[DMANET] Call for THREE Ph.D. positions in Operations Research; JOINT KU LEUVEN - SKEMA DOCTORAL PROGRAM IN AI & OR

SKEMA Businessschool (France) in collaboration with the Faculty of Economics and Business of KU Leuven (Belgium) has three full-time Ph.D. positions starting in September2022, for a period of four years.

Position1: a Ph.D. position in Operations Research (PHD-OR-2022)

The researcherto be hired will work in the field of Operations Research under the supervisionof Prof. Dr. Morteza Davari and Prof. Dr. Jannik Matuschke. He/She will obtaina Ph.D. degree jointly awarded by the Faculty of Economics and Business of KULeuven and SKEMA Business School.

Our research interests are in Combinatorial Optimization, inparticular the design and analysis of algorithms for network andscheduling problems. Our methodology includes:

·       Linear and IntegerProgramming

·       Stochastic and RobustOptimization

·       Approximation Algorithms

·       AlgorithmicGame Theory

The candidatewill work on research questions related to these areas. He/she will find adynamic and pleasant working environment in both universities, in groups thatare actively involved in scientific research at the highest internationallevel.

The candidateshould have a strong interest in mathematics, computer science, operationsresearch, with a recently completed (or soon-to-be-completed) master's degreein one of these fields or a related field. Graduation with honors inpreliminary studies is a requirement, as well as an appropriate command ofwritten and spoken English. A strong background in Combinatorial Optimizationand the methodology mentioned above is appreciated, and experience with atleast one programming language is an asset. For more information, pleasecontact Prof. Dr. Morteza Davari and Prof. Dr. Jannik Matuschke via email addresses: morteza.davari@skema.edu and jannik.matuschke@kuleuven.be.

Position2: a Ph.D. position in Operations Research: theory and applications(PHD-ORTA-2022)

The researcher to be hired will work in the field of Operations Researchunder the supervision of Dr. Bernardo Pagnoncelli and Dr. Hande Yaman. Thiswork should lead to a Ph.D. degree granted by KU Leuven and SKEMA (SKEMA-KULJoint Degree doctoral program ``AI in OM'').  Some research keywordsare:

·       Stochastic programming

·       Mixed-integer programming

·       Algorithm design

·       Data-driven optimization

The candidatewill work on the development of models and algorithms at the interface ofoptimization with areas such as transportation, finance, energy, logistics andscheduling, among others.  He/she will find a dynamic and pleasantworking environment in both universities, in groups that are actively involvedin scientific research at the highest international level.

The candidateshould have a strong interest in OR and its diverse applications. He/she shouldpreferably hold a Master's degree in Operations Research, Business Engineering,Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Industrial Engineering, or equivalent. An appropriate command of written and spoken English is a requirement, andexperience with at least one programming language is an asset.  Studentsthat are currently in the final year of their Masters are especially encouragedto apply. For more information: Dr. Bernardo Pagnoncelli, mail: bernardo.pagnoncelli@skema.edu or Dr.Hande Yaman, mail: hande.yaman@kuleuven.be.

Position3: a Ph.D. position in Operations ResearchApplied to Health Services (PHD-ORAHS-2022)

The researcher to be hired will work in the field of Operations ResearchApplied to Health Services under the supervision of Prof. Erik Demeulemeesterand Dr. Aida Jebali. The objective of this research is to develop a holisticapproach for operating room planning and scheduling. This work should lead to aPh.D. degree that will be granted by KU Leuven and SKEMA (SKEMA-KUL JointDegree doctoral program ``AI in OM'').  Some keywords related to thePh.D. research topic are:

·       Stochastic programming

·       Robust optimization

·       Simulation-based optimization

·       Data-driven optimization

The candidate will work onthe development of models and algorithms at the interface of discreteoptimization, simulation and machine learning. This work aims at providinginsightful recommendations to hospital decision makers that help in increasingboth the efficiency of hospital's operating rooms and patient's satisfaction, and achieving better health outcomes. He/she will find a dynamic and pleasantworking environment, in a group that is actively involved in scientificresearch at the highest international level.

Candidates should have a strong interest in OR and its diverseapplications, mainly in health services. He/she should have recently completeda Master's degree (or soon-to-be completed) in Operations Research, BusinessEngineering, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Industrial Engineering or arelated field.  Graduation with honors inpreliminary studies is a requirement, as well as an appropriate command ofwritten and spoken English. Experience with at least one programming languageis an asset.
