoretical results in algorithm analysis and computational complexity theory. Yet another related area concerns methods of ensuring that algorithms compute provably correct results, which can be used to develop trustworthy solvers for automated reasoning and combinatorial optimization.

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the top 100 universities in the world. Lund Technical College (LTH) forms the Faculty of Engineering at Lund University, where research of the highest international standard is conducted.

The Department of Computer Science at LTH is a partner in the Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP), which is Sweden's largest ever individual research program and addresses research on artificial intelligence broadly construed, and also in the ELLIIT Excellence Centre focused on basic and applied research in information technologies. Furthermore, there are extensive collaborations across the Oresund Bridge with the Basic Algorithms Research Copenhagen (BARC) centre at the University of Copenhagen as well as with the IT University of Copenhagen (ITU) and the Technical University of Denmark (DTU).

The application deadline is January 26, 2024. See http://www.jakobnordstrom.se/openings/AsstProf-Lund-240126.html for more information and instructions how to apply. Informal enquiries are welcome and may be sent to jakob.nordstrom@cs.lth.se.

[DMANET] CFP: ESSA Workshop at IEEE IPDPS 2024 - Submissions due January 25, 2024

**[Apologies if you receive multiple copies of this email]**

*********************************************************************

Call for Papers

ESSA 2024: The 5th Workshop on Extreme-Scale Storage and Analysis
(Formerly High Performance Storage (HPS))

Held in conjunction with IEEE IPDPS 2024, San Francisco, CA, USA.

Workshop Date: May 2024

*********************************************************************

We are organizing the fifth edition of the International Workshop on
Extreme-Scale Storage and Analytics (ESSA) held in conjunction with
IPDPS since 2020 (formerly High Performance Storage (HPS) in 2020 and
2021). Advances in storage are becoming increasingly critical because
workloads on high performance computing (HPC) and cloud systems are
producing and consuming more data than ever before, and the situation
promises to only increase in future years. Additionally, the last
decades have seen relatively few changes in the structure of parallel
file systems, and limited interaction between the evolution of parallel
file systems, e.g., Lustre, GPFS, and I/O support systems that take
advantage of hierarchical storage layers, e.g., node local burst
buffers. However, recently the community has seen a large uptick in
innovations in data storage and processing systems as well as in I/O
support software for several reasons:

(1) Technology: The availability of an increasing number of persistent
solid-state storage and persistent storage-class memory technologies
that can replace either memory or disk are creating new opportunities
for the structure of storage systems.

(2) Performance requirements: Disk-based parallel file systems cannot
satisfy the performance needs of high-end systems. However, it is not
clear how solid-state storage and storage-class memory can best be used
to achieve the needed performance, so new approaches for using
solid-state storage and storage-class memory in HPC systems are being
designed and evaluated.

(3) Application evolution: Data analysis applications, including graph
analytics and machine learning, are becoming increasingly important both
for scientific computing and for commercial computing.  I/O is often a
major bottleneck for such applications, both in cloud and HPC
environments – especially when fast turnaround or integration of heavy
computation and analysis are required. Consequently, data storage, I/O
and processing requirements are evolving, as complex workflows involving
computation, analytics and learning emerge.

(4) Infrastructure evolution: HPC technology will not only be deployed
in dedicated supercomputing centers in the future. "Embedded HPC", "HPC
in the box", "HPC in the loop", "HPC in the cloud", "HPC as a service",
and "near-to-real-time simulation" are concepts requiring new
small-scale deployment environments for HPC. A federation of systems and
functions with consistent mechanisms for managing I/O, storage, and data
processing across all participating systems will be required to create
what is called a "computing continuum".

(5) Virtualization and disaggregation: As virtualization and
disaggregation become broadly used in cloud and HPC computing, the issue
of virtualized storage has increasing importance and efforts will be
needed to understand its implications for performance.

Our goals in the ESSA Workshop are to bring together expert researchers
and developers in data-related areas such as storage, I/O, processing
and analytics on extreme scale infrastructures including HPC systems,
clouds, edge systems or hybrid combinations of these, to discuss
advances and possible solutions to the new challenges we face. We expect
the ESSA Workshop to result in lively interactions over a wide range of
interesting topics.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
 - Extreme-scale storage systems (on high-end HPC infrastructures,
clouds, or hybrid combinations of them)
 - Extreme-scale parallel and distributed storage architectures
 - The synergy between different storage models (POSIX file system,
object storage, key-value, row-oriented, and column-oriented databases)
 - Structures and interfaces for leveraging persistent solid-state
storage and storage-class memory
 - High-performance I/O libraries and services
 - I/O performance in extreme-scale systems and applications
(HPC/clouds/edge)
 - Storage and data processing architectures and systems for hybrid
HPC/cloud/edge infrastructures, in support of complex workflows
potentially combining simulation and analytics
 - Integrating computation into the memory and storage hierarchy to
facilitate in-situ and in-transit data processing
 - I/O characterization and data processing techniques for application
workloads relying on extreme-scale parallel/distributed
machine-learning/deep learning
 - Tools and techniques for managing data movement among compute and
data intensive components
 - Data reduction and compression
 - Failure and recovery of extreme-scale storage systems
 - Benchmarks and performance tools for extreme-scale I/O
 - Language and library support for data-centric computing
 - Storage virtualization and disaggregation
 - Ephemeral storage media and consistency optimizations
 - Storage architectures and systems for scalable stream-based processing
 - Study cases of I/O services and data processing architectures in
support of various application domains (bioinformatics, scientific
simulations, large observatories, experimental facilities, etc.)

