Scope and objectives

In the light of the continuous growth of urban areas with respect to population and size, urban transportation systems are facing significant challenges such as traffic congestion, overcrowding, demand management and service availability. Sustainable transportation makes a positive contribution in addressing those challenges, as to its social, economic and environmental impact. It provides affordable access to all groups of citizens, promotes green vehicles, public transportation, new sharing paradigms like vehicle sharing and carpooling and encourages non-motorized modes of transport such as walking and biking. Policy makers, urban traffic planners and transportation system operators realize the need for sustainable transportation, robust transportation policies and demand management strategies. Along this line, they work towards alleviating congestion, making public transport more attractive, maintaining a high level of operational efficiency in the transportation system, responding -and, if possible, predicting and preventing- traffic incidents.

Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) aim at providing sophisticated management models and tools across all transport modes, traffic management, new-generation systems for infrastructure charging, and innovative real time travel information services. ITS facilitate city authorities and transportation professionals realize their visions as regards implementing and managing multimodal transportation networks and enabling citizens to be informed and make better use of these networks. It is a matter of critical importance for such systems and tools to scale so as to enable cities with different budgets to deploy them.

The ISUT workshop aims at soliciting original research related to frameworks, algorithmic solutions, applications and case studies in the scope of ITS and sustainable mobility in urban environments.

AIM OF THE SCHOOL

The school offers the unique opportunity to learn about recent

Scope
ROADEF2017 conference (http://roadef2017.event.univ-lorraine.fr/) is the
18th edition of the annual conference of the French Society of
Operational Research and Decision Aid (Metz, 22-23-24 February 2017).
The scientific program of this conference includes about 250
contributions and different keynote speeches provided by outstanding
experts. This event has attracted participants from different countries.
This special issue is devoted to ROADEF2017 but the submission is also
extended to any high-quality paper non-presented at the conference.
According to the journal standards, a new review process will be
organized and applied to all the papers submitted to this special issue.

The scope of this special issue is related to the Operational Research
(OR) domain. Both contributions to methodologies and applications are
welcome.

This special issue attempts to present some recent advances in OR and to
publish original papers that contribute to the theory, the solution
methods, and the related applications. The topics include but are not

Recent Advances in Decomposition Methods
for Hard Optimization Problems

Motivation

Divide and conquer, from Latin divide et impera, is one of the key
techniques for tackling combinatorial optimization problems. It relies on
the idea of decomposing complex problems into a sequence of subproblems
that are then easier to handle. Decomposition techniques (such as
Dantzig-Wolfe, Lagrangian, or Benders decomposition) are extremely
effective in a wide range of applications, including cutting & packing,
production & scheduling, routing & logistics, telecommunications,
transportation and many others. Moreover, decomposition techniques are
playing an important role in many different fields of mixed-integer linear
and non-linear optimization, multi objective optimization, optimization
under uncertainty, bilevel optimization, etc. Despite the tremendous amount
of research on these topics, the mathematical optimization community is
constantly faced with new challenges coming from theoretical aspects and
real world applications that require the development of new advanced tools.

This special issue will be a point of reference for researchers and
practitioners that want to learn more about the recent advances in
decomposition techniques for hard combinatorial optimization problems. We
solicit original and high-quality papers presenting the latest improvements
in the field.

The purpose of this issue is to provide a view on state of the art
decomposition methods in the field of mathematical optimization. We will
consider high-quality manuscripts addressing the development of new
theoretical insights, algorithmic approaches and computational studies in
the context of exact and heuristic methods based on decomposition
techniques.

Scheduling is an important problem arising in many different settings
and environments. A wide range of techniques are usually employed to
solve such problems, most notably heuristics and metaheuristics for
complex and large instances. We are organizing a specific session on
scheduling in the next Metaheuristics International Conference (MIC) to
be held in Barcelona from the 4th to the 7th of July, 2017.

electronic, in PDF format, using the easychair system.

S1) Original research contributions for publication in the conference
proceedings of a maximum of 10 pages.

S2) Extended abstracts of work-in-progress of a maximum of 3 pages.

S3) High-quality manuscripts that have recently, within the last six
months, been submitted or accepted for journal publication.

