[DMANET] CFP: Springer MONET Special Issue on Pervasive Healthcare

Call for Papers for
Springer Mobile Networks and Applications Special Issue on
"Wireless Technology for Pervasive Healthcare"

Since the start of this new century, the proportion of seniors has been
increasing more rapidly than other age groups while the newborn rate is
steadily decreasing. This global aging problem demands an increased focus
on preparing pervasive healthcare systems and applications deployed around
users and capable of remotely caring for them and improving their health
and well-being anywhere anytime. These systems and applications require a
sophisticated integration of microcircuit, medical sensing, and wireless
and mobile technologies. They largely benefit users by decreasing the
dependability on special caregivers and eventually reducing healthcare
expenses through a more efficient use of healthcare resources and an
earlier detection of life-threatening emergency situations. However, the
realization of pervasive healthcare sets some additional critical
requirements, e.g. realtimeness and fault-tolerance, and reliability,
security and efficiency challenges compared with traditional hospital-based
systems. Exploitation of Information and Communications Technologies as
well as Networking and Sensors Technologies will enable cost-effective and
efficient healthcare delivery, capable to deal with physical and logical
mobility of patients and devices.

The focus of this call is on theory and applications of Wireless
Technologies towards the definition of the Next Generation Pervasive
Healthcare. Original, unpublished contributions are solicited. Possible
topics of interest include, but are certainly not limited to the following:
* Wireless body area networks for remote healthcare monitoring
* Energy efficient sensing and communication for pervasive healthcare
* Reliable and fault-tolerant communications in pervasive healthcare
* Network protocols design and analysis for pervasive healthcare
* Data management and resource sharing for pervasive healthcare
* Mobile, social, context-aware computing for pervasive healthcare
* Integration of different wireless technologies for pervasive healthcare
* Remote diagnosis and patient management for pervasive healthcare
* Distributed multimedia services for pervasive healthcare
* Emergency detection and response for pervasive healthcare
* Trust, security, privacy, and QoS provisioning for pervasive healthcare
* System architectures, applications & prototypes for pervasive healthcare

[DMANET] CFP: IEEE TPDS Special Issue on Trust, Security and Privacy

Call for Papers for
IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems Special Issue on
"Trust, Security and Privacy in Parallel and Distributed Systems"

In modern computing paradigms, most computing systems, e.g. cluster
computing, grid computing, cloud computing, the Internet, telecommunication
networks, Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), and Machine-to-Machine
communication networks (M2M), are parallel and distributed systems. While
providing improved expandability, manageability, efficiency and
reliability, parallel and distributed systems increase their security
weaknesses to an unprecedented scale. As the system devices are widely
connected, their vulnerabilities are shared by the entire system. Because
tasks are allocated to, and information is exchanged among the system
devices that may belong to different users, trust, security and privacy
issues have yet to be resolved. The purpose of the proposed Special Issue
of IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems is to publish
recent advances in trust, security and privacy for emerging parallel and
distributed systems, with emphasis on the following aspects, but certainly
not limited to:

(1) Trust: policy semantics, metrics and models; trusted computing
platform; trusted network computing; trusted operating systems; trusted
software and applications; trust in cloud computing/CPS/M2M/social
networks; trust in e-commerce and e-government; trust in mobile and
wireless communications; risk and reputation management; survivable
computer systems/networks; and trust management.

(2) Security related issues: computer security; network security; database
security; Web applications security; security policy, model and
architecture; authentication, authorization and accounting; security in
cloud computing/CPS/M2M/social networks; security in mobile and wireless
communications; security in parallel and distributed systems; and
miscellaneous security issues.

(3) Privacy related issues: privacy in Web-based applications and services;
privacy in database systems; privacy in e-commerce and e-government;
privacy in network deployment and management; privacy in cloud computing/
CPS/M2M/social networks; privacy in mobile and wireless communications;
privacy in parallel and distributed systems; and miscellaneous privacy
issues.

[DMANET] WDPM@ICDM2012: Deadline extension

[Our apologies if you receive multiple copies of this message]

======================================================================
Deadline extention
2012 Workshop on Declarative Data Mining
December 10, 2012, Brussels, Belgium
http://liris.cnrs.fr/wdpm2012

Held in conjunction with ICDM 2012
The 12th IEEE International Conference on Data Mining
http://icdm2012.ua.ac.be

** Deadline extended to august 14th **

======================================================================

State-of-the-art systems for data mining contain highly efficient
algorithms, however, the tasks supported are often limited. More
specifically, they often lack support for solving enumeration problems
other than the pre-defined ones.
Their main weakness is at the language level, making it hard or
impossible to:
* add (or remove) constraints, or,
* support slight modifications of the problem statement.
This lack of flexibility and genericity is problematic and limits the
potential of existing data mining systems.

