Overview

14 years have passed since the twenty-fifth EURO Winter Institute on Location and Logistics held in Estoril, Portugal, in January and February 2007. It was the last one devoted to locational analysis and five laureates of previous Summer/Winter Institutes felt it was high time to organise another one devoted to location science, taking place in Edinburgh, Scotland, from 11 June to 24 June 2022.

EURO Summer/Winter Institutes are an instrument EURO has established for the encouragement of good scientific and social relationships between promising early stage OR scientists. The main purpose of the institutes is to establish in each field of OR a network of outstanding people who will continue to work together in the future. Participation at an ESI is an honor.

The scientific sessions will be hosted at the International Centre for Mathematical Sciences (ICMS) in the Bayes Centre, a modern building in the city centre. Accommodation will be provided at Pollock Halls, an accommodation on campus, and laureates will share a double room with another laureate. Both venues belong to The University of Edinburgh and are 15-20 minutes walking from each other, a very nice walk in a very safe neighbourhood.


Scientific Programme

To be eligible, a candidate must be the main contributor of a single-authored or co-authored paper related to the field of Location Science, which has not yet been published or accepted for publication. Topics of interest are, for example:

* Network location
* Continuous location
* Location-routing
* Hub location
* Geographical information systems and location
* Supply chain design
* Discrete location
* Location under uncertainty
* Location in healthcare

Each laureate will give a presentation of 45 minutes about their paper, plus questions.
Moreover, there will be presentations from international experts. Please be aware that this list might be subject to changes.

In addition to those presentations, we intend to hold three workshops, each coordinated by two or three of the invited speakers. During these workshops, the laureates, split into groups, will have the chance of working together on a given topic. After two days, each group will present its findings to all laureates.
These workshops give the laureates the opportunity to delve deeper into some of the topics addressed in the talks of the experts. Furthermore, we hope to encourage laureates to work together on some problems and, hopefully, lay the grounds for future collaborations among them.
The first workshop will start in the middle of the first week, with the presentations on Friday. The other two workshops will be scheduled for the second week. This schedule is not only to give enough time for the laureates to get to know each other, but also to ensure that by the time of the workshops, the laureates have already attended the relevant lectures for the corresponding topics.

Finally, we are very pleased to say that there will be a special issue of Computers & Operations Research covering the topics of the ESI and that selected papers of the Institute will be eligible for submission.


Social Programme

Several social activities are planned to encourage laureates to socialise. The (tentative) list of activities includes

* A ceilidh (a traditional Scottish dance)
* A guided city tour of Edinburgh, including a hike to Arthur's Seat
* A Whisky tasting at the Scotch Malt Whisky Society
* An excursion to North Berwick, a scenic seaside village 25 miles east of Edinburgh, including a boat trip to the famous Bass Rock with its stunning population of gannets and puffins, and a walk along the coast to Tantallon Castle, a ruined mid-14th-century fortress


Applying to the ESI

If accepted, the ESI will cover the full cost for accommodation and board of each laureate for the duration of the institute.

Who can apply?

To apply to the ESI, you

* Have to be a current PhD student or researcher with less than two years research experience since completing your PhD.
* Have to come from a EURO member society country, or study in a EURO member society country. Additionally, up to two candidates can be appointed by IFORS, according to the EURO and IFORS exchange for ESWIs.
* Must not have been a laureate of a previous EURO Summer/Winter Institute.

What to submit?

* A Curriculum Vitae, including information about your education, research projects, publications, awards, and other pertinent experiences (pdf format).
* A single-authored or co-authored paper in the field of "Location Science" where you are the main contributor and which has not yet been published or accepted for publication (pdf format).
* A statement outlining your motivation for participating in the ESI (at most one page).
* A letter of recommendation from one referee (preferably the thesis advisor or head of department).

What next?

The admission process for candidates will focus on the quality of their submitted paper, their scientific background as well as their interest in the field of Location Science. Applicants might be asked to clarify their statement before the final decision.

The Scientific Committee selects and ranks the candidates and the Organising Committee will liaise with the national OR societies to secure funding to cover travel expenses (which are not included in the ESI grant).

The Scientific Committee will notify applicants about the final decision by email by 21 February 2022.

The selected applicants will be announced in the official program and published on the web page.

The selected IFORS�\EURO scholar(s) will receive joint sponsorship from IFORS and EURO. IFORS will sponsor the travel costs of the delegate coming from a non�\EURO member society. EURO will shoulder expenses related to the registration, accommodation, meals, and social activities to the IFORS fellow. Applicants from developing countries will be given preferential treatment for the slot.
