[DMANET] CFP:: Middle-European Conference on Applied Theoretical Computer Science

Call for Papers
Middle-European Conference on Applied Theoretical Computer Science
(MATCOS)

Koper, Slovenia, October 10th and 11th, 2013.
http://matcos.iam.upr.si

Held in conjunction with the 16th Multi-Conference on Information
Society, October 7-11, 2013, Ljubljana, Slovenia. (http://is.ijs.si/)

Scope and Topics
----------------
During the past years, other fields have used several subjects,
methods and approaches of Theoretical Computer Science, and several
results have been integrated into practical applications. Solutions
for NP-hard problems, algorithmic-oriented AI and data mining
procedures, new models and methods in system biology and
bioinformatics, automata theory approaches in software and hardware
verification, prospective new models of computation and future
computer architecture are good examples to buttress the above
statement.

We set double aims as the scope of this conference: on one hand side
we expect ideas and solutions from the field of Theoretical Computer
Science which have been directly applied in real world applications.
On the other side we want to collect theoretical results based on some
fruitful idea that may be useful to adopt for practical problems.

Suggested, but not exclusive, topics of interest include:
- Automata and formal languages, computability,
- Algorithms and data structures,
- Computational complexity,
- Artificial intelligence, machine learning,
- Optimization, approximation methods, NP-hard problems,
- Graph theory.

There is a special emphasis on use in applications such as simulation,
bioinformatics, digital signal and image processing, logistics etc.

[DMANET] Tenure Track Position in Mathematical Optimization

University of Twente
Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, and Computer Science
Department of Mathematical Sciences

invites researchers to apply for a

***Tenure Track Position in Mathematical Optimization***

We are looking for highly talented and enthusiastic candidates with a PhD in any relevant area of Mathematics, Theoretical Computer Science or Econometrics and a track record in Mathematical Optimization or closely related disciplines. We particularly invite qualified women to apply.

The position is part of the group Discrete Mathematics and Mathematical Programming (DMMP), with six permanent scientific staff, teaching assistants, plus about 15 PhD students and post-docs. Our main research areas are in combinatorial optimization, mathematical programming, and algorithmic game theory, with applications in health, energy, logistics and traffic. See http://dmmp.ewi.utwente.nl for details.

We are particularly interested in strengthening our group in the theory and practice of mathematical programming. Yet, applications from researchers in related fields like discrete optimization will receive consideration, too.

Our teaching involves courses in the following curricula: The BSc program in Applied Mathematics, the MSc program in Operations Research, as well as nationwide MSc and PhD programmes of Mastermath (http://www.mastermath.nl) and the Dutch Network for the Mathematics of OR (http://www.lnmb.nl). Working and teaching languages are English and Dutch. Mastering the Dutch language is not a prerequisite, but a medium term goal.

The position is a Tenure Track position, which means that promotion from UD (assistant professor) to UHD (associate professor) and subsequently to professor is planned, based on individual performance agreements. Depending on experience, an initial appointment at UHD level is also possible. A definitive assessment will take place no later than five years, after which tenure is granted, given a positive review. Criteria for evaluation are an international visibility in research, including research funding and top publications, as well as teaching.

The terms of employment are in accordance with the Dutch Collective Labour Agreement for Universities (CAO). Depending on relevant work experience, the gross monthly salary for an employee on a full time basis ranges from € 3,228 to € 5,473. Employees are also entitled to a holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual salary and a year-end bonus of 8,33%.

The University of Twente, with its world-class research institutes CTIT (http://www.utwente.nl/ctit/), MIRA (http://www.utwente.nl/mira/), and MESA+ (http://www.utwente.nl/mesaplus/), offers an excellent environment for researchers in applied mathematics, and has an attractive campus with lots of facilities for sports and leisure.

Candidates should have the ambition to become a professor, with passion for both research and teaching, and a track record that documents this ambition. Applications (including curriculum vitae, list of publications, research statement, and three names of potential references) can be submitted online (http://www.utwente.nl/vacatures/en/) before August 15, 2013 to the University of Twente, attn. Prof.dr.ir. A.J. Mouthaan, Dean of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science.

This vacancy is part of an initiative in which twelve tenure track positions in mathematics will become available at Dutch universities and research institutes. This is made possible by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science via the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). For more information, please visit http://www.nwo.nl/math.

For more information, please contact Marc Uetz (m.uetz@utwente.nl, ++31 53 489 34 20).

