CALL FOR PAPERS

[Scope]

Global warming and climate change have been a growing worldwide concern. Six sources, i.e., transportation, power, buildings, industry, agriculture and forestry, and land use, have been identified as major contributors to the rise of global carbon dioxide (CO2). The mobile industry is seen as a potential enabler to reduce greenhouse gases contributed by these six sources provided that appropriate measures are implemented. On the other hand, the mobile industry itself will also contribute to CO2 emission through network operations, mobile equipments, etc. To meet the requirement of low-carbon economy development, it is necessary to reduce the operation expenditure or energy consumption of mobile networks, while maintaining acceptable quality of service. This conference will explore and explain the scope and challenges of designing, building, and deploying GreeNets. In this regard, the conference aims to establish a forum to bring together research professionals from di
verse fields including green mobile networks, system architectures, networking & communication protocols, applications, test-bed and prototype, traffic balance and energy-efficient cooperation transmission, system and application issues related to GreeNets.

In the last years, the increasing social awareness about the need for containing energy consumption within sustainable rates has caught the interest of both the industrial and academic communities. In this scenario, Internet - and more generally ICT - may play a twofold role, being both a significant energy consumer and a potential actor in steering a more clever usage of energy resources.

Both aspects of the problem raise interesting scientific challenges, and require a comprehensive effort and inter-disciplinary research at all levels of abstraction. The goal of this conference is to bring together people from different research areas, and provide a forum to exchange ideas, discuss solutions, and share experiences among researchers, professionals, and application developers both from industry and academia.

Original papers addressing both theoretical and practical aspects of energy-awareness for Internet-based systems, and the design of ICT solutions for eco-sustainability are solicited. Papers of interest should point out the expected long-term benefits to eco-sustainability.

Topics of interest include but are not limited to:

- Green Internet

[DMANET] PhD Scholarship on Bio-Inspired Computation at the University of Sheffield, UK

The Department of Computer Science at the University of Sheffield is
offering a fully funded 3 year PhD studentship on theoretical
foundations of Bio-Inspired Computation.

Bio-inspired computation includes general-purpose metaheuristics like
evolutionary algorithms, ant colony optimisation and particle swarm
optimisation. The idea is to mimic powerful mechanisms from nature, such
as the natural evolution of species or the collective intelligence of a
swarm of animals, and to apply these mechanisms for solving complex
optimisation problems. Bio-inspired algorithms have been applied
successfully in various engineering disciplines, but their theoretical
foundation is still very limited.

In recent years theoretical analyses have emerged that study the running
time of bio-inspired algorithms. The goal is to rigorously estimate the
expected time until such an algorithm finds a good or optimal solution
for interesting problems. This is done using mathematical techniques
from the analysis of randomised algorithms, probability theory and
computational complexity. The results allow for insights into the
working principles of bio-inspired metaheuristics, enable the assessment
of parameter choices and design aspects, and contribute to a sorely
needed theoretical foundation.

This studentship offers a valuable opportunity to work within a very
active, challenging, and exciting field at the intersection of
computational complexity and bio-inspired computation.

Funding Notes:

The award covers UK fees and a stipend at the standard UK research rate
of £13,590 per annum.

Applicants should have, or expect to achieve, a minimum of an
upper-second-class Honours degree (2.1 or above) or a Master´s degree in
Computer Science, Mathematics, or related disciplines (or equivalent).
The project is mathematically challenging. Expertise with computational
complexity, probability theory and bio-inspired computation is
desirable. Good analytical thinking and an interest in these areas are
essential.

UK applicants and EU applicants are eligible for a full scholarship
award. Non-EU applicants cannot be funded and are not eligible to apply.

- Power-aware Internet applications
- Energy-efficient network architecture and protocols
- Green wireless networking
- Energy-efficient network technologies
- Cross-layer optimization for green networking

[DMANET] New book about TURING and DIJKSTRA

************ Book announcement ***********

`The Dawn of Software Engineering: from Turing to Dijkstra'  --- by Edgar Daylight

Published by Lonely Scholar: www.lonelyscholar.com/dawn

"A rich and fascinating account of the time when software engineering was a compelling intellectual discipline at the center of computer science."
--- John C. Reynolds, CMU.

"wonderfully novel, very readable, and most engaging"
--- Grady Booch, IBM Fellow

Did Alan Turing play a major role in the advent of the all-purpose computer? Did Turing Award winners, like Edsger W. Dijkstra, depend on his famous accomplishments? In his well-researched book Edgar G. Daylight deromanticizes Turing's & logic's role in the history of computing. Dijkstra's pioneering work in compilers lies at the heart of modern-day computers. The book vividly describes how & why Dijkstra's ideas stood out among those of his contemporaries.

Includes interviews with Turing Award winners Tony Hoare, Niklaus Wirth, Peter Naur, and Barbara Liskov.

Available from most bookstores, including Amazon (www.amazon.com/dp/9491386026) and Barnes & Noble (www.barnesandnoble.com/w/books/1109990974).

EasyChair: https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=sss2012

The SSS symposium is a prestigious international forum for researchers and
practitioners in the design and development of fault-tolerant distributed
systems with self-* properties, such as self-stabilizing, self-configuring,
self-organizing, self-managing, self-repairing, self-healing,
self-optimizing,
self-adaptive, and self-protecting systems. Research in distributed systems
is now
at a crucial point in its evolution, marked by the importance of dynamic
systems such as cloud networks, social networks, peer-to-peer networks,
large-scale
wireless sensor networks, mobile ad hoc networks, etc., and many new
applications such
as grid and web services, banking and e-commerce, e-health and robotics,
aerospace and avionics, automotive, industrial process control, etc. have
joined the traditional applications of distributed systems.

The conference provides a wide spectrum of topics, covered in the following
tracks:
* Self-Stabilization
* Ad-Hoc and Sensor Networks
* Fault-Tolerance and Dependable Systems
* Safety and Security
* Cloud Computing
* Formal Methods
* Social Networks

PAPER SUBMISSION
================

Papers must be submitted in PDF format and be prepared using the LNCS style.
Detailed instructions for submitting papers will be available later.
Two types of papers can be submitted: Regular Papers and Brief
Announcements.
Submissions for regular papers should be no longer than 15 pages
(including the title, authors, abstract, figures, and references) in LNCS
style; a submission may have an appendix of at most two pages beyond the
15 page limit. Brief announcements are restricted to two pages using the
LNCS style, with no appendix. Submissions deviating from these guidelines
will be rejected without consideration of their merits.
If requested by the authors on the submission system, a regular submission
that is not selected for a regular presentation will also be considered for
a brief announcement. Such a request will not affect consideration of the
paper for a regular paper.
A paper submitted at this forum is expected to be original research not
previously published. A contribution can be submitted to one track only and
may not be concurrently submitted to another conference, workshop, or
journal.

===========
PUBLICATION
===========

The proceedings of the conference will be published in the
Springer Verlag Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) series.
A special journal issue for selected SSS 2012 papers is under negotiation;
please see the website for more information.

==================================
BEST PAPER AND BEST STUDENT AWARDS
==================================

The program committee will select two papers for best paper and best
student paper awards. A paper is eligible for the best student paper
award if at least one of its authors is a full-time student at the time of
submission, and if the student made a major contribution to the paper.
This must be indicated by marking an appropriate box in
the submission system.