=============

Call for Papers

-------------------------------
*Special Session on **Partitioning and Clustering for Evolutionary
Computation*
-------------------------------
*IEEE World Congress on Computational Intelligence (IEEE WCCI)*
<https://2024.ieeewcci.org/>

*June 30th-July 5th, 2024.*Venue - Yokohama, Japan.
-------------------------------

**** Scope and Topics*

Partitioning points out techniques in which the samples are divided into
different groups in terms of some criteria. Clustering is a special type of
partitioning approach in which the samples are categorized into a group
according to their similarities. Partitioning can be applied for different
purposes in evolutionary computation, such as improving performance,
finding a promising region, solving a large-scale problem, and finding a
proper value for a specific parameter. Generally speaking, partitioning and
clustering can be seen in different levels of an algorithm. The goal of
this special session is the use of partitioning and clustering approaches
for evolutionary computation, covering all different evolutionary
paradigms. The aim is to investigate both the new theories and methods in
different evolutionary paradigms in different domains, such as image
processing, pattern recognition, scheduling, and transportation.
Authors are invited to submit their original and unpublished work to this
special session; the topics of interest (but not limited) are the following:

- Random partitioning in evolutionary computation
- Dynamic sub-swarm number strategy in evolutionary computation
- Seed and distance-based partitioning techniques in evolutionary
computation
- Hierarchical partitioning techniques in evolutionary computation
- Dynamic multi-population techniques in evolutionary computation
- Clustering-based multi-population techniques
- Multi-level clustering-based multi-population techniques
- Random partitioning with master-population
- Decomposition-based approaches in large-scale optimization
- Clustering approaches for finding proper parameter values
- Decomposition approaches in multi-objective evolutionary algorithms
- Decomposition approaches in Multi-modal multi-objective Evolutionary
Algorithms

[DMANET] CfP COORDINATION 2024 - 26th International Conference on Coordination Models and Languages

Call For Papers
COORDINATION 2024
26th International Conference on Coordination Models and Languages

Dates: June 18-20, 2024
Location: University of Groningen, The Netherlands
Website: https://www.discotec.org/2024/coordination

Paper submission deadline: February 09, 2024
Submission Link: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=coordination2024

Scope
========
Modern information systems rely increasingly on combining concurrent,
distributed, mobile, adaptive, reconfigurable, and heterogeneous
components. New
models, architectures, languages, and verification techniques are necessary
to
cope with the complexity induced by the demands of today's software
development.
Coordination languages have emerged as a successful approach, in that they
provide abstractions that cleanly separate behaviour from communication,
therefore increasing modularity, simplifying reasoning, and ultimately
enhancing
software development. Building on the success of the previous editions, this
conference provides a well-established forum for the growing community of
researchers interested in models, languages, architectures, and
implementation
techniques for coordination.

Main Topics
==============
Topics of interest encompass all areas of coordination, including (but not
limited to) coordination-related aspects of:

- Theoretical models and foundations for coordination:
component composition, concurrency, distribution, mobility; dynamic,
spatial
and probabilistic aspects of coordination; logic, types, semantics.
- Coordination of multi-agent and collective systems:
models, languages, infrastructures, self-adaptation, self-organisation,
distributed solving, collective intelligence and emerging behaviour.
- Coordination and modern distributed computing:
web services, microservices, peer-to-peer networks, grid computing,
context-awareness, ubiquitous computing, mobile computing, reversible
computing.
- Session-based programming:
models, languages, behavioural types, and tools.
- Models, languages, verification techniques, and tools for
interacting smart contracts and (blockchain-based) decentralised
applications.
- Languages, methodologies, and tools for secure coordination.
- Cybersecurity aspects of coordinated systems, coordinated approaches to
cybersecurity.
- Nature- and bio-inspired approaches to coordination.
- Specification, refinement, and analysis of architectures:
patterns and styles, verification of functional and non-functional
properties, including performance and security aspects.
- Dynamic software architectures:
distributed mobile code, configuration, reconfiguration, networked
computing,
parallel, high-performance and cloud computing.
- Coordination platforms for infrastructures of emergent new application
domains, like IoT, fog-, and edge-computing.
- Programming methodologies, languages, middleware, tools, and environments
for the development and verification of coordinated applications,
including
DevOps approaches.
- Coordination in business process management:
coordination models for business process management, process mining
techniques and tools for coordination models.
- Industrial relevance of coordination and software architectures:
programming in the large, domain-specific software architectures and
coordination models, industry-driven efforts in coordination and case
studies.
- Interdisciplinary aspects of coordination.

