[DMANET] PhD position in bioinformatics algorithms @ Marne-la-Vallee France

A 3-years PhD fellowship in the area of bioinformatics algorithms is offered at Marne-la-Vallée University in France, under supervision of Gregory Kucherov. The work will focus on the development of new algorithms and data structures for indexing large volumes of sequence data produced by Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) technologies. An emphasis will be made on the use and improvement of modern algorthmic methods for sequence indexing.

The PhD work will be part of the ABS4NGS project: a French national interdisciplinary project on NGS including several groups of mathematicians, statisticians, computer scientists and biologists.

The student will have to combine skills in discrete mathematics, algorithm design and analysis, with a taste for programming and experimentation which will be an important part of this work. Knowledge of biology is not required.

The work will be carried out in the 'Laboratoire d'Informatique Gaspard-Monge' (LIGM) of the 'Université Paris-Est Marne-la-Vallée' which is located about 20km east to Paris and is easily accessible from Paris (around 30 minutes by suburb train from the center of Paris).

The candidate must have a master degree in Computer Science or Bioinformatics. Knowledge of french is not required, however, at least some basic notions of french would be a plus. The net scolarship will be approximately 1850 euros/month during three years (standard duration of PhD work in Computer Science in France). The PhD work has to be full-time, it assumes following some PhD courses and is concluded by a defense of a PhD thesis (usually at the end of the 3rd or beginning of the 4th year) that can be written in english. The fellowship should start around November 2012. More information is available on demand.

To apply please send me a full CV supplemented by an application letter explaining your motivation and your interest for the fellowship. Please attach, if possible, your grades in Master degree and recommendation letters (or names of reference people), as well as other possible related information.