All contributed paper submissions will be peer reviewed. All submitted
papers must follow the submitted guidelines below. Accepted papers will
be published in the online proceedings that will be available at the
conference. Accepted contributions of categories S1 and S2 will be
published in the MIC 2017 conference proceedings. Accepted contributions
of category S3 will be orally presented at the conference, but not be
included into the conference proceedings.

Authors are invited to submit papers to both the general and the special
sessions. During submission authors will be required to specify which
track they are submitting their paper to. Submitted papers (both regular
and special sessions) must be formatted according to MIC/MAEB 2017
guidelines. Full instructions including formatting guidelines and
electronic templates (both LaTeX and Microsoft Word) will be available
soon. Submission is only electronic, in PDF format, using the easychair

At least one author of each accepted paper and poster is required to

ABOUT THE PROJECT

A fundamental difficulty in developing offshore renewable energy (ORE) sites is that the uncertain environmental conditions make accurately assessing the life-cycle costs of a site a challenging problem. In particular, logistical operations throughout the life of a site are subject to uncertain operating conditions, and it is therefore difficult to plan and schedule these operations, and to estimate the resulting durations and costs. Similarly, the generating potential throughout the operation of a given site is dependent on the realised weather as well as the availability of each asset, and uncertainties in each of these make it difficult to accurately predict the profits to be gained from energy production. Decisions on aspects such as the size, layout and composition of a site are therefore difficult to accurately quantify and compare.

This project will aim to develop optimisation models to identify the best strategy for designing an ORE site. A complimentary PhD project in the Dept. of Naval Architecture, Ocean and Marine Engineering at Strathclyde will take an alternative approach to the problem, and as both projects progress in parallel, mutual developments will feed into both projects. This will provide a cross-disciplinary approach to a challenging research problem with potential industry impact.

FUNDING AND ELIGIBILITY

Funding is available to cover 3 years of tuition fees at the UK/EU level, plus a tax free stipend of £14,653 for 2017-18, and projected to increase to £15,020 for 2018-19 and £15,395 for 2019-20. The student will be given opportunities to attend a conference and/or specialized training every year.

The PhD project requires a highly numerate graduate with interests in renewable energy. Candidates should have at least a strong Honours degree or equivalent (a strong 2:1 Honours degree, or a B.Sc. degree with 3.3 GPA in a 4.0 system), or preferably a Master's degree in a quantitative discipline such as industrial engineering, operations research, mathematics or computer science (amongst others). Experience in programming and fundamental knowledge in optimization are not essential but highly desirable. Candidates who are not native English speakers will be required to provide evidence for their English skills (such as by IELTS or similar tests that are approved by UKVI, or a degree completed in an English speaking country).

ABOUT PARSOCIAL
Computational methods to represent, model and analyze problems using social
information have come a long way in the last decade. Computational methods,
such as social network analysis, have provided exciting insights into how
social information can be utilized to better understand social processes,
and model the evolution of social systems over time. We have also seen a
rapid proliferation of sensor technologies, such as smartphones and medical
sensors, for collecting a wide variety of social data, much of it in real
time. Meanwhile, the emergence of parallel architectures, in the form of
multi-core/many-core processors, and distributed platforms, such as
MapReduce, have provided new approaches for large-scale modeling and
simulation, and new tools for analysis. These two trends have dramatically
broadened the scope of computational social systems research, and are
enabling researchers to tackle new challenges. These challenges include
modeling of real world scenarios with dynamic and real-time data, and
formulating rigorous computational frameworks to embed social and
behavioral theories. The IEEE Workshop on Parallel and Distributed
Processing for Computational Social Systems (ParSocial) provides a platform
to bring together interdisciplinary researchers from areas, such as
computer science, social sciences, applied mathematics and computer
engineering, to showcase innovative research in computational social
systems that leverage the emerging trends in parallel and distributed
processing, computational modeling, and high performance computing.

The papers selected for ParSocial will be published in the workshop

[DMANET] PhD positions in Algorithmic Game Theory and Approximation Algorithms

The computer science department of Drexel University is offering PhD
positions on the topics of Algorithmic Game Theory and Approximation
Algorithms, under the supervision of Dr. Vasilis Gkatzelis. The positions
are fully funded for 5 years, starting September 2017.

The department is part of the newly formed College of Computing and
Informatics (http://drexel.edu/cci/) of Drexel University, located in the
university city district of Philadelphia, which is also the home of the
University of Pennsylvania. Apart from collaborating with relevant faculty
at Drexel, a successful candidate will also have the opportunity to
collaborate with theory faculty at Penn (http://theory.cis.upenn.edu/).

