[DMANET] A PostDoc Position at AOC team - LIPN and AirLiquide

University Paris 13 and AirLiquide are offering a postdoctoral position
in integer
programming. The candidate will join the research team AOC of LIPN for
working on exacts and heuristics methods for the Inventory Routing
Problem.
The position is open to international candidates. Further information
and
application details can be found here:

http://www-lipn.univ-paris13.fr/~wolfler/Post-doc Mission Air Liquide
July 13th.pdf

CONTEXT
========

Air Liquide has developed an optimization tool to optimize daily bulk
deliveries
around the world. The tool is based on a subsequent model that solves
an Inventory
Routing Problem (IRP). The algorithm decides when and how much product
to
deliver to each customer in a dispatch zone and builds routes for the
necessary
deliveries. This tool allows Operations teams to optimize the liquid
distribution by
minimizing different costs and taking into account several specific
constraints related
to Air Liquide business while ensuring a good customer service level.

OBJECTIVES AND ORGANIZATION
=============================

The objective of the postdoctoral mission is to challenge the current
algorithm. In
fact, it's based on a heuristic approach that runs within a limited
computational time
in order to find a feasible solution of good quality. Air Liquide wants
to develop an
exact (or pseudo-exact) method and lower bounds to qualify the
convergence and
the optimality of the current heuristic.

The postdoctoral mission will be jointly managed by Air Liquide R&D
team and by
AOC team (Algorithms and Combinatorial Optimization) of Computer
Science Lab (LIPN) of
Paris Nord University represented by Pr. Roberto Wolfler Calvo.

The mission will last one year, preferably to be started in September
2012.

REQUIRED PROFILE
=================

- PhD scientist / researcher specialized in Vehicle Routing Problem and
Recognized competency in Operations Research and Computer science

[DMANET] EU project NEMOH

To whom it may concern, my name is Antonella Longo, working at the
Istituto Nazionale di
Geofisica e Vulcanologia, in Pisa (Italy). My group is recruiting young
graduated students to
work on the development of a FSI numerical code.

The research contract is provided in the frame of an European Community
Project, called NEMOH (www.nemoh-itn.eu), that is coordinated
by our group in Pisa.

By request I can send the pdf of (i) the NEMOH brochure and (ii) the
project leaflet. Very briefly, NEMOH is a network of highly qualified
European fellowship positions, including 13 partners from
8 European countries. The focus is on quantitative volcanology,
including numerical modelling and simulation of fluid-structure
(magma-rock) interaction dynamics. The network will organize during next
4 years a number of activities including background and specialized
schools, short courses, blind test exercises, etc.
Other specialized courses are offered at the local level. The official
language is obviously English.
Any additional information is on the project website: www.nemoh-itn.eu

Regarding the net income of the successfully recruited student, this
will be in the range 2800 - 3000 euros per month (the gross salary is >
50,000 euros per year). The position we are offering is for a three-year
employment. A Ph.D position in Geophysics is also offered to interested
students (but not mandatory in the contract), subject to separate
evaluation (we've set up a specific agreement with the University for that).

The student will spend from 3 to 10 months (to be agreed upon with
him/her) out of three years at other institutions in Italy or abroad
(even at your institute, what would be great!)

Regarding the numerical code to be developed, this will represent an
extension of the GALES code that I have developed during last years.
GALES (GAlerkin LEast Squares) is based on the papers n.X by Shakib,
Hughes and Johan (CMAME, 1991) and Hauke and Hughes (CMAME, 1998).
It is solved in primitive pressure variables, with a Newton-Raphson
iteration. By request I will send the last two paper we have produced.
The first one is the code description that is press on Computer &
Fluids. The second one is an application in volcanic environments. A
series of classic benchmarks solved with GALES can be found at
http://www.pi.ingv.it/~longo/gales/gales.html.

The code developments to be performed should include fluid-structure
interaction, and make the code able to solve the coupled dynamics of
magma and country rocks in volcanic environments (besides being first
validated on classic benchmarks from the general literature). That would
allow us to directly relate geophysical signals measured at volcanoes
(ground displacements, seismicity, gravity changes, tilt variations,
etc.) to underground magma dynamics, providing us with a
state-of-the-art method to interpret pre-eruptive observations
and forecast volcanic hazards.

The skills needed for the code development are the knowledge of
numerical analysis,
C++ object oriented programming, MPI and meta programming template.