Invited Speaker
==================
Marieke Huisman, University of Twente, The Netherlands

Important dates
==================
- Abstract submission: February 02, 2024
- Paper submission: February 09, 2024
- Paper notification: March 29, 2024
- Camera-ready: April 24, 2024

Dates are Anywhere on Earth (AoE).

Submission
=============
We invite you to submit:

- Regular papers (7-15 pages, not counting references):
describing thorough and complete research results and experience
reports. In
a clear case of need, as an exception, authors may ask for permission via
email to the PC co-chairs to exceed the paper's max length by at most
10%,
under the condition that last-minute shortening would really damage the
clarity of the paper or result in non-submission. The authors must make a
draft of the paper available to the PC co-chairs via EasyChair.

- Short papers (4-6 pages, not counting references):
describing research in progress or opinion papers on the past of
COORDINATION research, on the current state of the art, or on prospects
for
the years to come.

- Survey papers (16-25 pages, not counting references):
describing important results and success stories related to the topics of
COORDINATION.

- Tool papers (4-15 pages, not counting references):
describing technological artefacts in the scope of the research topics
of
COORDINATION. Tool papers should provide a clear account of the tool's
functionality, discuss the tool's practical capabilities possibly with
reference to the type and size of problems it can handle, and, when
applicable, report on realistic case studies (possibly providing a
rigorous
experimental evaluation). Tool papers may also provide an account of the
theoretical foundations, including relevant citations, and present
design
and implementation concerns, possibly including software architecture
and
core data structures. Papers that present extensions to existing tools
should clearly describe the improvements or extensions with respect to
previously published versions of the tool, possibly providing data on
enhancements in terms of resources and capabilities. Papers may contain
a
link to a publicly downloadable MPEG-4 demo video of at most 10 minutes
length.

Artefacts
============
Following ACM's definition [1], an artefact is "a digital object that was
either
created by the authors to be used as part of the study or generated by the
experiment itself. For example, artifacts can be software systems, scripts
used
to run experiments, input datasets, raw data collected in the experiment, or
scripts used to analyze results".

To improve and reward reproducibility and to give more visibility and
credit to
the effort of tool developers in the COORDINATION community, authors of
submitted papers are invited to submit publicly available artefacts (using
permanent repositories such as Software Heritage, Zenodo, etc.), which will
be
associated with their paper for evaluation. Based on the result of the
artefact
evaluation, one or more badges may be applied to a paper. Specifically,
COORDINATION uses the EAPLS badging scheme [2], which in its own turn is
based
on and consistent with the ACM initiative.

Artefact submission is mandatory for tool papers and the result of the
artefact
evaluation will be considered in the tool paper's acceptance decision.
Instead,
artefact submission is optional for all the other paper categories and the
result of the artefact evaluation will not affect the paper's acceptance
decision but may affect the best paper selection.

Dates (AoE):
- Artefact submission: February 29, 2024
- Kick-the-tires phase:
- Problem reports from reviewers: 8 March, 2024
- Authors' response to reviewers: 15 March, 2024
- Artefact notification: March 29, 2024

[2] https://eapls.org/pages/artifact_badges

Proceedings
==============
The conference proceedings, consisting of accepted submissions from any
paper
category, will be published by Springer in LNCS-IFIP volumes.

Special issues
=================
After the conference, accepted papers (except for tool papers) selected from
COORDINATION and FORTE programmes will be invited to a special issue of the
Logical Methods in Computer Science journal. The paper submission deadline
is
planned for October/November 2024, while the notifications for the first
round
of reviews around February 2025. Selected accepted tool papers, instead,
will be
invited to a special issue of a reputable journal with a track dedicated to
software, like the Journal of Science of Computer Programming's Software
Track.

[DMANET] postdoc position

Call for a postdoc position on the topic "A dynamic analysis of
supply-chain networks and their disruption"

Supply chains are the intricate networks of organizations, people,
activities, information, and resources involved in the production and
distribution of goods and services. They are vulnerable to disruptions,
which can be caused by a wide range of factors and can have profound
consequences. Organizations are increasingly aware of the need to build
more resilient supply chains. In the face of disruption, supply chain
management is a critical function.

A supply chain is modeled as a network whose vertices are firms and whose
edges represent their interactions. The network evolves dynamically, and
may be affected by sudden disruptions. Many of the existing supply-chain
models are static and, when dealing with disruptions, compare pre- and
post-shock equilibria. In real life, the effects of disruption take time to
spread across the network. Understanding this temporal element is
fundamental for taking mitigating actions. The main goal of this project is
to study dynamic models of supply-chain disruption. The formal analysis of
this phenomenon will use tools from network theory, probability theory,
game theory, operations management, optimization, dynamical systems,
machine learning, data science. We are looking for a candidate who has a
strong expertise in at least one of the above fields.

Length of the position: 36 months
Gross annual salary: € 36.480,57
