[DMANET] PhD Studentship Available

PhD Studentship, Trinity College Dublin

(4 years, annual stipend €25,000, start date Sept 2023 or Mar 2024)
This studentship would suit someone with strong analytical skills, with a background in Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, Computational Neuroscience or related quantitative discipline. This project will use dimension reduction techniques and nonlinear dynamic measures to examine high density electromyographic signals with the aim of assessing whether features of these signals can be used to sensitively detect subtle signs of motor unit degeneration in people with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as motor neurone disease.

[DMANET] Conference Announcement: Wet and Discrete 2

Wet and Discrete 2 (W&D) is to be held in Cairns, Queensland, 17–20 January, and Darwin, Northern Territory,
22–31 January 2024.

This is a small conference centred upon a set of workshops to bring together mathematicians interested in
open problems relating to Combinatorics and especially Extremal Set Theory. Amongst other areas this could
encompass Finite sets, Sperner Theory, Combinatorial Design, Graphs or Hypergraphs, Lattices, Algebraic
Combinatorics, Discrete Optimisation, and more. An aim is to bring together the expertise of mathematicians
who may work in related fields where knowledge sharing would potentially enhance research.
Previous such collaborative style meetings were in Darwin (W&D January 1998) and Central Australia (Dry &
Discrete, July 2006).

[DMANET] ADYN Summer School on Algorithm Engineering for Network Problems in Potsdam, Germany - 2nd call with extended registration deadline

The ADYN summer school on Algorithm Engineering for Network Problems
will be held in Potsdam, Germany, from 19th to 22nd September 2023. It
consists of lectures on different approaches to modern algorithm
engineering research. The target audience are senior undergraduate
students, PhD students and PostDocs with an interest in algorithms,
algorithm research and/or network problems.

The Professorship for Geometry/Optimization should fully represent the
fields of geometry and optimization in teaching and research and

[DMANET] Chow lectures -- deadline approaching

Dear all,

the registration deadline (July 31) for this this year's Chow Lectures is approaching. Due to space restrictions, we will have to handle registration rather strictly.

The Chow Lectures will take place at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Sciences in Leipzig on October 16-18. The speaker will be June Huh (Princeton University).

June Huh is mainly known for solving long-standing conjectures in combinatorics and discrete geometry using and extending ideas from algebraic geometry. His many distinctions include a Clay Research Fellowship, the New Horizons in Mathematics Prize, and the Fields Medal in 2022.

At the Chow lectures he will give an overview of recent developments in the theory of Lorentzian polynomials, starting from his initial work with Petter Brändén and covering some more recent works of Aluffi, Brändén-Leake, Chan-Pak, Hu-Xiao, Ross, Ross-Süß-Wannerer, and others.

The lectures will be accompanied by a historical talk by Norbert Schappacher as well as talks and exercise sessions lead by Chris Eur, Sofía Garzón, Alheydis Geiger, Shiyue Li and Jacob Matherne.

The idea behind the Chow lectures is to give early-career mathematicians the opportunity to enjoy lectures by internationally renowned experts on active fields of modern mathematics and to create a stimulating research environment.

Limited travel funding can be provided for early-career participants such as postdoctoral researchers and PhD students. Applicants for funding are expected to submit a brief academic CV and a motivation letter or an article on a related topic for evaluation as well as to make a contribution at the event (such as presenting a poster).