In case you need further information, do not hesitate to contact me.
Useless to say that we would highly appreciate a brilliant candidate
recommended from you.

Many thanks in advance for your kind attention.

Best regards,

Antonella Longo

[DMANET] CFP: "Graph Algorithms" special issue of Algorithms

CALL FOR PAPERS:
"Graph Algorithms" -- A special issue of Algorithms (ISSN 1999-4893)

This special issue of Algorithms is devoted to the design and analysis
of algorithms for solving combinatorial problems of a theoretical or
practical nature involving graphs, with a focus on computational
complexity.
Because of their simplicity and generality, graphs have been used for a
long time in many different areas of science and engineering, e.g., to
describe how objects such as the atoms of a molecule are connected or to
express various types of constraints such as precedence constraints in a
complex manufacturing process.
More recently, graphs have found new applications in emerging research
fields like social network analysis, the design of robust computer
network topologies, frequency allocation in wireless networks, and
bioinformatics (i.e., to represent metabolic pathways, protein-protein
interactions, evolutionary relationships, or other kinds of structured
biological information).
The amount of data in such applications can be enormous, and therefore,
the resulting graphs may be huge, which motivates further development of
fast and space-efficient algorithms in the near future for solving
various (old and new) graph problems exactly or approximately.
We hereby invite papers presenting original research on graph algorithms
to this special issue and hope to receive many high-quality submissions.

[DMANET] CFP: Declarative Pattern Mining Workshop@ICDM2012

[Our apologies if you receive multiple copies of this message]

======================================================================
Call for Papers
2012 Workshop on Declarative Data Mining
December 10, 2012, Brussels, Belgium
http://liris.cnrs.fr/wdpm2012

Held in conjunction with ICDM 2012
The 12th IEEE International Conference on Data Mining
http://icdm2012.ua.ac.be
======================================================================

State-of-the-art systems for data mining contain highly efficient
algorithms, however, the tasks supported are often limited. More
specifically, they often lack support for solving enumeration problems
other than the pre-defined ones.
Their main weakness is at the language level, making it hard or
impossible to:
* add (or remove) constraints, or,
* support slight modifications of the problem statement.
This lack of flexibility and genericity is problematic and limits the
potential of existing data mining systems.

An emerging research trend is the combination of declarative modeling
languages with generic and efficient solving techniques. These
"declarative pattern mining" approaches are often inspired by
successful methodologies from other research fields, such as databases
and A.I.

This workshop aims to stimulate the cross-fertilization between data
mining, artificial intelligence, combinatorial algorithmic and
databases, to bring original solutions to fundamental data mining
problems.

The topics covered include (but are not limited to):
* High-level declarative languages (logical or algebraic) for
expressing pattern mining problems
* Complexity results and algorithms for pattern enumeration problems
* Constraint-based mining
* Mining complex patterns using constraint (logic) programming,
Satisfiability (modulo theory), Integer Linear programming, ...
* Modeling complex pattern problems using itemsets
* Classification of complex pattern mining problems
* Use cases of complex pattern mining
* Coupling database and pattern mining systems

PAPER SUBMISSION

All submissions will be handled electronically via CyberChair. Paper
submissions should be from 6 to 8 pages long in the IEEE 2-column
format. All papers will be reviewed by the program committee on the
basis of technical quality, relevance to the workshop topics,
originality, significance, and clarity. Papers that do not comply with
the Submission Guidelines will be rejected without review.

[DMANET] Call for Participants: ICORD Workshop, Problem Structuring Methods, Tunisia, October 12-13, 2012

Call for Participants
International Federation of Operational Research Societies
ICORD Workshop
Tunisia, October 12-13, 2012
Theme : Problem Structuring Methods
http://ifors.org/web/icord-workshop/

Background
Since 1992, IFORS has organized a series of International Conferences
on OR for Development (ICORD), approximately every three years. It
has now been decided to hold ICORD conferences on a regular basis in
conjunction with the IFORS Triennial Conference.

In addition, and in order to enhance continuity and interest in the
field, IFORS is now launching an additional program to conduct
workshops in non-IFORS Conference years, to be held across IFORS?
different regions. The hope and intention is that representatives from
these workshops will make presentations at the subsequent ICORD
Conference.

The aims of the new structure are to achieve:
* a greater momentum for the OR in Development programme through
greater frequency and visibility of actions;
* an improved focus for OR in Development activities on selected
problem-oriented themes.

