Submissions must be in English, and not exceed 12 pages, including the
title page, in Springer's LNCS LaTeX style (instructions available

and PC members, may be provided in a clearly marked appendix or by
reference to a manuscript on a web site.

Accepted papers will be published in an LNCS volume by Springer.
Instructions for formatting camera-ready versions will be communicated
to the authors of accepted papers.
At least one of the authors must commit to presenting the paper at the
conference.

[DMANET] PhD/MSc positions in optimization/modeling/operations research at University of British Columbia, Canada

We invite applications for several fully funded PhD and MSc positions in optimization, operations research, modeling, or a related field. The anticipated start date is September 2018.

Project 1: Optimization of road design
Our research group has successfully secured multi-year industry-sponsored funding with a road design CAD company to investigate how to minimize the cost of road construction under safety, environmental, and regulatory constraints. The research will involve the understanding, development and numerical testing of new models for the road design problem. The PhD ideal applicant has a background in optimization (LP, MIP, NLP, etc.), some programming experience in C++ or experience in algebraic modeling languages such as AIMMS, and the ability to communicate effectively (in English) with our industrial partner. Applicants at the MSc level should have either a solid background in programming e.g. BSc in computer science, or in optimization e.g. BSc in mathematics. Funding is already in place with a starting date of Sept 2018.

Project 2: Computational convex analysis
Applicants with interest in optimization, convex analysis, and nonsmooth analysis from an algorithm viewpoint are invited to apply to our PhD program in Mathematics. The project has a strong algorithm focus with a goal of improving global optimization algorithms. It also includes the exploration of the latest visualization techniques such as VR.

Applicants with a background in computer science are invited to apply to our MSc program in computer science, (optimization cluster). They will investigate new algorithms to compute and visualize mathematical objects, and will explore VR capabilities with state of the art hardware.

You will join a dynamic group of researchers in optimization at the University of British Columbia (Canada) on the fast growing campus of Kelowna. The research team is interdisciplinary with faculty member from Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics (Data Science), and Civil Engineering. It is part of the Centre for Optimization, Convex Analysis, and Nonsmooth Analysis (COCANA), see http://ocana.ok.ubc.ca/).

[DMANET] PhD studentship at University of Strathclyde

One PhD studentship in optimization in health economics is available at
the Dept. of Management Science, Strathclyde Business School, University of
Strathclyde, Glasgow, UK. Funding is available to cover 3 years of tuition
fees plus a tax free stipend (currently higher than £14,000 per year). The
studentship is open to candidates from any nationality
(UK/EU/international), and the project topic is bilevel integer programming.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Decision problems in real world application involve in multiple decision
makers and cannot be supported by traditional optimisation modelling
techniques. We are interested in developing algorithms to solve bilevel
integer problems, which typically consists of a leader and one or more
followers. Bilevel programs capture the aspect of conflicting objectives
between the leader and followers. We are particularly interested in
applying the techniques developed in the context of health economics, where
we have centralised funding agencies looking to allocate funds to multiple
recipients for health related projects.

FUNDING AND ELIGIBILITY

Funding is available to cover 3 years of tuition fees for a
UK/EU/international student, plus a tax free stipend higher than £14,000
per year. The student will be given opportunities to attend a conference
and/or specialized training every year.

These PhD projects require a highly numerate graduate with skills and
interests in computational science. Candidates should have at least a
strong Honours degree or equivalent (a strong 2:1 Honours degree, or a
B.Sc. degree with 3.3 GPA in a 4.0 system), or preferably a Master's degree
in a quantitative discipline such as industrial engineering, operations
research, mathematics or computer science (amongst others). Experience in
programming and fundamental knowledge in optimization (in particular
integer programming) is required. Candidates who are not native English
speakers will be required to provide evidence for their English skills
(such as by IELTS or similar tests that are approved by UKVI, or a degree
completed in an English speaking country)

Tutorials at GECCO 2018 will be presented by domain experts to cover
current topics relevant to evolutionary computation researchers and
practitioners. Each tutorial will be 110 minutes long. We encourage the
inclusion of interactive activities and demos.

Tutorials will be free to all GECCO 2018 attendees. It is expected that
all the instructors involved in an accepted tutorial will attend the
conference. One instructor/presenter of each accepted tutorial will be
able to register for GECCO at half the regular rate. (The discount can
be divided among tutorial instructors if there are more than one. Each
presenter is eligible for only a single tutorial discount, i.e., it is
not possible to aggregate discounts from more tutorials).

