Information for the PhD position: The area of Economics and Computation studies problems of an economic nature from the perspective of computer science. This includes areas such as Algorithmic Game Theory and Mechanism Design, Social Choice Theory, and Fair Division. These problems are characterised by a set of agents that have preferences over a set of possible outcomes, and the goal is to design good algorithms for aggregating those preferences, or for studying the outcomes of the strategic interactions between those agents. Potential themes for the PhD project are the fair division of divisible and indivisible resources, the distortion in social choice theory, or the computational complexity of problems related to equilibrium computation in games or markets. Ideal candidates for the PhD studentships will have an interest and an existing background in theoretical computer science and algorithm design and analysis. Experience with algorithmic game theory or social choice theory is desirable, but not required.
