Springer, ISSN: 1381-1231. Editor-in-Chief: Manuel Laguna.
Impact factor (2012): 1.471 (Q1, COMPUTER SCIENCE, THEORY & METHODS).
Aims and Scope:
==============
Wireless Sensor Networks are nowadays an extended engineering technology
for many markets due to the great amount of their possibilities in
collecting data from complex environments and processing them for
different purposes. Nevertheless, this interest is not enough to apply
this kind of networks as trustworthy solution for many real-world
environments, such as industrial processes and critical infrastructures,
where high reliability is required, together with other related key
aspects as energy, security and efficiency. Many companies could
overcome their reluctances if economic, reliable and easily deployed
solutions are provided in this field. In this scenario, the heuristics
and computational intelligence play an important role to solve many
involved optimization problems, doing necessary the research on advanced
solutions that result in a successful product. In this sense, there are
many challenges, trends and open possibilities in this area that deserve
to be known. In this special issue, we seek original, high quality
articles, clearly focused on theoretical or practical aspects of the
heuristics and mathematical optimization methods for obtaining reliable
and efficient wireless sensor networks, including but not limited to the
topics shown below.
Topics of Interest:
==================
The topics related to heuristics for reliable and efficient Wireless
Sensor Networks deployments that are relevant to this special issue
include but are not limited to:
* Energy minimization aspects: network lifetime and power savings.
* Efficient networks deployments.
* Heuristics and computational intelligence applied for solving
optimization problems.
* Multiobjective optimization problems.
* Fault tolerance and quality of service.
* Robust routing algorithms, network protocols and operating systems.
* Security and privacy aspects of the communications.
* Microprocessors, circuits, and embedded applications.
* Application cases, user studies and experiences.
Papers must be tailored to the problem of the wireless sensor networks
and explicitly consider heuristics and mathematical optimization
methods. The editors maintain the right to reject papers they deem to be
out of scope of this special issue. Only originally unpublished
contributions and invited articles will be considered for the issue.
Authors should submit their manuscripts through Editorial Manager
http://www.editorialmanager.com/heur/, selecting "SI - HREWSN" as the
article type.
Important Dates:
===============
Submission deadline: December 1st, 2013.
Acceptation notification: April 1st, 2014.
Final Papers: June 1st, 2014.

2 PhD / postdoc positions in stochastic model checking, U Twente
POSITION 1: smart railroad maintenance via stochastic model checking (ArRangeer)
Goal of the ArRangeer project is to develop smart railroad maintenance techniques through stochastic modeling, analysis and optimization. In particular, our aim is to extend the widely used fault tree formalism with maintenance models. The scientific core is the extension and refinement of stochastic model checking and stochastic decisions techniques to maintenance planning problems.
We will extensively cooperate with the RWTH Aachen University, and maintenance engineers from ProRail, Movares and NedTrain. Key project deliverables are efficient analysis algorithms and a workable tool to be used in the ProRail context.
(EU FP7 project TREsPASS)
Goal of the TREsPASS project is to develop an attack navigator to predict, prioritize and prevent information security attacks. We will use a model-based and quantitative approach. In particular, we will develop methods and techniques to expose which attack opportunities are possible; which of them are most urgent; and which countermeasures are most effective.
Scientific core of our work is the extension, refinement, and tailoring of stochastic model checking and stochastic decision-theory techniques to quantify risks on attacks, attack scenarios and the effectiveness of countermeasures. Key project deliverables are efficient analysis algorithms and their implementation in a workable tool.
During the whole project, we will extensively cooperate with the TREsPASS partners, most notably with Aalborg University Denmark, Technical University Denmark, University of Luxemburg, and the industrial partners Cybernetica and Consult Hyperion.
- We are looking for a candidates with a strong background in mathematics or theoretical computer science, and the will to apply this expertise in practical case studies.
- The projects are supervised by Dr Marielle Stoelinga (both), Prof.dr. Jaco van de Pol (TREsPASS) and Prof.dr.Joost-Pieter Katoen (ArRangeer)
- PhD student/Postdoc: Full status as an employee at the University of Twente, including pension and health care benefits.

