[DMANET] CS Internships at Los Alamos National Laboratory

CS Internships at Los Alamos National Laboratory

=====================================

The Socio-technical Modeling and Simulation team in the Information Sciences
Group (CCS-3) at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) has projects in
modeling and simulation spanning the full range of research activities from
problem analysis, algorithmic and system design, to implementation, testing
and applications of our tools. Our work covers a diverse and ever-expanding
spectrum of application domains with a focus on infrastructure modeling; our
current portfolio includes communication networks, transportation networks,
commodity networks, epidemic modeling, agent-based activity modeling, and
social networks. Our simulations model large-scale socio-technological
systems with high fidelity. To tackle the scalability challenge, we
implement our systems on high-performance distributed computing clusters.
Most of our students have been able to publish their work done here in
peer-reviewed journals and conferences.

We have several openings for graduate students to work with us for a limited
period of time (typically between three and 24 months). Applicants should
have demonstrated domain knowledge in one or more of the following areas:

- Combinatorial algorithm design

- Computational geometry

- Social network analysis

- Sensor networks

- Communication networks

We also expect applicants to have the following skills:

- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English

- Strong programming skills and interest in C/C++, including template
programming and STLs

- Knowledge of one or more scripting languages (Perl, Python, shell)

- Experience with distributed programming and MPI will be a plus.

US citizenship is NOT a requirement.

Starting dates for these student positions are negotiable; the appointments
related to the above positions are expected to start between April and
August, 2010. Please send your CV (PDF preferred) to djidjev@lanl.gov.
Please also put "Los Alamos CCS-3 Internship" in your subject line. CVs
received no later than March 31, 2010, will receive full considerations.

Los Alamos National Laboratory provides an excellent academic working
environment with access to state-of-the-art technologies and also an
impressive pool of researchers with diverse backgrounds for collaborative
efforts. Annualized student and postdoc salaries fall in the range from USD
44K to USD 70K depending on education status.

Los Alamos is a small, picturesque town located at an altitude of 7000 feet
in northern New Mexico, and offers ample opportunities for outdoor
recreation, public concerts, and artistic activities. In addition, the
nearby city of Santa Fe is home to a great variety of cultural events
throughout the year.
