Computer Science at Royal Holloway carries out outstanding work in
algorithms and complexity, bioinformatics, distributed and global
computing, machine learning, software language engineering and type
theory. We wish to appoint a candidate with a proven research record in
any area of computer science, but would prefer to build on our existing
strengths.

The Department offers a vibrant research culture and a very dynamic
teaching environment. We have an ambitious plan of expansion that will
establish us as a leading computer science department in the UK over the
next few years. In RAE 2008, we were placed in the upper third of
computing departments (with 99% of our research outputs being of
international excellence and 28% world leading), and we aim to do better
in REF 2014. Our research is strongly supported by external funding (in
excess of £4 million in the past decade).

The College itself was ranked 119th in the Times HE World Rankings 2012,
which equates to 15th place in the UK. We are situated in a beautiful
campus in Egham, Surrey, ranked alongside Oxford and Harvard as one of the
16 most picturesque universities in the world. We are both close to
Central London and 10 minutes by taxi from Heathrow Airport, and situated
in the "M4 corridor", home to a large number of leading-edge technology
companies.

The successful candidate will have a proven or promising research record
in computer science, with a background in the theoretical foundations of
the subject, and will be able to contribute to undergraduate and
postgraduate teaching and supervision of mainstream projects in a broad
range of topics. The appointee will also be expected to make a
contribution across the full range of departmental activities. In
particular, duties and responsibilities of this post include: conducting
individual or collaborative research projects; producing high-quality
outputs for publication in high-profile journals or conference
proceedings; delivering high-quality teaching to all levels of students;
supervising research postgraduate students. Ability to attract funding,
engage with industry, or contribute to our outreach activities will also
be rated very highly.