Accepted tutorials' slide sets will be collected by Sheridan/ACM Press,
and published as part of a companion volume to the conference

GECCO workshops provide the possibility to commonly develop visions and
exchange ideas in an informal setting, especially if focused on an
emerging research field or interdisciplinary research area. In contrast
to regular sessions, workshops can (and should) host interactive
sessions (posters, discussions, demonstrations, etc.). Attendance at the
workshops will be free to all GECCO attendees.

Workshop organizers are responsible for coordination and publicity. They
collect and review papers, and provide a list of accepted papers and
their authors, if applicable. If required, the GECCO organizers may
provide additional support to the workshop organizers, such as
publicity. Note that organizers, participants and presenters must
register for the conference. Accepted workshop papers will be collected
by Sheridan/ACM Press, and published in a companion volume to the
conference proceedings.

The Department of Mathematics at LSE has openings for PhD students,

[DMANET] PhD position in operations research available at Ecole des Ponts Paristech (Paris, France)

We invite applications for a fully funded PhD position in Operations Research and Machine Learning. The PhD should start no later than May 2018.

Title: demand models and schedule design for air lines

Operations Research has been successfully optimizing air line industry processes for more than sixty years. The topic of "schedule design" provides tools to decide which market to serve, with what frequency, and how to schedule flight legs to meet these frequencies. Mathematically, this requires to model demand and customer preferences, and then find the set of flight legs to operate that maximizes the predicted profit.

Two recent trends challenge the traditional approaches to schedule design. First, the air transportation industry moved from a monopolistic to a very competitive environment, which calls for a new generation of demand models. Second, the amount of data made available by information technologies opens new opportunities to better take into account the uncertainty of demand. These new stochastic models notably enable to evaluate and control risk when optimizing the flight legs schedule.

The objective of this PhD is to set up new approaches to schedule design that responds to these challenges.

* Research supervision and environment
Scientific supervisors: Frédéric Meunier and Axel Parmentier

This PhD takes place in the context of the Operations Research and Machine Learning ch air between Air France and the Ecole des Ponts Paristech. The candidate will share its time between the Cermics, the applied mathematics center of the Ecole des Ponts Paristech, and the Operations Research department of Air France .

Ecole des Ponts Paristech is one of the top French universities, and Paris provides a startling research environment in mathematics and computer science.

* Candidate profile
Students are expected to carry out top-level research. They will develop efficient solution algorithms to difficult planning problems. They must have a master degree in Operations Research, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field. They should demonstrate good programming skills. Knowledge of mathematical programming is required, experience in stochastic optimization, machine learning, or game theory is an asset. Even though they may learn French during their stay, French knowledge is not mandatory.

SCOPE

The ACM Symposium on Principles of Distributed Computing is an international forum on the theory, design, analysis, implementation and application of distributed systems and networks. We solicit papers in all areas of distributed computing. Papers from all viewpoints, including theory, practice, and experimentation, are welcome. The common goal of the conference is to improve understanding of the principles underlying distributed computing. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

PAPER SUBMISSION

Papers are to be submitted electronically, following the guidelines on the conference web page (www.podc.org). Submission must be in English, in pdf format, in single-column and at least 11-point font with reasonable margins. Each paper must begin with a cover page containing: (1) title, (2) author names and affiliations, (3) contact author's email, (4) abstract, (5) indication of whether the paper should be considered as a regular paper, a brief announcement, or both (requesting to be considered for both will not affect consideration of the paper for a regular presentation), and (6) indication of whether the paper is eligible for best student paper award; to be eligible, at least one of the authors must be a full-time student at the time of submission, and the student(s) must have made a significant contribution to the paper.

A regular paper submission must report on original research that has not been previously or concurrently published; concurrent submissions to journals or conferences are not permitted. A regular submission must not exceed 10 pages excluding cover page and references. All of the ideas necessary for an expert to verify the central claims in the paper should be included, some of which may be placed in a clearly marked appendix that will be read at the discretion of the program committee. (If desired, the authors can simply attach a copy of the full paper as an appendix.) However, the paper must be self-contained without the appendices.

A brief announcement submission must not exceed 3 pages excluding cover page and references. The material in brief announcements may be published in other conferences. The title of a brief announcement must begin with the words "Brief Announcement:".

Submissions not conforming to these rules and papers outside of the scope of the conference will be rejected without consideration.


