[DMANET] Special issue of EJCO on Bilevel Optimisation - Deadline extended to October 31, 2018

Special issue of the EURO Journal on Computational Optimization on Bilevel Optimization

Bilevel Programming is a fairly recent branch of optimization that deals with programs whose constraints embed an auxiliary optimization problem. Bilevel programs are pervasive and are commonly found in a number of real-world problems. This includes problems in the domains of transportation, energy, economics, decision science, environmental economics, etc. Efficient exact or approximate solution algorithms for such problems must exploit the structure of the problems at hand.

The aim of the special issue is to invite high-quality manuscripts addressing bilevel optimization problems and presenting convincing numerical results.

Possible topics include, but are not restricted to:

• Linear, convex, nonlinear, mixed integer bilevel optimization

• Equilibrium problems

• Stackelberg games

• Energy applications

• Transportation and location applications

• Pricing problems

• Interdiction and fortification problems.

Following the journal high standards, we expect high quality contributions that will undergo the strict reviewing process of EJCO.

[DMANET] Call for Papers of a Special Issue 'Graph-Theoretic Problems and Their New Applications' in Mathematics

The journal

Mathematics (ISSN 2227-7390, http://www.mdpi.com/journal/mathematics)

is currently running a Special Issue entitled "Graph-Theoretic
Problems and Their New Applications". Mathematics is an international
peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI which is
listed e.g. in Scimago (since 2017), Scopus and Web of Science and
tracked for an impact factor 2019.

As the Guest Editor of this issue, I would like to invite you to
submit your latest research in all areas of graph-theoretic problems
and their applications.

The submission deadline is 31 January 2020. You may send your

Sterling (GBP).

Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English.

[DMANET] PhD position University of Twente

The Operations Research group of the Department of Applied Mathematics at the University of Twente has a vacancy for a full-time PhD position in the AGILE project. This project has as goal to design self-organising market mechanisms and corresponding distributed software to enable a smart and sustainable energy system.

The candidate of this vacancy will focus on mathematical aspects. In particular, the candidate will work in the general area of stochastic off-line planning and scheduling, on-line dispatching, self-configuration and self-optimisation and will contribute as one of two PhDs to AGILE project, which is a collaboration of University of Twente, Eindhoven University of Technology, and industry partners.
Besides a strong Operations Research and Mathematic background an affinity with engineering and applications would be appreciated. A strong background in power systems engineering is not essential – the other PhD student in the project will focus on those aspects.

[DMANET] Open Faculty Position in Operations Research at ESSEC

*ESSEC Business School is offering a position of Assistant Professor or
Associate Professor in Operations Research for its Paris-Cergy campus, to
start in September 2019*.

Applicants should have a strong research focus and interests in
Mathematical Programming and Discrete Optimization, with a PhD or doctorate
in related fields. They should also demonstrate high leadership and
autonomy in research and teaching, with publications in high-quality
journals in Operations Research. Salary is competitive with the European
Business Schools environment.

The Professor will join the Information Systems, Decision Sciences and
Statistics (IDS) department, and will be part of the OMOR (Operations
Management / Operations Research) research cluster of ESSEC Business School
that currently gathers 9 permanent members and 10 PhD students (see

[DMANET] Tenured/Tenured-Track Faculty Position(s), Cornell Tech, New York City, NY

A faculty position in Operations Research and Information Engineering (ORIE) is available at the Cornell Tech campus in New York City. The position is part of the Jacobs Technion-Cornell Institute, and we particularly encourage candidates whose work fits into Jacobs Institute application-domain emphases in the areas of urban technology, especially related to the intersection of digital and physical systems, and digital health technologies.

IRIF (Institute for Research in Foundations of Computer Science) is a joint laboratory of the CNRS (French National Center for Scientific Research) and Université Paris Diderot created in 2016 as the merger of the previous laboratories LIAFA and PPS. Research in IRIF spans areas such as the design and analysis of algorithms, complexity, combinatorics, quantum computing, networks and complex systems and distributed computation, theory and algorithms of graphs, automata theory and applications, systems modeling and verification, foundations of programming languages, interactive proof assistance systems, computational formalisms. The positions are financed either by the laboratory resources, group or personal grants, or by joint applications of IRIF members and the candidate to outside funding agencies. Starting in 2010, the European Association for Theoretical Computer Science (EATCS) confers each year at ICALP the Presburger Award to a young scientist (in exceptional cases to several young scientists) for outstanding contributions in theoretical computer science, documented by a published paper or a series of published papers. The award is named after Mojzesz Presburger who accomplished his path-breaking work on decidability of the theory of addition (which today is called Presburger arithmetic) as a student in 1929.

