[DMANET] Research Fellow in Operational Research/Management Science, University of Southampton

Research Fellow in Operational Research/Management Science

Salary GBP27,428 - GBP33,734 per annum

School of Mathematics/School of Management

An 18-month postdoctoral Research Fellow post within the Schools of Mathematics and Management is available from 1 April 2011 or as soon as possible thereafter. You will work on scheduling and optimisation applied in the railway industry as part of an EPSRC-funded project OCCASION (Overcoming Capacity Constraints7A Simulation Integrated with Optimisation for Nodes). This is a collaborative project between the Transport Research Group in Civil Engineering, the Operational Research Group in the School of Mathematics and the Management Science Group in the School of Management.

You should have a good track record of research in Operational Research/Management Science with expertise in at least one of the areas: discrete optimisation; scheduling; applications in transport. You should either have a PhD, or have a reasonable expectation of such an award in the near future, and should be able to demonstrate a high-quality research track-record. Proficiency in computer programming is also required.

You will work on two main research areas of the OCCASION project. First, production scheduling techniques will be applied to rail scheduling, with a specific emphasis on shifting bottleneck procedures and local search approaches. Second, multicommodity network design formulations will be developed for (re)designing scheduled services on the rail network, the solutions of which will require efficient algorithms to be devised based on integer programming techniques.

Informal enquiries can be made at any time to Dr Tolga Bektas, email: T.Bektas@soton.ac.uk, tel. +44 (0)23 8059 8969 or Professor Chris Potts, email: C.N.Potts@soton.ac.uk, tel. +44 (0)23 8059 3651.

Please apply on-line using the link below, or call 023 8059 2750. The closing date for applications is 16th March 2011 at 12.00 noon. Please quote reference number 5305-11-J in all correspondence.