PUBLICATION

Regular papers of up to 10 pages and brief announcements of up to 3 pages will be included in the conference proceedings. Extended and revised versions of selected papers will be considered for a special issue of the Distributed Computing journal. Two papers will be selected to be considered for publication in JACM.

[DMANET] Ph.D. positions in Operations Research (OR) and OR/Machine Learning in Montreal (starting Sept. 2018)

We invite applications for fully funded Ph.D. positions starting in
September 2018 in Montreal in the domain of Operations Research, as well as
in the intersection between Operations Research and Machine Learning. These
positions aim at advancing our collective capabilities to solve hard
optimization problems and our understanding of how external data sources
and real-time data can be used to improve the decision-making process.

* Research Topics
Research topics may be aligned with the interests of the students. Several
pre-defined research projects are also available (some of them in
collaboration with industrial partners). Topics may generally include the
following:
- Large-scale optimization for dynamic (combinatorial) planning problems
(e.g. Benders decomposition, Column Generation, Lagrangian Relaxation)
- Optimization under uncertainty (e.g. stochastic programming, robust
optimization, improvement of uncertainty sets and scenario generation
through external data)
- Improvement of (à priori and real-time) planning through integration of
external data sources via machine learning
- Development of Operations Research based algorithms to efficiently solve
machine learning problems

Research may be fundamental, applied, or a mix of both. Applications may
include domains such as Logistics and Transportation (e.g., vehicle sharing
systems, facility location, traffic management), Telecommunications and
Revenue Management (e.g., assortment planning; retail space optimization).

* Research supervision and environment
The students will work under the supervision of Dr. Sanjay Dominik Jena,
professor at the Department of Management and Technology (
mantech.esg.uqam.ca) at the Management School of Université du Québec à
Montréal (École des Science de la Gestion, UQAM). Sanjay Dominik Jena is
also member of the worldwide renowed, Montreal-based research center
CIRRELT (www.cirrelt.ca) and the Canada Exellence Research Chair in Data
Science for Real-time Decision-making (www.cerc-datascience.polymtl.ca).
Students may be co-supervised by other members of these research centers
and will be registered either at the joint Ph.D. program in Management (ESG
UQAM, HEC Montréal, McGill and Concordia) or at the respective university
of the other supervisor(s).

Montreal is a dynamic Metropolis, located in the province of Québec,
Canada. The city is bilingual (French/English) and known for its
international atmosphere. Montreal is known for its vibrate research
environment, hosting 5 major universities and several research centers in
the domains of Operations Research and Machine Learning. The successful
candidates will be working in one of the above-mentioned research centers.

* Candidate profile
Students are expected to carry out top-level research. They will develop
efficient solution algorithms to difficult planning problems such as those
in the above-listed domains. Candidates should have a Masters degree (or
equivalent) in Computer Science, Operations Research, Applied Mathematics,
or a related field. They should demonstrate good programming and
mathematical skills. Experience in mathematical programming, machine
learning, or data analysis is an asset. Candidates should possess a good
level of written and oral English. Even though they may eventually learn
French during their stay, French knowledge is not obligatory.

CALL FOR PAPERS
Discrete mathematics poses a wide range of challenging research problems, giving rise to important applications in other fields such as computer science, engineering, industry, business, finance and the physical/biological sciences. It is a dynamic subject in which techniques, theories and algorithms are drawn from many different areas, and it offers a diverse and stimulating environment for those whose work lies within it. This is a relatively new area that the IMA is pleased to support through a second event of its kind at the University of Derby.

The conference will showcase theoretical and computational advances in the general field of discrete mathematics. It is open to researchers working with mathematical structures and abstract constructs, and to those involved in the theory and practise of discrete algorithmic computing. The purpose of this event is to highlight progress in the field through the development of novel theories, methodologies and applications accordingly, and to inspire future work.

Abstracts of up to 500 words are invited to be submitted for either oral or poster presentation via https://my.ima.org.uk by Friday 13 April 2018, in areas including, but not limited to, the following:

The conference seeks to bring together colleagues from the many different arenas where discrete mathematics is developed and applied, and it is hoped that personal collaborations will be both encouraged and fostered as a result. Workshops affiliated with ICALP 2018 will be held on Monday July 9 (before
the main conference), see http://iuuk.mff.cuni.cz/~icalp2018/ for more

We invite proposals of workshops related to any of the three tracks of
ICALP, as well as other areas of theoretical computer science. To submit a
proposal, contact us at <sgall@iuuk.mff.cuni.cz> not later than November
30. Because of the limited capacity of the venue, we might not be able to
accept all proposals.