[DMANET] Fall School, 2-20 September 2013, TU Graz -- 2nd Call for participation

======================================================
Fall School, 02-20 September 2013, TU Graz -- 2nd Call for participation
======================================================

We invite you to participate in

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fall School "Phase Transition in Random Discrete Structures"
02-20 September 2013
Graz University of Technology (TU Graz), Austria

https://www.math.tugraz.at/discrete/index.php?link=events&link2=fall_school2013
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SUMMARY:

The phase transition is a phenomenon observed in mathematics and natural
sciences in many different contexts. It deals with a sudden change in
the properties of a large structure caused by altering a critical
parameter. The phase transition in random discrete structures (e.g.
random graphs, random graph processes, random satisfiability problems,
Ising/Potts model, percolation) has captured the attention of many
scientists in recent years.

The goal of the fall school is to provide advanced master students, PhD
students, and early stage postdocs, who are interested in random
discrete structures and related fields, the opportunities

- to learn the state of the art results in the study of the phase
transition in various random discrete structures;
- to understand modern proof techniques that have successfully been
applied to the study of phase transition and its critical behaviour;
- to meet fellow colleagues in their early research career, which
possibly results in their future collaboration.

On top of this scientific and educational achievement, young
participants can experience the research environment of TU Graz as a
candidate place for their future research, and establish contacts with
other participants for their future collaboration. The language of the
school is English.

The fall school is supported by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) within
the Doctoral Programme "Discrete Mathematics"at TU Graz and by the
European Science Foundation (ESF) within the Research Networking
Programme "Random Geometry of Large Interacting Systems and Statistical
Physics (RGLIS)".

LECTURERS:

The lectures of the fall school will be given by the two experts in the
study of phase transitions in random discrete structures:

- Amin Coja-Oghlan (University of Frankfurt)
- Konstantinos Panagiotou (Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich)

AUDIENCE:

The course is addressed to advanced master students, PhD students, and
early stage postdocs, who are interested in random discrete structures
and related fields. The total number of participants is limited to 35.
The course is free of charge.

There will be a limited amount of scholarships (of max. 500 Euro each)
available for PhD students or for advanced Master students in a field
related to the topics of the school. The scholarship is designed to
cover accommodation costs for the whole duration of stay.

APPLICATION:

Applications for participation only, with a short curriculum vitae and
scientific background, should be sent by 5 July 2013 to Sandra Wissler
<sandra.wissler@tugraz.at>

Applications for scholarship and participation, with curriculum vitae, a
short research statement, and a letter of recommendation (sent directly
by a thesis advisor or a renowned mathematician in the field), should be
sent by 5 July 2013 to Sandra Wissler
<sandra.wissler@tugraz.at>

Applicants will be notified by 15 July 2013.

ORGANIZERS:

Mihyun Kang
Philipp Sprüssel
Wilfried Huss (DK coordinator)

[DMANET] MASSIVE 2013: Call for Papers

Fifth Workshop on Massive Data Algorithmics (MASSIVE 2013)

September 5, 2013

Sophia Antipolis, France

In connection with ALGO'13 and organized by
Center for Massive Data Algorithmics (MADALGO)

Webpage: www.madalgo.au.dk/massive2013

Aim and Scope

Tremendous advances in our ability to acquire, store and process data,
as well as the pervasive use of computers in general, have resulted in
a spectacular increase in the amount of data being collected. This
availability of high-quality data has led to major advances in both
science and industry. In general, society is becoming increasingly
data driven, and this trend is likely to continue in the coming years.

The increasing number of applications processing massive data means
that in general focus on algorithm efficiency is increasing. However,
the large size of the data, and/or the small size of many modern
computing devices, also means that issues such as memory hierarchy
architecture often play a crucial role in algorithm efficiency. Thus
the availability of massive data also means many new challenges for
algorithm designers.

The aim of the workshop on massive data algorithmics is to provide a
forum for researchers from both academia and industry interested in
algorithms for massive dataset problems. The scope of the workshop
includes both fundamental algorithmic problems involving massive data,
as well as algorithms for more specialized problems in, e.g.,
graphics, databases, statistics and bioinformatics. Topics of interest
include, but are not limited to:

- I/O-efficient algorithms
- Cache-oblivious algorithms
- Memory hierarchy efficient algorithms
- Streaming algorithms
- Sublinear algorithms
- Parallel algorithms for massive data problem
- Engineering massive data algorithms

Paper submission

We invite submissions of extended abstracts (at most 10 pages not counting
references) of original research. Extended abstract should be submitted through
the EasyChair website by July 26. Authors will be notified about acceptance by
August 12, and final versions will be due on August 23. Accepted extended
abstracts will be collected in a booklet, which will be distributed at the
workshop. There will be no formal proceedings, so work presented at the
workshop can also be (or have been) presented at other conferences. An author
of each accepted abstract is expected to give a presentation of the abstract at
the workshop.