[DMANET] PhD thesis on computational geometry and structural bioinformatics
Title: Computational geometry for the determination of biomolecular structures
Subject:
During the last decades, structural biology allowed to incredibly
improve the information on the biological objects, from single
biomolecules to molecular assemblies, and to get a better description
of the physics underlying the interactions between molecules.
Somehow, structural biology can be considered as the description
of the geometric properties of biomolecules, as biomolecular
structures are determined from the measurements of angles and
distances between molecule atoms. These parameter values can
be determined by: Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), fluorescence/FRET,
mass spectrometry coupled to cross-linking or analysis of protein
sequence alignment. Up to now, one of the most used method to
optimize the protein conformation given these geometric restraints,
was based on the repeated use of simulated annealing (SA) algorithm,
followed by extensive statistics. As the SA algorithm does not
provide a guarantee of global minimality of the function, and
is quite sensitive to the sparsity and to the lack of redundancy
in the distance restraints, we propose in this PhD thesis to explore the
efficiency of another class of methods, derived from operations research
and computational geometry, where a branch-and-pruning algorithm permits
in principle the full exploration of the whole solution space. This
algorithm already gave promising results on small examples of biomolecules,
and the purpose of the project would be to extend them to real-life
systems including: protein structures determination from NMR
distance restraints, homology models or positioning of protein
domains within molecular assemblies using cross-linking restraints.
The PhD thesis will be realized in the frame of a collaboration between the
UnitÈ de Bioinformatique Structurale (CNRS/Institut Pasteur, France) and
the Department of Applied Mathematics (University of Campinas, Brazil).
Required skills
Knowledge of the basic features of the protein structure
Knowledge of algorithmics
Knowledge of at least one programming language among: C++, python
Will to work in an inter-disciplinary team with interactions
with biologists and applied mathematicians
Required level:
Master in bioinformatics including courses on structural bioinformatics,
computer science or applied mathematics
Working language: english, french

before starting the PhD.
Salary paid by Institut Pasteur
Salary: 1450Euros/month, but the income taxes have to be paid on it
(other charges are already removed).
Work permit required from foreigners outside of the Schlengen space.

Post docs at the Technion
starting October 2014. This is a competition between candidates. In order
for a candidate to participate, the request must be submitted by the
intended host (who also must participate in the funding). The eventual
submission to the Technion includes a CV, 3 letters of support, a
statement of research and a letter detailing the intended cooperation
between the host and the post doc.
In addition for grants to post docs from anywhere, there are several
grants for citizens if India, and citizens of China only. The deadline for
this kind of fellowships is rather soon. The deadline for the other
fellowships is late November this year.
The subjects of the post doc are any. However, I would be glad to consider
hosting excellent post docs in distributed computing. Strong letters of
support and strong results already obtained (and possibly published) will
make a successful submission rather likely and, I believe, worthwhile.
Please do not hesitate to ask questions.

== About the book ==
Data exchange, integration, and streams concern three different, yet
inter-related facets of information integration that have been investigated in
depth in the recent years. Data exchange and integration deal with the execution
of information integration, but they adopt distinctly different approaches. Data
exchange is the problem of transforming data residing in different sources into
data structured under a target schema; in particular, it entails the
materialization of data, after the data have been extracted from the sources and
re-structured into the unified format. In contrast, data integration can be
described as symbolic or virtual integration: users are provided with the
capability to pose queries and obtain answers via the unified format interface,
while the data remain in the sources and no materialization of the restructured
data is required. In the basic data stream model, the input data consists of one
or several streams of data items that can be read sequentially. This scenario is
relevant for a large number of applications where massive amounts of data need
to be processed. Typically, algorithms have to work with one or a few passes
over the data and a memory buffer of size significantly smaller than the input size.
This volume is based on GI-Dagstuhl Seminar 10452 on "Data Exchange,
Integration, and Streams" (DEIS'10) held in November 2010 at Schloss Dagstuhl –
Leibniz-Zentrum für Informatik, Germany; see http://www.dagstuhl.de/10452.

[DMANET] Call for Book Chapter Proposals: Simulation-Optimization Approaches

CALL FOR BOOK CHAPTER PROPOSALS
Getting into Practice : Simulation-Optimization Approaches
The use of simulation‐optimization approaches in logistics, industrial, and
aeronautical operations
Springer Handbook
Miguel Mujica, Idalia Flores, and Daniel Guimarans (Eds.)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Upcoming Deadline: 1st December 2013 - intention to prepare a manuscript
Contact us: m.mujica.mota@hva.nl<mailto:m.mujica.mota@hva.nl>, idalia@unam.mx<mailto:idalia@unam.mx>, daniel.guimarans@nicta.com.au<mailto:daniel.guimarans@nicta.com.au>
Simulation is a well‐known approach that can have different abstraction levels and can integrate different elements of a studied system. It consists in the development of a representation of a system (logistics one, manufacturing, operative, etc.) using modelling formalisms, off‐the‐shelf software programs, or programming languages. It is commonly used at industrial level to obtain a better understanding of the studied system. With the use of the model different experiments may be carried out in order to test different research questions, such as the performance of new configurations, identify bottlenecks in the current system, and inefficiencies that are perceived as an increase in operative costs. Unfortunately, the experiments alone cannot ensure the optimal configurations for the objective pursued (allocation of resources, minimizing operative costs, increase throughput etc.). On the other hand, optimization techniques are very‐well‐accepted techniques which consist in the representation of the problem under study taking into account only the key variables, dependencies, and restrictions of a problem. The main argument against them is that the abstraction process often leaves out of the scope some key elements that participate and affect the performance of a system, giving as a result a potential optimal solution that sometimes results difficult or impossible to implement in the real system.
The book will present techniques, case studies, and methodologies that combine the use of simulation approaches with optimization techniques for facing problems in manufacturing, logistics, or aeronautical problems, which aim at overcoming the shortcomings of both approaches through the combination of them. The book will present detailed techniques and research studies that cope with common industrial problems in several fields, which range from manufacturing to aviation problems, where the common denominator is the combination of simulation's flexibility with optimization techniques' robustness.
The benefit to the reader will be a comprehensive guide to tackle similar problems in industrial environments. The problems presented will serve only as an example, but methodologies used by the scientific community will be of high value in order to cope with complex problems.