Please let us know the following information about your intended workshop:

- workshop's name and organizers

- whether you plan a half-day or full-day event and an estimated number of
participants

- the format: Standard options are either an invitation only workshop or a
workshop with regular submissions. For submissions, we suggest a unified
submission date Friday April 20 (a week after ICALP notification) and
notification date Friday May 18 (about a week before early registration ends).
Other formats are also possible, in that case please specify your proposal.

We expect that the workshops will be financially independent, we also
expect that the organizers will take care of the proceedings / abstract
books themselves. In particular we cannot cover any expenses of the
workshop invited speakers, if there are any. Any such expenses would need
to be covered from independent sources.

We plan the workshop fee to be EUR 50-60 on top of the ICALP fee for all the
workshops on Monday July 9; the fee will cover lunch, coffee breaks and the
usual local support.

Within the framework of the Swiss National Science Foundation project
``Higher-dimensional geometric and combinatorial structures'' *two
Doctoral Fellowships are
available*. The tentative start date is January, 2018 (or at an earlier
convenience). Each position has duration of maximum *four years*. All

In addition to working towards their Doctoral degree, the successful
candidates are expected to assume teaching duties, and to master a working

grant portions because this kind of remuneration is regulated and described

[DMANET] Edmond J. Safra Center for Bioinformatics - Postdocotral fellowship at TAU

Purpose

The Edmond J. Safra Center for Bioinformatics at Tel Aviv University (TAU)
offers postdoctoral fellowships to researchers wishing to join the
thriving, cutting-edge bioinformatics research conducted at TAU. TAU's
bioinformatics community spans over 100 researchers in nearly forty
research groups across four faculties.

Who can apply?

1. Researchers in the area of bioinformatics. Researchers with a PhD from TAU are not eligible.

2. The applicant must be a researcher who has completed a PhD from a
recognized institution of higher learning (in Israel or abroad), or who
has completed the requirements towards PhD degree and his PhD thesis is
under review.

3. Applicants must start their postdoctoral fellowship at TAU within
five years from the approval of their doctorate degree.

General requirements

1. The application must be supported by a researcher who is a member
of the Center, who agrees to be the candidate's advisor. (For a list of

2. The research project will be carried out entirely at TAU.

What does the fellowship include?
1. Fellows will receive a fellowship of 137,000 NIS per year.

subject to a satisfactory progress report and the advisor's support.

4. Fellows will receive USD 1,000 from the Center for travel to
international conferences to present their research.

*Aims and scope*

The focus of the special issue is on emerging topics at the interface of
computational intelligence, Bioinformatics and Bioengineering.

This is a rich area that includes important and diverse problems, such as
protein structure prediction, systems and synthetic biology, visualization
of large-scale biological data sets, epigenomics, as well as touches on a
vast range of topics in biomedical engineering, bioprocessing and
healthcare informatics, such as biomedical imaging/data modelling and
mining, biomarker discovery, development of personalized medicine and
treatment, mining of big healthcare dataset, biopharmaceutical manufacture
and computer-assisted closed-loop problems.

The computational intelligence community in bioinformatics and
bioengineering is fragmented and large. The aim of the special issue we are
proposing will be to capture some of the ongoing interdisciplinary research
that draws upon joint expertise in the domains of optimization and learning
via computational intelligence techniques and bioinformatics and
bioengineering. The focus will be to provide both breadth in the diversity
of selected problems and depth in state-of-the-art techniques for selected
problems.

*Submission Process*

The IEEE CIM requires all prospective authors to submit their manuscripts
in electronic format, as a PDF file. The maximum length for Papers is
typically 20 double-spaced typed pages with 12 point font, including
figures and references. Submitted manuscript must be typewritten in English
in single column format. Authors of Papers should specify on the first page
of their submitted manuscript up to 5 keywords. Additional information

[DMANET] Postdoc and PhD positions in Algorithms and Optimization at the London School of Economics

Applications are invited for postdoctoral research fellowships and for PhD scholarships in the Mathematics Department of the London School of Economics and Political Science. The positions are funded by the European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant "Scaling Methods for Discrete and Continuous Optimization" held by László Végh.

The project focuses on problems and methods on the interface between discrete and continuous optimization. A key goal is to further our understanding of strongly polynomial computability, including making progress towards finding a strongly polynomial algorithm for linear programming.