An emerging research trend is the combination of declarative modeling
languages with generic and efficient solving techniques. These
"declarative pattern mining" approaches are often inspired by
successful methodologies from other research fields, such as databases
and A.I.

This workshop aims to stimulate the cross-fertilization between data
mining, artificial intelligence, combinatorial algorithmic and
databases, to bring original solutions to fundamental data mining
problems.

The topics covered include (but are not limited to):
* High-level declarative languages (logical or algebraic) for
expressing pattern mining problems
* Complexity results and algorithms for pattern enumeration problems
* Constraint-based mining
* Mining complex patterns using constraint (logic) programming,
Satisfiability (modulo theory), Integer Linear programming, ...
* Modeling complex pattern problems using itemsets
* Classification of complex pattern mining problems
* Use cases of complex pattern mining
* Coupling database and pattern mining systems

PAPER SUBMISSION

All submissions will be handled electronically via CyberChair. Paper
submissions should be from 6 to 8 pages long in the IEEE 2-column
format. All papers will be reviewed by the program committee on the
basis of technical quality, relevance to the workshop topics,
originality, significance, and clarity. Papers that do not comply with
the Submission Guidelines will be rejected without review.

[DMANET] Postdoctoral fellowship at LIX, Ecole Polytechnique (France)

Postdoctoral fellowship on the topic "Optimality for Tough Combinatorial
Hydro Valley Problems"

A postdoctoral position for 12 months, financed by the Fondation
mathematique Jacques Hadamard through the Gaspard Monge Program for
Optimization and Operation Research (see,
http://www.fondation-hadamard.fr/PGMO ) will open at LIX, the Laboratory
for Computer Science at the Ecole Polytechnique (France), from September
2012. The project will also involve some researchers from EDF R&D.

In Energy Management, the Unit commitment problem aims at computing the
optimal production schedule for a hydro-thermal energy mix. This schedule
is then executed to meet customer demand in real time the next day. As
such, feasibility of the schedule is a key requirement. In order to solve
the unit-commitment problem efficiently in finite time, decomposition
methods based on Lagrangian relaxation are employed. These methods then
require that various smaller sub-problems are resolved quickly. One such a
sub-problem is optimization of a hydro valley (on a price signal). When
continuous, such a problem is easily solved to optimality by any current
LP solver. However, the introduction of combinatorial elements as a result
of the quest for feasible schedules, leads to far tougher hydro valley
problems. This is especially true for some of the larger French Hydro
valleys. Indeed, solving some of these up to several % of optimality might
already require several minutes. Multiplying this with the number of
iterations of the global decomposition schedule, one ends up with too much
computation time for the optimization software to be of operational use.
It therefore becomes apparent that efficient reformulations, or further
decomposition should be looked into. This is exactly the objective of the
current post-doc program.

The project involves people from the academia and from EDF:
- Claudia D'Ambrosio, CNRS-LIX, Ecole Polytechnique (France), project
leader - Frederic Roupin, LIPN, Paris 13 (France)
- Claudio Gentile, IASI, CNR (Italy)
- Wim van Ackooij, OSIRIS, EDF Research and Development (France)
- Grace Doukopoulos, OSIRIS, EDF Research and Development (France) -
Tomasz Simovic, OSIRIS, EDF Research and Development (France)

The candidate should preferably have: a PhD in Operations Research,
Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering with experience in mathematical
programming, and large-scale mixed integer linear problems; experience in
using and implementing through the most common OR tools (mathematical
programming languages, commercial and open-source optimization solvers,
C/C++ language).

The postdoctoral fellow will work at LIX, Ecole Polytechnique
(www.lix.polytechnique.fr) within the SYSMO team
(http://www.lix.polytechnique.fr/sysmo/) and will interact and collaborate
with all the people involved within the project.

The precise salary is difficult to evaluate. We know the gross salary, but
this also pays for benefits, taxes on the employer's side, taxes on the
employee's side, and revenue tax, which depends on the individual
situation. Experience tells us that the worst case for the net salary,
after all tax, is in the range 1900-2200EUR/month.

Please contact Claudia D'Ambrosio (dambrosio@lix.polytechnique.fr) for
questions and to apply for the position. If you are interested and are
going to participate to ISMP 2012, feel free to contact Claudia D'Ambrosio
to set up a meeting in Berlin.

The required documents (in pdf format) are:
- Detailed CV including a complete list of publications.
- PhD thesis.
- Motivation letter.

[DMANET] PhD position in Algorithmic Game Theory at CWI, Amsterdam

The Algorithms, Combinatorics and Optimization Group (PNA1) at the Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) in Amsterdam invites applications for a

PhD position (four years) in Algorithmic Game Theory.