[DMANET] PhD position in TCS at KTH Royal Institute of Technology
for a PhD position in theoretical computer science.
KTH Royal Institute of Technology is the leading technical university in
Sweden. The Theory Group at KTH (http://www.csc.kth.se/tcs/) offers a
strong research environment covering a wide range of research topics such
as complexity theory and approximation algorithms, computer and network
security, cryptography, formal methods and natural language processing.
The group has a consistent track record of publishing in the leading
theoretical computer science conferences and journals worldwide, and the
research conducted here has attracted numerous international awards and
grants in recent years. We are now set to expand further, and this
position is just one of several new openings.
Proving formulas in propositional logic is a problem of immense importance
both theoretically and practically. This computational task is widely
believed to be intractable in the worst case, although proving (or
disproving) this is a major open problem in theoretical computer science
and mathematics. (This is one of the famous million dollar Millennium
Problems, known as the P vs. NP problem.) In spite of this, today
so-called SAT solvers are routinely used to solve large-scale real-world
problem instances with millions of variables. The intriguing question of
when SAT solvers perform well or badly, and what properties of the
formulas explain this behaviour, remains quite poorly understood.
Proof complexity studies formal systems for reasoning about logic
formulas. This field has deep connections to fundamental questions in
computational complexity, but another important motivation is the
connection to SAT solving. All SAT solvers use some kind of method or
system in which proofs are searched for, and proof complexity analyses the
potential and limitations of such proof systems (and thereby of the
algorithms using them).
Our research aims to advance the frontiers of proof complexity, and to
leverage this research to shed light on questions related to SAT solving.
We want to understand what makes formulas hard or easy in practice, and to
gain theoretical insights into other crucial but poorly understood issues
in SAT solving. We are also interested in exploring the possibility of
basing SAT solvers on stronger proof systems than are currently being
used. In order to do so, however, a crucial step is to obtain a better
understanding of the corresponding proof systems, and in this context
there are a number of well-known and relatively longstanding open
questions in proof complexity that we want to study and try to resolve.
This research project is led by Jakob Nordstrom
(http://www.csc.kth.se/~jakobn) and is financed by a Breakthrough Research
Grant from the Swedish Research Council and a Starting Independent
Researcher Grant from the European Research Council. The group currently
consists of one postdoctoral researcher and two PhD students (in addition
to the project leader). Travel funding is included, and the group also
receives short-term and long-term visitors on a regular basis.
This is a four-year time-limited position, but PhD positions usually (but
not necessarily) include 20% teaching, in which case they are prolonged
for one more year. The successful candidate is expected to start in
August-September 2014, although this is to some extent negotiable.
The application deadline is December 15, 2013. See
http://www.csc.kth.se/~jakobn/openings/D-2013-0620-Eng.php for the full,
formal announcement with more information and instructions for how to
apply. Informal enquiries about this position are welcome and may be sent
to Jakob Nordstrom.

[DMANET] Postdoc positions in TCS at KTH Royal Institute of Technology
for two postdoctoral positions in Theoretical Computer Science.
KTH is the leading technical university in Sweden. The Theory Group at KTH
(http://www.csc.kth.se/tcs/) offers a strong research environment covering
a wide range of research topics such as complexity theory and
approximation algorithms, computer and network security, cryptography,

now set to expand further, and these positions are just two of several new
openings.
The postdoctoral researchers will be working in the research group of
Jakob Nordström (http://www.csc.kth.se/~jakobn). Much of the activities of
this group revolve around the themes of proof complexity and SAT solving.
However, these areas have also turned out to have deep, and sometimes
surprising, connections to other topics such as, e.g., circuit complexity,
communication complexity, and hardness of approximation, and therefore
researchers in these or other related areas are more than welcome to
apply.
The research project is financed by a Breakthrough Research Grant from the
Swedish Research Council and a Starting Independent Researcher Grant from
the European Research Council. In addition to the project leader, the
group currently consists of one postdoc and two PhD students. Travel
funding is included, and the group also receives short-term and long-term
visitors on a regular basis.
These are full-time employed positions for one year with a possible
one-year extension. The successful candidates are expected to start in
August-September 2014, although this is to some extent negotiable.
The application deadline is December 15, 2013. More information and
instructions how to apply can be found at
http://www.csc.kth.se/~jakobn/openings/D-2013-0712-Eng.php . Informal
enquiries are welcome and may be sent to Jakob Nordstrom.