Nominations for the Presburger Award can be submitted by any member or group of members of the theoretical computer science community except the nominee and his/her advisors for the master thesis and the doctoral dissertation. Nominated scientists have to be at most 35 years at the time of the deadline of nomination (i.e., for the Presburger Award of 2019 the date of birth should be in 1983 or later). The Presburger Award Committee of 2019 consists of Thore Husfeldt (Lund University and IT University of Copenhagen), Anca Muscholl (LaBRI, Bordeaux) and Jukka Suomela (Aalto, chair).

[DMANET] Postdoctoral Associate - DIMACS at Rutgers University

DIMACS, the Center for Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science, invites applications for a postdoctoral position associated with the Center.


This position is in collaboration with the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) in Princeton, NJ. It is a two-year postdoctoral associateship with the first year (2019-2020) spent at DIMACS, and the second year (2020-2021) spent at IAS. There is a requirement to teach one course during the first year (typically in the fall semester).


Applicants should be recent Ph.D.s with interest in theoretical computer science and/or discrete mathematics. Research areas include but are not limited to: computational complexity, algorithms, optimization, cryptography, combinatorics, graph theory, and discrete probability. Special Issue Information

Maritime transportation is the major conduit of international trade. In
terms of cost, maritime transport is very competitive relative to land and
airborne transport, increasing only by a few percent the total product cost.
On the other hand, maritime transportation takes longer or may cause harbor
congestion, which further increases voyage times. Furthermore, there are
difficulties in integrating this transportation mode efficiently with other
transport or distribution options. On top of that, the safety and the
environmental impact of maritime transportation, in particular, in the case
of sea accidents, are always two challenging issues.

As recent advances on maritime transportation require the synergy of both
computer science and maritime science, the main focus in this special issue
will be upon the latest developments on IT methodologies for maritime
transportation. Computational intelligence, data mining and knowledge
discovery/representation, risk assessment methodologies as well as
combinatorial optimization are the IT fields that have gain importance in
maritime studies because of their potential in giving solutions for
effective sea transportation.

Workshop on Crowd Assisted Sensing, Pervasive Systems and Communications (
CASPer 2019), held in conjunction with the 17th IEEE International
Conference on Pervasive Computing and Communications (PerCom 2019). We
would appreciate if you could circulate this email to colleagues and

Call for Papers

With smart-phones in their pockets, more than 1 billion people now have
access to sensing, computation, and connectivity, making it possible to
harness the power of the crowd to collect and share data about their
surroundings and experiences on a massive scale. Crowdsensing/crowdsourcing
is a novel data collection paradigm that leverages this vast mobile sensor
network, making it possible to expand the scope of research endeavors and
address civic issues without requiring the purchase of specialized sensors
or the installation and maintenance of network infrastructure. Data
collected using such applications may come from unexpected yet interesting
and valuable sources and may allow for collecting data in previously
inaccessible locations and contexts.

This new data collection paradigm introduces several research challenges.
Privacy is a primary concern for users who contribute sensitive or
personally identifiable information (PII). Incentive mechanisms for
participation may be needed to encourage people to volunteer their
resources to collect data. Methods are needed for processing large-scale,
user-generated data sets into meaningful information, and for assessing and
understanding the quality of information to help guide decision-making.
Approaches, which involve the crowd in such data analysis tasks, with
humans serving as a source of semantic information, interpretation, and
evaluation of crowdsensing/crowdsourcing data, can also help to build an
understanding of the physical, computational, and socio-technical
environment.

At the same time, with the deployment of a tremendous number of sensing
devices collecting a huge amount of data for smart cities, smart home,
connected cars, e-halth or Industries, the Internet of Things is also
facing similar challenges regarding data privacy, scalability, data
processing or visualization. Thus, there is need to provide relevant data
science tools for citizens in order to extract all the properties of the
data and provide novel integrated services with data from the crowd or
sensors.

The objective of this workshop is to provide a forum for discussion,
debate, and collaboration focused on ideas, trends, techniques, and recent
advances in crowdsensing and crowdsourcing, as well as Internet of Things
and sensed devices. Similarly to our past editions, CASPer 2019 will also
feature an invited speech and a panel discussion devoted to the latest key
developments in the crowdsensing and crowdsourcing domain.