Founded in 1946, the Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) is the national research institute for mathematics and computer science in the Netherlands. It is located in the Science Park Amsterdam and is part of the "Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research" (NWO). The institute is internationally focused and renowned for its high quality research. Over 160 researchers conduct pioneering research and share their acquired knowledge with society. More than 30 researchers are employed as professors at universities. The institute has generated twenty-one spin-off companies.

CWI maintains excellent relations with industry and the academic world, both in the Netherlands as well as abroad. The library and computing facilities are first-rate. CWI's non-scientific services include career planning, training and courses, and assistance in finding housing.

The research group "Algorithms, Combinatorics and Optimization" in the cluster "Probability, Networks and Algorithms" has a vacancy for a talented

**PhD student**

on the subject Social Interactions in Games.

Research group:

The Algorithms, Combinatorics and Optimization Group (PNA1) performs fundamental research, focusing on the development of new efficient algorithmic methods for problems in combinatorics, optimization and algorithmic game theory. The group's research is motivated by real-world applications. The techniques that the group develops make use of tools from mathematics, operations research, computer science, game theory and logic.

The PhD candidate will be part of the Algorithmic Game Theory Group within PNA1, which focuses on interdisciplinary research at the interface of game theory, optimization and algorithms.

Job description:

Many real-world applications are complex and distributed in nature in that they involve a multitude of independent decision makers who attempt to achieve their own goals. It is well-known that strategic choices often result in outcomes that are inefficient for the society as a whole. Algorithmic game theory has shed new light on various aspects of such situations of strategic interaction. However, most studies assume that the decision makers correspond to "isolated" entities who make their choices based on purely selfish incitements. This assumption is overly simplistic: Decision makers are often motivated by other-regarding preferences such as altruism, spite or fairness and typically exhibit complex social relationships. The goal of the project is to gain an accurate understanding of such social interactions in games.

Relevant research aspects of the PhD project include (but are not limited to) inefficiency of equilibria, complexity of games, algorithmic mechanism design, etc.

The PhD candidate will be given the possibility to pursue part of her/his studies abroad, to attend international doctoral schools, conferences and workshops, and to participate in the national PhD programme organized by the LNMB (Dutch Network on the Mathematics of Operations Research).

Requirements:

The PhD candidate is required to have a master's degree in mathematics or computer science and should have an excellent background in combinatorial optimization and algorithms. Ideally, the candidate has already worked in the area of algorithmic game theory and demonstrated the ability to pursue independent research. Candidates are expected to have an excellent command of English, and good academic writing and presentation skills.

Terms and conditions:

The terms of employment are in accordance with the Dutch Collective Labor Agreement for Research Institutes ("CAO-onderzoeksinstellingen"). Moreover, CWI offers attractive working conditions, including flexible scheduling and help with housing for expat employees. CWI also offers excellent and flexible terms of employment, including an employee pension fund.

The gross monthly salary, for an employee on a full time basis, is 2,057 Euro during the first year and increases to 2,636 Euro over the four year period. Expats may apply for a profitable tax ruling, which, if approved by the tax authorities, would mean not having to pay taxes over 30% of your income.

Information:

Additional information can be obtained from Prof. dr. Guido Schaefer, email g.schaefer@cwi.nl. Please see also our website http://www.cwi.nl/research-groups/algorithms-combinatorics-and-optimization.

Application:

Please send your application before September 15, 2012 to: pd@cwi.nl.

Applications should include a detailed CV, a motivation letter, a list of your M.SC. courses and grades, a copy of your master thesis, and a list of publications (if applicable). Please also mention at least two references.

Additional information about working at CWI can be seen in the video "A Fundamental Difference": http://www.cwi.nl/general/movies-about-cwi or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2e-VYBdBKis

[DMANET] Ph. Flajolet School on Analytic Combinatorics and the Analysis of Algorithms (Jan. 4-5, 2013, New Orleans)

We apologize for multiple postings.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT

Ph. Flajolet School on Analytic Combinatorics
and the Analysis of Algorithms (ANALCO School 2013)

January 4-5, 2013
New Orleans, USA
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Ph. Flajolet School on Analytic Combinatorics and the Analysis of
Algorithms (ANALCO School 2013) builds upon the experience of two
previous schools on the same topics held in Maresias (Brazil) in 2008
and in Vienna (Austria) in 2010. Those previous schools (AofA School
2008, AofA School 2010) were held in combination with the
International Meetings on the Analysis of Algorithms (AofA) those
years. In this edition, the school is held in combination with ANALCO
2013 (January 6, 2013) and SODA 2013 (January 6-8, 2013),
with a clear vocation of continuity to become a regular
scientific event.