[DMANET] WRAWN 2013 : Early registration until June 21

Call for participation:

Fourth Workshop on Realistic models for Algorithms in Wireless Networks (WRAWN)
Co-located with PODC 2013 in Montreal
http://wrawn.ru.is

The aim of the WRAWN workshop series is to study ways of capturing the
reality of wireless communication while maintaining both the
generality and feasibility of rigorous algorithmic development.

The goal of this year's WRAWN is to tackle a provocative question:
Is the study of wireless algorithms useful enough?

There will be no traditional presentations of specific technical
results. Instead, the presentations can be polemical (e.g., "graph
models are the tool of the devil!"), expository (e.g., "here are my
experiences integrating formal algorithm results into a real system")
or speculative (e.g., "we need to build a massive multi-institutional
testbed to systematically evaluate all major theoretical models...").

Plenty of time will be left for discussion and exploration of
collaboration opportunities. The goal is for attendees to leave with
new ideas, co-authors, and (hopefully) confidence in their work on
wireless algorithmics.

The meeting will be held at Concordia University in downtown Montreal,
from 9 to 5 on Sunday July 21.

Speakers:
Seth Gilbert, NU Singapore
Martin Hoefer, MPI Saarbruecken
Thomas Janson, Freiburg
Majid Khabbazian, Alberta
Fabian Kuhn, Freiburg
Nancy Lynch, MIT
Christian Scheideler, Paderborn

Workshop Organizers:
Magnus M. Halldorsson, Reykjavik University
Calvin Newport, Georgetown University

[DMANET] 1st CFP: Special Issue on "Heuristics for Reliable and Efficient Wireless Sensor Networks Deployments" (J. of Heuristics, Springer, Q1)

FIRST CALL FOR PAPERS:

Special Issue on
"HEURISTICS FOR RELIABLE AND EFFICIENT WIRELESS SENSOR NETWORKS DEPLOYMENTS"

http://arco.unex.es/hrewsn
http://www.springer.com/mathematics/applications/journal/10732

Journal of Heuristics
Springer, ISSN: 1381-1231. Editor-in-Chief: Manuel Laguna.
Impact factor (2011): 1.262 (Q1, COMPUTER SCIENCE, THEORY & METHODS).

Aims and Scope:
==============
Wireless Sensor Networks are nowadays an extended engineering technology for many
markets due to the great amount of their possibilities in collecting data from
complex environments and processing them for different purposes. Nevertheless, this
interest is not enough to apply this kind of networks as trustworthy solution for
many real-world environments, such as industrial processes and critical
infrastructures, where high reliability is required, together with other related key
aspects as energy, security and efficiency. Many companies could overcome their
reluctances if economic, reliable and easily deployed solutions are provided in this
field. In this scenario, the heuristics and computational intelligence play an
important role to solve many involved optimization problems, doing necessary the
research on advanced solutions that result in a successful product. In this sense,
there are many challenges, trends and open possibilities in this area that deserve
to be known. In this special issue, we seek original, high quality articles, clearly
focused on theoretical or practical aspects of the heuristics and mathematical
optimization methods for obtaining reliable and efficient wireless sensor networks,
including but not limited to the topics shown below.

Topics of Interest:
==================
The topics related to heuristics for reliable and efficient Wireless Sensor Networks
deployments that are relevant to this special issue include but are not limited to:

* Energy minimization aspects: network lifetime and power savings.
* Efficient networks deployments.
* Heuristics and computational intelligence applied for solving optimization problems.
* Multiobjective optimization problems.
* Fault tolerance and quality of service.
* Robust routing algorithms, network protocols and operating systems.
* Security and privacy aspects of the communications.
* Microprocessors, circuits, and embedded applications.
* Application cases, user studies and experiences.

Papers must be tailored to the problem of the wireless sensor networks and
explicitly consider heuristics and mathematical optimization methods. The editors
maintain the right to reject papers they deem to be out of scope of this special
issue. Only originally unpublished contributions and invited articles will be
considered for the issue. Authors should submit their manuscripts through Editorial
Manager http://www.editorialmanager.com/heur/, selecting "SI - HREWSN" as the
article type.

Important Dates:
===============
Submission deadline: December 1st, 2013.
Acceptation notification: April 1st, 2014.
Final Papers: June 1st, 2014.