We invite original research contributions that advance the state-of-the-art
as well as position papers, which pose a new direction or present a
controversial point of view. Topics of interest include, but are not
limited to:

- Algorithms to handle, process, and visualize large-scale
crowdsensing/crowdsourcing data sets, e.g. big data analytics in
crowdsensing/crowdsourcing
- Data integrity, security, privacy, and provenance for
crowdsensing/crowdsourcing data

[DMANET] Research position on time-dependent optimization problems in logistics at Institute of Transport Logistics, TU Dortmund University

An der Technischen Universität Dortmund ist in der Fakultät Maschinenbau, am Institut für Transportlogistik zum nächstmöglichen Zeitpunkt die Stelle

einer / eines wissenschaftlich Beschäftigten

zunächst befristet für die Dauer von 3 Jahren mit der Option auf Verlängerung zu besetzen. Die Vertragslaufzeit wird dem Qualifizierungsziel angemessen gestaltet. In einem interdisziplinären Team forschen und lehren die Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeiter des ITL im Bereich der Verkehrs- und Transportlogistik. Dabei stehen die Optimierung von Verkehrsflüssen oder die Verbesserung der Ressourcenplanung und -nutzung in logistischen Anlagen im Mittelpunkt der Aktivitäten.

Anforderungsprofil

* Überdurchschnittlich abgeschlossenes wissenschaftliches Hochschulstudium (Diplom/Master) in der Fachrichtung (Wirtschafts-) Mathematik, Informatik, Verkehrsingenieurwesen o. ä.,
* Fundierte Kenntnisse in mathematischer, insbesondere diskreter, Optimierung und Algorithmenentwicklung,
* Interesse an logistischen Fragestellen zur Touren- und Umschlagsplanung sowie im Bereich des öffentlichen Verkehrs (ÖV),
* Programmierkenntnisse (z. B. C++ oder Java) sind wünschenswert,
* Erfahrungen im Umgang mit einer Modellierungssprache (GAMS, Aimms, etc.) sind von Interesse,
* Sicherer Umgang mit den gängigen Office-Anwendungen,
* Gute Englischkenntnisse,
* Interesse an einer selbstständigen Bearbeitung von wissenschaftlich anspruchsvollen Fragestellungen,
* Fähigkeit zur Zusammenarbeit in einem interdisziplinären Team, soziale Kompetenz und ein hohes Maß an Engagement und Kooperationsbereitschaft.

Aufgabenbereich

In der Logistik müssen bei vielen Planungsproblemen zeitabhängige Komponenten (wie z.B. Zustellfenster und Taktfahrpläne) berücksichtigt werden. Dadurch erhöht sich allerdings die algorithmische Komplexität der Optimierungsverfahren erheblich. Vor diesem Hintergrund soll die Lösbarkeit von zeitabhängigen logistischen Optimierungsproblemen mit Hilfe zeitreduzierter Relaxierungen verbessert werden. Anwendungsbeispiele stellen hierbei Umlauf- und Dienstplanung im öffentlichen Verkehr dar.
Die Untersuchung dieser Fragestellung wird von der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) gefördert.

[DMANET] PhD position at Linköping University

The Department of Computer and Information Science (IDA) at Linköping
University, Sweden, invites applications for up to two (2) positions
as PhD student in Computer Science. These are positions within the
AI-Math Graduate School of the Wallenberg Artificial Intelligence,
Autonomous Systems and Software Program WASP (http://wasp-sweden.org/).

The PhD positions are within a project that focuses on methods for
analysing the computational complexity of constraint satisfaction problems
(CSP). CSPs are an important class of computational problems with a wide
range of applications within computer science, artificial intelligence,
and mathematics. The computational complexity of CSPs has been intensively
studied during the last decades, and several breakthrough results have
recently been obtained. These results are to a large extent based on
utilising methods from universal algebra and mathematical logic. The
project aims at developing new mathematical methods for analysing the
computational complexity of CSP problems over infinite domains---such
problems have very interesting applications within AI. A slightly more

[DMANET] Research grant: New Optimization Models for Transportation

Research grant in "Optimization Models for Transportation with
Crowdsourcing"

INESC TEC is accepting applications to award one Postdoctoral Grant in
project "LASTMILE - Rethinking last-mile delivery through
crowdsourcing".

Project overview:
This project deals with inviting in-store customers for delivering
parcels, ordered by on-line customers, on their way home. The
remaining parcels must be delivered by the company's fleet of
professional drivers, whose route is optimized as a vehicle routing
problem. This allows reducing environmental impacts and urban
congestion. The project concerns the development of models and tools
for solving this problem, which turns out to be a very challenging
stochastic combinatorial optimization problem.