2018 FLAJOLET LECTURE PRIZE

Call for Nominations: the due date is 28 February 2017

The Philippe Flajolet Lecture Prize for outstanding contributions to
analytic combinatorics and analysis of algorithms is awarded every two
years by the Analysis of Algorithms (AofA) community that owes its
existence to Philippe Flajolet. The first Flajolet Lecture was
presented by D. E. Knuth at the 2014 AofA International Conference on
Probabilistic, Combinatorial and Asymptotic Methods for the Analysis of
Algorithms, Paris, France, and the second one by Bob Sedgewich at the
2016 AofA Conference in Krakow, Poland.

The prize is named in honor and recognition of the extraordinary
accomplishments of late Philippe Flajolet, who spent most of his
scientific life at INRIA, France. Philippe is best known for
fundamental advances in mathematical methods for the analysis of
algorithms. His research laid the foundation of a subfield of
mathematics, now known as analytic combinatorics. Analytic
combinatorics is a modern basis for the quantitative study of
combinatorial structures (such as words, trees, mappings, and graphs),
with applications to probabilistic study of algorithms that are based on
these structures. It also strongly influences research in other
scientific domains, such as statistical physics, computational biology,
and information theory. Flajolet's work takes the field forward by
introducing original approaches in combinatorics based on two types of
methods: symbolic and analytic. The symbolic side is based on the
automation of decision procedures in combinatorial enumeration to derive
characterizations of generating functions. The analytic side treats
those functions as functions in the complex plane and leads to precise
characterization of limit distributions. Beyond these foundational
contributions, Philippe's research opened new avenues in various domains
of applied computer science, including streaming algorithms,
communication protocols, database access methods, data mining, symbolic
manipulation, text-processing algorithms, and random generation.

The next Flajolet Lecture will be delivered at the 2018 AofA Conference
in Uppsala, Sweden. Nominations are due on 28 February 2017. The winner
will be selected by a Prize Committee consisting of:

The nomination letter should summarize his/her contributions in one or
two pages. All nominations should be sent to Michael Drmota at
michael.drmota@tuwien.ac.at .

In selecting the Flajolet-Prize winner, the Committee will pay
particular attention to a sustained record of high-impact, seminal
contributions to the research areas most directly impacted by the work
of Flajolet: the foundations of analysis of algorithms and/or analytic
combinatorics. The selection may also be based partly on educational
accomplishments and contributions such as fundamental textbooks and
high-quality students. The final selection will be approved by the
Steering Committee of the AofA.

There has been tremendous interest in deep learning across many fields of
study. Recently, these techniques have gained popularity in the field of
music. Projects such as Magenta (Google's Brain Team's music generation
project), Jukedeck and others testify to their potential.

While humans can rely on their intuitive understanding of musical patterns
and the relationships between them, it remains a challenging task for
computers to capture and quantify musical structures. Recently, researchers
have attempted to use deep learning models to learn features and
relationships that allow us to accomplish tasks in music transcription,
audio feature extraction, emotion recognition, music recommendation, and
automated music generation.

With this workshop we aim to advance the state-of-the-art in machine
intelligence for music by bringing together researchers in the field of
music and deep learning. This will enable us to critically review and
discuss cutting-edge-research so as to identify grand challenges, effective
methodologies, and potential new applications.


Topics

Papers and abstracts on the application of deep learning techniques on
music are welcomed, including but not limited to:

Submissions of Papers

Papers of up to 5 pages using the following template are welcomed for a
talk. Submissions will be evaluated according to their originality,
technical soundness, and relevance to the workshop. The guidelines outlined
in the workshop's latex template

Contributions should be in PDF format and submitted to

Submissions of Abstracts

Structured abstracts of max 2 pages can be submitted for a shorter talk.
The abstracts should follow the same template as the papers and will be
included in the proceedings. Abstracts should be in PDF format and
submitted to d.herremans@qmul.ac.uk with the subject line: [DLM17 abstract
submission]. Abstracts will be peer-reviewed and included in the
proceedings of the workshop.


Special Issue in Journal

Authors will be invited to submit a full paper version of their extended
abstract for a special issue in an indexed journal. More details on this
will be available soon.
