[DMANET] PhD and PostDoc Opportunities – University of Brescia, Italy

We are seeking expressions of interest from prospective PhD students and postdoctoral researchers interested in fundamental problems at the intersection of information theory, theoretical computer science, and discrete mathematics at the University of Brescia, Italy, within an ERC Advanced Grant project led by Marco Dalai. The project investigates the mathematical foundations of highly reliable communication, exploring connections between classical and quantum Shannon theory, coding theory, combinatorics, graph theory, and algebra. Research topics include, but are not limited to: • Zero-error information theory, graph capacities, and graph entropy. • Source and channel coding, list decoding, and error exponents. • Extremal combinatorics, graph theory, and algebraic and polynomial methods. • Matrix and tensor rank methods, semidefinite programming, and connections with quantum information theory. Candidates with a strong background in mathematics, theoretical computer science, combinatorics, coding theory, or related areas are encouraged to express their interest. Previous experience in information theory is particularly welcome, but not essential for candidates with a solid mathematical background and a strong interest in fundamental theoretical research. Postdoctoral starting dates will be flexible, most likely from May 2027 onwards. PhD positions will be associated with doctoral programs in Information Engineering starting in April and November 2027. Interested candidates should contact Prof. Marco Dalai at marco.dalai@unibs.it, providing: • Postdoctoral candidates: a CV, a list of publications, and a brief description of research interests and experience. • Prospective PhD students: a CV, detailed B.Sc. and M.Sc. academic transcripts, and a one-page letter of motivation. Expressions of interest are welcome on a rolling basis. Formal calls for applications will be announced separately, and all appointments will be subject to the relevant institutional selection procedures.