Next generation cloud systems will require a paradigm shift in how they are
constructed and managed. Conventional control and management platforms are
facing considerable challenges regarding flexibility, dependability and
security that next generation systems will require. The cloud computing
paradigm has gone part of the way towards alleviating some of the problems
associated with resource allocation, utilization and management (e.g., via
elasticity). However, many of the elements of a well-designed cloud
environment remain "stiff" and hard to modify and adapt in an integrated
fashion. This includes underlying networking topologies, many aspects of
the user control over IaaS, PaaS or SaaS layers when such is needed,
construction of XaaS services, provenance and meta-data collection, and so
on. In many situations the problem may be because service abstraction is
inadequate. Software Defined Systems (SDS) are systems that have added
software components which help abstract actual IT equipment and other
layers. One classical example, of course, are hypervisors. Such separation
provides a great opportunity for system administrators to more easily
construct and managing their systems through flexible software layers.
Software Defined Systems include Software Defined Networking (SDN),
Software Defined Storage, Software Defined Servers (Virtualization),
Software Defined Datacenters (SDD), Software Defined Security (SDSec), and
ultimately Software Defined Clouds (SDCloud) to name a few possibilities.
Individual solutions and seamless integration of these abstractions remains
in many respects a challenge. SDS aims to investigate the opportunities and
in all aspects of Software Defined Systems. In addition, it seeks for novel
contributions that help mitigating SDS challenges. That is, the objective
of SDS is to provide a forum for scientists, engineers, and researchers to
discuss and exchange new ideas, novel results and experience on all aspects
of Software Defined Systems. SDS is Technically Co-Sponsored by IEEE.

*Submission Guidelines: *

Papers selected for presentation will appear in the SDS Proceedings and
will be submitted to IEEE for inclusion. Papers can be up to 8 pages in
IEEE format, 10pt font using the IEEE 8.5" x 11" two-column format, single
space, A4 format. All papers should be in PDF format, and submitted
electronically at Paper Submission Link. A full paper must not exceed the
stated length (including all figures, tables and references). The
proceedings will be submitted for indexing to EI (Compendex), Scopus and
other indexing services like DBLP.

Submitted papers must present original unpublished research that is not
currently under review for any other conference or journal. Papers not
following these guidelines may be rejected without review. Also,
submissions received after the due date, exceeding length limit, or not
appropriately structured may also not be considered. Authors may contact
the Program Chair for further information or clarification.

After the success of the 12th World Congress on Information and
Communication Technologies (WICT 2022), we are organizing WICT 2023
to provide an opportunity for the researchers from academia and
industry to meet and discuss the latest solutions, scientific results
and methods in the usage and applications of ICT in the real world.
The conference programme will include workshops, special sessions and
tutorials, along with prominent keynote speakers and regular paper

ALGORITHMS, APPROXIMATION, AND LEARNING IN MARKET AND MECHANISM DESIGN

In recent years, economists and computer scientists have collaborated
with mathematicians, operations research experts, and practitioners to
improve the design and operations of real-world marketplaces. Such work
relies on robust feedback between theory and practice, inspiring new
mathematics closely linked - and directly applicable - to market and
mechanism design [3] questions.

This workshop is aimed at exploring core subjects in the field of market
and mechanism design, such as the design of non-convex auction markets,
the design of matching markets with preferences, algorithmic mechanism
design, and learning in games. These topics are interrelated and deeply
rooted in mathematics and computer science. Each day of the 4-day
workshop is devoted to one of these topics with talks by leading
scholars in the field and panel discussions on major open problems.

[DMANET] Postdoc position in Optimization/Constrained Clustering/Mathematical Imaging at University of Liverpool, UK

Applications are invited for a 24-month EPSRC funded Postdoctoral Research Associate post at the Department of Mathematics, University of Liverpool, UK.

The position is funded by Dr Alpers' EPSRC New Investigator Award project "Optimal Grain Diagrams: Mathematical Analysis and Algorithms". The Postdoctoral Research Associate will contribute to a programme of work that aims at enabling new materials discovery by advancing the theory and computation of geometric diagram structures describing polycrystals by exploiting a recently established link to constrained clustering.
The applicant should have (or be about to obtain) a PhD in Mathematics, Mathematical Optimisation, Operations Research, Machine Learning, Computer Science, or any related area, the ability to pursue research independently and as part of a team, and a track record of high-quality original research. Computational skills and expertise in clustering and/or optimisation as well as interest in materials science applications would be advantageous.
