Clermont Auvergne (UCA), Clermont-Ferrand, France.
A PhD position in Operations Research is available in the LIMOS
laboratory (CNRS/UCA/EMSE), Clermont-Ferrand, France, under the
supervision of Prof. Sylvie Norre, Prof. Dominique Feillet, Prof. Alain
Quilliot and Dr. Res. Ing. Hélène Toussaint.
The candidate will develop solution algorithms for the management of
large-scale on-demand transportation systems with autonomous vehicles,
in an urban and peri-urban context. More details on the topic are given
below. This thesis is a part of a larger project and the candidate will
interact intensively with a PhD student who started her thesis in 2021.
The candidate must have or be about to obtain a Master's degree in
Computer Science or Applied Mathematics. The ideal candidate will have
excellent programming skills, as well as good communication and
collaboration skills. A strong interest in new forms of mobility and
sustainable development is an asset.
Please send your application with the following information to the
contacts listed below: a cover letter, your curriculum vitae, a copy of
your transcripts, reference letters if available
The position provides a net salary of 1800€ for three years.
For further information, please contact Professors Alain Quilliot,
Dominique Feillet or Sylvie Norre.

Context of the thesis
Environmental issues, combined with the increase of traffic in urban and
peri-urban areas tend to favor the emergence of a new generation of
transportation modes: bike sharing, carpooling, on-demand
transportation... At the same time, we are seeing the rapid development
of technologies related to the concept of intelligent/autonomous
vehicles, and the progressive shift from carbon-based vehicles toward
electric vehicles. This evolution questions the future of the individual
car and the new mobility services that could be developed.
Objectives of the thesis
The thesis will study emerging flexible public transport systems based
on a combination of on-demand transportation (ODT) and regular lines
(bus, metro…). These systems will be studied under three main
assumptions: (i) they would offer a flexible and large-scale alternative
to individual transport modes, (ii) they would rely, at least partially,
on autonomous vehicles, (iii) they would mainly involve electric vehicles.
The thesis will focus on the design and the operational management of
these systems. We will consider an ODT system, involving smart
electric vehicles of different capacities, connected to regular
public-transit services and whose goal is to respond to a large number
of requests (≥ 100,000) on a daily basis. At the tactical/strategic
level, we will consider fleet sizing and line planning: How to dimension
the ODT system? How to design regular lines and optimize their
frequency? How to connect the two modes, regular and flexible? At the
operational level, we will address the routing and the scheduling of ODT
vehicles, taking account of modal choices for users.