2012 ICORD Workshop
The 2012 ICORD Workshop will be held on Djerba island, Tunisia.
Located south of Tunisia, Djerba is famous for its excellent white
sandy beaches, blue sea, dramatic sunsets, and rural Mediterranean
farms. The island is surrounded by many small islands where the only
inhabitants are birds and is a popular tourist destination.

Program
The Workshop is designed to follow on from the ROAD Conference on
October 11th (http://road2012.logiq-giad.org/). Separate registration
is required, and places on the Workshop are limited. Some of the
sessions will be open to ROAD participants. The language of the
workshop is English.

The program will be limited to 30 participants. Acceptance onto the
program will be based on applicants? previous, current or intended
involvement in the area of OR for development. The purpose of the
workshop is to help participants in strengthening their capacity to
work effectively on development-related problems

The workshop is designed to introduce workshop members to Problem
Structuring Methods, and give guidance on how they can be applied to
problems with a development context. Tuition will be by a mixture of
exposition and case exercises. Participants will be asked to
contribute an example of a development issue or problem relevant to
their own country and situation, which may be chosen for discussion at
the workshop.

Participants will be introduced to methods that help deal with
problems arising from the nature of under-development, and of the
development process. The limitations of more traditional OR methods in
this context will be discussed.
The Problem Structuring Methods to be covered in some depth are
Strategic Options Development and Analysis (SODA) and Soft Systems
Methodology (SSM). In addition there will be some coverage of the
Strategic Choice Approach, and Robustness Analysis.

Participants will find it useful to obtain Rosenhead and Mingers (eds)
Rational Analysis for a Problematic World Revisited, Wiley, Chichester
UK. Other reading will be supplied during the workshop.

Program Leaders
The principal tutors for the Workshop are Mike Cushman and Professor
Jonathan Rosenhead of the London School of Economics, and Professor
Leroy White of the University of Bristol.

[DMANET] MUSKETEER 1.0 - Tool for Multiscale Network Generation

Dear all,

We release a new network generation tool MUSKETEER (Multiscale Entropic
Network Generator). MUSKETEER generates highly realistic synthetic
network data for multiple domains. The tool has been validated in
domains such as epidemiological networks, social networks,
finite-element meshes, power grids as well as small-world and scale-free
networks. MUSKETEER takes empirical network data, which it coarsens and
then refines through the multiscale framework (V-cycle). During the
refinement phase, it introduces user-controlled perturbations which lead
to high-entropy changes of the original data. The problem of network
generation can be formulated at all levels of the multiscale hierarchy
(depending on the user's preferences to change the entire structure of
the network or only several particular scales). The proposed multiscale
framework can easily incorporate new features such as invariants that
have to be preserved in the generated network. MUSKETEER supports node
and edge attributes, and multiple network formats.

We would appreciate your feedback on the multiscale strategy for network
generation and the software.

SECOND CALL FOR PAPERS

The 5th International Workshop on Computational Transportation Science intends
to bring together communities interested in the computation, knowledge discovery
and technology policy aspects of surface transportation systems. The organizers
of IWCTS welcome papers from researchers in computer science, urban and regional
planning, civil engineering, geography, geoinformatics and related disciplines
for consideration for presentation and discussion at the one-day workshop, and
for publication in the conference proceedings.

BACKGROUND

Trends in sensing, communication and urbanization generate significant research
questions relating to computation, knowledge discovery and technology policy for
intelligent transportation systems. Transportation systems, due to their
distributed/mobile nature, can become the ultimate test-bed for a ubiquitous
(i.e., embedded, highly-distributed, and sensor-laden) computing environment of
unprecedented scale. Information technology is the foundation for implementing
new strategies, particularly if they are to be made available in real-time to
wireless devices in vehicles or in the hands of people. Contributing are
increasingly more sophisticated geospatial and spatio-temporal information
management capabilities. Human factors, technology adoption and use, and user
feedback and user-centered design are areas of technology policy central to the
success of this ubiquitous computing environment.

The emerging discipline of Computational Transportation Science (the science
behind Intelligent Transportation Systems) combines computer science and
engineering with the modeling, planning, and economic aspects of transportation
planning and engineering to leverage developments in the above domains. By
taking advantage of ubiquitous computing, Computational Transportation Science
applications can help create more efficient, equitable, livable and sustainable
transportation systems and communities.
